Operation: Trident Rush

Edit [E2 Only]

Ovambo was nearing her final term as president. Her two terms proved to be better than anyone had predicted. A depression had been avoided, unemployment down to nearly 2 percent and the economy turned into a powerhouse. The latter of the accomplishments was a given before her term even started though, the economy was on a steady climb after the true government had been set up. Still the people loved her, even if some started out on the opposite end. As a result they would follow her as they did Farrell. With elections fast approaching she turned her eyes to the many world conflicts unfolding globally. Her eyes were caught be a few nations most notably those in South Africa. Swaziland and Lesotho were slowly beginning to crumble. The counties negligent governments had long ago been corrupted and destroyed. Now both counties slowly fell into turmoil. Ovambo knew it was only a matter of time before the counties would be engulfed into complete anarchy, which she had no intentions of letting that happen.

There was still one more nation that caught her intentions. This one was viewed more as a bargaining chip, elevation in negotiations. Lithuania had also fallen into desolation. When the government of Pushka fell so it did too. If she was going to make a move it would have to be quick.

It wasn’t hard to convince the people, most important congress to agree to use military force with these nations. During her speech she noted that these nations had ties to terrorist organizations and high levels of drug trafficking. Although some of these claims were embellished, these countries under no supervision had given way to drug lords and in turn terrorism. As she put it these nations were a clear and present danger to the United States of Brink. As it had been before the United States of Brink has had a relative success with military operations, hopefully this would be no exception.

With the declaration approved, she quickly put her thoughts into action. The main success of these operations would be that the governments would put up no effective defense. If a country put up a solid effort operations might stagnate and falter. With this in mind, Ovambo would settle for nothing but overwhelming force.

Military Action

The September Fleet would move from its location in the Indian Ocean around to ports located near Namibia. It would then pick up 1st and 2nd Marine Expeditionary forces and sail for the Baltic Sea. 3rd Fleet would be transferred to Mainland Combat Command and take the place of the September Fleet off the coast of Swaziland. 4th and 5th Fleets would be put on alert. Airfields all over the country began to mobilize and get ready for alert. Meanwhile 9th Airborne began to mobilize as well as a number of Ranger Battalions.

Kolsås Leir, Oslo, Norway
In the bunker underneath the relatively small Kolsås Leir, a small army camp housing a battalion of light infantry in a suburb of Oslo, Nasjonal Sikkerhetsmyndighet [National Security Authority] had its primary base along with Etterretningstjenesten [Intelligence Service]. Nasjonal Sikkerhetsmyndighet, or FO/S for short was responsible for the security of the Realm, and cooperated closely with Etterretningstjenesten, or FO/E for short. As such, it was informed of the Brinkian battlegroup which was steaming towards the Realm. The same information was passed to Forsvarets Overkommando [Military High Command], who immediately assigned a Murmansk class submarine to follow the battlegroup while surface units were assigned to follow the Brinkians on a parallel course while still keeping well away. The Brinkian speech was also analyzed at both FO/E and FO/S, and the mention of South Africa and military operations in the same sentence, wheels were turned into motion. A message was sent from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Brinkian President immediately.

Official Note to President Ovambo
"The Realm of Cotland is greatly concerned with the Brinkian intentions to launch military operations against South Africa, a territory which is under the control of the Fourth Reich of Germania, an extremely close ally to the Realm. We wish for you, Madam President, to keep from initiating any military operations against South Africa, as the Realm will defend its ally if an attack is carried out against said ally by a foreign power. We wish for your personal assurance that Brinkian military operations against the Fourth Reich is not an option, as we don't wish to be forced into conducting military operations against the United States of Brink, a nation we consider friends of the Realm. Thank you in advance."

Rest assure that we are not considering military action against North Germania. Such a course of action would lead USB towards annihilation seeing as how North Germania is a world power and leading military force. Are targets however are within South Africa but are not South Africa. We have already sent a message to North Germania asking for the usage of airspace until the hostilities are over. I hope this calms your fears as we have no intentions of starting a war between us as it would not benefit either one of us.

The waters around the coast were rough and choppy. A tropical storm had been brewing just off the coast of Namibia for a few days and was impeding movements for the September Fleet to the frustration of Admiral Hembadoom. Just a day earlier the fleet had sailed into port at Walvis Bay and was at the moment rearming and reloading. The sailors were given a three day leave as the marines began to board the transport ships that would take them into the Baltic Sea which to most of the men seemed a world away. This was not far from the truth. Most of the men had never left their town let along country, now they were about to embark upon a journey that would take them into another continent, to a new and much different world. Nevertheless the only thing that truly troubled the men was the weather, as far as they had heard Lithuania was a very chilly location.

