Earlhamlandian Soldiers patrol the streets of Earlham City after the invoking of Martial Law

CNN - EARLHAM CITY, EARLHAMLAND: Report are coming in from sources within the nation of Earlhamland that the military has staged a Coup against the government.

Earlhamland, named after the first President of the Most Serene Republic of Earlhamland Charles Roderick Earlham, is a large but relatively unpopulated island nation in the Atlantic Ocean. Sitting near the equator, its climate is hot and largely tropical and contains several small rainforests.

The government of Earlhamland, led by now deposed President Bartholomew Winters, was notoriously unpopular for its mishandling of the economy and social welfare programs, leading to a rise in poverty and civil unrest in the small island nation.

At 2am today, reports were wired to international news agencies worldwide that a small fire-fight had ensued around the Presidential Compound in Earlham City. Reports also came in of Earlhamlandian soldiers and armoured vehicles sitting outside police stations, power plants and other vital areas of the country. At 4am, civilian communications were blacked out, and reports filtered away.

At 9am this morning, communications were re-established, and it was gathered that General John Earlham, a senior military officer and descendent of the founding President, had staged a largely bloodless Coup against the government, declared himself the title of Generalissimo and suspended the Cabinet, Supreme Court and the House of Senators.

Generalissimo Earlham addressed the nation in a live address at midday, where he defended his actions as those of a “patriot and a soldier”, who had a duty to “protect Earlhamland against enemies both within and without.” The Generalissimo promised that, after a short period, democratic elections would be held for the formation of a national government. Until then, the Generalissimo has decreed that Martial Law shall be enacted to contain civil unrest, and a list of “internal state enemies” would be brought to trial for their crimes.

So far, reaction to the invoking of Martial Law and the suspension of government has been docile, with most people preferring to stay indoors at this time and watch unfolding events on television, avoiding the M-16s of the Earlhamlandian soldiers.
