History:

Forty years ago the Empire of Voltair was torn apart from within by a mixture of circumstances the government failed to end. From famine, to plague, to rebellion, to foriegn invasion, to royal gluttony, and all other sorts of corruption, Voltair simply imploded upon itself, dividing the nation into several hundred counties and states. Anarchy in it's purest form had developed, and it seemed that the Empire of Voltair had been swept away from the face of the earth.

However, from the ashes emerged figures destined to change the course of history. Victor Mornov was born approximatly five years before collapse of the Empire, leaving him but a child growing up in the hell that was Eastern Voltair. However, by the time he was a man, he had become a figure of some importance. At the age of 21, he was the Commander of a small Mercenary Army in the East, hired on by several warring counties to both sabotage one another and keep the fiends of the east at bay. He won the respect of both his employers and his enemies, fighting valiantly by the sides of his men, all the while commanding the battle. It was not long before Mornov grew tired of perpetuating the never ending cycle of petty wars, and with the support of the local peoples, ousted several dukes, lords and 'Kings' from power. The land currently known as Germany quickly fell under the influence of Mornov, as the Eastern Raiding Kingdoms dissinigrated under a vicious campaign supported by newly developed heavy artillery pieces. After fighting a series of alliances composed of Western and Southern Germany, Mornov continued West, his eyes set upon Paris. However Paris was still under the tyranical rule Emporer Jaquenis Mortalli, the rotting gluttonous ruler of a small kingdom known at Mortal. Scared to near death, Mortalli bound to his side a confederacy of Duchies, Kingdoms and Districts, assembling an army of some 200,000. However Mornov, armed with a newly developed weapon known as the 'Barrage', met the dissorganized army in a series of engagements with his force of but 85,000. Victory followed Mornov, as cheering crowds welcomed the General, dressed in a simple black trench coat, he dumped nearly 1/5 the Emporer's wealth into the streets of Paris and Berlin. Two years after the execution of Mortalli, the entirety of the new republic had been secured. At the age of forty five, The Imperial Republic of Voltair was under the complete control of Grand General Victor Mornov. His armies, mostly Veteran, stand by his side, ready to take on any foe their commander deem a threat... eager to spread the glory of the Republic to all corners of the world...

(OOC: you mentioned that Voltair was torn apart by foreign invasion forty years ago, in my factbook (though it's not explained in great detail, just tidbits here and there) it says that I owned more so I'm thinking maybe we should link this and have a psuedo rivalry between our nations, cool?)

(Lets assume he was taken to Paris)

Paris, Western Voltair

The city of Paris was not the glorious, lavish city it once was. There were no grand palaces... no golden statues, no rich libraries... no, those things were destroyed in the Unification, and never rebuilt. Paris was a bland city, rain seemingly keeping it under constant sorrow. Now there were no horrific scenes of poverty, no starving on the streets, but a constant aura of mediocrity. Units of soldiers often marched down the streets. The people traded, going about their daily business... hangings were still quite common in the city, as Royal Loyalists were convicted by the day, and hung shortly after. The people however seemed numb to it, merely walking by the gallows as men screamed for help, or as Military Police clubbed brigands in the street... the people of Voltair were... unusual to say the least.

The Caldonnian diplomat was promptly taken to the Dirigeant, the massive governmental building in which nearly all high level government work was done. Over three hundred Imperial Guard were stationed around the premesis, constantly on the look out for nearly non-existant insurgents. The Emissary was taken to High Commander Charles DeMarque in the foriegn wing. The General some 38 years of age was caught by suprise as the man entered the clearly hectic room. He, like the other twenty some men present were dressed in black officers uniforms, fully equipped with golden buttons, medals and other various insignia. As the doors of the room swung open, the men cast a deathly stare at the foriegner, as a massive map of the Candesteinian Netherlands had clearly been sprawled out over the table, drawings and figurines clearly placed on several locations. DeMarque smiled, walking to the diplomat, leading him into the hallway and closing the large oak doors behind him.