There were still some problems with the attack which was planned for much closer. Within the region of South Africa which was controlled by, North Germania lays Swaziland. However this country lies along its eastern edge meaning USB would still need permission from North Germania before launching any sort of offensive. Ovambo was knee deep trying to receive permission which was long in coming. 3rd Fleet was already moving into position to begin an air offensive against the small country. Military planners quickly informed Ovambo that the offensive could take place across Mozambique which was controlled by Hirgizstan. Within minutes a telegram was away with hopes of an immediate reply. If both replied no than the offensive would be crushed before it even began.

Meanwhile the attack against Lesotho had already stalled. With the threat of invasion imminent the government had suddenly come out hibernation. Not wanting to risk a drawn out war against a working government the assault was called off. This was supposed to be a clean quick war. The true facts were covered up by half truths. It was called a CIA intelligence failure although no blame was directed at one person. Although this was a disappointment to some, it allowed for more troops to be used in Swaziland. The Trident was no longer.

Military Movement

The September Fleet is anchored in Walvis Bay rearming and loading troops onto transports. 3rd Fleet is a few miles from its position off the coast of Mozambique. 1st and 2nd Marine Expeditionary forces are mobilized and loading into transports bound for Lithuania. 9th Airborne is in the midst of mobilization. Air wings all over South Eastern USB are activated. 4th and 5th Fleets are on alert.

Walvis Bay

The leave for the sailors had unfortunately come to an end. Grumbling and cursing they returned to their ships, weary faced sailors and yet another mission across the globe. The great fleet lay sleeping within the confines of the harbor reflecting the beautiful golden rays of the sun. The rough coastal water chopped against the side of the steel halls which housed the crews within. They were great monsters gently floating along the waterline, massive in sight and even more deadly in combat. Their decks contained a vast diversity of death and life. On some there were hospitals, on others fighter aircraft lying in wait for the go ahead. It was a beautiful tragedy waiting to unfold.

Meanwhile across the country the 9th Airborne was ready and mobilized a few miles from Gaborone. Ovambo was just given the go ahead from Hirgizstan to use their airspace. In this way they were able to bypass the North Germania’s. Along the deck of the airfields hundreds of C5’s and C-130’s stood, waiting. It would be only a matter of time before they would be in the air housing an entire airborne army waiting to secure peace and prosperity for a new people. Yet it was still not their time and they would remain waiting. It was time for their fellow airmen to clear the path, a devastating path at that.

The men of the 1st and 2nd Marine Expeditionary forces were just about finished loading up for their long voyage across the globe into the frigid Baltic waters. The fleet would set sail tomorrow at sunrise catching the sun as it rose above the equator. The September Fleet would be in control of a number of transport ships bound for Lithuanian. They would be within the center of a tight box formation. It would take a determined air attack to reach even one of these ships. If they planned a submarine attack it would be near impossible. These ships would not be deterred.

The 3rd Fleet, with permission to use Hirgizstan airspace, readied its fighters and bombers. The flight decks became alive with activity as each member had his or her individual role to play. Within minutes three squadrons were in the air, 36 aircraft in all. 24 F-14A2 Tomcats where moving into location along side 12 F-35 multi-role fighters. They traveled at mach 2.3 at an elevation of 40,000 feet. They came in staggered with simple mission targets. They had been briefed to fire on predestinated military defense installations. They were warned about collateral damage and fitted with the latest in smart bomb technology. Their first targets would be enemy airfields and radar installments. Still ahead of the air attack the fleet had lunched a barrage of 15 cruise missiles targeted at SAM batteries and other AA defenses. These were a few miles ahead of the air attack and would be in target within the half hour.

The new operational name is Dual Spear.

Military Action

Walvis Bay

The great fleet, the single most definite character in USB history, set sail during the rising sun of March. The choppy waters had settled paving the way for a clean crisp voyage. The tropical storm remained just that and was quickly moving away up the coast just out of reach of the fleet. They left to cheering crowds and teary eyed mothers. Still the crowd wasn’t that huge and only those with relation to the sailors or soldiers were there. Even so it was a gracious good by. None of the soldiers thought in their minds that this would be the last time they would see home. The operation didn’t seem that serious. It had been told to them that it was simply a mopping up operation, a milk run. Nevertheless they were armed and ready; the unknown would play no factor in this engagement. So the great fleet sailed for the frigid waters of the Baltic Sea. What lay on the other side of the globe more a dream than a mystery.

Swaziland

To much of high commands surprise the missiles had not been intercepted, nor even an attempt made. Their pinpoint accuracy smashed down into installations, barracks, and radar. Airfields became infernos. The first strikes had been made and it looked as if it was going to play out according to plan in Swaziland. Another 36 aircraft in the same formation was launched two hours after the first wave with another 36 coming in in the next two hours after that. The first waves were now well in range of their intended targets, SAM sights and airfields. They let lose a barrage of 144 missiles before veering off back to their respected carriers. The barrage included exocet, sidewinder, and various other ordinates. If this was to continue high command was tinkering with the idea of sending in the airborne early. Time would tell and it was running up for the Reagonica government.

