To: Baro Faro
From: el Prezidente de Crakkaland

Baro Faro, first I would like to congradulate you on your recent achievements in uniting your nation under a truly representative government. Your feats in military defense set the new Horde of Doom apart as a force to be respected and reckoned with.
I would like to assure you that the the proud, independent nation of Crakkaland looks forward to a universally prosperous political and economic relationship. Our newly initiated defense network, "el Homeland Defense," will certainly ensure a lasting peace between our two great nations. On that note, I would like to go ahead and propose unnofficilaly an alliance: if any should threaten the sovereignty of either of our nations, the other shall commit resources in aid to the threatened nation. My proud people and I will honor such a pact to the end.
I wish you and all the Hordians luck in continuing to build a stable and proud society.

OOC: Dammit! I meant to add a special clause to one of the Counties, disallowing them to return to their county. Its spelled "Swizerlund"
And yes...it was a bitch to write.

IC:
To: El Presidente of Crakkaland
We accept this agreement, and will enjoy the wine! We hope for "El Homeland Defense's" success and hope our two independent peoples can remain as close as possible.

The Empire of Isie frowns upon the liberties given the common people of your nation. A state cannot be sovereign without the security of an ordered caste, with a strong, idealistic idol as Ruler.

Tell me, are those people captured in battle by your forces given such liberties?

Indeed they are. A soldier is a soldier, and his death is neccesary in a war. But as soon as he surrenders, as soon as he drops his weapon, he becomes a dependent, much like a person on welfare.

He will be given good treatment, warm meals, and his health will be attended too. Psychologically he beings to view our force as "the good guys" and may even drive others to desert.

To your discussions of a need of a higher class I say this: Castes and classes are the downfall of man. I submit to you the benefits of direct democracy:

---Nonrepresentative. Individuals elected to office in a representative democracy tend not to be demographically representative of their constituency. They tend to be wealthier, more educated, more male, and closer to the majority race, ethnic group and religion than a random sample would produce. They also tend to be concentrated in certain professions, such as lawyers. Elections by district may reduce, but not eliminate, those tendencies, in a segregated society. Direct democracy would be inherently representative, assuming universal suffrage (where everyone can vote).
---Conflict of interest. The interests of elected representatives do not necessarily correspond with those of their constituents. An example is that representatives often get to vote to determine their own salaries. It is in their interest that the salaries be high, while arguably it's in the electorate's interest that their salaries be "representative", that is, average for the district they represent. The typical results of representative democracy are that their salaries are much higher than this average, however.
---Corruption. The concentration of power intrinsic to representative government is seen by some as tending to create corruption. In direct democracy, the possibility for corruption is reduced.
---Political parties. The formation of political parties is considered by some to be a "necessary evil" of representative democracy, where combined resources are often needed to get candidates elected. However, such parties mean that individual representatives must compromise their own values and those of the electorate, in order to fall in line with the party platform. At times, only a minor compromise is needed. At other times such a large compromise is demanded that a representative will resign or switch parties.
---Government transition. The change from one ruling party to another, or to a lesser extent from one representative to another, may cause a substantial governmental disruption and change of laws. For example, US Secretary of State (then National Security Advisor) Condoleezza Rice cited the transition from the previous Clinton Administration as a principal reason why the United States was unable to prevent the September 11, 2001 attacks. The Bush Administration had taken office nearly 8 months prior to the attacks.
---Cost of elections. Many resources are spent on elections which could be applied elsewhere. Furthermore, the need to raise campaign contributions is felt to seriously damage the neutrality of representatives, who are beholden to major contributors, and reward them, at the very least, by granting access to government officials.
---Patronage and nepotism. Elected individuals frequently appoint people to high positions based on their mutual loyalty, as opposed to their competence. For example, Michael D. Brown was appointed to head the US Federal Emergency Management Agency, despite a lack of experience. His subsequent poor performance following Hurricane Katrina may have greatly increased the number of deaths. In a direct democracy where everybody voted for agency heads, it wouldn't be likely for them to be elected solely based on their relationship with the voters.
---Transparency. Direct democracy, where people vote directly for issues concerning them, would result in greater political transparency than representative democracy. In the United States, for example, the energy policy was developed in secret, by Vice President Dick Cheney and various oil company executives. Such secrecy could not exist in a direct democracy.

Though I use references from the United States, surely even you must see the benefits.

Nonrepresentative: A democracy follows the twisted view of the human race as equals. This is simply not true; some people are smarter, stronger, more brave, and wiser than others. Neither type of democracy allows for these facts with their consideration of all parties present, regardless of their importance.
Conflict of Interest: There is no conflict of interest in the Empire of Isie. All things are done in the interest of the Security, Expansion, Advancement, International Image and Prosperity of the Isian Empire. Those who have no loyalty to their Empire are traitors. Traitors cannot be reasonably tolerated without compromising the welfare of the nation.
Corruption: There can be no corruption of the Royalty and Nobility of Isie, for loyalties can lie nowhere but to the Waning Mistress of the Night. Her word is carried by Ormar, King of Isie, may He live forever in Her Graces.
Political Parties: Those who turn from Ormar, Speaker for the Mistress to other beliefs are Traitors.
Government Transition: Ormar rules until death, and his rightful claimant Son of house A shall take the thrown and pass on the word of the Mistress.
Cost of Elections: No Elections, No Cost.
Patronage and Nepotism: Those who hold their Titles as Archlords or Below Nobility have earned their position through proven competence and wisdom.
Transparency: The word of Ormar is the word of the Mistress, and her interest is always the success of Her People. All Her decrees shall be carried out without question, to better our Prosperity.

Prisoners of war are taken as O'kai. They are made indentured servants, and will remain in such position for the remainder of their lives. O'kai is not cruelty; never has an O'kai attempted to escape service, and any O'kai you speak to can only be found to be genuinely pleased in their service of Isie beneath the Mistress.

If you truly believe in such a system, may God have mercy on your souls.
and her interest is always the success of Her People
This, my friend, is tyranny. Why is her opinion above others? Why is she so special?

All men may not be equal, but under the law they should be. If you are right handed, does it make your right arm better then your left?

The God you speak of for mercy is The Waning Mistress of the Night. Her mercy for her people is always balanced. A God cannot be accused of tyranny. Do not speak so of the Mistress.
