The Rise of the Petty Tyrants (Leafanistani Civil War)

Leafanistan

6 And behold, the petty tyrants that rise from the ashes.
7 The dark phoenix, two of them, shadow the outlands.
8 One a misguided man, led by an invisible ideal, absurd as a flying teapot.
9 The other, the leader of an ancient cult.
10 Bent on calling the greatest enemy to Terra, and destroying all who inhabit it.

Leafanistani Wasser

The local Army had rebelled and refused to stand with the far-away 'Confederates' of either side. They overran the Air Force garrison and the Naval Base. They disregarded the 'Confederate' cease-fire and went rampaging about.

The Loyalists couldn't help as their Naval Forces were tied up bombarding the Reformist Navy which popped out of nowhere. Rumours flew about of flying ships, aircraft that made dragonflies look like amateurs and telescopes that could burn a hole straight through Kreigzimmer built ships.

Then a man rallied the forces. He declared himself High Chancellor of Wasser and deposed the Governour General. Soon his ultra-conservative platform won over the majority of the voters. Many fled to the neighboring Allied zones. The religious rhethoric grew and grew, more and more fled. Soon nearly 5% of the population had left. He grew nervous. He ordered the remainder stay, even if he had other plans for them.

Border with Allied Zones

The ditches were being dug with slave labour. Those who tried to leave were rounded up and put in charge of laying charges. Soon at around 2 AM it was complete and all throughout what was once Rovonia a massive eruption was heard. Tiny mushroom clouds filled the border area and the double chain-link fence shook like mad. A 5 metre wide, 6 metre deep trench had been dug by explosives and the slaves went inside to finish it up. They then began laying 'Bouncing Bettys' and anti-tank mines.

The next day it was complete, a massive anti-tank ditch, filled with mines and on the other side the foundation for a concrete wall were being drawn up. 2 metres thick and 5 metres tall with turrets for stationary gun emplacements, it was meant to keep others out while keeping the people in.

It was High Chancellor Adam Sutler's own Iron Curtain.

Kane had assembled his armies, the new battlesuits were well designed. He liked the Loyalist style, utilitarian, yet fearsome. Though he personally altered the paint so that the black would be the darkest black imaginable. A colour that seemed to suck light out of the room and contained the darkest nightmares.

He also changed the air filter, so that the eyepieces were a bright red, and lit from within. The air already came out chilled and with a hoarse sound. Made his foot soldiers seem otherworldly. He liked it, the propaganda value was immense.

He looked out into the Tiberium infested deserts and also smilied. His future was coming true. He returned to his holophone and called up General Slavik.

In the background were the remains of 'It'. A massive silver disc, 100 metres in diametre sitting in the Tiberium field. A victim of the highjacked Red Tidean SAMs. Kane chuckled to himself that the 'guests of honour' weren't resistant to such simple missiles.

Slavik was doing well, the training was complete and Tiberium harvesting was in full swing. The revolution was going to begin, and Kane didn't want to be late.

45 And Sutler took the children and threw them against the wall.
46 He declared the deaths to be the work of his dark god.
47 And the people cheered him on.

Leafanistani Wasser, Concentration 34

Here is where all the homo-'undesirables' under Sutler's neo-facist reign went. Lesbians, Gay men, even Bisexuals and those perceved to be 'queer' were sent. There they worked, building weapons, mainly the KF2 and 160mm Mortars but a few aircraft also went through the camp.

They were tortured, tied up against the wall and their genitals beaten with sticks and guns. Many died from bloodloss. Several bisexual women were given miscarriages that way. Many comitted suicide.

But to the public and the rest of the world, it is where society's dregs were sent for 'rehabilitation.'

Word got out though amoung those who still cared and the IGLBA (International Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Alliance) found out. They staged a protest and boarded Aerochariot Flight 78 to Leafanistani Wasser.

