It was a sector previously un-known to the Republic, but no more. In a brilliant flash of light which lit up the dark void for a break moment, the Republican Legion Primigenia slid into the system.
Aboard the Imperial class battle cruiser Defiance, flagship for the Legion, the crew were busily going about their tasks. The many computers within the bridge beeped and hummed as their operators fiddled with the controls, carrying out their orders. Admiral Manius moved down the catwalk towards the front of the ship, observing the men below him as they went about their tasks.
"Admiral," one of the officers said after a salute, "Our scans have picked up one planet within the system capable of sustaining life. We have set a course for the planet now."
"Were any sings of technology picked up?"
"There appears to be a rather heavy storm around the small planet, sir, interfeering with our sensors. Nothing orbiting the planet however, sir."
Manius nodded and the officer went back to work. He carried on over the catwalk towards the large observation windows at the front and peered out at the planet that began to increase in size as they approached it. Looking to the sides, he noticed also his ten other vessels under his command, the make up of Primigenia. He wondered if he would need all of that, but you could never bee to prepared in this universe, and it was a chance for the long dormant force to stretch its legs.

Commander, we have in intrusion in the Roanoke System
What does the sensor grid show?
About a dozen unknown ships. They are approaching the colony world.
Dammit, what happened to the Quarantine Markers?
I am not sure Sir, they show as being online but apparently the ion storm around the old colony world has caused some sort of malfunction.
Keep an eye upon the situation. Call for an Interceptor to get there but remain Uplifted in T-Space until we are sure of their intentions.
Shortly within T-Space, the black angular craft slid into the system, surrounded by the purple mists of Dimensional Space. Once it achieved an orbital position where the old colony world would be, it came to a full stop and waited.
OOC: T-Space is the 7th dimension.

A microscopic panel powered up on the slightly larger Federal Monitoring Network sattelite, GSDSAT Type FMN IX. The small beacon, no larger than an ancient thumbtack, slowly spun through the cold void of space, masked in a gravitational spatial distortion field. Appearing from the outside to be normal space, the listening post remained concealed in the fabric of the universe.

A yellow light began to flash on the hologram of Federal Space, somewhere within the Buffer Zone. A second later, the light turned red. The hologram spun lazily in the center of a spherical command room. Cavernous, the entire room was 200 yards in diameter. Tier upon tier of stations were built around the hologram. Hundreds of military personnel monitored thousands of systems from their consoles, checking for any hostile or otherwise foreign instrusion into Federal space.
Whoever was monitoring the system in which the probe which had detected the instrusion was located had immediately hit the Alarm Klaxon once the probe confirmed a military incursion. A shrill, modulating whine pierced the room, alerting everyone who hadn't seen the information displayed on the Holoprojection to the impending crisis.
The grayish-white automatic doors at the 'rear' of the command center opened silently to admit Admiral Zimmerman into the madness which had broken out. Excited chatter filled the room as hundreds of voices shouted orders, read out reports, communicated with other agencies, or communicated in any form with anyone who had to be informed of the situation.
As the Admiral passed a station near the walkway, he overheard a Leftenant speaking with someone at High Command. "... Unauthorized military incursion within system OBZS-11932P, Galaktischer Kern Sector. Dispatching interception fleet. Requesting temporary control of Flotte-Befehl and accompanying fleet..."
Zimmerman gave an approving nod to the the officer as he passed by. Finally arriving at his command chair, he spun it around to face the holoprojection and the accompanying readouts which floated across the virtual stars. His team was responding very quickly and efficiently, much more so than had Myternian Sector Command during the Kaluza/Thorn incident.
As far as he could tell, he had nothing to do. The station's staff was following protocol to the letter. Every jot and tiddle. The Admiral sat back and read all the reports flashing across his chair's holoscreen, waiting for some error to correct.
---------------------------------
A bright flash of light appeared out of nowhere, and as the energy abated, a massive fleet appeared.
Numbering some four-hundred and one ships, the armada looked something of a work of art; patterns of light reflected off the curved hulls, bright gleaming prows cut through the emptiness of space. Something about this fleet, however, would shock most intruders: The smaller ships were arrayed about an enormous construct: The Flotte-Befehl.
The Fleet-Base. Aptly named, should any Federal Admiral be asked, for the ships were 200 miles in length. Indeed, they could hold within their bowels the entire fleet that accompanied them. Bristling with QSD batteries, Particle Cannons, Torpedoe tubes, PPCs, Temporal Erasure Wave Generators, and numerous other deadly weapons systems.
Almost immediately after de-Folding, the entire fleet had raised Energy and Phase shields, holding off on other, more powerful, defensive systems.
In an act reminiscient of another territorial dispute, the massive command vessel generated a primitive radio signal, as the forms of communication used by the UFGZ would probably be uncompatible with this unknown force.
Simple, but belligerent in nature, the message simply stated,
"Attention intruding vessels: This system is incorporated within the Federal Buffer Zone, Galactischer Kern Sector Command. Your vessels will vacate the system immediately. Any movement further from the galactic core will enter Federal Space. Any further intrusion deeper into Federal Territory will be considered an act of war and dealt with accordingly. You have thirty minutes."
Back at Sector Command, Admiral Zimmerman sat and hoped they would simply leave, whoever they were, and would not turn this into an 'incident.'

