Ostia early modern times: Meaning 18th century

Ostia's base territory is Italy with settlements and influance spreading into africa.

The nations current population stands at 20 million. The industrial status of this nation has always been at a powerful level, economically the country is well off. Factorys turn out alot of products used for civilian and military nature, engineers and great minds are on the rise all egar to continue many experiments on how to advance society. The nation is well on it's way to being an economic power house, many jobs are avalible and at the present time people are happy with the way the nation is being run.

The goverment is ran by, his royal highness King Angelo DelaCosta III. The senete still has a major influance over the king, they speak for the people who reflect on the rulers decisons how to lead his people better than those before his time. His majesty follows in the footsteps of the great emperor Xavier II, it is his life long goal to accomplish the things he had during his reign..such as strong alliances, inflict fear into his enemys, establish trade routes and engauge in diplomatic missions to distant lands.

The Military of Ostia is very well disiplined. The main force used by the nation is infantry, the redcoat regulars are very well trained and are armed with the latest equipment known to the century. The naval forces of Ostia are also very well equiped with very skilled commanders and captians, they are seasoned sailors aswell as soldiers.

Port Of Bellomo:

The ships of the line stationed in the harbour flew their colors high and proud, the kings carriage went down the cobble stone streets along side the jettys to which the ships could be gained access. The carriage was drawn by four fine white horses, behind it a long coloum of Dragoons cantered at a stready pace. Father back coloums of Redcoated regulars marched to a steady beat of a drum and tunes comming from flutes, the Ostian flag fluttered in the wind as they continued on.

The king had been touring his newly constructed fortress on the island of Sicily. The fortress had been shaped like a star and was said to be immpenitrible, it had become naval high command and was visted personally to be inspected.

His majesty had been very impressed by the structure...

Some of The most powerful ships of the line were in the harbour at this time, "Boreas, Agamemnon and Victory", Victory being the flagship of the fleet Lord Admerial Hyde saluted the couch as it rode by and the command of,

"Attention!" echoed through the air....

Ostia Welcomes nations bearing trade aswell as those who wish to establish relations.

The Citidal: Sicily

The new fortress had been recently completed and the king had left only two days ago. Lord General Horatio Haliburton stood on the ramparts looking out into the bay where HMS Neptune was stationed,

"That is the newly commisoned 120 gun ship of the line captian?"

An infantry officer peered out towards the bay,

"Yes my lord, it is said to match the capibilites of HMS Hibernia..."

Haliburton grinned,

"Wonderful..when is the Sirin due to sail towards spain? from the mainland?"

The captian replyed,

"She has already left sir...well on her way.."

The Lord General nodded, he then turned and strolled off and the infantry captian followed close behind. The parade grounds were covered with recoats preforming drill, Dragoon units cantered in and out of the fortress gates preforming drills aswell.

The new fortress was comming along very well. The bay below the fortress was filled with ships, there were 5 74 gun ships and 6 18 to 40 gun ships along with Neptune which had a total of 120 guns.

Charles III has sent Representative Alessandro Malaspina to your country to preform dipolmatic duties.

Ostia awaits your Representative Alessandro Malaspina sent by his Majesty King Charles III. Are you bound for my mainland or my citidal on the island of Silicy?

Alessandro was aboard the Aragón . On the deck he could see the Citidal in Sicily. Alessandro wanted to see Lord General Horatio Haliburton the leader of these area. The Aragón made it's way past to the HMS Neptune and to the dock. Alessandro got off the ship and onto the dock.

The Aragón had been spotted incomming and Lord General Haliburton was notifyed by a dragoon officer,

"My lord, a Canadstein vessel bearing the name Aragón has docked..there is a repersenitive who wishes to parlay..."

Haliburton stood up from his chair, he had been reveiwing chats of the area and reveiwing his forces at hand,

"Have company of regulars escort them into the citidal, the diplomat shall be brought to my quarters..."

The dragoon captian bowed then left the room shutting the door behind him. Lord Haliburton walked over to a mirror and adjusted his uniform, he placed his sword in it's sheath then pulled down on the bottom of his red coat.

