The US has a permanent base at McMurdo Sound in the Antaractica and has bases at the South Pole (Scott / Amundson Base) and Palmer Pennisula (Palmer Station) on that continent.

The US claims a 200 mile economic zone around all of its coastlines (including its islands in the Pacific).

Political

Alliances:
Pan American Treaty (all nations in Western Hemisphere plus Britian, Netherlands) commercial, military and political treaty (the oldest alliance US is involved in, dating back to 1905)
Oceanic Alliance -- US, Canada, Mexico, FNS, Australasia, UK, (major nations that border or own territories in the Pacific) commercial, military and political treaty. (replaces the defunct London Treaty Alliance that essentially become the UN during the Third Great War)
Bilateral Treaties with Liberia, Belgian Congo, Russia, Iceland, Canada

Member nation of United Nations, with permanent seat on UN Security Council.

Alliance Space Program
Current Space Assets:
Manned Orbital Lab (Yankee Station) orbiting Northern Hemisphere along 35th Parellel
Manned Orbital Lab (Dixie Station) orbiting Southern Hemisphere along 35th Parellel
X20 and X15C orbiters, Titan II launch vehicles with Gemini supply craft. Improved Commucations satellites, improved Spy satellites, early warning and science satellites. (real time capability). Unmanned space capability to Luna, Mars and Venus (landers and orbiters)

Late development stage: Very heavy rockets (Saturn VB), Apollo Program (manned lunar missions)

US has 2nd Generation liquid fuel ICBMs, 3rd Generation solid rocket ICBMs, IRBMs, MIRV technology

Advancement to tech level 8 (subject to change)

1. Level 3+ social spending for at least 20 years
2. Has reached 75% of maximum economic productivity for at least 5 years
3. Has placed a man in orbit either by itself or in conjuction with 2 other nations.
4. Has the ability to build nuclear power plants.
5. Has an airline and tourist industry.
6. Spent 5 points a year for 10 years on building an electronics industry (year 6)

US Budget 1964 in progress
Population 208 million tech level 7.5
Production centers 412 (maximum potential 416) (88 production centers are EMP hardened with ultimate goal of having 50% all US industry spread in the top 100 urban areas having at least 2 hardened industrial centers)

Energy Resources
Oil 16, Coal 18, Nuclear 16, Natural Gas 20, Hydroelectric 5, Ethanol 1

The US has sufficient natural gas, nuclear and hydroelectric power to fuel 1400 production centers (currently using 16 nuclear, 5 hydroelectric, 5 Coal, 20 natural gas for domestic production).

Commerce and Tourism require 2 oil points and 1 ethanol point (for 75 total commercial and tourism points)
Leaving 14 oil points available to fuel 350 military points (remaining military points are forces that don’t require oil such as ballistic missile units and nuclear powered warships)

Beginning 1960 Alaskan oil will provide enough cushion to replace diminishing oil production in the 48 states until 1970, when production fall further. The US reached its peak oil production in 1955 historically.

Pollution index(beginning 1960)
No population penalty, -2 for having over 800 production points, and no penalty for coal or hydroelectric as below the threshold. Pollution control measures reduce pollution penalty to -1.

Trading Partners: Canada 4, Mexico 4, UK 3, Japan 3, Russia 3, Central America, Caribbean and Iceland 3, FNS 4, China 3, Africa 3, East Asia 3, Europe 4, USAE 1, Australasia 2

1958 The Kennedy Administration orders a complete examination of the US military establishment and future missions.

Air mobility is seen as increasingly important, as are special operations forces. But the ability of the US to fight and win a global war is also critical. Nuclear Deterence is also critical.

Balancing these seperate problems is seen as necessary for the future.

Meanwhile, President Kennedy and the First Lady visit Sydney, Canberra, and Darwin before flying to Manila. Along the way visits are made to the future states of Hawaii and Polynesia. After Manila, the President and his wife visit Guam before flying to the future state of Alaska.

The Egyptian ambassador would like to approach the Kennedy administration on whether they would like to set up a base within the Western Desert or Negev Desert. We realize that the US may have logistical issues for peacekeeping missions in the Middle East and, if the Turkish Alliance-Arab League rivalry finally ignites into war, peacekeeping forces will need a safe and . After the colonialism issue dies down, the UR is going to actually become the peacekeepers they are suppose to be and in our area, we're going to need all the help we can get.

