[OOC] Unanimous Dissent – An Obsession for Power (An Intriguing Character RP)

Ok... I've had an idea for an RP for a while now, and I was wondering if there is any interest out there.

This is based in MT, in an imaginary country. The country is a Democratic Republic, and public opinion has a lot to do with what takes place. But some things things have even more to do with what happens. Basically, I want this to be a political intrigue RP, with players playing as members of the government. Each player would only control a member and that member's aides, (and perhaps occasionally a hitman...).

Political tensions in this nation are rising, and every member of the government is after one thing. Power. They are obsessed with the idea of power (each in a unique way). The idea is that when you create your character, you create a character that is obsessed uniquely with power, and the specific methods they use to gain it.

Everybody in the government has a wavering distrust for everyone else, but alliances must be formed if anything is to be done. If power is to be gained. Backstabbing is natural, violence is effective (though openly rare), and politics are constantly practiced.

In the name of Obsession for Power.

I want to play with people who enjoy RPing, do not godmod, like to write, will write quality posts (not only like one paragraph... see "A Passion Play" for excellent writing styles), members who are commited, and who like to have fun.

So who likes it and who's in?

Country Information

Welcome to the land of Preocu, where a healthy population of approx. 68 million people reside. The Democratic Republic is run by a 12 senator government that is voted on by the people every four years. Any political ideals are allowed in the senate, but typically the people enjoy moderate/conservative leaning canidate.

The country is rich in natural resources and has a small, yet powerful and technilogical military.

Financially the country is booming and has never been better. Exchange rates are high and have never been higher, and the stock market standardly goes up and up. Unemployment is low as are taxes.

The country is surrounded by water on three sides and has one border with a friendly nation to the east. The nation itself is divided into 3 regions which determine elections. 4 senators come from each region, although any citizen can vote for any canidates reguardless of where the citizen lives. Each voter casts a vote for up to 3 canidates each election.

The Senate is headed by a president of senate. He oversees the meeting and ensures that things do not go out of control. The president is also seen as the face of the country's leadership, and every 2 years a chairman is elected from among the senators by the senators themselves.

Within the ruling body, every decision that is made must be carried by atleast 7 of the 12 senators. This ensures that if there is a tie the motion is not carried. It must be majority.

The Senate directly controls all affairs of state except the judiciary system.

Seems like an interesting idea to me. I am in... that is if I fit the qualities you are looking for.

I do have a question though: Are we to make up our own characters and their positions? If so, I would like to be a high ranking general.

(Also, is their a president, RPed or NPC?)

You fit it.

Yes, you make up your own characters to fit as a senator in the nation's senate. There is no leader persay (although there is a chair who provide order to the senate.) It's like a regime of 12 men (or women) that runs the country, but they are elected by the people.

So you would have to be a senator... as the military would just get their orders direct from the senate. Of course, you could be the senator that holds the most weight in defense issues, and a former general.

So everyone plays as a senator... the idea is to create 12 different personalities and obsessions and means to gain power.

There is no president.

Senator Michael Stufano, an immigrant, recently divorced, of 48 years, shall be my character, if you are fine with my joining in. He has been obsessed with securing power in the government ever since he was five, when his mother was unable to come over due to newly-imposed immigration restrictions. Senator Stufano is primarily in charge of health care and welfare programs in the nation; he has kept his desire for more liberal immigration secret, as the issue hasn't really been raised much recently.

He relies primarily on his chief of staff, Caroline Plassey. Ms. Plassey's close relationship with Stufano, although according to both purely Platonic, was the reason cited by the Senator's ex-wife for her divorce. Caroline, 29, is a rising star politically, primarily due to her ability to gather information on Senators and candidates. She is somewhat compromising, but only to a point, at which point she grows quite stubborn.

Do I meet the requirements?

General Maximus Tyrus Grandielon IV [ret.] (pronounced Gran-gee-eh-lon), is an eighteenth generation [fill in name of citizens of the nation] who is a diehard patriot and will do anything that he feels is in the best interest of the nation. And what he feels is in the best interest of the nation is eliminating the weak-willed and 'sissy' liberal idealists and replace them with a hard-hitting realist and pragmatist that is not afraid to take action - namely, himself.

Senator Alexander Wilberforce Finisterre, age 34, is just such the 'liberal sissy' that Gradielon hates so much. He has an important seat on some foreign-affairs committee or other, and favours a policy of diplomatic aloofness when it comes to world issues. He is a pacifist through and through, a rabid environmentalist and a scheming, conniving bastard who speaks well, photographs well and may have been involved in certain illegal dealings to oust political rivals.

It could be a former priest, senator, who is head/important member when it comes to matters of religion.

Also, if I didn't make it clear, my character is heavily important and a commanding force in the control of the military.

I didn't realize we had five... (that is if you include Theao, despite him not confirming whether he was in or not). I guess that wouldn't be terrible. I would say one more (meaning six total) would be good. That way we could say that the other six were either the less important or minor senators.

@ DMG: Something romaneque and having a generational marker at the end of it. (i.e II, IV etc.)

Overall, we've all been making up statistics as we go. If we keep doing that, the whole 'debate' end of things is going to fall apart pretty quickly. So here's what I'm thinking. Whenever we need a new pile of numbers, we submit the request to Geneticon. Since he's the 'voice of the people' in addition to his senator, we'll just have to trust that he's going to be objective. It might slow down the pace of RP a bit, but I don't see that as a huge drawback.

Else, I can easily see the RP becoming 'he who invents statistics best, wins'. We can do that, but it won't be much of a debate.

He was once accused of violating rules of engagement when directing an evacuation of an embassy on foreign soil that had reportedly been surrounded by an angry mob of protestors that people thought might soon turn deadly. (Prior to being elected senator)

He ordered martial law be installed after the terrorist bombing of three separate buses in Preoc. It was under a security clause of the constitution and therefore bypassed the senate. (Prior to being elected senator)

He directed the naval defense of Preoc's neighbor against a nation from across the sea. Due to his decision to act in defense of the neighboring nation, the other nation broke trade ties to Preoc.

This RP is going very slowly. Over a month long so far and only 27 posts... (less than a post a day).

Yes... a lot of that is because Beltway is really busy... at least I get that impression. Please be patient, I'm sure it will pick up speed when he gets back. And the writing has been really good so far, making the posts a lot more in depth... so really we're pretty far along.

I will be patient and give it time, however, I will soon become sporradic in my access to NationStates.

For the next two weeks I have finals. Then a week and a half later I am going to be out of town for a week. I will come back for four days and then be out of town for a week again.

I will be as well... we'll take this RP slow... it's that kind.

We probably won't be able to finish it till late next school year.

I hope not. Beltway has been gone for a while... maybe he'll be back soon. If not, I will continue this thread sometime next week.

BTW... we need a response from Liam in Francas. No hurry... but after this weekend I will have limited internet until August.

It was a nice beginning and idea for an RP, but seeing as you are leaving tomorrow and then I am leaving next Saturday, I doubt this will sustain.

Probably.

Well... I will try to awaken it when I return in August, if you're up for the challenge of helping me sustain it then.