A company of the kings regulars were dispatched to the docks, they marched at a steady pace while an officer on horseback rode slowly beside them..

Alessandro fixed his tricorner hat and blue coat, then he saw the officer come down on the horse. "I'm from the Canadstein Government. I wish to talk to Lord General Horatio Haliburton. My men will stay behind. I will come by myself." The men aboard the Aragón were on deck. Their uniforms were clean and crisp. They were all in formation and the Captain was in front of his men. If the Ostian tried anything. They were rush back to their fort back on Sardinia.

The mounted officer called out an order,

"Company.....HALT!" The redcoats came to a halt...

He saluted the captian then barked another order,

"To the left! MARCH!" The troops turned left and marched to the left side

"Company! Halt! Company face right!" the troops turned facing back to their officer...

"Company! Present ARMS!"

The officer dismounted and approached, he saluted once more...

"I am Leiutennet William Hess, Lord General Haliburton has requested your presence at the citidal sir...welcome to Ostia.."

Alessandro gave a salute back. "Oh sorry I'm Captain Alessandro Malaspina. Yes I'm glad to be in Ostia."

The men on the ship had looked exactly like the company that just marched out. The rest of his men gave a salute to Leiutennet William Hess. Alessandro's men faced the Ostians. They stared right at them.

We, the peoples of Gorel, would like to formally open diplomatic relations with Ostia, having allies on this continent is important and we would like to have many allies.

Lt. William Hess barked out an order,

"Face right!" the troops turned...

He continued after a short pause..

"Company fowaaaard MARCH!" the troops reponded by going fowards...

Lt. Hess spoke to a soldier who brought a black horse foward,

"If you will sir..." he motioned towards the horse...

Reply to message from Kaiser Schmiel of Gorel:

The king accepts your offer and has asked that a member of your goverment come fourth to Ostia so that diplomatic relations may be established...

Alessandro saw the black horse. He got on it and faced his men. "I want all of you to return to the ship. Thank Lt. Hess for the horse, but now we must go to see Lord General Haliburton." Alessandro held the reins and moved right along side Lt. Hess. The men started to go back onto the ship to wait. Once on the ship they still had their muskets just incase.

Lt.Hess smiled and lowered his head when thanked for the horse. The two cantered up to the marching infantry heading towards the mighty citidal, A long coloum of Dragoons rode by stiring up alot of dust,

"Those were the queens Dragoons, their Lt.Col is a very young and ambitious man..his names Jeffery Tavington..."

The last of the coloum proceeded by,

"He is a favorite of Lord General Haliburton..."

We will send an ambassador with his guards, I hope that the guardsmen will not be a trouble for we fear having to send soldiers across the Danube with no protection.

His majesty would not expect you to venture to Ostia without armed guards protecting your diplomat sir.

Please proceed as his Majesty awaits your arrival.

Alessandro commented about the Queen's Dragoon. "They seem to have everything down, but have they fought in real combat. The group with me just came back from Morocco. Best regiment I have ever fought with."

Lt.Hess replyed,

"He is a graduate of the military school, Tavington passed at the top of his class...there was no graduating officer more qualifyed to lead men bearing the queens name"

He continued...

"He is fresh...but the majority of the men he leads are veterans, i myself have been engauged in many naval battles commanding marines against pirates and natives in the america's..i have seen the men he leads fight, very respectable unit he has been given.. Lord Haliburton faught alongside his father in the indian wars.."

(OOC: *skips ahead a little* )

The Gorel Diplomat arrived with 20 Royal Guards (OOC: see factbook) they rode on Steppe Horses and had a formal look about them, they moved slowly to the gates of the nearest border town and dismounted walking the rest of the way.

"Do you think it's right for a new Lt. Col to lead vetrans into battle. He has no battle experince. So this Tavington has his rank because of his class?" Alessandro replied.

OOC: The nearest border town is called Selena, it's a small very religious village...

