Stormy Weather
The True Story of one of the largest relief efforts, and the
three nations racing to the call

This Program Contains Drematic Renactments

Narrator: We're in a time of advanced meteorological forecasting and tracking. So advanced that meteorologists are extremely successful, and is a very rewarding line of work. But despite the technology one of the worst climactic shifts in recorded history, occurred w/o notice.
Damon Salien: (Meteorologist) Virtually any nation in the world has weather offices. Be it in space or on Earth. But despite that fact, this strange occurrence didn't come to notice until very late. (Stock footage, stormy skies, thunder and lightning)
Narrator: Kurona, A large but mostly isolated nation, having few connections with the "modern world" became a shooting gallery, for nature’s wrath.
Mary Hyer (Red Cross Organization) The weather in Kurona turned so bad, that hurricanes, tornados, hail, floods, and all sorts of sever weather, literally ripped the nation to pieces. Farms, the nation’s major food supply, had lost their crops. Cities we're leveled and anarchy was breaking out.
Narrator: Kurona sits on a dead center parallel in the Xanadouien Sea. This makes the climate very segregated in the north and south region, and allows for the jet stream to pass right through. In the North, winters are cold and snowy. Summers are generally mild and cool. In the south summers are hot and wet and dry and winters are mild and rainy. The center region generally receives both ends of the stick. It's not uncommon for large storm systems to pass through the entire nation. But one storm came and stayed.
Climatologist Ed Warren.
Ed: This massive storm front moved along the jet stream, from where no one knows, and instead of continuing along the jet stream, it stayed in place. How this happened is still a mystery.
Narrator: No one knows exactly how or why the storm system stayed in place. Some speculate Global warming as to why, one theory has it the jet stream changed its directional path in a reverse anti-cyclonic position. Others think an extremely rare phenomenon known as "Con Air." "Con Air" Is a phenomenon shrouded in mystery, but it is believed that a jet stream collides with another jet stream over land, creating a mass arial cyclone. This vortex pulls in and endless amount of moisture, warm and cold air surplus. It is the sixth week of Kurona’s mysterious weather flux. The economy is struggling to recover from implosion, and the weather isn't helping. Princess Tomoyo Mikanu is stressed by the thousands of reports flooding to her. She is debating whether or not to call out to the world for help.
Sally Field: (World Sociologist) Kurona is a nation with strict ideals, probably why they haven't modernized heavily. They prefer to be on their own, and not have the corrupted influence, of many nations out there. (v.o.) The Princess was raised on these values, and firmly believed them. She decided it was time to swallow her pride, and call for help.
Narrator: Tomoyo sent out her trusted advisor, and friend with a message to the world. "To send help." Li Hirihito, hastily headed to the north, where he could transmit a remote message to the world. He did it with success. (Stock footage) The Republic of Kanami, a robust nation at it's prime. The economy is thriving, and in good condition. Also the nation is coming out of a bitter dispute.
Mark Bowden: (Historian, Author Expelling Religions-Conroy vs. Koolridge) Kanami had just come out of a dispute with the nation of Stevid. Stevid had expelled anyone who practiced Islam from the nation, and Kanami saw this as a violation of human rights. Kanami felt like they lost and injustice prevailed. When Prime Minister Koolridge received the message from Kurona asking for help, he saw the perfect moment to not only help a friend and ally to the nation, but also to boost the moral of the public upset over the loss. When he called a cabinet meeting, one of the first questions thrown at him was: "Has another nation ticked you off?" (Chuckle)
Narrator: PM Steven Koolridge organized a plan to aid Kurona. He ordered a massive
C-130 air craft to load up on needed provisions. Although this was put into affect immediately, Princess Tomoyo was not informed.
Bowden: Princess Tomoyo and her cabinet, no knowledge of Kanami's stand on this whole thing. Even though their communications are limited, a message would have been received within six hours of the response. By the next day, no reply came and Tomoyo felt she had been abandoned, by the international community. She wrote in her diary "have we been forsaken?" You know, did the international community ignore Kurona's pleads for help? She felt at that point, that no one cared about Kurona, and on one was coming to help, and that basically they were on their own.
