There are "stickies" (threads permanently attached to the top of the forums) for you begginers to read.

Welcome to NS!

Be sparing with smilies, or people will just go OMG N00b and never take you seriously.

IN CHARACTER - Abbreviated to IC, this is when you are roleplaying an official document or message, or writing about goings-on in your nation, or anything like that. War, and stuff.

OUT OF CHARACTER - Abbreviated to OOC, this is when you are speaking about real things in the real world, or making comments yourself rather than as a character in a roleplay.

GRAMMAR AND SPELLING - They always help. Make a little effort to tidy up a post just before you press Okay, and it'll make all the difference. If you habitually misspell due to your typing speed, get some practice.

ROLEPLAY - Abbreviated to RP. Made-up people doing made-up things in a made-up nation (Yours or someone else's). This includes Diplomacy, Trade, War, Party Political Broadcasts, TV Adverts... basically anything that you want to make a roleplay about.

LURK - This is good advice for a new nation. Look at other people's threads, read them and note the styles of language they use, and use this knowledge to improve your own.

GOOD LUCK - You'll need it.

Firstly, I would really advise you to read the rules, because Moderators do enforce them (and rightly so!). So, I would really advise you to stop by in The One-Stop Rules Shop (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=416023) thread; it might save you from troubles with Moderation in the future.

Second, don’t overuse/abuse smiles, particularly in serious RPGs (there are times when smiles are alright, though).

Thirdly, if you are interested in role-playing (and I hope you are, new players are always welcome), here is a little guide to approach it with minimum mistakes:

First of all, I would advise you to begin by reading other people’s threads in International Incidents and/or NationStates forums. Once you feel you have read enough of how role-playing in different technology levels (Tech Level/TL) are conducted, it is probably the best time to decide what your nation’s TL will be (though nothing prevents you from deciding it from the beginning, if you already know what you want your nation to be; you may even create different nations to role-play in TLs). Nowadays, most RPGs take place in Modern Tech (MT) or Future Tech (FT); MT is pretty much what we have today, plus/minus ten or so years, while FT is usually space-scale role-playing (ground battle can also take place in there, but it will ultimately be fleets of spaceships that will decide the war’s outcome), think of Star Wars or Babylon 5 (from the movies), or Crest of the Stars or Legend of Galactic Heroes (from the anime).

Once you decide what your nation’s overall TL is, it is probably a good thing to develop some more details about your nation. You can do it either by starting introduction (Intro) thread (for example, inviting fellow leaders from the same tech level to a diplomatic meeting), over course of which you describe different aspects of your nation and establish your first diplomatic relations, or by creating a page about your nation. If you choose the second (which is probably good thing to do sooner or later anyway), a good place to start would be NSwiki (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page), where you can easily create pages with detailed information about your nation, and also important characters, alliances, wars, and about anything else.

This should make you fully ready to partake in role-playing, even if you had no previous experience with it (experience will come with time, don’t worry). Have fun!