The Town of Selena was un-garrisoned and was inhabited only by civilians, there was a Militia in place which had a total of 40 men,

"Welcome to Selena, where are you bound sirs?"

Lt.Hess smiled,

"I have been in the kings army for 15 years, my opinion's on higher ranking officers does not matter sir..but off the record..Tavington's class helped i would imagine but he has skills of a natural born leader..he promised Lord General Haliburton he would advance himself..only..through victory.."

He paused..

"As for leading veterans..i think a veteran should lead other veterans, it is a trust us military men gain over time...he will learn.."

The infantry passed through the gates into the Citidal, Hess and the Diplomat followed. The parade grounds were covered with red coated regulars, Tavingtons dragoons were gathered at the far end while he made his way into the headquarters building...

"Wir gehts die Kapitol." The ambassador blurted out before correcting himself "Mein apologies, it is difficult to remember which languages to speak, we are here to see the King, where is the Kapitol?"

The militia member replyed,

"Our capital city of Apollo a is three days ride from here sir, you will come to a fork in the road about 10 miles from here...go to the left and stay on that course.."

Women and childern looked at the visitors curiously while others continued to go about their daily buisness. The town was quiet and no miltary presence was noted, the rifles the men held were those of the kings army that had been supplied,

"Welcome to our nation...enjoy your stay sir.."

"But what if he makes a wrong decision and gets all of his men wiped out." Alessandro took notice of the men stationed here. It seemed that this certain Tavington's men were stationed here. "Maybe after the meeting I can meet this Tavington."

"Danke" The ambassador bowed and turned to the blank expression on the guardsmen "Wir abfahrt!" He shouted and the men immediatly began to march out of the town and towards the horses, they followed close behind the Diplomat who led them through the directions given to him.

The people of Selena watched the coloum of visitors leave the town. The people of thsi border town were not used to important visitors.

Lt.Hess replyed to Alessandro's question,

"Well..all officers make mistakes sir, and they learn from them to my knowlage"

He continued...

"Im sure Lt.Col Tavington would be pleased to meet you, he likes to socialy advance himself..."

The Older Lt grinned at his comment,

"He will make a fine Lt.Col if you ask me..has the same additude as the rest of them. Tavington's unit has been here sence the fort had been close to completion, i imagine over time they will be dispatched to the field...Lord Haliburton probally wants to get him some combat experiance..even if he did make the wrong decision, others in the unit have alot of knowlage, correcting his mistakes..."

"You seem like a fine man Lt.Hess. I will put in a word for Lord Haliburton to promote you. To me it seems to me that you would have more a rank then Lt." Alessandro replied.

In the city of Apollo the Kirisuban Ambassador Shimura Takeshi and his female intrepreter Lady Fujiwara Reiko were working in the Kirisuban embassy. after all the old alliance of 1450 had continued.

it felt odd wearing western clothes but they seemed to suit Reiko better than the ambassador. He had some knowledge of latin but it was always better to have a good interpreter around.

Lt.Hess was in his late 40's, he stood about 6 feet tall with blue eyes and white hair in a neat pony tail under his hat, he looked like a strong confident infantry commander who had seen alot in his day,

He grinned,

"Thank you very much sir! you seem to be a fine man yourself"

He continued after a short pause,

"Lord Haliburton is a fair man, a great man whom i have had the honor to serve with on the field...i knew him before his commission..but when those who are bound for greatness climb the ladder they often forget of their past friendships.."

They rode up to the command building where Lt.Col Tavingtons horse was,

"I will take you up stairs.." He Lt. dismounted and staitened out his uniform..

He awaited the diplomat to do the same then signaled him towards the white stairs in the left corner of the building..

OOC: The fort i use as you can see on the first page is in my real home town, it's quite interesting to visit...

Alessandro got off his horse and walked to the left corner. Then started to go up the stairs. "Lt. Hess, let's go."