Skies above the McKagan Zone, 23 kilometres to Leafanistani Zone

"This is Flight 78 calling for acknowledgement from Sutler Airport tower."

"..."

"Flight 78 to Sutler Tower, do you copy? Over."

"..."

"Uh...McKagan tower, Sutler Tower is not copying can you raise them? Over."

"*static*"

"Are we being jammed?"

Suddenly the cockpit was filled with a collison alert as a Red Tidean made SAM streaked toward the aircraft. The plane activated its thermal countermeasures but the missile was using both IR and UV and easily found its target. The missile impacted on the left wing and tore the Boeing 767 in two. The front section with the right wing intact spun out of the sky. It was throwing passengers and cargo out as it did so and crashed into the border zone, along the wall and smashed a hole straight through the fence and halfway into the concrete barrier.

The remaining section stayed in McKagan airspace for a short while before landing a few kilometres from the border.

Public Statement from the Moral Republic of Wasser

"Today we have made another stride in the advancement of Christian ethics. A group of vile homosexuals, and their Jewish and Muslim allies were approaching our fine nation and planned to sow dissent amoung the people and depose me, the High Chancellor for imaginary crimes. Is it wrong to do the work of God? I think not. Therefore we have removed the threat.

And to the rest of the world, what do you care that a few immoral homosexuals have been killed? We did what was right, in the name of God."

Kane began his first offensive. He ordered a few of his most fanatical forces, dressed themselves as terrorists to execute the plan. Kane wondered if it would work, it wouldn't matter in a while anyway.

Allied Border

The terrorists snuck their way past the suited guards and hit behind a small ridge. They loaded their 120mm mortars, each with a piece of tiberium attached to it. And began their onslaught, dropping the dangerous mineral and destroying the border fence and crossing the anti-tank ditch.

Soon enough the border guard tracked them down. The men with their orders turned the mortars on their own brethern. The plan had to appear geniune. An Attack Buggy was destroyed completely while a Tick Tank was damaged.

Kane's forces called up the Mercenary Fleet and soon the former Velkyan pilots were alerted that someone had a mission lined up.

It was for a simple bombing run with a LASER guided 2000 lb bomb to be dropped on the target.

Press Release from Global Jihad

We of Global Jihad have struck on again on our SWC oppressors. Today we have released the toxic mineral Tiberium, a gift from Allah, onto our enemies and the ground shall be poisoned beneath their feet. Soon they will be destroyed and we shall reign free, in the glory of Allah.

Those who have died tonight fighting for us are now enjoying the paradise that they get for being martyrs.

The release ended with the masked men firing their AKs into the air while screaming.

Kane smiled a bit and prepared the standard condemnation speech to be released to the press. It was going along great, though the speech was premature.

A Christian regime has been set up and is now systematically exterminating homosexuals. Normally, an landing force would have been deployed already, but our hands are tied due to our colonization of Liantao Island. We do not have many forces to spare."

The Premier leaned back in his chair. "Dispatch two Guangzhou-class DDGs and three Jiangwei-class frigrates to Leafanistan, but stay in international waters. Defend and assist any fleeing refugees."

"Permission to fire at Leafanistani vessels?"

Zhou furrowed his brows. "Only if they fire first. Time is of the essence."

"Understood."

"Yes High Chancellor"

From the other side it was visible that the Moralists have responded. Soon a few hydrofoils flew in and started a patrol parallel to the Chinese ships. After a while 3 Illium class destroyers appeared. Soon they were trailed by 3 very unusual looking destroyers with large domes. They appeared to be electronic warfare ships based on the size of the domes. And soon enough, miles away some more disposable ships, Ma'anshan class frigates appeared, about 6 of them, prepared for a standoff.

[The MIDD Complex - Triesa McKagan]

"Sir, we've got a situation in Rovonia. A Christian regime has taken control in the Leafanistani section due to the lack of control from the mainland. They just shot down a passenger jet above our territory there, too."

