Reporting from St. Sacroston, Minnechusettsfornia
It is now nearly 11:00 p.m. in central Minnechusettsfornia, and with over 97.8% of all precincts reporting, we can safely report the results of this year's elections. Those involved viewers who have been watching for the last few hours will already know most of the makeup of the new government, but for those of you just joining us, the most significant outcome is unquestionably the large gains made by the People's Labor Alliance, who captured an additional nine seats in the Senate, polling high even in more affluent regions by campaigning on a social justice platform. The results of the election come after a year of confrontations, both military and diplomatic, with far-right and self-declared capitalist nations, not to mention increasingly alarming trends in the neighboring supercapitalist nation of Mooshland, and the return of the infamous Kraven Corporation. With their new victories, the PLA now holds a total of 40 seats in the senate, putting them even with the Conservative party, who, barring any sudden changes, appear at this hour to have suffered a net loss of two of their seats.
We can also safely report that President Theodore Reynolds has handily won a second term with 61% of the vote. We go now to his campaign headquarters, where he is commenting on the new makeup of the legislature.
I would like to congradulate the leaders of the PLA on their victories, and I look forward to working with them to make a better life for the impovershed, and for all other citizens of this great nation as well.
The Presidents own party, the Democratic Liberals, lost a few seats to the socialists as well, but still holds a commanding majority out of the six parties with 61 of 200 seats, though they will still need to rely on support from their coalition with the Environmentalist party (47 seats) and sympathetic PLA members from the former Labor and Social Democrat parties.
In comparatively minor news, the National Capitalist party lost two of their seven seats. Their leader condemned the PLA and vowed to "fight the >expletive removed< commies and their heathen friends in the Maison Bleu to the last!" The sixth party, the Liberty and Education party, won three unexpected victories tonight as well, putting their own total at six. They have also been condemned by the National Capitalists as "egghead islamofascists who stand adamantly against capitalism and traditional values."
Conservative party leaders declined to comment, but junior members indicated that they are hopeful they will still be able to find common ground with the majority coalition.
The PLA has declared that they will continue to advance the concerns of the common man within the nation and around the world.
We'll be back later with more news as it comes to us. This is Anita Brown, reporting from FYI headquarters, St. Sacroston.
((OOC: The PLA is a kinda maistream party formed from the smaller Communist, Social Democrat, and Labor parties. No stalinism here.))