It can work either way. The Roanoke System contained a colony world of mine that everyone dissappeared a couple centuries ago. There was no sign of what happened other than a large burn mark and a strange pathway crushed through the forests of the planet as if something massive rolled through it pushing aside the large trees as if they were toothpicks. The path led right through the center of the colony. We lost 90 men, 17 women, and 9 children. From the air, the pattern can be digitally analyzed to form a single word of mysterious meaning....
Croatan
For this reason, we decided to quarentine the planet and placed markers in the orbit of the planet. A receint ion storm formed and smothered the signal even though they are still transmitting (susposedly).
If you want this to be the same system (claimed but unoccupied) then we can determine the legality of it over the conference table.
I used this as one of my tests for the ESUS about Sept '04 but really haven't mentioned it as part of the Empire on NS. I can post the whole story if you wish to read it for entertainment purposes but I was planning on disclosing the facts as part of the RP later.
I think we should both accidently and unknowingly (until this moment) claim Roanoke as our own. This doesn't mean we need to fight over it, just as a reason to interact as nations for once.

Hmmm... Well, as Federal territory expanded, so did the Buffer Zone. So we'll go under the assumption this system was just recently marked and incorporated. Say, three centuries ago?
P'raps the Quarantine markers failed quite a while ago.
Alas, this shall make out much more like the Thorn/Kaluza incident. How fun.
And maybe, for once, we won't end up on opposite sides of a battle. Alrighty.

(OOC: Hahahaha! You'll have to be faster than that when we do fight.:p Hey Blarogga, wanna have a ground skirmish? I figure it will be fun if we're both trying to take some important territory on the small planet, say like a field or forest or something. With the storm, it will make it difficult to co-ordinate with our troops, and we can have accidents that make it even more difficult. Nothing big, just a skirmish of about a thousand troops top, with armour and artillery of course, and air support. Cool?)
IC:
All departing personel report to the main hanger. Repeat. Al departing personel report to the main hanger.
The voice rang over the comm systems of the Victory class frigate Spartan V, making the un-interested men of the company look up at the ceiling momentarily. By orders of Admiral Manius, a company was to go down towards the planet, land, asses the situation and report in within twelve hours.
The transport shook as it entered the atmosphere of the planet, the hull glowing a dull red on its descent. It was a fearce storm they were entering, reminded them of Taledonia, though it was easy to ignore the effects of a storm thanks to all the things set up on the planet, who knows if they could even communicate with the fleet in this thing. Dark clouds covered every inch of the sky, lit only by lightning and booming with thunder. It was a two hour trip before the shuttle cleared the clouds and landed in what appeared to be a forest clearing, surrounded by high pines.
Tribune Gaditicus waited till the doors of the shuttle opened, then grabbed his helmet and secured it on his head. "My squad to disembark!" he yelled. Standing, he walked out of the transport, followed by two columns of five men each. Imperial Shocktroopers, all dressed in grey and armed with blaster rifles and plasma pistols, their helmets making them look more like machines, nameless killers ready to go through anything.
"Secure the area!" barked Gaditicus.
His men broke the lines, and began taking aim at the trees around them as they moved closer to the edge of the clearing, assessing the area and assuring it was clear of any hostiles that might be there. The Tribune looked around through his helmet, the scanners jumping around as he looked, taking in every little thing and giving a brief analisys.
"All clear!"

