Bang. He had to complete the task at hand. There was so much in the universe that he had observed, and the monarchy refused to take action to reach it. They were too afraid.
Bang. Ships had come within passing of nearby stars. Some had even come from those stars. Aszala had observed all of them, and knew that the future of the monarchy lay in first contact.
Bang. A lot of resources had to be expended in order to create the beacon. Even a moment's activation would be enough, or at least according to his calculations.
Bang. A moment was probably all he had. He had to smuggle some of the materials, and was performing an unsanctioned scientific experiment. The authorities had enough evidence against him by now to have him executed for potential mass manslaughter.
Crack. The door was giving way. He had fused the door shut with a burner, but after failing to get through electronically they had gotten their gargoyle droids to start battering the door.
Crunch. One last adjustment, and Aszala was set. He triggered the beacon, and it emitted a low hum. Electronics nearby wavered, and the gargoyle arm that had broken through the door momentarily started to melt before the nanites pulled themselves back together.
Slam. The gargoyle was through and charging him. Aszala raised his hands in surrender before feeling a sudden pressure and sharp pain in his chest. He looked down to see the gargoyle's elbow in his chest, tainted with blood. His blood.
"Aszala Varkal, you have been administered a field execution for endangering the populace of the constitutional monarchy of the noble House of the family Vuliev. Your post-mortem punishment shall be ten years of service in the Etheral..."
Darkness overcame Aszala, and he prayed his beacon had drawn the attention of the ships in the stars. The monarchy had become weak in the status quo, and needed a new frontier.
The Homer was on a routine patrol when the signals picked up a faint beacon, on a channel that was so old only pirates, and rebels used it. The crew of the Homer was looking for pirates and rebels when the signal reached it.
"Sir, we are getting channel 14-k band."
"Good. Jump to the source and announce our selves to these people."
"Yes, Sir."
The Homer jumped to the source of the signal.
"Well what do we have here? Scan the planet for life forms."
"Scanning,Sir".............."We've found many races and a technologically primitive society."
"Open a link on channel 14-k band."
"Done,sir."
We come in peace! We wish to advance your society with our techonlogy. Please respond.

The courts were abuzz with argument and indecision. Some believed in simply ignoring the transmissions and hoping the problem went away. Others felt that the reality of the situation should be presented to the aliens and explain an isolationist interest. A few, however, wanted to take advantage of the situation and expand skyward. One of those few was Sirislav Vuliev, of the royal house. He turned to his Ethereal Warden, a hovering task droid that projected a hologram of the deceased who's neural framework provided the AI base. In this case, it was the man who sent the transmission in the first place. "Aszala, put me through to the alien vessel."
One of the courtiers stood up reluctantly. "Sir, may I suggest that you at least consult the rest of your family before-"
"That will not be neccesary. Family doctrine concurs with my decision in roughly 92% of the possible interpretations. Although his methods were illegal, Aszala's motives were quite noble. This is exactly what the monachy needs. Now, Aszala, put me through."
Aszala tapped into the communications arrays and hailed the orbitting vessel. The communication would provide visuals as well as auditories, and Sirislav Vuliev was dressed in simple black and white leathers in regal fashion. Although most of the populace was human, the Vuliev line was blessed and cursed with various mutations, and the visible affliction on Sirislav was that he was an albino. "Alien vessel, welcome to the system of the monarchy. We would send a vessel up to greet you, but we felt that it would be more efficient to draw alien merchants to us so that we may acquire foreign vessels. At least, that's how I understand the beacon's intention."