OOC:
US-Egyptian relations seem really strained in E20. I understand that Egypt hates imperialism and the US hates socialism, but I think the US would be a lot more interested in Egypt because of it's geostrategic location in the Middle East and it's just a giant desert away from the US's main E20 rival, China.

You don't think the tremendous German presence in the area is enough?

The Kennedy Administration expresses interest, and has the US Ambassador to Egypt enter into serious talks. The main US concern is that the presence of US troops (or British troops for that matter) would increase tensions, not lower them. On the other hand, US, British, South African, Egyptian, Moroccan, and Algerian troops all fought side by side during the Third Great War and liberated Syria from MEU rule. They also fought Union (including German troops) together.

Kennedy requests a visit to Egypt soon.

When asked if this statement was aimed at anyone in particular, State Department spokesman and White House spokesman clarify that it isn't aimed at anyone in particular, but a restatement of US policy on this matter. As one of the nations attacked by nuclear and biological weapons during the Third Great War, the US views nuclear aggression as a direct threat to its own national survival.

The US is willing to do that, it simply wants a long term lease for use of the airbases it constructed there. Walter Dornberger writes another letter to his long-time friend Werner von Braun; their correspondance has been on a regular weekly basis.

The letter contains the usual attempts to bring Werner back to Germany to work for the "better" ESA, as well as questions about the family and typical reminiscing about the old days.

However, the next paragraph entails a question about the possibility of the ESA and ASF working together instead of trying to shut each other down. Dornberger says he is interested in working together some, especially on Space Planes and the supposed Moon Missions that are happening.

He bluntly puts it forward that he is tired of the damned Americans always beating him by 1 or two months at most. Germany's MOL went up in Novemember, 2 weeks after the Americans'! And who will the history books remember, he asks? Not the Germans who came from nothing. Hell, he rants, the Chinese will get more recognition even though they are nearly 5 years behind!

He then continues about the possibilities of ESA and ASF doing things, pointing out that if ASF-ESA relations get really good, perhaps that Heinlein will put a German on the first moon mission! Wouldn't that be something...

He signs it and mails it, hoping for the best. He also begins to think of ways to pitch this to the Reichstag. Fortunately the idiot CDU is out. However, the FDP has promised a large tax cut, and with the new Surface Fleet, space plans may be out...

It has been shown that due to the new economic boom the UIP immigration to the USA has been barely a trickle since 1962 (Which is would be with the basically industrial boom that's been created.) you wouldn't remember this, but in the old military thread, the US and UK can build ships twice as fast during National Effort and Wartime because they have been building warships longer then anyone else. That rule hasn't changed, it just hasn't come up in so long that since the war it hasn't been relevent. It represents pumping in extra money for overtime and the fact both of those nations have rather huge shipbuilding capability.

Japan and Germany had a similar advantage until they got out of the warship business after losing the Third Great War

you wouldn't remember this, but in the old military thread, the US and UK can build ships twice as fast during National Effort and Wartime because they have been building warships longer then anyone else.

I am inclined to give that advantage to Japan now as well considering it has been pumping out merchant ships for a while now. Possibly others including Scandic Union and FNS. Further research on that and answer by weekend.

THe UIP wonders if the US wants to have any information on a ton of different requests of the Philippine government to cooperate in certain films about the THird World War on our islands. They seem to be rather numerous due to some strange affiliation to make WWIII stories. Just wondering if you wanted to have any say in this.

(Look at some of the WWII movies during the late 1950's and 1960's, the majority of them were filmed in the Philippines for cost effectiveness and because it's easier to work with the people than the Japanese.)

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Curtis Lemay
Director of Alliance Space Command Admiral Robert A. Heinlein

All civilian air traffic entering or departing the US is grounded except for specific diplomatic flights. All civilian air traffic in the US is ordered grounded.

Reservists are recalled. A bomb destroys NBC Studios in Washington, and a number of civilians are killed. A reporter from the Washington Post and another from the New York Times are found dead in DC.

Efforts by foreign nations to reach the State Department and White House are unsuccessful.