Galaktischer Kern Sector Command
"ADMIRAL," a female voice screamed from an upper level. A second later a woman's face, presumably the woman who just yelled, appeared on the Admiral's armrest holoscreen. "Admiral, intruders have landed on the planet. They have ignored our warning to leave the system."
Zimmerman sat for a moment, stroking his goatee in contemplation. A half-minute went by, and the woman, a Petty Officer, by her shoulder insignia, grew impatient. "Sir?"
The Admiral faced her, stared her down through the screen. "Fire a warning shot. Destroy their landing party, then re-issue a message informing them that any further action will be taken as an act of war, unless they vacate the system."
"Sir, isn't that going to incite them even more?"
The Admiral quickly reviewed his decision. "It might. But they cannot match us with eleven ships. They were warned, and now they will be warned again. Hopefully they will steer clear of this area again in the future."
He could see through the screen as she reached to cut off the feed, when Zimmerman added one more thing. "Oh, and, instruct the Verpflichtung to investigate a gravitational distortion that appeared in-system a short while ago."
"Ja Wohl," the woman saluted as she cut the transmission.
-------------------------------
The enormous Flotte-Befehl, the Verpflichtung, turned her starboard toward the planet, as an ancient Ship-Of-The-Line would turn for a broadside. At about the middle of the lateral line of the ship, a section of the bulkhead slid into the surrounding hullplates. A large emitter extended itself out of the ship. Resembling an ancient artillery barrel, the opening boasted a 33.33 yard diameter. Within the barrel, an eerie red glow began to form. This particular Particle Cannon was the weakest of the three types, as the long-wavelengthed red-light indicated. However, it was good for charring a large swath of land in planetary bombardment.
As there were no real reference marks in the void of space, the beam seemed to stretch out slowly, as though Hades was in no hurry to claim souls for the Underworld. In reality, the beam travelled at the speed of light. In a few seconds, it had entered the atmosphere. It was likely that the men on the planet had never realized what happened.
Verpflichtung Command Bridge
Commodore Huzren stood, hands clasped together behind his back, in the center of his bridge. At personal attention, his shoulders forced back and head high, he oversaw his officers' stations at their consoles on the Bridge level below him.
He had instructed the Chief Science Officer to run a gravimetric analysis of the distortion that Sector Command had detected in-system. So far it had been confined to one dimension, however, an exact location or description remained elusive. Whether it was natural, a ship, or some other unknown phenomenon had yet to be seen. Therefore, until anything developed, gravimetric scanners would remain on high alert, as would all other systems.
With the particle cannon having already fired, Huzren had drawn his body taught, awaiting the response of the unknown fleet to the attack on their landing party. Although he hoped they would retreat, a part of the Commodore secretly longed for battle. There really wasn't any spice to military life, at least, there wouldn't be until an engagement with the IRF. Until then, the long stretches of patrols could make a Combat-officer a bit anxious.
"Have they responded yet," questioned the Commodore.
His XO called back from the level beneath him. "No sir, not yet. They're probably still trying to contact their team. We're sending them another message now."
"Understood. Send when ready."

Taledonia, just because I fired the cannon doesn't mean it killed anyone. P'raps you have shields of some sort, or whatever it was that saved them. It's up to you to decide what happens.
And yes, Federal Sensors can detect the landing party through the storm... (Everything makes a gravitational distortion.)

T-Space:
Commander, the intruders have broken quarantine. They have landed troops upon the planet close to the settlement ruins.
Dammit, there is no going back now.
Sir, there is more. Another force appeared. The Germanische Zustande has sent… about 200 ships according to our readings. They also brought some sort of behemoth that is over 300 kilometers long.
What are they up to? They seem to be out of their borders.
They are broadcasting some sort of ultimatum to the other fleet. Relaying it to you Sir.
Moments later the message played for the Commander.
Well, that is very nice of them to protect our system from intrusion. Too bad they think it is theirs.
Commander, what are my Orders, Sir?
Stand down and monitor the situation. I will send a battlegroup to assist you. Remain hidden in T-Space. If anyone who lands on the planet tries to leave, I want them destroyed. Nobody leaves Roanoke. Reinforcements will be there within the hour.
Sir, we have detected weapons fire. One of the ships has fired upon the landing party. The results are unknown. We are also receiving increased gravitational scans of the area.
Go into Deep Stealth Mode. I will inform the reinforcements to enter the system under full stealth. For the time being, let them take care of each ot

"God damnit!" swore Manius, "How the hell could our systems have been corrupted by the storm!?"
"I don't know, sir, but we've lost our communications and we can't move. Our scanners are out too."
"Well get the systems working again, didn't you say a transmission was comming in before we entered orbit of the planet?"
"Don't know sir, could've just been a glitch..."
On the planet, the thirty Shocktroopers turned in shock as their shuttle was ripped to shreads. "By the Gods!" said one of them, "If we hadn't began to move into the woods, we'd of been taken out as well."
"Well without that ship we can't contact the fleet, not that it would matter with this storm a raging. Let's keep moving, form up into a column, we need to find some cover and prepare for when whatever took out our ship arrives. Grab whatever supplies is still in one piece."

A little background info.
We haven't been on the planet in hundreds of years after the colony dissappeared. We kept it pristine as a memorial to their dissappearance. That is why we will not allow anyone on it. Like trying to build a condo in Arlington National Cemetary...
Eventually you would come to an area where the ancient trees give way to a line of old trees about a hundred meters wide. This trail leads deeper into the woods in one direction and through the center of the colony (flatened), across a lake and into the woods on the other side.