The General on the other side of the table was a strategic genius. He always made a great show for the 24-hour news channels.

"Ok - get the MCID to recon that whole motherfucking country. Get the coastline, too. Mobilize the closest 50 Hamlin Class Attack Submarines to move into the area and provide close in support. Don't start an engagement yet though. I want a full 2 million Marines in Libertad, too. Close enough for an invasion and out of their range of recon. Get back to me once our submarines are massing in the area. We'll start before even launching a press campaign. That's something McKagan has never did before. We have what... 5 million troops in our section of Rovonia? They aren't going to touch that. We can sure as hell touch them, though..."

General Stark stook and walked from the room to go get coffee. To be preparing a massive assault he was utterly calm.

IC: Chinese/Wasser Standoff

It was night, the sun was due to rise soon, but most of the crew was awake to deal with nighttime ambushes. There was an unusual amount of radio traffic between the domed ships, mostly in the microwave band, and it seemed to be highly encrypted. Suddenly the transmissions grew and grew and shifted across the spectrums until it stopped.

Unseen to everybody else the object inside the dome turned toward the Jiangwei frigates. It aimed toward the closest one and a controlled burst of radio waves came out. Soon enough, every conducting metal came to life within the ship, it was as if a lightening storm burst within the ship's bowels toward the engine room, nearing the fuel compartment. The second dome on that ship was aimed toward the ship's bridge and after a quick burst, suddenly the bridge was lit with life, bolts of electricity would arc everywhere , frying all equipment and people indescriminately.

That was all that was needed. The hydrofoils moved forward slowly and using their IR/UV scanners they began to pluck men out of the sea. The dead were placed on deck underneath tarps and the burial at sea flags, so the living didn't have to see them. It was a grizzly job, in fact, no one except the command staff of the domed destroyers knew exactly what happened.

It would seem prudent to discuss with such a traditional and powerful ally of the Leafanistani people. How about in the Parliament building? It seems appropriate . Of coruse I will provide the best security.

Our Lieutenant Diplomat will be dispatched via a MH-75 Helicopter shortly.

With a fleet of 50 Next Generation SSN's moving toward Leafanistan at nearly 40 knots each, McKagan had a definate trump card. Each was at its maximum depth. That depth would be far greater than most older submarines. At that depth they cannot engage or be engaged easily and are even harder to detect. Eventually they will penetrate Wasser territorial waters and take up targets.

At the McKagan embassy/small fort a Blue MH-75 Helicopter with "Democratic Imperium of McKagan" painted on each side lifts off with Lt. Ambassador Brandon Dougherty aboard. Along with 8 MIMC Marines - it's only a short trip to the Parliament building.

The special thing about this envoy? Instead of simple ammunition designed to piece battlesuits they were armed with ammunition that kills if it even managed to scratch the enemy. How? Sarin was inserted in place of the high explosive used for the anti-Capitol Police round.

Walking down the red carpet was always fun for Dougherty. He liked pretending his band from Triesa had finally made it big and he was finally going to the award shows that McKagan was famous far. That wasn't quiet the case, but for the leather-ized member of the McKagan Imperial State Department it didn't really matter.

As he finally made it to Sutler he stretched out his arm for a handshake, turned his head, and said "Can we please make it inside before the media show up?"

FROM: Premier Evan Zhou of the Greater Chinese Region

Three days ago a GCRN frigrate was attacked and destroyed in international waters near the coast of Leafanistan. We have reason to believe that it may been an attack by the Lefanistani Navy.

We had made contact with six destroyers and six destroyers a couple hours before the destruction of our frigrate. Our flagship also detected unusually high levels of radio traffic between three Leafanistani destroyers mounted with possible Electronic Warfare systems. Further inspection of the destroyed vessel revealed that all electronic circuits were fried moments before the ship exploded. Considering the electronics in our ships are made to sustain EMP from a thermonuclear device, this was no ordinary power surge.