In a stunning event, at noon on January 18, a press release is issued from the White House indicating that President Joseph Kennedy has been removed from office due to mental health reasons, and Senator Strom Thurmond has taken office as President of the United States under the Constitution.

Martial law is declared in the US, and the US military goes to full alert… Defcon 2.

Since things have changed since my last post (made before last GB post):

The USA makes it onto the Foreign and Commonwealth travel advice lists for the first time, with the entire nation being deisgnated as a potentially dangerous area. The Embassy in Washington makes further (probably futile) attempts to contact someone with authority, stranded British citizens seeking to return home are bought tickets on British flagged merchant vessels. Britain maintains DEFCON 3 status but missiles are readied to make a retaliatory attack in case someone does something rash. British nuclear ballistics and attack subs sortie to hold position in the Northern Irish Sea.

Officially Britain states that it is maintaining usual DEFCON status and that no alerts are issued but concern is growing over trouble in the US. Any noticeable MoD movements are explained away as wargames and other exercises.

Events January 12 – 19, 1964

What really happened
In 1963 a cabal of conservative Congressmen and Senators, the Secretary of Defense, a number of corporate leaders and several members of the Joint Chiefs, including the Chairman, decide that Kennedy cannot be trusted to deal with the Chinese when he announces in a cabinet meeting that instead of launching a preemptive strike the US will instead up the ante of the arms race and work on breaking China and the SCT economically.

Kennedy’s statements that after all the Chinese are a democracy and the Chinese people can eventually be trusted to see reason are taken as dangerously naïve by the cabal. The potential that LBJ, who many consider an idiot, is likely to win the 1964 election is viewed as even more reason to act.

On January 12, Congress goes back into session and the Cabal engineers the election of Strom Thurmond as President Pro Tem of the Senate, placing him 3rd in the Presidential succession after the Vice President and Speaker of the House. Elements of the CIA, much of which has been co-opted, are given the task of eliminating the Speaker and the Vice President, while several key Army and Marine units have new commanders loyal to the Cabal placed in charge.

Policy debates continue in Washington for the next 3 days, but its just cover for the Cabal as it prepares to act. On Sunday January 15, Kennedy is at Camp David, enjoying a weekend away from the White House and talking with the Secretary of State regarding options to defuse the situation with China. The Cabal is ready to act and does, as the Marine guards, all loyal to their commander who is loyal to the Cabal, eliminate the Secret Service contingent and those Marines who fail to see their duty. At the same time, assassins kill the Speaker of the House at his home, along with his wife and family, while the Vice President is killed when his aircraft is destroyed over the Gulf of Mexico by a bomb.

Acting in Kennedy’s name, the Secretary of Defense orders the US Military to Defcon 3 and federalizes the Reserves and National Guard and calls them to active duty. Kennedy and the Secretary of State remain in custody for now and in seclusion at Camp David.

By Monday morning key advisors at the White House have discovered the death of the Speaker and Vice President, but are ordered to keep things quiet and given the cover story that it is a plot by the SCT to eliminate American leadership as they are going to launch an invasion of Siberia and the Middle East. Although a thin story, it is plausible enough for the Cabal to buy some time. Meanwhile, Marines from the Marine Barracks in DC are called in to “protect” the White House, while the US Army’s 3rd Infantry Regiment secures the Capitol and the Pentagon.

The Press begins to pick up on what is going on, and the Cabal takes action against several who are on to things. The story is unbelievable however, and because of that, valuable time is lost.

By Tuesday, January 17, the Cabal releases the story regarding the death of the Vice President and the Speaker of the House. The shock of the events prevents initial careful analysis of the cover story, and although many Americans are a bit shocked that Kennedy isn’t the one releasing the story and addressing the nation, the cover story of National Security is enough to buy some more time.

SAC is ordered to full scale readiness to launch an attack against military and leadership targets in the SCT. This does not get out into the media and is initially hidden in the events of the day. However, by Tuesday evening SCT satellites and signals intelligence are picking up very alarming information indicating that the US might very well be about to launch a massive nuclear strike. This takes some time to reach SCT leaders, but by Wednesday morning in Tokyo, Beijing, Hanoi and elsewhere in the SCT, government leaders are aware that something dangerous is happening in the United States.

The British and FNS intelligence agencies begin to pick up on what is going on and alert their governments that Kennedy might not be running things.

