Reasons for Development
While the aircraft carrier has long functioned as the backbone of DC Naval force projection, it has always been abundantly clear that traditional carrier designs are more easily damaged to the point of combat ineffectiveness then other types of surface vessels. The exposed flight deck of most modern carriers presents an available target to aircraft and guided missiles, with a number of vulnerable components relatively unarmoured and easily disabled or destroyed by hostile munitions. Even without the aid of precision munitions, the exposed flight deck of the modern carrier can easily be rendered unusable by the formation of breaches and craters caused by even a light level of hostile shelling.

In order to better protect the flight deck of the aircraft carrier, and thus better preserve its operability during and after combat, the Tempora Heroica Class Carrier was designed with internalized flight decks, with the traditionally vulnerable flight decks placed within the ship, and covered by layers of armour and other decks. The Tempora Heroica was originally based on the design of the currently in service Pax Magellanic (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=418345) Class Aircraft Carrier, and thus the two classes share a number of similarities. While internalized flight deck design of the Tempora Heroica has a number of drawbacks, its advantages are also numerous.


Tempora Heroica Class Aircraft Carrier: In Depth

Aircraft Launching and Landing from Internalized flight Deck
Aircraft launch and landing ports have been installed fore and aft, respectively, with each port stretching the entire width of the vessel. The ports have a height of eight metres, which is sufficient for most medium/heavy fighters under shipboard landing control, but is insufficient for most cargo aircraft and airbourne RADAR platforms.

Due to small port opening of eight metres for launch and landing ports, control of both aircraft takeoff and landing has been removed from aircraft pilots, and reassigned to an advanced Nexus III Computer Core, which is superior to the Orion Six Point-Defense Mainframe offered on the Pax Magellanic Export Model. The Nexus III Computer Core, running the latest in autonomic software, is capable of safely piloting an aircraft of six metres or less in height through the landing port with precision that cannot be matched by a human pilot.

APRiL IACC (Autonomic Point-Defense Reaction, Linguistic Interface, Aircraft Coordination and Control) Software
The Nexus III Computer Core controlling aircraft takeoff and landing also has been tasked with the control of the vessel's point-defense network of CIWS and SAM assets, and management of certain automated flight deck equipment. The Nexus III with APRiL IACC software has also largely replaced the traditional Combat Information Centre (CIC), since its advanced linguistic interpretation and generation capabilities, in combination with its battle area management abilities, allow it to coordinate and direct over a thousand aircraft as directed by its shipboard human operators.

Highly Mechanized Flightdecks
In an effort to reduce personnel requirements, the flightdecks of the Tempora Heroica Class were designed to function at as high an efficiency as possible, with as few sailors as possible. As a result, the flight decks feature a large number of high speed cranes, self-guided fuel lines on highly articulate robotic limbs, fast access munitions elevators, and automatic wheeled munitions carriers. These elements, guided by the Nexus III Computer Core, function together to offer a rapid turnaround time, and an intensive maintenance system that augments the abilities of the flight deck crew.

Point Defense Array
All CIWS assets aboard a Tempora Heroica are controlled by the Nexus III Computer Core. In the event of Nexus III failure, CIWS assets must be physically reset and rebooted, after which they may function, although not nearly as effectively, as they will be functioning as individual units as opposed to assets in a coordinated point defense array.

Buckler CIWS Mounts
Utilizes three 25mm, eight barrel Gatling Guns in a "V" type assembly. Upper guns fire explosive rounds with proximity detonation controlled by the Nexus III Computer Core, while the lower gun fires conventional kinetic energy rounds. Effective "kill" distance of 500 metres.

Octuple-Launch Cobalt Sea Phoenix SAM Turrets
A modified version of the Cobalt Phoenix Long Range Air-to-Air Missile, which is an upgraded version of the American AIM-54 Phoenix Air-to-Air Missile. Range of 200 kilometres. Maximum speed of mach 5. Contains a larger explosive warhead then most Air-to-Air missiles, and features a large fragmentation payload, making proximity detonation of the Cobalt Sea Phoenix quite effective.

Each octuple-launch turrent is capable of launching all eight missiles within a four second timespan.

Diplomatic Capablities
The Tempora Heroica features international class diplomatic facilities onboard for treaty negotiations, diplomatic talks, or multinational conferences. The vessels of the Tempora Heroica Class feature a formal conference chamber measuring over 9000 square metres high on the ship's superstructure, with clear, high strength windows providing a dazzling 360 degree view.

In addition, the Forward Observation Lounge is available for the use of diplomats for private discussion, or simple non-formal talks. From the Forward Observation Deck, the ascent of aircraft as they take to the skies from the internalized flight decks is visible, and is said to be quite an impressive sight.

