President Kennedy and the First Lady visit Sydney, Canberra, and Darwin before flying to Manila. Along the way visits are made to the future states of Hawaii and Polynesia. After Manila, the President and his wife visit Guam before flying to the future state of Alaska.

An inquiry is made whether the Japanese would like a visit is also made (in which case Kennedy goes to Japan after Guam and before Alaska)

As the 1960 elections draw closer, rallies and marches became more and more popular throughout the country. Greens, Social Democrats, Liberal Democrats, and several smaller parties all sought to gain more seats in the Diet. Current Standings out of 300 seats (same colors indicate coalition government):

Hiroshi Aki's shocking decision to build a nuclear power plant and then his next decision to build as any as 3 more has drawn criticism from the Green party, who voted against the budget, but drew approval from Social Democrats, Liberal Democrats, and Independants, with a vote of 250-50 in favor of the budget. The Diet also voted to expand the number of seats in the Diet to 500 by next year. Elections are set for late 1960

President Hiroshi Aki stepped to the Diet speaking platform and cleared his throat. "Ladies and gentlemen of the Diet, I have called you here for a special reason." behind him, 2 aides brought forward a TV. "You are here to witness a new step japan has taken, hopefully for the better" The TV turned on, and the sky that had been showing was interrupted by a nuclear mushroom cloud. "Japan has built its first nuclear weapons"

At this point, the angry shouts of the greens drowned him out, and as Prime Minister Aki tried to calm the corwod, all the Greens and a handful of Soacial Democrats marched out. 102 members had left, meaning less than 3/4's of the Diet remained. Emergency elections were called for to end the crisis
Haneastic
31-05-2006, 02:02
The emergency election yielded a massive overturn of the Green party as most of their seats were lost of the moderate Independants or Liberal Social Democrats. The elections also brought a majority party to power in the first time in japanese history. Election results:

Social Democrats: 166
Liberal Democrats: 130
Greens: 25
Independants: 69

OOC: basically the Greens lost because they forced elections, and the fact they have no way to counter the fact that there is nothing more clean than nuclear power. Expect them to come back when solar and wind power come into power

Hiroshima, Japan

Katsuo Kazuki was an angry man. He had been a member of the Green party all his life, and was furious that the warmongering Social and Liberal Democrats had conspired to reduce the Green's power. It was time to take action.

He had gathered 5 other fellow Greens with him, and they had secretly acquired weapons and made explosives. They planned to destroy the nuclear power plant to show the world how dangerous it was. They had spent several days secretly tunneling under the fence surrounding the plant, and now they were ready.

He clambered up out of the tunnel and layed down, waiting for a response from security. There was none. They 6 of them crept up to one of the plant's smoking exits. All they had to do was wit for someone to come out.

5 minutes later a guard came out cupping his hands to shield the flame on his cigarette. Katsuo rushed up and plunged the knife into the man's neck, while another Green rushed forward to catch the guard. Pocketing the man's gun and keys, the moved into the plant, encountering no one else. As they moved along, they saw their target: the reactor itself. Running down the corridor, they didn't bother to check for anyone else, and they collided with a 4 man security team.

Both sides opened fire immediately, killing 3 guards and 4 Green members instantly. The last guard got out a warning, and Katsuo started running toward the blast door, which was miraculously open. He heard a loud gunshout and the sound of booted feet running in the corridor and feared the worst had happened, but he had to do his job. He ran up a flight of stairs, his satchel full of explosives with him, he got to the top to see 12 guards all aiming assualt rifles at him. They opened fire....

The Japanes Ministry of Defense announced a failed attack on the Hiroshima plant and announced the Intelligence Agency would look into the affair

In a stunning move, Prime Minister Hiroshi Aki declared he would not run for a third term in 1964. This move surprised many advocates, who expected him to win and possibly run for a fourth term. Several canidates are vying for the role, including the secretary of the Interior, Hotaru Kin, who if elected, would be the first woman prime minister.

The Republic of South Africa would be honored to participate in such an exchange with Japan. South Africa would be willing to send both univeristy-level students and scientists to Japan, though at the present time we cannot accept Japanese citizens; the political situation in South Africa is such that the safety of foreign citizens cannot be absolutely guaranteed. In the future, though, South Africa looks forward to welcoming Japanese citizens into our universities.

OOC: Basically, South Africa wants to avoid the political fallout that would occur on the off-chance a Japanese student was killed in a riot.

TOP Secret Communique from Canberra, delivered by hand to Seoul in late March, 1964 (yay fluid time!):

In the 9 months since this nation was approached by the SCT concerning closer ties, the global balance of power has changed tremendously. We all live today in an age of chaos, for 1964 will surely be looked upon as the most terrible year in the history of man.

As such, the Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand is prepared to more seriously consider close ties with Asia. The Oceanic Alliance is dead and Australia's allies are dispersed and concerned with their local tragedies. As such, we must consider alternatives.

We hope that the tragedy of the previous months has not divided us from our neighbors and we beg forgiveness on behalf of the Oceanic Alliance. We would urge you to remember that when Asia was attacked, Australia remained on the sidelines, ordering American aircraft based in Darwin to remain on the ground. And of course, recall our long history of cooperation with the major Asian powers.

As such, this nation formally requests a limited membership in the SCT, to be active as of January 1st, 1965. This nation would hope to be able to send observers to SCT meetings, with further membership in the organization to be discussed at a later date...

We eagerly await your reply.

Japan is troubled by the events of the last decade. An arms race once again led to disaster, and only through apparent blessings of the Gods did Japan escape the catastrophe suffered by China and the USEA. As it was Japan suffered heavily. Nearly 2 million old and young died prematuraly due to radiation sickness, cancer and chronic health conditions worsened by the Nuclear Autumn, food rationing and fall out from China from 1964-69. The Europeans nearly blew themselves to pieces as well.

The military way was not the answer it seemed. It hadn't worked during the 2nd Great War, it worked disastrously during the 3rd Great War as the Americans and Australians conquered Japan after destroying the navy, and once again the military hadnt prevent Japan suffering sorely during the Twilight War.

The Zaibatsu meet during 1964 and 1965 and decide there must be a better way. The Chinese way brought disaster, the Union way was even worse, and even the American and Western Way hand't worked for those nations.

There must now be a Japanese Way.

ooc
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zaibatsu

In 1969, the Japanese government, which over the last 4 years has been brought to heel by the Zabatsu as they bring down the pro military people one by one either through election or scandel has changed.

With that change Japanese policy has changed.

The Japanese government announces on July 1, 1969 that it would be withdrawing from the military portions of the SCT Alliance, but was williing to continue trade agreements. Space exploration would be considered seperately.

The Japanese government also approaches the Russian, Columbian and FNS governments, as well as the governments it is already in talks with (Australia and the Philippines), as well as Malaysia, Indonesia, and India, regarding trade agreements, as if needed, economic aid.

(ooc seriously, the Japanese could be doing a lot better and they haven't won a war since 1905. Being nuked changed their history in RL, and in this RP, they got conquered, ruled by the Americans, and then suffered damage because their ally got nuked. So a Japanese Way fits them culturally and they could be a lot richer then they are. Settling for second place behind China doesn't suit the Japanese realistically either).

(No it really doesn't.)

The UIP continues it's talks with Japan on keeping a Status Quo in relation to the old SCT trade agreements as the SCT dissolves into the SEG.
