(OOC: An idea (FT))
There doesnt seem to be much going on on the FT front these days, mostly it seems to be because nobody is really sure of where anybody is and all that sort of thing.
So, I would like to propose an idea:
Converting the 'Earth' system to FT, starting Galaxy II or something like that.
The idea would be to provide map (galaxy level, marking off planets and such) of the exact position of each players empire/worlds/federation/whatever, players would record the numbers of their forces (which would be subject to some sort of moderation), and all that. This would all take place on the NS forums for convinience and because Galaxy II would be open to players who were not members who want to RP, although they would have to be exploration parties or something similar.
To start with, each player would have control of something between a system (Of about nine planets) or even just one planet (in order to share systems), you would be able to expand from there. Having a larger population offers no big advantages, I want a level playing field for people in this, which means that technology will also be watched.
The same freeformness of NS will apply to a somewhat limited degree, you are free to ignore whoever you want for whatever reason you want, although I would advise talking to a GII moderated (once we get some) in order to work out your differences.
I think that this will do a great deal of good for the NS FTers, giving us a nice playing field where before we were stuck in a mudpit, wallowing about in the hopes of not getting ignored.
So, if your interested, post. Ill start work on the rules and such a bit later.
If you wish to talk more, post here or TG me, I usually check my TGs every day.

If you're bored, reply to the flagship battle, damn you Otagia!
Whoops. Will do so immediately. In the morning. When the pain in my tooth subsides. Damned softballs...

What are you talking about? There's plenty of things going on in FT, perhaps you need glasses? For I seem to recall a war raging between the GE and the GFFA at the moment, while I myself are campaigning throughout Quagonia. Hyperspatial Travel should be blowing himself up out there, and countless other things are happening at all times.
But as for your idea, I don't think it's that practical. I don't like the idea of being confined to something like this, hence why I didn't join the last Galactic Map. Plus I like living in my own little world.:p
This map was already done quite a few months ago, I won't bother to search for it now, but you can try.
If this thing takes off...
I claim a small/moderate sphere centered around a system on the outer arm of the galaxy!
Oh and the clan Tymbrimi! and its client races!
You will be the Tandu Bugs?
Who will be the Galactic Institutes?...They are suppose to be BIG and Neutral...I'll send a few reps...So what do you think?
oh yeah...this galaxy (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=485060) is sorta like what you wanted no?
Me li, no. Just no. Please stop posting about Brin stuff in half of my topics, it gets annoying. One galaxy, using your own nation, claiming one system to start with.
Anyway...
This galactic map will obviously be different from the other galactic map. Ill work on it once I have access to a computer with a mouse, not just a touchpad, unless you all want a nice angular galaxy.
<grin>
Ok...sorry bout the brin stuff. You never said anything before! Besides Most of your threads start out with Brin's Tandu! so what is a sci-fi guy suppose to think? Now that I know I'll not bring it up again. Sorry one last time...err you sure? :p
***
So it will be like a GalCiv 2 thing? One system roughly equal tech...you have a back story as why we would all just have one system and the same tech?
As for the Galaxies you can always just grab a picture of a random galaxy and color in the territories. That is what The Scandinvans did.
thrashia-that is a sweet site. I take back my advise...that star map refernce works well...

This sort of thing already came up, when US and others created the Star Wars Genesis thing. Heres a link if your interested:

I didn't join the galactic map because of my national personality: raiders who issue forth from their unknown dens, blow up some ships, land troops, pillage, burn, and, if there are humans on the planet, rape, and run home again. If anyone ever found out where I lived, I'd be a sitting duck.
N.B.
That sounds like fun!
I noticed that there really arent that many systems on the map...hyperspace reasons? or what? I also noticed that there were alot of Unknown Regions...You could technically be from those places right?
Bugs,
Is this sorta what you had in mind? A universe that has established rules, Empires and Techs, etc...? That will be hard unless you declare an established culture/sci-fi world. The Trekkies and the Star Wars verses are some of the more fleshed out an intricate ones. Do you plan on remaking the Wheel? LOL...or jump straight to grav-liftors.
<upliftverse><cough>
Here is a link (http://www.tikipod.net/galaxymap.jpg) to a clean map that they are using over in that Starwars version of your idea.
I like this idea and I would happily join. *smiles*

Sorry. I can't. I just joined several other very busy threads.

You can do that as well, it makes things more interesting when theres a risk that people might find you. You could build movable bases, or just have people who are able to pack increadibly fast. It would be great to have some random pirate raids as well, a map would also make things easier for you.
AS to tech, I think it would be safe to allow any reasonable tech, where 'reasonable' is defined by some mods Ill pick out.
The reason for people only having one planet each would be pretty simple. You either 'start over' (IE: Write a short backstory about how your civilization came to power on your world), or a colony ship arrives from somewhere, and starts a colony somewhere.
Of course, brining in reinforcements from outside GII would not be allowed in either case, GII is totaly seperate from NS, 'cause there is a giant invisible barrier of doom around it. So nah.
So yes, basically its a bit like Galactic Civlizations 2.
I have a different map I plan to use, it should work out quite well.
OK I'm in! Please, telegram me when you have it worked out.
I promise to be annoying.:p

I'll join in. And yes, random pirate raids are extremely fun. It gives me a wonderful freedom. Even badguy nations have "moral" obligations to do mean and evil things, but I can do whatever the hell I feel like.
