Arbeiterriech City, Arbeiterreich: The Ministerium der Verteidigung (Ministry of Defence) of the People's Republic of Arbeiterreich today announced large planned expansions of the military as part of the state-developed five year plan to encourage growth in the economy.
The MdV announced an increase of total military personnel, including fighting and logistical personnel from both the Active Armed Forces and the Reserve Armed Forces, from 250,000 to a total of 700,000 enlisted military personnel. Vehicle Construction sees two types of planned APC/ICVs, several new naval vessels, fighter aircraft and the introduction of T-62 MBTs to the Rote Armee.
In terms of military might, this increases the total fighting personnel of the Active Armed Forces to 57,350 enlisted. Logistical Personnel has increased to over 190,000.
The Reserve Forces, which ordinarily are stood down and only practice maneuvers once a fortnight, have seen the largest increase, from 150,000 enlisted personnel to a massive 450,000 enlisted personnel, with roughly 120,000 being fighting personnel and the remaining being non-combat logistical support personnel.
A spokesman for the MdV was quick to criticise any comment that this increase in enlistment will negatively affect the economy of the PRA. "The increase in our Active Forces is along the lines of our population growth rate," one person assured us. "The Reserves are where the largest increase are, but they continue in their working lives and are only called into service in the time of war."
The increases in the military are expected by many analysts to be partly routine, but also partly due to the increasing tensions between several Communist and non-Communist governments on the International Stage. Frederick Taylor, an independent military analyst, said that this was to be expected. "As the PRA comes onto the world stage," he explained, "they are going to start seeing how much of the world is Anti-Communist. I believe this is largely for their own defence, as the PRA does not have the capacity to deliver massive amounts of troops and combat vehicles beyond its shores."
This analysis was backed up by several other analysts. The PRA currently has the ability to transport a maximum of 30,000 infantry, and the comparative number in combat vehicles at any one time. However, some analysts have questioned whether this limited increase in transport capacity, along with a general increase in combat capacity, may foreshadow foreign involvement as a lesser partner in Coalition invasions.
