OOC Advice for going FT

I want to start RPing FT. Although its never appealed to me before, I have sudden urge to take it up. So has anyone got advice?

What good FT RP's are going on? Whats common technology at the moment? Well? Is Star wars preferred, or Warhammer 40k? Or Do most people use their own custom tech? Do different technologies mix? e.g. One player Star wars with another Warhammer.

What do you consider Gming? Ships the size of planets? Unshielable lasars? Unbreakable shields? Planet destroyers?

I've RPed PT and MT, so Im looking forward to something new. Hopefully FT wont let me down.

I was thinking of forming an alliance called the Covenant like the Halo one, who are hell bent on destroying humanity as they are seen as affront to the gods. But if this wern't possible (e.g. noone else would join the Covenant) I would RP a humanoid race.

Cool... FT is always fun... although I prefer MT myself.

Geneticon uses a mix of FT/MT, and I would suggest the same for you.

There are PLENTY of good FT RPs going on right now, and there are actually more FT RPs than MT RPs in this forum. You should have no trouble finding somewhere to play.

As for costs, they are signifigantly higher than MT (which is only realistic), because space travel is obviously expensive.

I run a Storefront for FT craft if you want to check it out: http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=470405

Probably the best ships in FT are Mini Meihm's fleet, which are modified Starcraft stuff. There's a lot of debate over whether certain stuff in FT are legal, and that's a big downfall of this tech period. There's a lot of argument.

I sell primarily BFG ships, which are HUGE and very powerful. Even a small fleet of BFG ships could face a massive group of Star Wars stuff and easily either come to draw or win outright.

Alliances are good in FT, because there are so many players!

Star Wars tech is the most common by far, but there are literally hundreds and maybe even thousands of ships out there for you to buy from scores of different types of tech. Have fun creating a fleet!

Star wars is preffered. 40k is rarely used because it's just not popular enough. In fact, I have the only storefront that I've seen selling their stuff.

Different techs are hard to mix, but it can be done if both players play fair.

Ships the sizes of planets are not too common. Even Death Stars are smaller.

Unshielded lasers are a big problem. For every weapon there is ALWAYS a defense. There should never be a weapon that can't be countered.

Planet destroyers are not GMing if used properly. They actually make a lot of sense, but they COST a heck of a lot! They need to be supported or they get wiped out easily. But I don't consider them GMing.

Personaly, I use my own tech and create graphics using DOGA CGA L3.

there are several good anti-noob threads out there for FT, however, here are some things you dont EVER want to use:

Neutronium
Nanites
Ass-Space (some sort of infinite plane of energy or w/e that you tap into)
ships bigger than planets (fractions of the mass is okay, but never size)
Anything with more than twelve zeroes on it
Ubreakable Shields
Unstopable guns
Demons or Angels (just dont.)
Anything Shivan (think freespace shivans)

there are also certain set rules regarding advanted tech like time travel, and I suggest you talk to some of the old-school uber-FT nations like Indra or Hypersatialtravel about it.

Planet killers are acceptable, however you cant just uber-teh deathstar somone, generally you have to balance a planet killer with certain disabilites.

My personal PKer is 32 huge cannons on the bottom of my flag ship, and they systematically pound a planet's crust off of it, making it unihabitable for the next ten million years. The problem is that the takes a rather long time (aproximately a week of gametime.)

There are other designes for PKers, such as doom lasers, but they often have increadible power-up times, are very vulnerable, and must be defended by a massive fleet at all times.

Ok ok. Are most people human races? Because that will kill my convenant idea, it wont get far without people to back me.

Also do you use your NS populations or make one up? Because even 1 billion is small for planet. Or at least I think it is.

There are a few people who are and a few who aren't. Geneticon is human, but players like Sskiss and a couple other have developed aliens races.

Yes, we usually use the NS numbers to determine our population. Even if the planet is much bigger than the pop limit, that's ok because populations will grow over time.

Not really advice, but from the NFT which was your own idea (although originally with a puppet) it seems that you would do just fine. All you would need to do is scale it all up somewhat in technology and those things.

Anyhow, good luck with getting there, I'm sure you'll manage just fine. :)

(And darn you for inspiring me to get back into this with a new start. Now I'm just feeling like I have to try this again...)

Ok Im going to go humans with a twist. I've got an idea for my opening thread, keep an eye out for it....

Yeah. I personally use all original races, however, many people play human, covenant, or whatever alien race they want. Dont worry about races, my nation is actually a compilation of three or four different races, so the covenant would be just fine bro.

Yes, 1 bil is small for a planet, but then again, we do all our math by the NS numbers, but its okay if you exagerate every now and then.