Post Captain Aelian Halmir gazed at the rising landmass to the east. It had been a long voyage, first across the sea from Caladonn, with stops at Verdear and Gibraltica, and now finally the arrival in Ostia. Trade had prospered in the centuries since the nations were allied in the Spizanian War, but now the world was changing again, and perhaps the old comrades-in-arms could be reacquainted.

The ICS Fardinar sailed forward with her two-frigate escort, the seventy-four cannon pushed out from behind their gunports to begin the salute. The guns roared away in the still morning air as the ships neared land, waiting for an Ostian vessel to welcome them.

OOC: I asume your comming in on Sicily?

"It's a Caladonnian vessel! raise the correct signal flag and have the sloop 'Royal Sovereign' intercept them! i want all 120 guns aboard the 'Neptune' to be seen!"

A young Sergent that stood with the Major took off running into the signal post, the flag was raised signaling the vessel to continue it's entry. The sloop 'Royal Sovereign' was dispatched to intercept the 'ICS Fardinar'.

The 'Royal Sovereign' was a beautiful vessel and the fastest sloop the Ostian navy had, it cut through waves at full sail towards the allied vessel. The guns aboard 'Neptune' fired in reply to the allied vessel out of respect.

The guns roared like thunder and a large cloud of smoke filled the air, Major Macdonald grinned at the power of the mighty ship,

"Ahaha, wonderful..wonderful!" he said grinning...

Alessandro got off his horse and walked to the left corner. Then started to go up the stairs. "Lt. Hess, let's go."

Lt.Hess lead Alessandro up the stairs to the very top floor where a large oak door stood, he knocked three times...

From behind the doors came the words...

"Enter.."

The two entered the room to see Lt.Col Tavington and Lord General Haliburton standing to the far side of the room looking out the windows,

"Ahh! that cannon fire was 'Neptune'!...also a large Caladonnian vessel enters my harbour.."

The smile quickly dissapeared off the Lord Generals Face,

"Umm Hmmm.." he cleared his throat..

Lt.Col Tavington lowered his head keeping his eyes trained on the diplomat.

Captain Halmir judged the power of the enemy ship. The Fardinar was outclassed in gunnery, to be sure, but Halmir did not doubt the superior seamanship and gunnery of the Caladonnians would even the odds. Still, he would not seek out the Ostian Neptune for single combat any day.

The Fardinar turned broadside to the Ostian sloop, but ran in her guns to show this was a peaceful mission. Still, the gunports were left open... just in case.

Halmir got out his speaking trumpet, and waited for the Ostian vessel to sail within range.

Alessandro saw the smile dissappear on Lord General Haliburton face. He turned and faced Lt.Col Tavington. Whispering toward Lt. Hess he asked. "What's happening?"

"Ahh welcome to the Citidal, I am commanding officer Lord General Haliburton..and this here is my commanding dragoon officer Lt.Col Tavington of the 16th queens light dragoons..and you sir"

The Royal Guard climbed off the Horseback and surrounded the Diplomat up the walls of the Capitol, they marched in order to the gate and called out to see the King.

"Captain Alessandro Malaspina. I have come from the Canadstein government to talke with you." Alessandro saluted Lt. Col Tavington and Lord General Haliburton.

Lord General Haliburton returned the salute then looked at Tavington,

"Col. we will speak later...you are dismissed.."

Lt.Col Tavington saluted then walked to the door,

"Nice meeting you Captain Malaspina, may our paths cross again..." He smiled..

When Tavington left the room, Hess was also dismissed by Lord Haliburton who then addressed Captain Alessandro Malaspina,

"Now that my officers have left the room our formal way can also be dismissed.." He grinned

"What buisness have you brought fourth from Canadstein, and how was the voyage?"

The gate was opened to the royal chateau, A redcoat with a large axe came foward followed by another shortly after,

"Welcome to Ostia, who shall i announce wishes an audiance with his royal highness?"

"Yes may our pass cross again one day." Alessandro commented. He saluted Tavington.

"Well the voyage was fine from Morocco. I have come to set up a alliance and a trading charter with Ostia. With the alliance we would help each other during war." Alessandro answered.