If such an attack could be mounted by the Leafanstani Navy, the repercussions are enormous. The ability to fry shielded electronics and sink a frigrate by a surface ship is obviously a huge threat to regional peace and stability.

Of course, we have no proof. The Greater Chinese Region, although suspicious of Sulter's motives, is not willing to launch any preemptive attack on Leafanistan.

Howver, intelligence gathering is not out of the question. Unfortunately, currently we do not have the resources to unilaterally mount an intelligence operation aganist Leafanistan. I believe that a joint effort aganist Leafanistan is the only way to ensure the safety of all our nations. I hope that you will realize the importance of ensuring that such a weapon is not possessed by a psychotic dictator like Sutler.

We await your decision.

"I think the biggest concern is your overly Christian political setup. McKagan doesn't agree with the Christian sense of morality and the prosecution of homosexuals. General Stark sat in his dark room once more. Looking at a computer with various tactical data streams coming through from the submarine task force was his current job - one which could very well be the important one of the last few months.

All 50 of the submarines had entered the theatre. Half of them were poking around on the territorial waters/international waters line and preparing to provide missile attacks against the Leafanistani surface fleet should the order to engage be given.

The other 25 had the "fun" job. Every single Wasserian vessel deployed against the other foreign fleets had at least one submarine placed on an attack vector to it. At their maximum depth these submarines couldn't open their torpedo tubes - nor could any other submarine. Finding them was quite difficult as well, especially while watching other fleets. These vectors allow the submarines to quickly charge upwards, unload a snapshot of 6 torpedo's into the underside of the vessel, and then dive quickly. A hard threat to counter, they are.

They were inside now and there was a well furnished large hall, filled with chairs and stands for MPs. At the moment it was empty and in the center was a table filled with the 'meagre' snacks Sutler had promised. Slices of duck, caviar and all sorts of fancy refinements lined the table.

A servant took the cork out of a bottle of fine red wine, aged 12 years and poured it for the McKagan representative. Sutler declined, he being a former alcoholic didn't wish to touch the stuff.

"I understand, but my advisors informed me that it was a threat that had to be stopped. The airliner contained about 15 pounds of C12, smuggled in covertly pass a Algeristani checkpoint when the plane first took off in Algeristan. We believe the 'Internationale' or the the Communist Party in Algeristan is plotting against us. It sees us as a threat to Leafanistani and Communist hegemony. Our religious stance is in direct opposition to their ideals and they just needed a vehicle. Enter our friends the International Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Alliance."

"You see, we have taken a negative stance on what we consider to be 'crimes against our Lord and savior', and the hardliners in my party would like nothing more than to line them up and shoot them all. However, that isn't an option, so we adopted policies to discourage them from staying here. Those who cause trouble, like all those who cause trouble are sent to work camps, a standard practice."

"Back on topic, the airliner, if you read the blue folder there," Sulter gestured toward a blue folder next to the national dossier, "it reveals our intelligence and photographs of the suspected terrorists. From cell phone intercepts and email decrypting we have put together a plan that involves them taking the C12 off the plane, into the airport and the IGLBA would start a protest there. After they gather enough people, the terrorists, would blow themselves, the IGLBA, and anyone around and probably a large section of the airport to kingdom come. Something, we couldn't take. However, revealing this fact to anyone else, would be a security risk. If Algeristan knew we were on to them, it could become full war. In fact I'm the only thing standing between the hardliners and full war. It is all very troublesome. I'm getting gray hair and I'm only 45!"

As powerful as I can be, I'm still at the mercy of the people and what the people want is a ultraconservative platform. There is already talk of me being weak on homosexuals and foreigners."

"But you are correct, I need to take charge of these things and reign in the hardliners. Another incident like that would be tragic. I need to get my own government under control, we are still young, so there will be growing pains."

