The Holy Crusader’s Empire of Materdei is an extremely conservative, Christian state which claims its heritage from the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire). It’s Emperor, the Basileus, is the supreme ruler of the nation. The Emperor is the head of the empire’s diplomatic, domestic, and militaristic affairs. The Emperor is however, advised by the Imperial Senate, which the citizens elect to support the Basileus every six years. The Imperial Senate debates and passes legislation which is then forwarded to the Emperor who may either veto it, or pass it as an Imperial Decree (which then becomes law). The Emperor is not limited to the Imperial Senate and may make Imperial Decrees of his own, and is further granted superiority over the Senate by being able to appoint Senators at will and demote Senators if found guilty of crime.
The Basileus is also advised by the Patriarch of the Church of Saint Constantine, who is the religious head of the empire. There is seldom conflict between the Patriarch and the Emperor due to the fact that the Emperor rules the empire by Divine Right. Thus the Patriarch as the religious head is but a symbolic figure in which the Christian state rallies around.
