M-73 Infantry Support Gun

The M-73 ISG is an innovative design by Belistand Armaments, drawing on Belistandi experience during their late insurrection. During that conflict, Belistandi rebels put some light artillery on top of trucks, turning them into crude, but serviceable, self-propelled guns that were also pressed into service as tank destroyers and troop carriers. Formed shortly after the insurrection, Belistand Armaments took this basic concept and polished it.

The M-73 is armed with a 4-inch 52-caliber artillery gun and one .308 caliber machine gun for self-defense. Using normal ammunition a maximum range of 17,500 yards can be obtained for HE, or 750 yards using a depleted round AT sabot. More typically, when engaging tanks, the M-73 loads a smart shell which fires an explosively formed penetrator above the target. However, the M-73 is intended to more commonly engage in direct fire to knock out an enemy strong point or prevent an overrunning of Rosdivan troops. The effects of rapid-fire canister rounds, up to eight per minute, upon a charging enemy is somewhat disturbing to the uninitiated.

In addition to supporting infantry, the M-73 is also capable of carrying up to six soldiers externally; a support bar around the vehicle and harnesses are provided for this purpose. Partly as a result, armor protection is somewhat weak. The M-73 can withstand .50-caliber machine gun fire, but not much above that. A MONKEY active protection system is equipped to deal with ATGMs and rockets however. Though the M-73 is advertised as containing safety measures to protect the crew in case of ammunition bin detonation, in truth, detonation of the onboard ammunition results in some pretty fireworks and a set of “Regret to inform…” telegrams.