INS Solaron
Scouting Mission
Day 34
Thirty-four days had passed since the Solaron and her escorts left port over New Cravan on their scouting and patrol assignment. All had been peaceful, and little had happened over the past few weeks.
But something changed today. A signal, fairly weak from the Solaron's position, sang out like a dove from the vast reaches of space. Another contact made.
"Sir, we have pinpointed the origin of the signal. Your orders?"
"Contact Command. I wasn't told I would be meeting a civilization.", Commander Kyle Darrels answered with a chuckle. Within seconds, a tall figure in a navy blue uniform stood before him, projected with a blue hue.
"Good morning, Admiral."
"Good morning, Commander. What is the situation?"
"We've recieved a transmission from a point here in space.", he said as the position of the signal was displayed. "I request orders on approaching this situation."
"How large is your group?"
"Well, I have my Radiance-class Solaron as flag, two Dilligence-class light cruisers, two Indomitable-class destroyers, and one Javelin-class missile destroyer. More than enough firepower if you ask me, sir."
"Indeed, you've got quite a bit of power there. I'm ordering another group to move outside the system if you need reinforcement. In the meantime, you should be able to handle anything that could go wrong. Do you have anyone capable of carrying out diplomatic talks?"
"Well, the contingent of Knights."
"They'll have to do."
"Aye, sir. Thank you."
The hologram phased out.
"Set a course for the signal source. We're going to check it out."
"Aye, sir, drives activated."
"Jump to lightspeed when ready."
"Commencing jump."
With a flash, the Solaron group was gone....
.... And with an equally bright flash, it arrived at the source of the signal.
"Energy readings coming from what appears to be an inhabitable planet. More than likely where we're getting these signals from."
"Enter orbit, and open a comm with the locals."
"Aye, sir."
Attention local government: This is the INS-45CC Solaron of the Cravanian Imperial Navy. We detected a transmission originating from your world. Please respond.

Sirislav saw a screen come up by the hologram of the Homer's commander, the visual projection for the communication. Another vessel had arrived and was hailing them. "We'd purchase as we could afford, although one could argue a one-sided deal would be stealing. In any case, you can land at the coordinates specified to begin negociations with one of my Courtiers. We're being hailed by another alien faction, and observation suggests I shouldn't keep them waiting long."
He switched to a communication with the Solaron, and the Ethereal's hologram changed to one of its Commander. Same greeting as before, but recognizing their nationality and adjusting the wording so as to avoid sounding like a thief. "Cravanian vessel, welcome to the system of the monarchy. We would send a vessel up to greet you, but we felt that it would be more efficient to draw alien merchants to us so that we may purchase foreign vessels. At least, that's how I understand the beacon's intention."
((OOC: Nuclear holocaust of a newb? Well, I dunno what to tell you. Threaten them in as official a tone as you can get, I guess. Try to make it sound official, and tell them you'll use force. And if you actually carry it out... Dunno what to tell you.))

"We will deploy a shuttle to the surface immediately."
Miniutes later, a shuttle exited the hangar bay, and made its descent into the atmosphere. As it entered the atmosphere, it sent a transmission.
"Ground control, this is Imperial Shuttle 22-85 requesting permission to land, and coordinates to your nearest landing zone. Please respond."
House Vuliev
09-06-2006, 05:42
Sirislav blinked in surprise as the transmission ended. He then turned toward the court with a rather cynical expression. "I, for one, think my dear aunt Maruel should deal with that one. Give them the coordinates for her manor's hanger, and give her a briefing."
The manor was one of many across the planet's singular continent, self sufficient off the surrounding farmlands. Maruel Vuliev's manor-city was near the capitol, where government facilities, the urban populace, and the Vuliev palace were all located. Aside from the capitol and the manor-cities, the entire population was rural.
By the time the shuttle arrived at the landing pad outside Maruel's manor, she was already out and waiting for them with a pair of gargoyles as guard. Maruel herself was heavily aged, her mobility bound to a hovering throne of gothic design. The throne had a control panel across it, which allowed for both mobility and access to all the royal family's secrets.
The ramp lowered, and off stepped four robed men. Three took up positions around the shuttle, while the fourth, and aging man, walked forward.
"Greetings. I am Master Jacob Tarson. It is a pleasure to meet with you."
He appeared unarmed, but noone would ever be able to tell with the heavy brown cloak he wore. His companions watched the area warily, holding their positions around the shuttle. Meanwhile, a lound clanking noise could be heard from inside the shuttle, in a pattern like that of footsteps...

