Religious Freedom or Counter-Revolution? (MT OPEN)

Orleia

Location: Levenizgrad (newly renamed Capital of the People's Republic of Orleia.)
Time: 12:45 P.M. (Orleian Standard Time)

The Red Palace……

The Premier Yuri Leveniz, The father and hero of the Revolution, was sitting in his ceremonial armchair at the head of the table that held all the meetings of the Politburo. The Premier and the various Directors of the Party were discussing what should be done about the various religious organizations within the People's Republic of Orleia. Most of the Directors were all in favor of banning all religious practices in Orleia. The arguments for why and how were varied however and that needed to be settled.

The Political Director of the Party Roger Samson said, "The fact remains Religion is just another way for the corrupt and oppressive fascist governments to control the masses. They make the people and workers believe that some God will reward their efforts of worship and prayer in the afterlife. Religion is also one of the number one reason why workers and peasants in the past have suffered quite heavily. From Religious practices meant to save people's souls like the Spanish inquisition in which countless people which were called heretics for their personal beliefs were brutally tortured and killed just to appease God and to have him forgive their sins. To the infamous Crusades and Jihad's that were used to justify countless feudal lords forcing workers and peasants to join their armies to fight in brutal and deadly holy wars. Religion should be considered a counter-revolutionary theory."

The Internal Director of the Party Carl Sinclair replied, "This is outrageous, if we start to arrest and re-educate the local clergy. We will be seen as another corrupt dictatorship that is trying to purge its people. The workers and citizens of the People's Republic have a right to worship if they wish. The People's Republic should not try to silence and oppress the rights of the People just to protect them from the possible suggestion of a counter-Revolutionary theory. Religion can cause a feeling of unity and togetherness. We can harness that to keep the People and the principles of the Revolution together."

The Five Star People's General Joseph Krostiniv said his opinion, "I believe religion is an excuse for terrorists and other fanatical types to commit violent acts against the Party and the workers. I believe we should order the Orleian Revolutionary Guard to begin systematic elimination of these evil and oppressive Religious organizations within our great nation. We could go from town to town across the Republic's countryside mass eliminating the clergy and destroying their homes and begin arresting their families and friends. It would serve as a great warning to those that challenge the will of the People and the Party and the People's Republic."

The People's Intelligence Director George Boreman said, "I think we should just use the Red Network to watch these religious leaders and make the ones that we consider a major threat of counter-revolutionary actions "disappear." This would be cheaper to do rather than a massive military mobilization across the countryside and it would definitely be easier to hide from the rest of the world. The People will be safe from political corruption and we could get new recruits for our more dangerous industries."

Premier Yuri Leveniz realized the final decision would be his. The Politburo was divided on the issue and they could not think of a solution that was for the best of the people. They all turned to the boss and waited for his final and set decision.

The Premier waited for a little bit and finally after several minutes said, "It seems that all sides have good points. I however believe that religion tends to lead to more conflict and violence in the world than it ever has with bringing unity to a people. I therefore have decided that all Religious practices should be banned from the People's Republic of Orleia. This is for the good of the People and the Revolution and Motherland."

The Politburo Directors all nodded and the Five Star People's General asked, "Sir, What is to be done with the Clergy and their followers?"

The Premier Yuri Leveniz responded quickly, "The Orleian Red Police are to deal with the Religious criminals. They will receive orders to arrest any member of any religion within the borders of the People's Republic of Orleia. This revolutionary law will be enacted as soon as possible. I also want the People's Intelligence Bureau to begin using the Red Network to infiltrate known religious groups. This will help in capturing these enemies of the Revolution."

The Politburo members nodded in unison and stood from their chairs. They all left the room leaving Premier Yuri alone to think about his decision.

Five Days later in the town of Borkin….

Reverend George Murphy was in the middle of his sermon that he gave to the people of Borkin on every Sunday. The Church door was suddenly kicked in and twenty Orleian Red Police Officers ran inside armed with AK-47's and wearing their dreaded military style uniforms with the hammer and sickle armbands that were on their right shoulders.

The Police Sargent of the raid ordered the entrances and exits to be secured immediately. The church's gathering was trapped almost immediately and the fear in the crowds' faces was greatly noticeable.

The Police Sargent walked up next to the Reverend and addressed the people, "People of Borkin! The Party has hereby announced that all religious organizations are counter-revolutionary to the goals of the people and the revolution. They are henceforth banned from the motherland! The Clergy and all of those associated with them are declared Counter-Revolutionaries."

Upon that four Orleian Red Police Officers literally jump upon Reverend George Murphy. They hit him over the head with the butt of one their AK-47's. The Police Officers then kicked him while he was on the ground. After a few seconds of this beating one of them put cuffed him behind his back and dragged him out of the Church towards one of their patrol vehicles.

The crowd was in utter shock and surprise no one had expected such a brutal arrest but they knew that counter-revolutionaries were dangerous to the health of the People and the Revolution and the Motherland and that was enough to keep them from trying to stop the officers.

The Police Sargent then adds, "This place of corruption and exploitation shall be burned along with the symbols and literature of those that would seek to enslave the proletariat!"

The Crowd cheered and they immediately left the area to avoid the officer's attention as they started to set the church on fire. The fire department was already ready to put out the blazing inferno once the Church was destroyed.