On Wednesday, January 18 this becomes obvious. The Press suddenly realizes that the Army and Marines are now obviously guarding the Capitol and the White House and also realizes that they have not been able to reach their reporters at Camp David since Monday morning. Some of the more astute reporters who have pieced together the whole story are then eliminated by rogue elements of the CIA. A series of bomb blasts in Washington eliminates the Treasury Department wing housing he Secret Service, throwing that organization into chaos as the Secret Service staff at the White House are arrested or eliminated by Marines and special CIA operatives. The entire White House press corps is also arrested and sequestered. A press release at noon is handed to the media (through direct means to the various networks and wire services) while another bomb destroys NBC studios just before Chet Huntley is about to break the story of a coup attempt.

The news that President Kennedy has taken ill and been replaced shocks the country, which is already confused by the events of the last few days. The media is in confusion as well as they struggle to figure out what is really going on. Several key corporate officers and newspaper owners are also quietly arrested during the day and sequestered as well.

OOC
Based on the classic Cold War novel “Seven Days in May” which is also available as a movie with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas, and a newer version done by HBO a few years ago.

At this point, few intelligence agencies would know much more than what is reported in the news. The British, Canadians and FNS have a pretty good idea though, and to a lesser extent the SCT and Scandic intelligence agencies know enough to be really, really alarmed now.

F.I.N's first real test comes in their creation. They were sanctioned to begin at the begining of 1964. Now, a ton of young men, just starting to be recruited and not even on the government payroll and forced into service.

Their one advantage is that they are inventive young men with strange ideas that would have been obliterated with sanctioned training. Now the people of the Philippines start to offer to pay the American service men's way. With the chaos in the states, it seems that no one has come to pick up the men who have just started their training, nor has sent any money for food. The Filipino people around Subric bay allow the soldiers to take IOU's for their government to be kept in health.

At this time the new men of the service industry, many wearing their regular street clothes see what the soldiers think is going on. Seperated from their homes, it seems that the information is confused. Many of the trainees don't have a clue as to what's going on.

(I gather that the Cabal would be concerned with Japan and Mainland Asia at this moment and their own stuff. Trainee Marines in a no name little bay in the Philippines would normally pass their attention. Unless you plan to nuke me as well. Which might get you stuck in a civil war with your allies.)

A Kennedy advisor manages to reach a friend outside of Camp David who then contacts Governor Tawles of Maryland, an a solid administration supporter, and the governor then contacts his old friend the commander of the Maryland National Guard, who also commands the 29th Infantry Division (Virginia and Maryland National Guard). General Rawford, although elderly (age 88) is a decorated hero of both the 2nd and 3rd Great Wars, and held in very high esteem throughout the US Army and throughout the National Guard and also importantly by the commander of the Maryland Air National Guard, the key defender of the District of Colombia area.

Very quickly the General begins talking to fellow National Guard commanders around the country, who begin talking to reserve commanders and some of the regulars. Word of what is going on also leaks into many NORAD commands a particularly critical element, as Admiral Heinlein wears that hat in addition to his role as commander of US Space Forces and the Alliance Space Force, and he is not part of the Cabal.

By morning, elements of the 29th Infantry have surrounded Camp David and they launch an assault. In the brief but fierce fight, the company sized Marine detachment is overwhelmed by a brigade of mechanized infantry and President Kennedy is freed.

Meanwhile, at 1500 hours (DC time), NORAD closes down the Washington DC airspace to ALL air traffic, preventing further reinforcement of the brigade of the 82nd Airborne and Rangers already in place, and suddenly the media begins to pick up at last that a civil war is about to break out.

ntelligence information out of the US is drying up as apparently the Americans are focusing very hard on spying and treason. Some agents just flat dissappear.

Remember, that in the RL world, agents are the people your spy services recruit, people like Ed Aames, Walker etc. Your own people who agree to work as spies in exchange for money, or out of idealogical ideas, or because they have some issue that makes them think its ok

So for example, the Scandic Union Chief of Station, the head Scandic Spy, gets reports from his people indicating that thier sources are drying up and some are even dying in 'traffic accidents'

Since the US is under martial law, Kennedy has authorized actions that haven't been taken since the US Civil War. In effect, the writ of habeaus corpus has been suspended in some situations

US army troops at Fort Bliss begin a series of desert training exercises, and US army troops at Fort Hood are shifted to the King Ranch (which is halfway between Corpus Christi and the Mexican border and even bigger then Fort Hood) and begin exercising as well.

