Built as an more advanced alternative to the A-17 Warhawk and A-10 Thunderbolt II, The A-39 features the same high strengthTitanium armor and 30mm DU gatling cannon of the A-17. With a weapons range of 25 miles, it's maverick missiles can take out tanks, AAA and SAMs before they have a chance to scramble. This combined with its countermeasures and armor makes it an extremly survivable aircraft. It also has improved engines with a IR signature deflectors which help reduce the area that a heat seeking missle has to lock on to by deflecting it away from the percived IR missile threat. This, combined with advanced IR flares, and the IR missile blinding laser system (and the fuel tank and crew area armor) makes it an extremely survivable aircraft. Able to take 23mm AAA shell strikes as if they were 9mm pistol rounds, the A-39 can survive a single engine destruction and make it home with half its tail shot away and only the one functioning engine!

Doesnt look very maneuverable, and its fight ceiling is too low to avoid most current SAM's. And it's slow. I'm not seeing the benifit to using this expensive aircraft over the Thunderbolt II.

Holds more weapons, is 130 mph faster, has roughly the same ceiling as the A-10 but it doesnt matter because it usually operates below 10,000 ft, and it doesnt avoid sams, it kills them and it has more advanced counter measures and armor.

Does it also have any sort of pilot-protection armor (like the titanium tub in the A10) How will the engines fare to being shot up by small arms (which WILL happen in real war)?

If you read, it has an improved version of the titianium armor of the A-10.

Although the engines are armored, the armor piercing rounds from a 20mm minigun on a modern fighter jet would proably down it with ease, but you do have 4 sidewinders for defense, and its likely your enemy wont get in range. And you should cover these with fighters anyway. As for small arms fire, trying to do something more than scratching the paint with anything smaller than a 14.5mm depleted uranium round will be an exersize in futility.
