A New Decade of Social Strengthening

Veltmeria

Office of the President of the People's Socialist Republic of Veltmeria
20:41, January 5th 1990

Hosekov Vlagishimoshov looked down at the sheet of paper in front of him anxiously. He had all reason to do so: he was facing the biggest political crisis of his life. The Eastern Bloc was disintegrating - Poland, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia and Romania had thrown off their Communist governments and elections were sweeping the region, removing the old school of leaders from power. His old friend Ceaucescu had meet a violent end only a week ago and Bulgaria looked almost certain to crumble under the pressure from the subversives and counter-revolutionaries. Despite his government's tight stranglehold on power, the news was filtering through and reports of civil unrest, riots, strikes and an increasing death toll fell onto his desk on a daily basis. Decisive action had to have been taken to stop the rot before it destroyed the very institutions he'd spent the last thirty year to build.

"Workers of our great Republic, to attention! Our brave and glorious leader is due to speak!" Radios and televisions around the country crackled, "This is a message of great importance to our ideology, our cause and our sovereignity! To victory, Workers!"

At that point, all eyes and ears were focused on the President.

"Friends, Workers, Countrymen. Some of you may be aware of the events transpiring around the region. The large of amounts of filth and deviance thrown at our way of life by the capitalist West has managed to seep in. As I speak, our common friends and allies are fighting vigorously to keep the degraded concepts of bourgeois capitalism out of their beloved lands. Now we must do the same with greater purpose, greater enthusiasm and greater dignity, for it is we who have the most to lose. In order to protect you and your fellow Workers from being subjugated by the CIA and their corrupt partners, I will be introducing a new bill to Parliament. This act will provide for the security and safety of our people. As the terrorist cause grows evermore, the bill shall establish a dedicated fighting force to confronting this menace head-on: the Veltmerian Revolutionary Guards Corps, to be composed of the finest the Veltmerian National People's Military Forces has to offer as well as the extension of powers to the police to give them the resources necessary to crush the counter-revolutionary enemies. The CIA bandits have infiltrated our most hallowed media institutions; to weed out the scum, greater strengthening of quality control laws will be introduced to ensure that propaganda remains out of the newspapers and overseas agents stay out of our newsrooms. They slowly seep into our great nation through our porous borders, leading us to temporarily seal the national border with no exceptions. Those already inside the country must be re-taught in the ways of the Manifesto; new labour camps will be built to re-educate and re-enlighten those with questionable alliances, those who are not behind our great cause. To aid our revolutionary brothers in the region, we will increase our funding to pro-Communist groups and individuals and allow armed groups bringing the doctrine to the masses to shelter and train in our country. To ensure our continued security all the way up to the Executive level, we will amalgamate all the ministries into three central ministries: the Internal Ministry, the External Ministry and the Security Ministry as well the temporary revocation of certain privileges granted in the Greater Responsibility To The Workers Act of 1977. Finally, for the people of Veltmeria to remain unwavering in the face of danger, new programmes will be established and funding promoting more respect, more love and more loyalty to the Government, it's leaders and those who have shaped this country into the paradise we enjoy today.

Many may be worried about this turn of events but, thirty years ago when you elected me into power, I gave you my word of honour I would protect you in any way I could and how I could see fit. These measures are designed with you, the Worker, in mind to protect, serve and provide you. With this resolution, you can be assured that you will be able to sleep peacefully in your beds for years to come.

Long live our Republic."

With that, his image and voice disappeared from the nation. All was back to normal, for now.