Pointed efforts are made to ensure the Mexican government is made aware of this.

Texts of treaties between the US and various Central American nations guaranteeing their independence are published and summeries appear in the Press.

The Press notices the link between this and apparent attempts by Mexico to interfere in Central America

The Mexican Gov't would like to know why its previous request was ignored. It would also like to state that the US's position is hypocritical. How can a US treaty guarantee the sovereignty of another nation? Mexico sees the US as its best friend, and most important ally, and is bemused to see the America is adopting a threatening position after Mexico is invited to join an economic union.

RE:Nuclear Energy

We ask for your assistance in building Mexico's first nuclear reactor. We aim to have a working light water reactor by the year 1966, and we ask for your help in constructing one. The purpose of constructing a nuclear reactor is to provide Mexico with a cleaner source of energy and allow us to free up our own petroleum for uses other than domestic.

March 31, 1964

President Kennedy is addressing a joint session of Congress, with the Supreme Court Justices in attendence concerning the trial and probable conviction of 30 Senators and 50 Representatives on treason charges.

The Press and many Americans have called against the trials as they have not followed due process, as the legislatures were arrested and held without being impeached. Kennedy has cited the example of Lincoln and his actions during the Civil War as precedent, but many Americans are deeply concerned.

The fact that dozens of military officers have also been arrested and are being held, and the fact the the Senate President Pro Tem (Thormund) was arrested, tried by court martial and then shipped to Ireland along with a number of the high ranking conspirators also violated the Constitution.

During all of this, some of the conspirators have managed to escape detection and they still have authority, and more importantly, they have access to nuclear weapons.

As Kennedy and practically the entire government are in Washington, and only the Secretary of Commerce, Luther Hodges is out of town, the conspirators decide to strike. A 1 kiloton missile is smuggled out of an air defense SAM site near Washington and smuggled into the Capitol

As the address is going on, at 7 PM Eastern Time, the missile detonates, and the US goverment and the Capitol building as well as a number of office buildings, the Department of Labor, HEW building, and Supreme Court buildings are levelled or seriously damaged by the blast, as is the Libary of Congress building (although not severely).

Even as the Capitol is being destroyed, a group of armed men attack and kill the Secretary of Commerce and his entire family and the Secret Service detail providing protection at his home in Eden, North Carolina.

In a short few minutes, the United States has lost its entire government. With no other choice, the senior military officer in the chain of command assumes the Presidency as the US is still under martial law and no other options exist.

On March 31, 1964, Admiral Thomas Moorer, a veteran of the Third Great War and an ace with 23 kills during that war, becomes acting President of the United States.

May 1964
The primary elections are in full swing and it becomes clear that both the Democratic and Republican parties are in tatters. Many of their leaders died at the Capitol, and although a new Congress has been selected by governors and will meet soon, the spirit of the country is for radical change. The Holocaust, as most Americans now refer to it, has become in the eyes of millions clearly the responsibility of the people of the United States, for it was Americans who carried out the atrocity and attempted to also seize power. New ideas are circulating, as well as some new heroes such as Admiral Heinlein whose firm stand had denied the coup plotters the ability to reinforce their troops on the fateful week in January. The Seven Days, as the debacle is known now as, is quickly becoming as decisive event in American History as the Civil War, Revolution and Third Great War.

Growing numbers in both parties are calling for a new constitutional convention. On top of this, some states are openly discussing secession and a break away from what they view as a corrupt system that allowed the Holocaust to occur and permanently shamed the United States for all time. A new document that would prevent the Federal Government from trying to act as an imperial power but strong enough to defend the country, a government that returned power to the people and government to local and state authorities.

A Federation instead of Federalism.

Summer comes in North America, and with it, drought. Scientists begin to worry, but the US and Canada grow so much food, and rationing is in effect, so little hunger is experienced.

But the usual huge bumper crops of wheat and so many other crops aren't going to happen this year. In the west, the area that suffered from the Dust Bowl in the 30s sees rainfall at the same low levels as that awful time, and many farms fail. Meanwhile, the Army lets 150,000 regular troops go home, the Air Force does the same, and the Navy looks at sharp cuts.

