300km East of Verdan, Aequatius Secundus

The large vessel sat in the water, parts of the hull were marked with rust and its communications and detection systems removed along with the masts they called home. The Ledgerwood had served the fleet well, in her prime she provided the Navy's ballistic missile submarines with the supplies they needed in order to defend the nation from all threats that sat posed against the Republic. The only identity that remained was the large white "3" still painted on the prow, she was the third sister of the Hopper class submarine tenders and after years of service, she unknowingly awaited for her demise at the hands of a new weapons system. After being removed from service and decommissioned, she sat at a scrapping yard along with other vessels no longer fit for serivce for the Republic and watched as others were dismantled slowly on a daily basis and sold of for their bare elements, including a number of her sisters. Now she lay waiting for death at the hands of a reaper she would never lay her eyes on.

Lieutenant-Colonel Sarah Bloom took off from the tarmac inside her F-1A Thanatos tactical fighter, she scoffed at the current mission, "One of the best pilots in the Eastern Command and I get passed over for service in Red Tide only to do missile tests," She thought as she ran a diagnostic on the aircraft's weapons, two AIM-132 missiles for self-defence and a load out of six new AGM-200 Typhoon Anti-Shipping Missiles. They carried 900kg warheads and a single weapon was more than capable of destroying an escort-sized vessel. She switched her radio channels and spoke, "Forester Control, this is Blue Hawk One, on course to target, will call in once I commence attack run, over."

The reply came moments later, "Affirmative, Blue Hawk One, will wait, over and out."

OOC: What I'm looking for in this is someone to provide a ship that wanders a little too close to the target zone and is damaged/sunk in the exercise.

The Perry-class frigate, U.D.S. Waltrip, was unknowingly approaching the Ledgerwood. "How's the repairs coming?" asked the skipper. "Still out, sir," replied a crewman. "We haven't been able to find the problem yet." "Very well," said the skipper. "Hold course for now untill we get the turbines running again." The Waltrip slowly continued on into the testing zone...

Colonel Bloom looked at the monitor for the aircraft's surface search radar as a target appeared and she turned on the communication channel, "Forester Control, Blue Hawk One, have attained target, initiating attack run."

"Roger that, Blue Hawk One, weapons free."

With that order she dropped the fighter to an altitude of 2,000 metres and switched on the master arm and finalized the target's position, "Blue Hawk One, firing weapons one through six, over." She said as the missiles dropped off their hardpoints and fell a short distance before their engines ignited and they streaked off into the distance. The six missiles flew forward until reaching Mach 5 before their scramjet engines engaged and they sped to nearly Mach 16 towards their target, "Weapons away, returning to base, over."

"Roger that, Colonel, good job."

"Hey captain! Do you hear that?" asked a crewman. The skipper looked up from his charts. "What the devil!?" he said as a loud jet-like noise suddenly built up in intensity over the Waltrip.

A young Air Force lieutenant watched his monitor that was connected to the large phase array structures that scanned out over the ocean. He watched as two targets appeared on the screen, however, only a single one had the signature of the Ledgerwood while the other was unidentified. The missiles were being tracked with their own signatures and he watched as they streaked in towards the unidentified vessel, "Sir, we have a situation here!" He shouted to the Major that was managing the station.

The officer walked over to the lieutenant's staiton, "What is it, son?"

"Sir, the missiles are running their course against the wrong target," He replied as he pointed to the monitor, "Blue Hawk One fired on the wrong signature."

"Fire the Phala-" was all the skipper got out before the first missle struck the bridge. It errupted in a massive explosion, rocking the ship. Three more impacted on the superstructure, destroying the hanger. The last two missles hit the hull, and blew massive holes in the ship's port side. Crewmen tried to fight against the flames, but soon gave up and abandoned ship. One of the Waltrip's SH-60 helicopters, which was on patrol, was returning to the ship when the missle's struck. They sent a distress call back to the fleet, then attemped to pick up survivors from the water as the Waltrip rolled onto its port side and sank to the bottom...

Bloom climbed down from the aircraft using the small extended metal ladder sticking out from the fuselage and stepped down onto the tarmac of the hanger when she was approached by a young lieutenant, "Colonel, Ma'am, we just recieved word that the target you engaged wasn't the Ledgerwood, but some unidentified vessel."

The pilot shook her head, "What are you talking about, I engaged the only target that showed up on my screen," She said, replaying the actions of the flight in her head.

"Well, it appears some other vessel wandered into range and was mistaken for the target ship before anything could be done," Replied the lieutenant.

"What's the status of the new ship?" Bloom asked.

"She disappeared from contact a while ago, we believe she's gone under," He said.

The sleek trimaran frigate moved through the water silently as it travelled about 40km off the Eastern coast of Aequatius Secundus as the commanding officer, Captain William Jericho, leaned on the railing outside the bridge and savoured his cigar as he looked over the water. His executive officer approached, paper in hand, "Sir, we just received a message from the Air Force Radar Station ashore, they were conducting a weapons test on a target ship and may have accidentally sunk an unknown, foreign vessel."

Jericho tossed the cigar off the side into the water below as he turned around, "Damned flyboys, can't do anything straight," He said as he looked over the paper, "Set a course for the last known whereabouts of the foreign ship and prepare the LAMPS, once we're closer, we'll need her to spot survivors."

His orders were followed immediately as the ship listed slightly as it turned to change its course and speed ahead towards the last known position of the Waltrip.

Admiral Fletcher stood on the bridge of the carrier Enterprise. "Launch 2 flights of F-14's," he ordered. "Tell them to search the area for any unknown ships or aircraft. Have 2 more flights on standby. Prep the SH-60 helicopters for search-and-rescue. Launch them as soon as the F-14's report signs of survivers."