"Welcome... please excuse our current situation... things are still quite hectic around here...", DeMarque walked down the hallway, opening doors, searching for an empty room, the Caldonnian following the entire way. "Here we go... please sit... can I get you a drink?", the General questioned, opening a random droor and pulling out a container of brandy, pouring himself a glass, and setting another infront of the diplomat. "Unfortnatly, General Mornov is... away on urgent business, and could not be here for the meeting... please accept his appologies.", DeMarque lit up a cigar and sat down, relaxing for what seemed to be the first time in years, "Now... what is the nature of your visit?"

Developtments in Voltair

Line of Iron Has Been Completed. The Line of Iron in the south has been completed. A system of stone, dirt and woon fortifications has been created throughout the south, North of the Candesteinian Border. The Line begins approximtly 1/2 mile north of the Pyrenees Mountains Northern Base, it stretches from the Atlantic to the Mediteranean. The line consists of miles of trenches, systems of fortifications, bunkers, and various traps. The trenches were some 5 feet deep, with wooden spikes driven from the frontal edges to ward off charging enemy troops. Stone and earthen fortifications, housing both 12 pounder artillery guns and troops stand every half mile or so, creating bulwarks of defense against any assault on the line.

Behind the initial trench lines come even more. When one system of trenches appears lost, soldiers can simply fall back through designated tunnels to the next line, and so on, and so forth. Inside the trench systems are artillery batteries, consisting of several cannons ranging from 8 pounders to 24 pounders. Sharp shooters are placed every so often with rifles, and there is the occassional rocket launching system set up throughout the trenches. Though horribly innaccurate, with a massive frontal assault, they were bound to hit somthing. Starting about 150 yards infront of the first trench were pits. Holes dug six feet deep with wooden spikes driven into the ground below. These holes were well covered, nearly invisible to the unsuspicious eye.

There were some 475,000 soldiers on active duty throughout the line, about 275,000 actually in the trenches, 200,000 waited some 1/2 mile in reserve, always waiting for the order to move. If there was a specific area assaulted, they would be signaled, and move to it. In addition to these reserves, there were also some 39,000 men the immidiate area of Southern Voltair capable of being summoned and thrown into the fray. These militia, while not the crack troops of the Imperial Army, could fire a musket. Any attack from the south would be doomed to fail. Not only would they be forced to climb the pyrannes, they would face impenatrable defenses as they arrived, with Veteran troops manning the defenses in the south.

"Greetings," the diplomat responded after being taken into the office. "No thank you, I'm fine," the elf replied in response to the offer. "I apologise, but if you do not object, I would like to get straight to business.

When I departed from Caladonn, I was instructed to look for trade opportunities, and to sound out a possible coalition against the vile power of Canadstein. However, on the way my ship was contacted by a fast sloop, which informed me of startling events. It appears that not only are you at war, but your declaration has forced the hand of the Imperial Senate, if you don't mind my saying so, and now we are also attacking Canadstein in North America, the Atlantic, and the Indian Ocean. There is the small matter of a potential cession by Canadstein, but I don't think you need to worry as the chance of that succeeding is very remote.

However, regardless, we now find ourselves in the position of having a de facto alliance with your nation. Tell me, how does the war go?"

DeMarque smiled, he had never seen an elf before... he had always expected them to be... taller. "Well, unfortunatly, our troops levels in the South East are insufficient, however-", just then a officer, decked in black military garb burst in, carrying a report. The General quickly read over it and smiled. "Just as expected. Candestein has surrendered on all fronts, and the mainland has fallen into anarchy... it appears we have won.", the General laughed. If this was any example of what was to come, it was going to be a cake walk.

OOC: I won't respond to this till things get sorted out OOCly, but also, my ambassador is quite tall... a significant bit over six feet, which is very tall for this time.

The Republic wishes to send a representative, an officer of the Regular army who will act as diplomat as well as neutral observer as the Republic is willing to see how Voltair will fight this war.
Colonel Suvorov is a trained officer and has received extra lessons in diplomacy for the job. You can respond whenever you wish and he'll be there

The Empire wishes to express it's desire for a treaty of official peace with the Imperial Republic of Voltair, and has dispatched a diplomat in an attempt to ensure future relations between our nations remain amicable.

OOC: I share a border with you (Denmark), and if peace can be nailed down on paper, then we'll both be able to reduce our military forces there. In your case for the current war going on, and in mine to send peeps overseas.
