During the Second Sino-Japanese war, the Communist party under Mao tried to gain power in China. Mao, however, was assasinated by agents of Chiang Kai-shek. Kai-shek remained in power until 1975, when he died. His vice president, Yen Chia-jin took over until 1975. Then President Chiang Ching-kuo was elected and served until 1988. Next was Lee Teng-hui who ruled until 2000. Then Chen shui-bian who is still in power and is in the 3rd year of his third term.
Chinese presidents are elected for a four year term without a term limit. They rule absolutely for four years, there is not parliament or Congress. So far the government has been stable.
