This is not intended as a Factbook, but for my (and my allies'/enemies') personal reference. I intend to update continuosly.

The Kingdom of Bertling has a de facto eleven year mandatory service for men, and nine years for women. The public schools educate children from 1st to 7th grade, then Military Youth Academies take over the education.

After reaching the age of eighteen, they enter into military service in any of the major sevice branches. During this time they are considered mobilized.

In theory, this means that every citizen has military training and may be mobilized. The reality is that only thirty percent of the population is enrolled in the mobilization army, and there has never been a mobilization of this scale.

Military Youth Academy
When children reach the age of twelve, they enter Youth Academies. While they recieve some rudimentary martial education, the emphasis is on structure and disipline, as well as physical training. As the Junior Cadets reach the third year, they choose a branch for the remaining three years.

Training and Equipment
All elisted soldiers go through twelve months of training before they are put int active service. After this, they still train five of twelve months unless they are engaged in a conflict. Bertlingian boot camps has been compared to battlefields, and exercise casualties are not unheard of. Live fire maneuvers are a vital part of the BAF Training Doctrine.

While obedience is emphasised, the military awards individual initiative. Each soldier is expected to know the tasks of those three ranks above him, so that should his surperior fall, he may assume his possition.

The Homeland Service Uniform is gray BDU, high black laced boots, black weapon belt, and unit specific head wear. When on a sharp mission, all soldiers wear personnal armor, BDT rifle (according to service), gas mask and kevlar helmet. In cold weather, soldiers wear long, heavy wool coats.

Officers may wear the Homeland Service Uniform or unit-specific Dress Uniform. Most officers prefer the hip-long buttoned jacket and the lond boots of the Dress Uniform, and it is not uncommon to wear a sabre.

In the field, both offcers and enlisted men wear BDUs with appropriate camo-patterns.