Meanwhile, both major political parties are sharply divided still, and the only consensus is that a new constitution is needed. The newly appointed Congress to is divided, but passes the bill calling for a new Constitution and appoints a President, Governor Rockerfeller of West Virginia. The only other thing that is agreed on is ending the draft and acceptance of the UN Treaty banning military ballistic missiles.

In Texas, discussion grows of refounding the Republic of Texas. In western Oregon and Washington, and northern California, discussion begins of forming a new country and that discussion expands to Hawaii, Polynesia and Alaska.

By August, as neither major party has been able to get a majority together to get a Presidential candidate, the Governors of Washington, Oregon and Hawaii meet. A meeting occurs in Salem, Oregon occurs with representatives from communities in northern California as well as the other three states and also Alaska and Polynesia meet.

A measure is placed on the ballot in all five states and in the northern counties of California calling for secession and formation of a new nation. Meanwhile, a secession ballot appears on the Texas ballot, and the New England States and counties in New York State, and New York discuss it as well as Pennsylvania.

In September North America changes forever.

Texas votes to secede in a special election, and Governor John Connally becomes President of the 2nd Republic of Texas. Congress, riven by secession setiment itself, doesn't act, and Admiral Moorer and President Rockefeller, unwilling to fight a 2nd Civil War, decide to let the voters decide in November.

They do.

Voters in the states of Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticutt, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont secede and form the nation of New England.

The states of Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, and Polynesia form the nation of Columbia.

Utah declares its independence soon after.

just under 100 year after a war was fought to keep the nation united, the nations finally divides.

In late November and into December, discussions between the states and new nations continue, and finally, an agreement is reached.

The former United States will now consist of the North American Alliance.

In addition to New England, Texas, Utah, and Columbia, other nations form in the former United States.

California joins Columbia, as does Nevada.

New Mexico, Colorado, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Arizona join Texas.

The states of Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Deleware form Dixie.

The states of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming form the Rocky Mountain Republic.

The remaining states, the Midwestern and northern plains states, form the nation of Great Lakes Republic.

To ensure trade continues, a unified defense of North America is maintained, and the Space Program can be continued, the North American Economic Community is formed and NORAD is retained, with all of the new nations signing on.

Mexico sends out diplomatic envoys to the Hispanic Political groups in southern California and New Mexico.

Both Texas and Columbia both quickly learn of Mexican meddling. Texas bluntly announces that a massive celebration of the new nations independence will be held at San Jacinto on April 21, 1966 (130th celebration of Texas beating Mexico and gaining its independence) and immediately announces that no more immigrants from Mexico will be accepted, although guest workers will be. The Alamo becomes a National Monument, as does Goliad.

An effort in California to unionize farm workers is suppressed by the government, and a large number of ringleaders, including Caeser Chavez, are arrested and deported. Round ups are carried out in both states looking for illegal immigrants and when found they are deported en masse.

Mexico is warned by Columbia that Baja would make a fine addition to the new nation. Texas is less blunt, but Mexican observers notice that a sizeable portion of the equipment left by the former US Army is now in Texan hands, and Texas has a history of bellegerence against Mexico.

The US Navy for the most part is divided up between Dixie, New England and Colombia. National Guards, including very powerful Air National Guards, still remain.

West Point and Annapolis are placed under NORAD control as war colleges, while the individual nations become responsible for officer training.

Rumblings in Canada begin. British Colombia looks at the new nation of Columbia, and notices that they have far more in common with it then with the politicians far away in Ottawa.

The former USAF Academy becomes home of the North American Space Force , the only remaining remnants of the old US military.

Secondly, the Caribbean Islands don't have thousands of years of culture. The Spanish and disease wiped out nearly ALL of the Carib Indians who lived there. Everyone living in the Caribbean Islands now are descendents of immigrants (by choice or by force), with only traces of Native Carib blood remaining.

Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and Cuba do have major points in common. They share a common history of Spanish colonization, and in this timeline, they also share a common history of US massive investment and assistance that stabilized them early on in the century and they have had a much more peaceful and prosperous 20th Century then the real Caribbean islands had.

