Malaysian PM Calls out PM Lee

AP-Responding to recent moves by the Straits League, Malaysia's Prime Minister, Abdullah bin Ahmad Badawi issued a statment in The Star calling for PM Lee and the Sultan of Brunei to "knock it off already."

In part, the statement reads:

"Singapore and Brunei's so-called League is a nice little economic coalition....but what they are doing militarily is only going to make things worse. As it is, Malaysia and Singapore have been dependent on each other since 1965. Mr. Lee needs to recognize that without us, his nation, which is nowhere near superpower status, would be much poorer than it is now. He also needs to recognize that we graciously sell his people water to drink. And the Sultan of Brunei? Sabah and Sarawak are bigger than Brunei....

Am I being confrontational? Yes. But only because I am saying what all of Malaysia is saying. Either the 'Straits League' calms down, or we'll make them calm down. Because if they have issues, they should come talk to us as allies (which we are in ASEAN), not go out and spend your people's money on fancy new ships and expect us to be scared.

After all, Mr. Lee, you said so yourself, in so many words-we are brothers, and brothers should not fight."

PM Lee has not been available for comment, though he did say "I am not interested in a confrontation. I am simply interested in the security of the Straits and of Singapore. I would be happy to talk to PM Abdullah, if only to assure him we are not planning otherwise."

Australia wishes to purchase Oil from Malaysia at the current rate of 200,000 Bbl per day. Australia hopes this deal is acceptable.

Malaysia accepts the offer, but worries about whether the deal will put them in jeopardy with American and European interests. To that end, Malaysia asks what assurances can we have that Australian-Malaysian Commerce will not become a liability.

Landmark agreement hammered out with Malaysia!

PM Lee today announced he has signed an agreement with HRH Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei and PM Abdullah of Malaysia concretely pledging to "keep peace without use of force."

The agreement calls for a 25-year extension on Singapore's right to buy water from Malaysia, admittedly, less than PM Lee expected but as he said, "...a hard fought proposition. As it was, it was trouble trying to get Mr. Abdullah to even agree to allowing us water again. 25 years is a good long time though, and we have a chance to renew it later."

It also calls for a provisional non-aggression agreement between Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, while a final Pact is to be hammered out in future talks. Provisions also call for a concrete settlement of the Malaysian-Bruneian Limbang Territory dispute, with the Northern half of Limbang to be ceded to Brunei for an undisclosed, but high sum.

Malaysia thanks the French for their support of the recent Malaysian-Singaporean-Bruneian Treaty. We hope that it is a step towards mutual peace in our area, over the troubles of the past.

Singapore and Brunei thank the French for their support of the recent treaty. We hope to keep this up, and settle any issues with future talks, not guns.

PM Lee to fly back for more talks, Parliament approves Treaty

Parliament of Singapore today has announced their approval of PM Lee's recent treaty with Malaysia.

"This is a step forward. I am proud my son has shown the diplomatic shrewdness and the capability to make peace. And it's harder to make peace than war," said Minister Mentor Lee Yuan Kew.

Lee himself will fly back to Kuala Lumpur, along with HRH Hassanal Bolkiah, to finish hammering out a formal Non-Aggression Treaty with the Malaysians. On the table reportedly is some level of involvement with the Straits League, though Malaysian involvement is expected to be minor at best.
