Politics in Modern Russia
After the collapse of the socialist regime after World War Three, the LTA forces installed a provisional Russian government headed by Alexei Nikolaevich Romanov who had the unique distinction of being the legitimate heir to the Russian Imperial Throne and a major force in the exiled Russian community. Once order had been established in Russia, a new constitution was ratified by the provisional government that, which after heavy-handed political maneuvering by Alexei, saw the establishment of a Republic government with a strong executive branch. While several political parties remain banned in Russia, for the most part the country remains politically free and voter turnout high. While socialism remains a powerful force in Russia, the centralist party, United Russia dominates current political life in Russia.

Prime Minister Alexei Romanov announced a new round of military expansion in the face of huge protests around the nation. PM Romanov however remained strong attempted to play on Russian nationalism and isolationism, "Russia cannot remain dependent on outside forces to protect itself. If Russia must protect itself, it cannot rely on other parties that can leave at any time but only on itself and its traditions!"

In other news the Party of Russia's Rebirth (Partiya Vozrozhdeniya Rossii) and Motherland Patriotic Union (Rodina Patrioticheskiy Soyuz) announced the creation of the National Socialist Russian Workers Party, a union which has created the second largest single party, only forty seats behind United Russia whose coalition currently controls the Duma. While the new party has yet to state whether or not they plan to support the current ruling government, representatives of United Russia and its allies have already begun courting the members of this new party.

Interfax News International Report

With elections coming to a close all across the nation in this hotly contested Duma race, only one thing is for certain: The National Socialist Russian Workers Party is sweeping elections. With a tough line demanding the seizing of the land lost to the Scandinavian Union and to China after the Third World War, while advocating higher government aid to the disabled, they seemed to have a stricken a cord with the people of Russia and are expected to gain nearly 78 seats, eight more than the former controlling party United Russia.

Final Duma Statistics:
Party – Seats
United Russia – 173
National Socialist Russian Workers Party – 181
Socialist Party of Russia – 120
Christian Russia – 73
Union of Workers Party – 34
Party for the Restoration of the Union (BANNED) – 17
Free Siberia - 5
Various Other Parties - 25

In a move that took most political experts in Russia by surprise, several members of the Christian Russia Party announced they were joining Central Russia in a move that one Christian Russia Party member said was in response to the strong resurgence of the National Socialist Russian Workers Party in the elections. With this mass defection, Central Russia has a slim majority of only five over the NSRWP. However, most political analysts agree that unless the NSRWP forges a deal with one another Party, something they seem to refuse doing, Central Russia should have enough seats to push its agenda through.

Prime Minister Romanov anounced today that a non-agression pact had been signed with Syria. This is seen as a major step towards moving Russia into a new era of politics as Russia finally begins to engage in dialogue with former MEU territories.

He also announced that Russia would remain neutral in the event of a war between Germany and the SU. Massive riots have rocked most major cities in response to this as thousands of anti-SU protestors took to the streets and battled police and protestors calling for a neutrality in all future conflicts.

United Russia – 196 (+22)
National Socialist Russian Workers Party – 131 (-50)
Socialist Party of Russia – 132 (+11)
Christian Russia – 90 (+31)
Union of Workers Party – 37 (+3)

Free Belarus – 10 (+9)
Various Other Parties – 19 (-6)

Coalition Partners (Seats)
United Russia / Christian Russia / Various Parties (290)
Socialist Party of Russia / Union of Workers / Various Parties (171)

Pacifists in the Christian Russia and United Russia Parties made up the majority of the gains while the NSRWP took heavy losses after pacifist rallies swept the nation demanding a peaceful solution to the St. Petersburg issue. In should be noted that the Free Belarus party, normally receiving only one vote if that, received an impressive 9 vote gain as Belarusian independence has become a hot issue in Russia. United Russia maintains its lead with 196 seats allowing it and its coalition partner, Christian Russia, to maintain majority of the votes. Some critics are calling foul however as PRU leaders claim that in many area’s, NSRWP supporters attacked voters that they believed to be PRU supporters. While the government has yet to comment on these claims, sources within the government say that no investigation of the claims will be initiated.

Prime Minister Romanov announced that in response to the UN vote held in Belarus, Russia has begun planning a program designed to grant Belarus independence in a resonable time frame while limiting the impact both on Belarus and Russia. While the plans have yet to be announced, Prime Minister Romanov is said to have invited several members of the Free Belarus party on to the committee designed to ease the transition of Belarus into an independent state.