Narrator: Little did the Princess know however, that Kanami was assembling their task force. And also another nation Czardas most generously opened up.
Bowden: Here was a nation at war, and they we're also going to help. Prime Minister Koolridge, Praised Czardas for their selfless act.
Narrator: Several helicopters took off from Czardas, en-route to the Capital City Sonomi. Meanwhile the C-130 took was plagued by heavy snow storms in the north. The turbulence proved to be to great for the aircraft, sending it down to the ground.
Bowden: This proved to be a problem for Kanami b/c this was the most direct and shortest rout into Kurona, and down to Sonomi. If it would go any other way it would have to do an aerial refueling, which can be very hard in bad weather, or try to make it with the tank on empty.
Narrator: Prime Minister Koolridge sought assistance from the most unlikely source. Stevid.
Sally Field: (World Sociologist) Stevid was a nation looked upon with bitter resentment, and Koolridge swallowed his pride, and asked the government if they would allow for a small navel/air force, to launch from their waters, solely for helping Kurona. (v.o.) The cabinet Stevid almost rejected Koolridge’s request, but Conroy convinced them, that Kanami will hold to the Non Aggression Pact, and also said Kurona is closet to them in location, and this could just as easily happen to them, and that they we’re the most capable of mounting a relief effort. (end v.o.) So in the end, they almost wholeheartedly accepted Kanami's requests, and joined themselves.
Narrator: The K.S.S. Yasashii proceeded along side the ships from Stevid The HMS Frightful and the HMS Johnson. All treaded through the harsh waters to get to Kurona's southern coast. Back on the mainland, as the Helicopters moved to Sonomi, several picked up a distress signal. A few diverted to the crashed C-130 to rescue any survivors.
Pilot Mike Durrant, was in the cockpit.
Durrant: (C-130 Pilot) I was pinned in the cockpit, most of my crew we're dead, or thrown from the aircraft. My back was broken, and I couldn't move. (v.o.) It was freezing in there, and of course my GPS which had a homing beacon was busted. I thought I was going to die there.
Narrator: Durrant fell in and out of consciousness, not able to hear the rescue crew.
Martien Beck: (Rescue Crew) We almost missed him. (v.o.) We found pretty much all the crew, and the wreckage was significant. Then out of nowhere, we heard screaming. It was someone shouting for help, we searched one more time (end v.o.) and sure enough he was there.
N: Durrnat is airlifted out. Back at sea the ships are still slowly proceeding to the coast. But something had caught the attention of the Johnson. A faint radio signal, and stray RADAR signal, was picked up moment ago. A ship in distress. The ship was a charter boat, under the lease of Paul and Molly Christopher.
Paul Christopher: We we're trying to get back to Kruona, after spending some time in another county, b/c we heard the weather was supposed to get bad. Hopping we could beat the storms, we sailed but we ended up getting caught in a storm anyway.
N: The Christopher's two children 13 year old Rosette, and 11 year old Joshua, we're also with their parents in the boat.
Rosette: It was so rough, and really scary. I've never seen a storm so strong. I was sure we we're going to sink. All I could do was pray.
N: Paul managed to send out a distress call on a small radio. However the radio died shortly after. To make matters worse, Molly was seven months pregnant.
Molly: I was horribly sea sick and frightened. But I tried to comfort Rosette and Josh as best as I could.
N: While the family waited, the Johnson was well on its way. It made its way through the darkness, hoping to find the vessel before the waves would claim it.
Lt. James Murdock: Looking at the waves, I wasn't sure we we're going to make it in time
N: The Johnson hopes to catch the attention of the boat, by shooting off flares. It worked.
Paul: I had heard some loud pops. I knew it wasn't thunder; it wasn't anything on the ship. So I climbed up on deck, and I saw red contrails streaming down. I somehow, almost instinctively knew that those we're likely from ships. So I ran back down, grabbed the lantern from the hook, which is basically the only light my family had down there, and just waved it around.
N: The Captain of the Johnson barley saw the faint light, and proceeded directly to it.
Murdock: I was fearing we would run the boat over. (v.o.) The way it was bobbing in the water was truly frightful.