The advantages of holding diplomatic functions onboard a massive military vessel such as a Tempora Heroica should be easily apparent. The security of those involved is assured, and the very environment of the function serves to reinforce the military strength of the host, providing those involved with a tangible example of the host nation's military might.



Points of Note:
(1) The Tempora Heroica Class cannot safely field most AWACS platforms, due to thier size, therefore the Democratic Colonies recommends that,
(1A) the Tempora Heroica Class be used with a more conventional carrier design in order to achieve maximum effectiveness, or,
(1B) blimp based AWACS platforms are utilized. The Tempora Heroica Class may field blimps of even large sizes. The People's Republic of Hurtful Thoughts, in conjunction with the Democratic Colonies, is currently in development of a high performance AWACS blimp.

(2) The Nexus III Computer Core, while highly capable, is not infallible. It is a vertical core that runs up three decks of the vessel, and requires dedicated maintenance. It is recommended that if the Tempora Heroica is ordered with the Nexus III Computer Core, that the utmost care be taken to ensure its safe operation, as its failure will result in stoppage or extreme handicapping in its areas of responsibility.

The following modifications can be conducted by the Passchendale Colonial Fleetyards for the Tempora Heroica Class Internalized Through Deck Aircraft Carrier:
- No installation of Nexus III Computer Core [subtract two billion from export price]

The heavy interceptor cut a path through the stormy ocean sky, bright streaks of flame marking its progress as its triple jet engines propelled it towards its carrier.

"Come on, come on," mumbled the interceptor's pilot as he gently manuvered the ungainly combat aircraft into position.

"APRiL, status check?" asked the pilot said into his radio.

"Lieutenant Mitchel, automated landing lock has been established," replied an artifical feminine voice. Tweaked and modified by speech specialists to sound as soothing and reassuring as possible, the voice was that of the APRiL software package installed on the computer cores of Tempora Heroica Class Carriers all over the DC Navy.

"Automated landing procedure engaged. Flight control automated."

"About goddamned time," said the pilot to his radar officer, who sat in a tandem seat beside him.

"I think the new software update is making things worse," said the radar officer. "I know the weather's bad, but it usually doesn't take that long to get a landing lock."

"Let the techies down in computer core ops handle that," replied the pilot. "As long as APRiL doesn't go all HAL 9000 and try to kill us all, I'm happy."

The two men watched as the aircraft carrier grew closer as the carrier's computer core piloted them in.

"Do you know what's for chow tonight?" asked the pilot.

"I think there's turkey, but - "

The radar officer was interupted by a short, piercing alarm.

"Warning, landing lock lost," said APRiL's soothing, professional voice.

"What the hell! What the hell!" demanded the pilot as he grabbed at his control stick. He jerked the stick backwards and slammed his throttles forwards, but could only stare out at the still nearing carrier as his input had no effect. The aircraft suddenly executed a barrel roll, throwing the world upside down before returning them to thier original position.

"What are you doing? Climb, man! Climb!" screamed the radar officer.

"I don't have control!" shouted the pilot.

"APRiL, you stupid piece of crap! Give me flight control!" he screamed.

The aircraft suddenly took a wild bank to the left as APRiL's soothing voice once again broadcast.

"Critical application error number U88. Stack overflow in memory module GH26. All operations halted - "

"Goddamn it!" shouted the pilot as he punched his control panel, which showed a large block of text against a stark blue background.

"I'm ejecting us!" said the radar officer as he pulled his ejection handle.

The pilot and radar officer were propelled by rockets out of the aircraft as it continued to bank and weave erratically, climbing and diving at nothing at all.

"Goddamn it!" shouted the pilot as his beloved fighter screamed upwards in a straight vertical climb.

"I'm never trusting that goddamned computer again!"

The aircraft dove a few moments later, slamming into the ocean currents and exploding into a massive fireball.

[ OOC: A debate on it started elsewhere, and, despite it's old, I feel I must warn the people before they get it in their face in a war with worse consequences.


Takeoff from such decks would be fine. But landing into anything but a still ship in calm seas would be suicide straight away. Imagine trying to fly a jet fighter into a narrow rectangular slot, rocking up and down, left and right. And with abrupt airflow disruption near that port (due to ship influence). Landing on a flying airliner's wing would be way easier, or just on *anything*, I can't imagine what could be possibly worse suited for landing. This would be like trying to fly a plane right into the back of an off-road truck racing over bumps.
Which a ship, even a very stable one, basically is, only with bumps being a dozen feet high. CATOBAR aircraft landing gear is specially reinforced to handle the hit with the deck.

Perhaps it could handle Harriers with ultimate aerobatics pilots (AI is dumber, it can't feel the incalculable), possibly F-35B (VTOL), still with frequent losses, but not conventional landing planes. VTOL only. Don't try to operate anything else, or you'll just crush most of your airwing. ]