"I am Ambassador Willhelm of Gorel, I am here from Kaiser Schmiel in order to open relations with Ostia." Willhelm paused and bowed, the Royal Guards saluted and stood in rank.

"Yes may our pass cross again one day." Alessandro commented. He saluted Tavington.

"War is common these days, ambitious leaders comming foward wishing to advance themselves in the world...a mutual protection seems to be in order when these occasions arise yes?"

"I am Ambassador Willhelm of Gorel, I am here from Kaiser Schmiel in order to open relations with Ostia." Willhelm paused and bowed, the Royal Guards saluted and stood in rank.

The Ostian gate sentrys straightened up and returned the salute, the palace loomed in the back ground. A large coloum of redcoated regulars marched through the courtyard in changing of the guard ceromony,

"His Majesty will be informed of your presence, in the meantime you have been granted entry..."

He first guard who seemed to outrank the second signaled him to relay the message up the ladder of command,

"Please..come in, this will only take afew moments..."

The Guardsmen followed the diplomat inside the gate and waited for the instruction from the Diplomat.

A small group of redcoated officers made their way across the courtyard, in front was a chubby Colonial who stopped infront of the diplomat from Gorel,

They saluted...

"Welcome to Ostia, If you would please follow me..."

The group made it's way towards the palace doors where they entered a large very well furnished lobby, the floors made of white marbel red silk banners with gold trim linned the balconys, paintings of Ostian generals and emperors decorated the walls,

"The king himself awaits a parlay with you sir, it's rather interesting that you have gained an audiance with his majesty so quickly...usually he makes distinguished members of goverment such as yourself wait awhile.."

The Diplomat walked out from the Guardsmen who stood in line taking in the sights and sounds of Ostia, they could take a lot from this trip and so where registering every detail as the Diplomat walked over to the colonel, "if you wouldn't mind I would like to leave my guards out here."

"Ahh yes, i would like to establish trade relations aswell as an alliance on behalf of Ostia with your great nation.."

"War is common these days, ambitious leaders comming foward wishing to advance themselves in the world...a mutual protection seems to be in order when these occasions arise yes?"

"Yes it fits what I was going to say perfect." Alessandro commented.

Lord General Haliburton grinned for once, his serious look dissapeared,

"Ahh wonderful Captain Malaspina, as civilized gentleman, officers..we have came to our first agreement..."

Haliburton strolled to the window looking outside into the parade grounds,

"What do you think of what you have seen Captian?..."

Alessandro followed Haliburton and looked threw the window.

"Your men have been trained well. Everything looks excellent, but I wish I could see them in combat. Thats why I'm wondering if I could take Lt. Hess back with me to Morocco. He seems like a fine soldier."

Lord General Haliburton thought for a moment then replyed,

"I don't see why not, Lt. Hess is a very fine officer and gentleman...he deserves the time away from Ostia and matters of a military nature"

He paused..

"But..yes..Lt.Hess may return to Morocco with you, i give him permission as an officer in the kings army"

The clock struck noon and a artillary crew formed up around their cannon, orders being yelled echoed through the air,

"Well i am not usually one to complain..but i do not get along with some of the new higher ranking officers..mostly dragoons...they do as they please and no one tells them different.."

"Yes, among us older officers we go on a first name basis but it is unheard of around others..."

Lt.Col Tavington stood in the doorway of the stables then two dragoon officers joined him,

"Lord General Haliburton has given you a new posting Lt., congradulations..one must preform his dutys to the best of his ability while in anothers nation..presentation Hess..remember that.."

"Thank you Colonial, i will be sure to follow your instruction.."

The Dragoons smirked and turned to leave then Tavington stopped turning around,

The Diplomat walked out from the Guardsmen who stood in line taking in the sights and sounds of Ostia, they could take a lot from this trip and so where registering every detail as the Diplomat walked over to the colonel, "if you wouldn't mind I would like to leave my guards out here."

They stopped in a hallway and the Colonel looked at the diplomat,

"Right through there is the kings court, i will announce you..how shall i go about it? your titles...name..rank..?"