Narrator: As the Johnson lined up against the boat, to shield it from the waves and the wind, the rescue workers saw Molly's condition. This made the first goal, to get her off.
Vernon Dahl: (Rescue Worker) I couldn't believe my eyes, when I saw this poor lass. She looked very ill, and I knew this was going to be difficult. (v.o.) First my self, and others pulled her off, and then we called for the son. He ran and jumped, and we caught him perfectly. Then the daughter ran, and nearly missed. Fortunately we caught her, thank God for that. And finally the father ran and jumped. And the ship was thrown off into the darkness.
Narrator: Meanwhile in Kurona, what was once farmland was now a giant flood. Christina Vaughn, and her two children huddled together on the roof, of their now submerged farm house.
Christina Vaughn: (flood survivor) My self, my daughter, and my son we're pinned. (v.o.) We woke up in the middle of the night, to find the room half submerged in about knee deep water. (end v.o.) I was panicked; I had to get us onto the roof fast! (v.o.) We sat there for about and hour, the rain was falling off and on. Eventually the house broke from it's foundation and my daughter slipped.
N: Caley, Christina's daughter was pulled by the rushing waters
Caley Vaughn: (Flood Survivor) I was scared beyond all reason. (v.o.) I was strugling in the churning waters, I thought for sure I was going to drown. I managed to climb onto something, it may have been a table, or a large plank or something. I was freezing, I couldn't stop shivering. I think I cried for a while too. Eventually I drifted to sleep, and I had this strange dream that an Angel Appeared to me, and said "Wake Up Micaley" (end v.o.) And I woke up.
N: It would be another several hours before Caley would be found.
Christina: I had prayed for a long time, when Caley fell off. I prayed she would be safe, I prayed that we would be rescued soon, I prayed that I would find Caley.
N: Christina and her son we're rescued by a Czdarian group. Both we're loaded into a boat, and taken. What happened next amazes many of the people that we're in the boat.
Rescue Worker: We we're passing along, and something caught the attention of the woman that we had found. (v.o.) She jumped out and swam right to where her daughter was sprawled out, and woke her up, and put her daughter on her back, and swam right back to us. (end v.o.) She was absolutely amazing.
Christina: I guess running a farm and raising two children by my self, has made me really strong.
N: Back in Sonomi, Tomoyo waits patiently for the much needed aid, from the three nations. After dispatching her troops to meet with the Stevid and Kanami Navy, she plans further action with her defense minister, something catches her attention.
Bowden: Several large Czdarian Aircraft hover in over the city, and Tomoyo is shocked. She's never seen aircraft in person before.
N: Lt. Thomas Irian is in charge of airlifting the princess. But under request she wished to speak to him first.
Princess Tomoyo Mikanu: (Ruler of Kurona) I really wanted to show my gratitude to him, for risking so much to help us.
Lt. Thomas Irian: (Czardas Airlifting Unit) I went to greet her like she requested, and she just fell to her knees, and thanked me, I could tell she was really happy to see us. I clasped her hands and reassured her, we we're there to help.
N: Tomoyo is airlifted out of the city, but much to her hesitancy
Princess Tomoyo: I wasn't so sure that I wanted to leave my people, in this time of need
N: After a small debate, Tomoyo is lifted out of the city and flown to an undisclosed location. Out side the city, there are several camps to hold the refugees from the bad weather.
Mary Hyer: (Red Cross Organization) That was a very wise move, to set up camps for all the people. And they we're kept in excellent condition, and you couldn't ask for anything more.
Man: (Camp Resident) I was just glad to be out of the rain, and to have food. And the food was pretty good sometimes.
N: Meanwhile Aqua Anu's Heiress Princess Subaru is troubled by the news of the devastation and disaster. Aqua Anu's navy was already stockpiling enough food to ship to Kurona. It would take weeks.
Princess Subaru: (Princess of Aqua Anu) I was troubled. I had done some storm surveying on south coast of A-AN, and found we we're quite vulnerable. I just wanted to help right now instead of waiting for the weather to die down, like the Navy was with the food supplies. And I was going to get there anyway I could. I told my mother she wasn't too happy. But she agreed to have me flown there, b/c I was about ready to pull up the sails and just sail there.
