News of a treaty between the People’s Republic of China and the Khailfah al Muslimeen sent small shockwaves across the United Kingdom this afternoon as the Philadelphia and Barent Exchanges both dropped nearly 100 points by the close of the trading day. The announcement comes at a time of increased tension between the Khailfah and the United Kingdom, as the row over what Muslims across the world call an ‘insulting’ and ‘degrading’ assault on their faith.

Official reaction from His Majesty’s Government in Imperium, however, was far more subdued. Howard Winchester, Minister of State for International Relations, said that the treaty was ‘but a mere formality’ as the main points of the treaty, mostly relating to trade and defence affairs, were ‘long established, if unofficial, government practices.’

Winchester went on to allay the fears of a rising Muslimeen-Chinese power in the east, adding in his daily press briefing that the United Kingdom understands the Khailfah’s sphere of influence ‘to reside primarily in the Indian Ocean and central and western Asian continent.’ Ministry of Defence officials, however, spoke anonymously of a concern of a possible build up of Khailfah military forces in the western Pacific to defend Islam against western secularism.

His Majesty's Government has issued no formal statement concerning the alliance, though Prime Minister Kilroy was quoted as saying that "it's no great step forward or backward--the two countries have maintained the terms of this treaty for some time now, and it only makes since to write those down for records' sake. I don't see this as leading to, or springing from, a radical change in the policy of the Khailfah."

In the United Kingdom, the government reaction was similarly subdued, with Minister of State for International Relations expressing an opinion similar to that of PM Kilroy. However, it seems the formalization of ties between the KLM and China will have wider-ranging effects in the UK over the coming months, as UK stock exchanges dropped over 100 points, and anonymous government officials making concerned statements about KLM arms build-ups.

In other news, the Ministry of Defense made public today plans to move a carrier battle group of the Imperial High Seas Fleet to St. Nazaire, a Malkyeri enclave in western France. The Defense Minister stressed that the movement had nothing to do with the tensions between the UK and the KLM...