"Very well sir, let us continue..."

The chubby Colonel turned the corner and spoke with a loud voice that ehcoed through out the room,

"Your Royal Highness King Angelo DelaCosta i present Count Willhelm Falkon the third of Gorel wishing to meet with his majesty!"

The Colonel lowered his head and stepped to the side allowing the count to pass by him....

The king sat on a golden throne at the very end of the large room, it was decorated in white marbel with imperial flags drapped on the walls, beside the king sat his queen..

The king motioned fowards, he sat there with a very serious look upon his face, in each of the four corners of the room a red coated guard stood holding a large axe that rested on his shoulder, when the diplomat moved foward the guards came to attention...

Willhelm passed by the Colonel and bowed right to the floor, he lifted himself and looked at the King, he got together a friendly face and waited for permission to speak.

They strolled back into the parade grounds to see Tavington and his coloum thunder out of the gates at a fast speed leaving the dust behind them, Lord General Haliburton stood in front of the command building watching the cavelry leave with a pleased expression across his face, he spoke with a Major and another Colonel obviously about the troops who had just left.

"Well I meet you later." Captian Malaspina walked off toward the dock. Once getting there he boarded the ship.

"Men we are getting a new officer from Ostia. His name is Albert Hess."

King Angelo Delacosta I seemed to be interested in the new topic, he stared into the diplomats eyes,

"What is it you require noble count Willhelm Falkon?..my ears are yours..."

"Well..to Morocco i go and out of this gloomy damp fortress..."

He stuffed two pistols into his soldiers pack, took a musket that was leaning on the wall then headed out the door...

The king sat back in his throne bringing his hand to his chin he sat there quietly pondering the request,

He continued to think the matter over, his eyes shifted to the fat colonel who lowered his own,

The man quickly spoke up,

"Your majesty..these menacing savages can be defeated in a short period of time i am sure of it..."

He colonel then looked to the diplomat, King Angelo Delacosta remobed his hand from his chin then stood up,

"Inform your Kaiser he shall have his assistance from Ostia, We offer full military support in this endevor.."

"Thank you, I ask of my leave for I must tell Mein Kaiser of this immediatly!" Willhelm bowed and stepped back slightly.

The king sat back down,

"Very well Count, may you have safe passage to your homeland...I will refer you to Lord General Haliburton..my finest officer"

The fat colonal took a step back after bowing aswell, he then signaled the diplomat to follow his lead. When they were back in the hallway he said,

"The king seems to understand your request, he granted it with minimal hesitation..."

"Well...he usually makes up his mind when he thinks the time is right, but this seemed to catch his attention..i figure he wants new troops to become aware of how battle works, give them experiance for when they face other nations i would imagine"

"Or it could just be he wishes to establish a good relationship with your nation sir?"

"I hope it's both, the Gorel could use some good allies about now." The Gorel soldiers had flanked either side of the Diplomat and stood by him as he said his farewells to the Colonel, "Guten Abend Mein Fruende!" The Diplomat did his casualt half bow and walked off with his bodyguard.

The Colonel saluted him and escorted them to the gates, the two sentrys presented arms as they group left,

"Safe journeys sir, may we meet again..."

The colonel watched the diplomat leave surrounded by his guards, he turned around then headed back towards the palace.

The king had sent dispatches to all commanding officers around Ostia. He had plans for the invasion of Kronado, his majestys soldiers were mobilizing all over the country.

It was yet to be determined who would command this operation, Lord General Haliburton and Lord General Windsor were first in line sence they were the kings finest officers. Admiral Jeffery Godley had received the message on board the 'HMS Neptune' he would lead all naval operations.

A conscription was also put into effect, the army expected another 50,000 recruits to be drafted.

King Angelo DelaCosta I, has sent out a request that his supporting allies gather at the citidal on Sicily to discuss plans, his majesty will not be attending but Lord General Haiburton has been placed in charge of all Ostian land forces, Admiral Jeffery Godley has been placed in charge of Ostian naval forces commited to this operation...