"However, on the topic of intelligence, we can't give you much data. Our methods are classified as our agents. Our intercepts are standard Leafanistani, and the hardliners instituted mandatory wiretaps for 'sinners' a few months prior. This came through our computerized system for the words "communist, ideal, internationale, homosexual, etc." You can take the dossier with you, it was printed out for a reason."

"I would also like nothing of these conversations to get out, to anybody unless absolutely necessary. What goes on in these rooms is private, and terribly valuable to my enemies. As for telling Algeristan, absolutely not. If they find out, we'll be ruined. Algeristan has a few silos I believe, and maybe a sub. We could be ruined. All of us."

Sutler rubbed his temples a bit. "I'll have a dossier prepared and shipped to the embassy by armed courier by tonight on the Algeristan situation. If they find out, we can have a serious issue on us."

Encrypted Message to Greater Chinese Region and McKagan

The results of our prelimineary investigation are as follows.

This is our current timeline.

Electronic Surveillence Ship K45 recieved a series of high-resolution photographs which took about 10 minutes to transmit fully and to verify the data was flawless.

During the last 2 minutes an electronic anomoly was detected by K34 on the side of the Jiangwei frigate in question. Then about 12 seconds later the bridge experienced the same anomoly and the frigate exploded.

We have analyzed the schematics and our own decommissioned Jiangwei Frigates which will be undergoing upgrades to Jiangwei-IV standards and have discovered a fault in the electronics of the Jiangwei Frigate which was minor but when combined with salt-water corrosion could be serious.

As is well known, chinese equipment cuts corners to save money. The circuit breakers on the Jiangwei Frigate, especially the internal circuitry was not made salt-water proof. The corrosion could have caused a fault in the circuitry. While this is nothing more than a minor power surge during increased alert status this is serious. The heightened alert status would keep power requirements high and the corroded wires would fault and overload the circuit.

With the engine recieving a constant 'accerlate' impulse from the damaged circuit breaker, it created a positive feedback loop that eventually resulted in the overload of the sensor array and the bridge causing fatal consequences. The option of shutting down the engine was now removed and the engine would rev up even more. At this high a speed and with that much voltage, the engine room, and sadly the fuel storage would become dangerous and eventually detonate.

All this woudl happen in the span of just a few minutes, far too short a time for anyone to react.

It is the findings of the commision that all Wasser Jiangwei-class Frigates add salt-proofing to their wires, at a substasntial cost of rewiring nearly the entire ship.

"It is alright, while I may be a slave to the tyranny of the majority, I have enough loyal people in my ranks to be assured of my safety. Good bye and good luck."

"I'll talk to you later, then."

With that Dougherty walked from the room and met up with the Marines who were escorting him outside on the red carpet again. With the Wasser intelligence report under his right arm he boarded the helicopter again. It was secured, and eventually lifted off on the short flight back to the McKagan embassy.

With the possibility of an all out war breaking out in Wasser, and to be able to ensure Sutler that he's safe, the IMN decides to deploy a surface fleet. With most of the Super Dreadnaughts in dock or just preparing to pull it it's a perfect chance to deploy one to a possible combat zone.

The fleet is also a larger one in general to simply show that the IMN has made several investments. 10 Sartonia Class Battleships, 1 Zealous Class Super Dreadnaught, and 20 Avisron Class Destroyers leave Triesa City Waters to set sail for the Wasser conflict.

In Triesa's MIDD Compound General Stark sits at his desk. Still going over tactical data from all over the Leafanistani conflict. He recently recieved an appointment to lead the charge in reuniting Leafanistan into a secular, capitalist market.

"Look sir, we just got a copy of the Wasser accident report. They're calling it a problem with the ship."

Stark laughed out loud.

"Colonel, how many times do you know of a Frigate exploding and sinking because it got wet? I'm telling you, there's something going on with those big destroyers who look like they're loaded out for electronical warfare. No navy needs that many RADAR installations, especially when you're funding a primarily defensive force. I want you to make sure that we send each and every one of those things to the bottom if the Christians try to take over the nation."