"Ace of clubs."
The first officer of the Verweilende Ruhe layed down his cards.
"You've got Straub helping, haven't you?"
"Our esteemed navigator is still on the bridge and we are still in the warp. I'm just damn good at this game."
The two officers sat at a small table, Kapitan Elke Steuben on a wall sofa and her first officer, Kommandant Lukas Jalfainer lounging in a leather chair. The room was full of such tables, and quite dark. There was a bar on one wall, equipped with all the naval favourites: Feuerwasser, Henker, and Joachim's. The opposite wall bore a hatch marked "Bezirkraum", and there was a piano in one corner.
"Well, what else is there to play?"
"Go fish?"
Elke chuckled.
"Well, if you're afraid of a real game," said Lukas with mock reproach, suppressing a chuckle of his own, "How about a little go at Diplomacy?"
The buzzer buzzed, as buzzers tended to do.
"Come in."
The door opened, admitting a panting Maat.
"Ma'am! Sir! Mr.Haldwische wants you on the bridge. He says he's getting a transmission from a presumed unhab."
The two officers wordlessly rose and left the room, heading for the lift-train to the bridge.
On the command deck, they were met by a somewhat menacing figure in a black leather greatcoat, his eyes concealed by the shadow of his forward-leaning saddle cap, with a holster at his belt despite the fact that the ship was at cruise stations.
"Morning, Kommissar."
"Morning. I assume you know the doctrine in this situation?"
"Of course."
They entered the bridge.
"Okay, Max, run me this transmission."
"There's no words, ma'am. It's just a beacon, but it's new."
"Right then. Sublight stations, set course for this beacons origin."
A few hours later, the light-cruiser armed spyship emerged from the warp in the Vuliev system.

Maruel smiled politely and nodded hello as she began typing on her control panel. As she did, words began to form which were quickly translated to the dialect spoken by Master Tarson. "Greetings, Master Tarson. I am Maruel Vuliev, grandniece of the elder monarch. My nephew Sirislav informed me of your arrival. I understand your people wish to negociate the sale of spacefaring vessels."
Meanwhile, Sirislav turned his attention toward the newly arrived (uncloaked) vessel. "Aszala, hail them. Courtier Trigori, get a communcation center set up so I don't have to keep taking these damn calls."
"Yes, my liege."

"Sir, there seem to be several ships near the signal's origin"
"hmm. Are they in combat mode?"
"no sir, they all seem peaceful. signatures are widely varied."
"hmm. probably a variety of different nationalities... secure from silent running and take us in, do not arm weapons or shields"

OOC: this is actually first contact with me for everyone here... not that my ship will react differently
"Well, we'd like to negotiate just general trade, including spacefaring vessels.", he said returning the smile.

"Multiple ships incoming."
"IFF tags?"
"None marked as hostile... But- Oh shit."
"What?"
"I just picked up a Sephrioth ship decloaking."
"Shit... Sound General Quarters. Keep the weapons on standby. Hols the alert fighters until my order."
"Aye, sir."
The halls were bathed in pulsing red light while klaxons blared. The ship internal com sprang to life.

Maximilian Haldwische banged rapidly at his keyboard.
"Peacable hail recieved, ma'am."
The Kapitan wordlessly flipped a switch on the command chair, activating the audio-visual comms, and her experianced comm officer new exactly what to do.
"Greetings, locals. I am Kapitan Elke Steuben, commanding officer of the Verweilende Ruhe, and I would be interested in diplomatic meetings. But right now, my first officer desperately needs to say something."
"Two new contacts appeared, but more importantly, someone here earlier just went battle stations!"
Elke slammed the action stations button on her chair, and across the ship, sailors jumped up, utility uniforms were hastily donned and work parties assembled.
"Sir! A Star Destroyer just uncloaked!"
"Damn! We've haven't had the best relations with Nova but open a channel."
We wish to aid you incase we or yuo come under fire from that SD. Our nations haven't had very friendly ties in the past but neither of our forces defend our selves from that let alone can destroy it.