Bowden: Aqua Anu really was an all Navel Force still at this point; they don't have jet fighter aircraft, or long range bombers or carriers. Jet liners for public use are about as close as it gets, but those are rarely used, as more people sail.
N: At the South Shores of Kurona, a Stevid Task force has set up base camp, however the Yasashii is late.
Capt. Garrison: (Captain of the Yasashii) We took on some water which proved to be a big mess to clean up and get all our systems running again.
N: Garrison orders the Black Hawk Helicopters to be deployed to mark the rendezvous point.
Garrison: We we're worried they would leave with out us.
N: Three Miles from the Task Force some Kurona troops walked into an abandoned city, and into an ambush.
General William Henry Harrison (Ret. Kurona Army) What was sad about this, is two of the soldiers accidentally shot a woman and her child that got caught in the crossfire
N: All soldiers declined to comment. Back at the South Beaches, Garrison finally arrives and his men are ready to ship out. Eventually all groups meet up with each other and begin the project to drain Sonomi of its flood waters, and restore order
Garrison: It was a mess. I could tell the Government was desperate. Anarchy, fires, looting, it was a nightmare. The nation wasn't at war but it surly looked like a war zone.
N: Finally after weeks of harsh weather, sunshine finally peered through the darkened sky.
Hyer: Once the sunshine came in, everyone was happy. The camps lit up with joy and excitement. You'd think they haven't seen sun shine in years, and mind you most of their homes are still destroyed or underwater.
Tomoyo: To see blue sky again, was the most wonderful thing. I was fearing we would only see black skies.
N: All in all Kurona suffered a great deal. Estimated Debt Costs we're in the Billions.
Field: If that storm lasted just one more week, it probably would have reached 1,000,000,000,000,000 Kuromians in Debt.
N: Kanami would help Kurona work out it's K90,000,000,000 Debt. And Stevid would also be a contributing factor
Bowden: About Three weeks after the storm was reported dissipated, Kurona made a pact with the Stevid Empire. And Tomoyo awarded the Raven Cross to every top ranking General, and the Prime Minister who we're involved in this. Kanami of course received the same honors. And slowly troops began to pull out as domestic Government took control.
N: Kanami was pleased with the outcome but disappointed with the rest. Columnist Jason Mokachi wrote several editorials and is forming it into a book called "The only ones who cared."
Jason Mokachi: What amazes me, not counting Aqua Anu, that only three nations went to help. As to why the world could be so apathetic, I don't know. Aqua Anu is of course way to far from Stevid to just sail as the whole nation does. Which is why they waited for the weather died.
N: Scientists are still looking into what caused the extreme disturbances above Kurona.
Warren: It's still a mystery. We are searching, Stevid is searching, we are just not sure.
Salien: Global Warming, Solar Disturbances, Ocean Current Disturbances, there are so many things we are not even sure of. It could be this strange Con Air affect, maybe.
N: Kurona is slowly returning back to normal, but can it ever be normal again?
Christina: We had a close call, but I thank the Lord that I have my children with me, both safe; we are someplace safe and dry. The waters around our farm will drain; you know things can be replaced.
Tomoyo: I couldn't imagine what we would have done this on our own as we have feared, in the beginning. Kurona of course was no great contributing nation to the world, so why would anyone want to have helped us?
Steven Koolridge: Turning our backs on them could have been the lowest thing we could ever do to them. There was no way I was going to leave them to fend for them selves. Even if I had to sneak through nations, or did have to go to a nation we had resentments with, it's all part of politics. I hope the people there can recover and get back to life.
Mokachi: Yasashii Himura would have been proud and ashamed at the same time. Proud of the nations that helped, ashamed of the world that didn't.
N:Thousands left homeless, and hundreds dead one can only wonder what does the future of weather have.
Warren: I think Kurona will be a teaching tool for all meteorologists, climatologists, and Global Warming scientists. What happened in Kurona could happen elsewhere.
Tomoyo: There is nothing more I can say other than THANK YOU. I bow to you.