Ahem. Excuse me, but are you Puerto Rican? If so, then I will debate you equally in responce to this and how I disagree. If not, then I would recommend you listen to a person who is Puerto Rican and was raised in the culture their entire lives. Cause personally if you aren't Puerto Rican, I think a man whose mother came to this country not even speaking English might know a little more about the Caribean culture than you.

Here is my disagreement with you. FIrst off, just because the Indian populations got wiped out on the islands, does not mean their culture died. They did have children, and they passed that culture onward. A blending of cultures that was ancient and the newer spanish and black cultures melded into a larger one. So the ancient cultures and superstitions went into the Catholic mythology (Meaning sacred stories for anyone who thinks Myth means not true) and became a melding. That's why a ROman Catholic and a Puerto Rican Catholic do not believe in exactly the same things. I have Carib blood in me, and stories of my ancestors who resisted the COnquistadors still get propogated in my family. Why do you think that Spanish and Hispanic are two different races? Spanish are considered white. Hispanic are not. Therefore the culture is a blended one, but still remains distinct beyond SPain or the US. And US help can not change that. Because to put it bluntly, anti-Catholic sentiment in the United States always allows for it's Spanish speaking territories to be defunct. Also a reason why Puerto Rico hasn't become a state yet. It's culturally too different. And believe me if the US in this timeline sent large numbers of immigrants to the US, then you would have had a rebellion. That's fact.

Now for the common? Today the Cubans have a common history with the other islands. They have less help and are less stable. Ok, so stability means love and togetherness? Let me ask you. THe United States has been stable for 140 years. Do Southerners love their Northern brethern any more? Well if you are a Northerner you might think that, but believe me it's all a delusion. Yankees are still detested in the south as much as they have ever been. Believe me I live there now and we don't like them. (Raised in Puerto Rican household in the south. Weird combination) So that's my disagreement, and if you disagree with it, well then you just prove a simple point to me. Thank you and goodnight.

To point out a flaw in your logic:

The south does not actively campaign for seperation form each other and we actually get along fairly well. There's no reason for the Carriebean to not want to form a more powerful economic and military bloc.

And more to the point, GB is the mod. Stop arguing.

I can see them working closely on military, economic and other matters, but as a Dominican(With a good view on Puerto Rico as my mom was born in Santo Domingo but at 14 moved to Puerto Rico and grew up there all the way thru Med school when she came to the states) I can not see them joining together as a country.

But the south also lost two wars with the stronger North. The Civil Rights movement is the second as it can be considered a second war. (With the amount of riots and military forces sent here it might as well.) And also it's not given a choice. The Caribean has a choice to unite or not. And they also have sea seperating them. ANd thank you Safehaven. So culturally you have two people who have lived the culture disagreeing with you on a united nation.

So the mod is god no matter how wrong he may be?

If the majority believes him to be in the wrong, he can be overridden. Besides, GB is only one of the mods (also the most prominent). Sharina is Supreme Mod. Malkyer/LesserRibena are also mods, but are currently away.

However, one person complaining doesn't hack it unless the mod in question is blatantly wrong/incredibly unrealistic.

If you read carefully you would have noticed the Spanish Caribbean was considering options and hadn't picked any yet. A Spanish Caribbean Federation or Confederacy is what I was giving them as an option, not unification, and it was only one of four choices.

Third
I am a Southerner, and I have no idea what you are talking about. I lived through the Civil Rights Era, in the South. We never thought we were fighting Civil War Round Two.

Fourth
You have bitched about every decision and move I have made since you joined this game. Personally, I wouldn't miss you if you left. So play and stop bitching. Other people besides you are waiting for this war to end, and they too are impatient and I am forcing things along as fast as feasable to get to a reasonably satisfying game situation where the US is not a superpower since we can't find anyone willing to play it except me, and I have too many other things I have to do in this game already.

Are the northern Canadian islands free?

They are part of the Northwest Territory in reality. Figure the eastern ones would be handed over to Newfoundland to administer, while the rest are in the Republic of Huron. In reality, they belong to the polar bears and Inuit.

Nunavit, the Eskimo (Inuit is correct) autonomous zone that Canada has in RL is a late development and will show up eventually as part of the Republic of Huron.

nice map and after thinking about, the northern islands will remain with Huron simply because Churchill on Hudson Bay is their chief link to the outside world during the summer and during the winter, well they are pretty isolated.