Sirislav smiled upon overhearing the first officer on the transmission. His family had anticipated the possibility of hostiles reacting to the beacon, and the defenses of the capitol had been adjusted so that they could strike orbital targets. "Tell me, Kapitan, how well do you think that a half-dozen particle beam weapon arrays would address the apparent threat to the planet of my family? Or would you prefer the diplomatic relations not open up with the striking down of a common enemy?"
Maruel nodded at Tarson and typed up a few quick commands on her console. A screen flipped up, revealing a display of a gargoyle like the ones flanking her. The screen quickly zoomed in to a microlevel on the gargoyle's arm, revealing the structure of a nanite. "Nanotechnology has become a specialty of our nation, along with inertial buffers for hoverdevices like my throne, particle beam technology, and neural grafting."
At the primary communications center, all of the nonhostile vessels were hailed with relatively similiar messages welcoming the crafts to the system, offering trade, and explaining the beacon. In the case of the Star Destroyer, however, it went more like this: "Your opening hostility creates a poor first impression. Would you be so kind as to identify yourselves and, more importantly, explain why you came in with your guns ready?"
Nova Boozia
09-06-2006, 19:35
"Well, in my opinion, killing stuff is one of the finest ways to open a relationship. We may be a violent military pirate state, but no one can say we don't enjoy our work!"
Max flipped the channel before his commander could open her mouth, establishing a line with 1010102.
"The past is in the past, big guns are in the future. Let's rock!"
The ship, its guns still out, swung into a brief orbit of the planet and released a diplomatic cutter.
"Control, this is Leutnant Kleist, Schnapsemarine here, carrying Oberst-Leutnant Grunnings of the diplomatic korps for a diplomatic meeting with the local leadership. Flight plan?"
"Good thing." He then closed the com line to the nova ships.
"Now to deal with the that star destroyer. Get me HighCom Alpha."
"HighCom Alpha on line sir."
"Whats the problem Captain?"
"We received a signal from a new nation and a star destroyer showed up.It is currently within range of the planet and has weapons powered up. If it fires on the planet or anyone else we will need the firepower to take it out."
'We will send one Devastation class SD and four cruisers and fourteen frigates that should be enough firepower to take out a star destroyer."
"Thank you sir."
The link closed and the frigate waited for its reinforcements.
The battle group arrived and started to deploy near the planet.
"We have advanced in the majority of that technology. However, we are somewhat lacking in the area of nanotechnology other than using it in medicine. We've also never used neural grafting. We never really saw a practical use for either of them, other than nanomachines for use in medicine. Our race of humans tends to stay away from artificial enhancements unless it is crucial to continue living.", he said. "We may have some things which could interest you in return. What sorts of technologies and craft are you looking at?"
Master Tarson wondered how he was doing so far. He was trained in diplomacy, but this was his first time really speaking about such things with another government.
Dammit... Why couldn't the group bring along a diplomatic corp? Knights shouldn't have to do this stuff... Hell, I'm not even a government official!
House Vuliev

