"Bush War" Signup Thread

No, I don't mean "Bush War" as in good ol' Dubya and Iraq. Just to clear that up. Now that that's out of the way...

The Premise
I'd like to start a nice counter-insurgency RP, modeled on the "bush wars" of the late 1970s in southern Africa, in which South Africa, Rhodesia, and Portugal fought long and militarily successful, politically disastrous campaigns against communist and black nationalist insurgents.

Background
The Imperial Commonwealth of Malkyer has just finished fighting a war, in which one of the major fronts was the Viceroyalty of the Cape of Good Hope. During the war, rumors spread about independence for the colonies in exchange for loyalty during the war; such independence, however, was never officially offered nor granted. Many groups in southern Africa, mostly black nationalists and leftists, but interspersed with right-wing whites and ornery colonists, are clamoring for independence. Both the Viceroyal and Imperial governments are generally ignoring these petitions, focusing more on rebuilding the parts of the Empire devastated by war. Some of the more desperate factions are preparing for violence.

Where You Come In
Insurgencies cannot last without a refuge. This refuge can be a physical one (like the Viet Cong fleeing into North Vietnam or Cambodia during the Vietnam War), or a "haven" of continuous funding and supplies (the CIA provided such to the Afghans during the Soviet invasion in the 1980s).

I need some nations who, for whatever reason, want to see the Imperial Commonwealth out of Africa. You can RP as rebels and insurgents, supply them with funding or weapons, or have a cadre of your military train and lead them against the forces of order.

Insurgents:
Tinsuvilia
Kulikovo

"Forces of Order":
Malkyer
Khailfah al Musilmeen
Jagada
Upper Weston

Insurgent Supporters/Suppliers:
Tinsuvilia
Gruenberg
Amazonian Beasts
Mondoth
Liberated New Ireland

Note:
I am no longer accepting applications, as this has gotten pretty full. I will type an intro for the IC thread, and once that is up I will post the link in this thread, and TG to those involved.

If Only I really cared!

If you don't care, don't post. It's simple.

Interesting. I would like to join but I'm tied up in two threads already. Maybe later.

OOC - You know that the Afghan rebels had a haven in Pakistan...

Of course. I was merely illustrating the point that a haven or refuge can be physical or otherwise.
Gruenberg

OOC: This sounds like a fairly interesting scenario. Assuming this isn't part of an Earth...can I get in? Gruenberg would be best disposed to supply the insurgents, although that would to an extent depend on their aims - they would be more likely to support the nationalists than the communists - and the idea of RPing insurgency appeals, as I generally RP on the other side in the context of Gruenberg (who are fighting their own insurrection). So, yeah...sounds interesting.

OOC: I would be interested in aiding/RPing the insurgents.

AB, I got your telegram and replied.

Gruenberg and Tinsuvilia, you guys are welcome to join in. I'll add everybody to the list.

Return TG, and I'm with the Insurgents.
Mondoth
05-05-2006, 02:36
Mondoth has a long tradition of 'keeping an open mind' towards 'unconventional warfighters' but for the record, we will deny everything and bomb any insurgent camps that might incidentally link us to said insurgency rather than it be found out that we ever supported so much as a rogue group of poets.
so youc an sign me up to help the isurgents out with arms and money and training and what not
Jagada

Well, I more or less an obligated to join this--seeing as how I more or less went AWOL on our last RP. I'll support you--as Jagada's way of trying to establish an alliance with Malkyeri to fix the past.

I'll be insurgents. But I don't know any African names and such.

This 70s tech or present day?

Also, what are the languages and cultures of the region?

I think I'll join up, but I'm not as what yet.

Modern tech. As for the languages and cultures, they're mostly Bantu derivitaves, but Wikipedia or the CIA World FactBook will be more helpful than me in that respect.

Here's a list of the areas where the insurgency will be occuring: South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and Mozambique.

Kulikovo, here's a website for name creation that may help: http://www.behindthename.com/random/

Willing to provide the insurgencies with supplies and training from Special Fores, and later with regulars.

I'll role play as a peacekeeping/counterinsurgency force.

I'd like to come in as a supporter of the insurgents if you think there's space. (Quite a few folks involved already...)

OOC: Wait, are we talking democratic or communist insurgents or those wierd religious insurgents?
Malkyer
07-05-2006, 02:35
Mostly communistic/nationalist insurgents, Kubra.

Anyway, I meant to do this last night, but I got sidetracked. I'm closing the openings after Upper Weston, and will work on typing up an intro for later tonight or possibly tomorrow. I will post a link here and TG it to those involved once the thread is up.

Some important information for the RP:

1) Malkyer's capital is Vancouver.
2) The African Viceroyal capital is Pretoria.
3) Immigration and colonization from Malkyer has increased the white population somewhat, but Africans are still the overwhelming majority in most areas, with notable exceptions being Pretora and the port cities of Cape Town, Luderitz, Walvis Bay, Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Mossel Bay.
4) The Emperor's name is Alexei Saarad I.
5) The Cape Viceroy's name is Alphonse Perides.
6) Zimbabwe is referred to as "Rhodesia" by Malkyeri colonists and older whites, and "Zimbabwe" by natives and younger whites. Both names mean the same thing for RP purposes.
7) Land reform in South Africa and Zimbabwe has been halted by the Viceroyal Government for the duration of investigations into claims of racially motivated violence and other crimes. Thus, whites still control a disproportionately high percentage of wealth and property.

Ahem. It seems that over the course of this RP, several of the insurgent/insurgency supporting nations have disappeared. Thus, I am re-opening the RP to people who are interested. I'll update the list in the first post after I see what kind of response I get.

Here's a link to the RP so far:

I've been following the thread for some time, and I like the idea... and while I'd be interested in playing a small part, it wouldn't make much sense for another empire with its own colonial holdings to be attempting to subvert another's. At least so long as the two nations don't have intentions on the same territory. And the UK has no intentions on taking any African territory. But if Malkyer would need some support, be it militarily or even moral stances of UK support, the statement by Dawson with regards to the Islamic cartoon situation went a long way in ensuring UK support of Malkyer in this bush war.

A statement of support would be nice, Azazia.