Biggest nations in the world by territory at this point are Russia, FNS, China, Columbia, Huron, Australasia in no particular order.

If you consider that amount of distance involved, as Columbia and Australasia control numerous island groups in the Pacific, they stretch across nearly half the earth (the Pacific is REALLY big). In just continous territory, then Russia is number one in size although the FNS is pretty close (ooc could be larger, haven't actually added up land area)

Colorado Free State, which is also the location of Cheyenne Mountain, which remains the HQ for NORAD and is now the the HQ for the North American Union Space Force (the only unified quasi military service for North America)

Each nation provides interceptors, airborne early warning aircraft, air defense missiles and ABM missiles (once they are built and assuming they are) for defense of North America. All other military forces are handled by the individual republics.

Space craft and space infrastructure is handled by the USF (Union Space Force) and remain at their various locations.

The Hard Years – North America 1964 – 69

In addition to the political turmoil, the effects of the nuclear strikes and the Great Depression brought substantial hardships to the nations that formerly made up the US and Canada. 1964 in particular was a hard year.

1964
US and Canada are on food rationing with normal combined food production of 378 reduced to 191 because of climatic and radiation effects. This is sufficient to feed 382 million people because of food rationing and with emergency gardens, another 38 million can be fed. US and Canada have combined population of 224 million, so the US is able to export food to feed 196 million. Food sufficient to feed 80 million was sent to China, so the remainder, sufficient to feed 60 million is sent to Russia and 56 million to the UK and Ireland.

Severe droughts and unusually harsh winters however devastate agriculture in the California Central Valley and Imperial Valley (which depend on water from snow melt), the Great Plains states, the Rocky mountain states, as well as Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. In California, traditional vegetable and fruit crops are nearly wiped out by winter freezes and summer drought, while the lack of snow prevents winter wheat from germinating properly in the Great Plains and late spring freezes wipe out much of it, and the summer wheat and corns crops are devastated by drought. Texas and the southern plains suffer severely as well from drought and late freezes, and even the Old South, Midwest and Eastern seaboard have drought problems that reduce crop yields significantly, along with late freezes.

1965-69
The continued droughts and late freezes, although not as severe as 1964, are still sufficient to force the end of citrus growing in much of California, as well as parts of Florida. This is a boon for Australia and the South Americans. It also stimulates mass migrations of Hispanics that traditionally picked crops in Texas, Florida and California south back home or even further south to the FNS. Meanwhile, many farmers are driven off the Great Plains which reduces the population of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta and Idaho between 20-50% (depending on area). Some areas of the Great Plains become desert during this time, and severe dust storms are frequent.

The governments of Huron, Texas, the Rocky Mountain Republic and Colorado Free State are forced to put into place significant measures to replant grass, severely restrict grazing and end dry farming in areas with low rainfall even during good years. In short, a great deal of the Great Plains ends up reverting back to nature by 1969.

In Columbia and Utah, the effects of the drought end citrus farming in most areas, with only coastal California managing to retain Citrus and Wine production. The Central Valley is forced to switch over to dairy, beef, and pork production, with large amounts of fodder and cereal crop production, while the Imperial Valley, once the leading region in the world for many citrus crops, reverts to desert as the water from the Colorado River is needed for urban populations.

In New England, central and eastern Huron, Dixie, and Quebec the years are hard, but they gradually recover as the decade continues. Drought isn’t as big a problem, and the gradual return to more normal growing seasons allows food production to pick up. Florida has hard times in citrus production but gradually returns to normal, unlike the Rio Grande Valley and California Central Valley.

During this period, North American food production increases to 275. Food rationing remains in effect everywhere, as do victory gardens. This enables North America to feed 224 million of its own people, and allows North America to export food to feed 326 million. Columbia exports food to China sufficient to feed 60 million, and enough to Japan to feed 5 million. Deseret, Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Republics ship out of the West Coast and they send enough food to feed another 10 million Japanese or Chinese or Koreans. New England is able to get enough food from Huron to stave of problems. Texas and Dixie are the biggest exporters however, with Texas exporting sufficient food to Russia and Europe to feed 110 million and Dixie exporting sufficient food to Europe to feed 141 million.