Sirsilav nodded, noting the open confession to being a pirate state, almost as if bragging. The Novans were clearly violent in nature, and opening up with a similiar notion would prove to have either been a very good or very bad idea. "I'm also one for the smiting of invaders, but I think we should restrain ourselves for the moment, give the hostiles a chance to explain themselves. Our defensive systems are only designed against planetary threats from the House Wars, and we would be rather prone to counterattack, including our capitol."
Maruel smiled dryly at Tarson, seeing an opportunity to demonstrate the capability of Vuliev nanotech. Once she explained herself, should work in a chance to show how her gargoyles are unphased by what would be a fatal injury on human soldiers, living or otherwise. "Our interests are in access to the technology that would allow us to construct our own spacefarring vessels as a primary priority. My nephew would rather not commit our factories, but he has forgotten the nobility of the Vulievs has not reached to the stars yet, and we should distinguish ourselves with our own vessels."
"Well, we would be more than willing to assist you in building orbital shipyards. And we would be more than happy to assist you in designing a line of ships for you. I am sure we would be able to provide you with some of our technologies for such vessels, like our FTL drives and whatnot."
"I might be able to get a diplomat to arrange the donation of several frigates to your new nation."
OCC: the will be old ones.
House Vuliev
09-06-2006, 20:57
Maruel smiled and nodded in affirmation. "Such shipyards would be satisfactory, and I am sure we can come up with designs satisfactory to our methods once we have integrated the neccesary technology. Of course, there will be the matter of what we offer in exchange. Given your predisposition against our neural grafting technology, I am willing to offer a demonstration of the durability of our nanite-based combat units, these gargoyles."
OOC: 1010102, who is your representative, and where is he? Sirislav had to terminate communications.
"Very well. How would you like to demonstrate them? I do have guards onboard the shuttle who could assist if you wish."
OCC: he is on his way.
IC: The diplomat arrived in system soon after the reinforcements.
His shutle landed and he asked to talk with the king of Vuliev.
"My nation wishes to arrange a donation of 3 frigates to your nation."

The courtier met the representative of 1010102 outside the capitol building. He was garbed in a simple affair of solid white with two crossing ebon sashs to identify his service to the elder monarch himself. Although only a servant, his being a servant of the first Vuliev granted him an Ethereal Custodian. "Such a donation would serve to better the monarchy. My Custodian has informed my liege of this, and I am certain he shall communicate his thanks shortly."
The Ethereal's holographic projection swirled suddenly, and formed the floating head of a rather obese figure wearing an ornate amulet around his neck; it was the elder monarch. "Your coming direct to my door would have been viewed as presumptuous, but the gift of spacecraft is most appreciated and easily dismisses the error of coordinates. Tell me, representative, when can I expect my new assets?"

The shuttle touched down, extending a ramp as an autocannon in the nose took stock of the pad with its internal camera. Several Schnapsemarinetruppen (http://www.armageddon3.com/English/Campaign/Troops/images/death2.gif)marched out in two lines, swung to face eachother, and positively clicked to attention, saluting as an officer strolled out. In a deliberate gesture, the diplomatic korps officers made no consetion to their station other than their collar patches, which were indeciferable without a Schnapseheer handbook. They simply dressed like any other officer, including sword and laspistol.

Ostiar Vuliev stood ready and waiting, his escort consisting of eight Ethereals with internal weapon mounts. Such weapons would not be neccesary here, but the show of force would probably be something of pride in the face of such a, as his uncle Sirislav described, violent civilization. Ostiar himself had rather visible veins that suggested frailty, but he carried himself with a quiet dignity and an aura suggesting hidden strength. "Greetings, representative of Nova Boozia. "Oh, there it is again."
"What, ma'am?"
"Re-enforcing every patrol ship and its second cousin's niece with a battlefleet. Open a universal chanel."
"Opened, ma'am. Fire away."

"Well you can't really blame us for trying to save our and this planet's asses, can you? We want open hostilities here just as much as a band of pot smokin' hippies. But, we've dealt with the Sephrion before, when they arrived in our home system with the Doombringer and all guns at the ready. They changed their minds pretty quick when we sent in a group to intercept them. Hopefully they change their minds here, as well."

OOC: just to try to calm it down a bit..
IC:
"This is the Goriasa to all ships. We suggest that each fleet hyperspace out of the system, leaving only one scout-class vessel to represent them. As a guesture of goodwill, we will be leaving first. Over and out, hopefully for good"
The Entire NSAA fleet, short the single scoutship that was first to arrive, enter hyperspace and leave.

OOC: Boozians aren't calm under any circumstances, although some of the more screwloose officers find violence soothing.
IC: "Thank you. And now, if there's bo prospect of a scrap, we're off. We'll be back for our boat soon."
The ship tore out of reality.
