BREAKING NEWS:
Prime Minister Helen Clark submitted her budgetary statement to the Parliament to be approved today. It includes a dramatic increase in military spending, from NZD$1.1 billion to NZD$2.4 billion. The reasoning for this, as Prime Minister Clark stated, "It's a dangerous world out there, and New Zealand can no longer rely on the United States for protection." Also included in this budget were increases to education, with a small decrease in most other areas of the budget.

Parliament today voted to give a tax holiday for all foreign businesses moving into New Zealand and employing New Zealanders. This is hoping to stimulate an economy that recently took a blow in the Australian embargo. Particular favour is given to Spanish, Portuguese, Argentinian, Peruvian, and Saudi business enterprises.

The Armed Forces are comprised of 400,000 volunteers and career military officers, and is split into the traditional three branches; New Zealand Army, Royal New Zealand Navy, and Royal New Zealand Air Force. The current defense spending is $1.1bn per year, although the Clark government has pledged to double this in the next two years.