Across the People's Republic of Orleia this kind of sight had become quite common as all over the Orleian Red Police Force began to crack down on religious opponents. They would be sent to the many Prisons and Gulags across Orleia as they prepared to have their individual trials which would determine their fate.

7:00 AM. The Imperial Palace shone with the first glimpses of dawn, animals and birds awakening around it. Elite soldiers patrolled the walls.

The Supreme General's Advisor, Eric Arsco, viewed the new information from the International Monitoring Program. Sipping his cofee, he noticed a new edict in Orleia.Banning religion? Pfft. We'll see about that! He noticed that people were being jailed for it. A definite human rights violation...

wAt 8:00AM, the Supreme General Khonsu Izakabad awoke. After breakfast, the advisor came to him. "Sir, we have a situation here. Some wacko government is banning religion."

"Hmm? Contact them, and ask what's going on. Offer to take these people to our nation, and tell them to stop with this foolishness."

"Yes sir."

Re: Perhaps you have went... too far.

Text:

Pythogria believes that your policy of arresting people for holding religious beliefs is a violation of human rights, and wishes to correct this. If you do not want religion in your nation, we ask that you give these people to us. Though Pythogria has no official religion (and 64.75% of our population is athiest) we believe religion and beliefs are, within reason, a right. We wish not to threaten you, and we mean this as a gesture of peace. Should you accept this, Pythogria will send ships. You may inspect them in international waters, and they may be closelyt monitored. No Pythogrian soldier will be on-board these ships, other than a complketely unarmed crew.

Wishing to end this,

The morning briefing was the usual for the Emperor. Nuclear tests in Hayord. Ethnic discrimination in Wolfensland. The world was its usual hell-hole. Then an envelope entitled 'Orleia' was uncovered in the clutter on the desk.

The Emperor read through it, sipping his morning coffee.

Figures. Another nation outlawing religion and violating human rights in the process.

"Billy, get in here!"

An aide rushed in.

"Yes, your Imperial Majesty?"
"Get me all the info you can on a country called... Orleia. Everything you can find."
"Of course."

He quickly rushed out to his office to begin searching for any and all info on the nation.

Reverend George Murphy was in the near end of his trial. The People's Judicial System was totally under the Party's control. The Judge, Jury and Prosecutor were all members of the Party. The Reverend was not even allowed a defense attorney. The People's law had declared him a major Counter-Revolutionary a serious offense in the Communist run nation of Orleia.

The Judge a Party member by the name of Comrade Judge Fernando Ortega. The Judge looked over the case and said, "Mr. George Murphy, Your case is not valid saying you were preaching God's will to the people. As far as the People are concerned God does not exist! You also claim you are loyal to the motherland yet you preach about service to a lord! Mr. Murphy we are no one's slaves you got that!"

The Jury just glared at Reverend Murphy this was one hell of a bad day for him. The Jury upon sentencing stood up and said, "We find the Defendant Guilty of all accounts of the following:

Starting a Counter-Revolution amongst the innocent workers.
Being a Counter-Revolutionary.
Practicing worship to a false deity that does not exist.
Practicing a form of illegal worship and belief."

The Judge said, "Mr. Murphy you are hence forth sentenced to a life sentence of working in the northeastern Gulag for the rest of your natural days. This is without possibility of parole."

The Prosecutor said, "However, Mr. Murphy you can choose life of exile instead. This would be permanent and any return to Orleia would be a one way trip to the Gulag."

The Reverend said, "I choose to leave and say goodbye to my Motherland."

The Judge replied, "You really don't have the spirit of the revolution you hide behind Imperialist nations to save your skin. May you rot in those oppressive and evil nations!"

The two Police Officers grabbed him and dragged him back to his cell were they beat him until he fainted from the brutal beating. One of them spits on this Counter-Revolutionary as they head out of the cell…..

"Religion banned....brutal arrests...burnings of religious buildings...gulags..." he muttered. The list went on and on. After he finished, he crumpled up the paper and threw it into the trash out of anger. He ran his hand through his hair, fustrated. "What do you want to do, sir?" Smith asked.

"They do have sovereignty as a nation, that's true. But this...this is cruel, its against everything right. These poor men trying to lead the people of their churches, their synagouges, their mosques, their temples...beaten...arrested. Its enough to make you want to take hostile action. But that would be impractical and unnecessary. We must do something though. Smith, you may leave, I have an important call to make." John explained. As Smith left, John began to call Premier Yuri Leveniz. He had a few things to say to the man.

Premier Yuri Leveniz responds, "Religion is just a way for Imperialist and exploitative Capitalist governments to justify their right to rule over the proletariat. These examples can be seen through out history. The Kings that ruled France did so by using the phrase divine right until the people took up the noble cry of revolution and freedom. The ancient Roman Emperors used to even have the audacity to proclaim themselves gods. The fact remains religion teaches people to submit to oppressive and sometimes-brutal tyrants for the hope that God will reward you later. The fact remains that is not a proven theory and if God does not exist those poor people lost their freedom and right to happiness because some people came up with a way to form superstitious beliefs into a tool of oppression and enslavement. That alone is enough to be considered a crime agaisnt the people and the ideals of the Revolution."