Military Action

The September Fleet has set sail for Lithuania. Missile Impact successful. 144 missile barrage incoming from 36 aircraft. Another 36 aircraft inbound for another barrage.

"The Realm have noticed the large fleet heading for our territorial waters, and remind Brink of §§ 3 through 5, 7 through 10, 14 through 16 and 29 of the Protection of the Realm Act (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=465139), and inquires as to the reason of why such a large naval force is heading towards Cotland. We remind Brink that we will not allow any naval force to pass through our territorial waters unless they obtain permission in advance and is escorted by Cottish naval vessels."

I hereby apologize for not educating myself on your nation’s maritime rules. It was a strategic fault on nobody but my own. Our fleet remains an estimated one day from your waters. We wish to ask permission to cross through your territorial waters, most notably the Skagerak. To assure safety of your nation and its people, we will hold in our place if you wish to provide an escort. Our intentions are in no way a hostile movement against your nation. We wish to provide stability in a region where collapse is inevitable. Intelligence states that within this turmoil terrorism has bread. We hope to secure peaceful borders among our nations.

The Cottish beurocracy wasn't too large, which was the reason why the Brinkian request came through the system from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Ministry of Defense and the High Command relatively quickly. The High Command assessed the situation and circumstances before they made their recommendation to the Ministry, who then reported to the cabinet. The issue and the recommendations from the two ministries in question [Defense and Foreign Affairs] were discussed by the cabinet and King, and a decision was reached. The answer was sent to the two ministries, who put the wheels into motion. Eleven hours after the communique was recieved, an answer was sent to the United States of Brink foreign ministry.

Secret Communique to Brink

"Your request has been analyzed and considered, and we are pleased to inform you that your request has been granted. Please have the ships in question hold station exactly fifty nautical miles west of Bergen and await the escort from the Royal Cottish Navy. We remind you that all offensive and intelligence-gathering systems [OOC: weapons and all radars/sonars but navigational ones] must be turned off before you enter Cottish territorial waters. Please follow the instructions of the Cottish naval vessels and pilots, and do not deviate as that will be interpeted as a hostile action and dealt with accordingly. The Cottish escorts will be arriving at the station within twelve hours."

OOC: I'm assuming you came through the northern route [not through the English channel] with that large fleet of yours.

At Haakonsvern naval base, three Mjelde class (http://cotland.proboards59.com/index.cgi?board=ships&action=display&thread=1141767438) frigates and five Ecolo class (http://cotland.proboards59.com/index.cgi?board=ships&action=display&thread=1141762729) corvettes steamed out of port and headed towards the rendevous-point. Ahead of them, a P-7A LRAACA loaded with AGM-205 AMESMs and Mk.50 Mod 2 Barracudas headed out to scout for the Brinkian fleet. Also, a Destroyer Squadron was ordered out of dock at Arendal naval base to steam to the territorial water border to bolster the escort.

September Fleet

The request had been met and approved to the relief of Harvard Dugan. Cotland had graciously allowed the fleet to pass through their territorial waters unhampered, which if not allowed, would have put a stop to the entire operation. Ovambo’s relationship building skills now played their role. Dugan admired her for that; it was the political side of things he never grasped. Regardless he had always been grateful of Cotland as is most all of the Brink populace. The Cottish were the first to formally recognize Brink as a free nation. He knew a time would come where he would be able to return the favor.

With all that in mind the fleet would obviously cooperate. They were just a few hours within range of their target rendezvous which would just slightly put them off schedule however it was nothing to bothered Dugan too much. He understood that this is how things work in the world. He would use the time to catch up on some Z’s he had been missing since boarding the ship. Command would be handed over to Admiral Hembadoom in the meantime. Hembadoom was a small man with deep brown skin and a snow white facial hair. He was a stoic commander that was straight forward and to the point which was why Dugan admired him so much. He was a brilliant commander in naval confrontations and led the fleet while it was under Zeeeland control. Upon rendezvous the order would be given to power down most systems to satisfy Cottish requests. For almost the remainder of the voyage they would be in the dark. Intelligence still showed no sign of Lithuanian reaction.

Swaziland

Meanwhile half way around the world the barrage of missiles impacted on another set of targets. Although destruction was obvious it would take some time before conformation would be made about the strategic value of the bombing. Again the pilots veered off back to their carriers. Again another barrage of 144 missiles from another 36 aircraft was launched. Behind them the final wave of 36 was inbound. The air war was going splendidly for the USBAF and USBN. Than word came, the invasion was going to begin prematurely. The intended seven days had been cut to five meaning the invasion force would take off in roughly a day and a half. The barrage would be intensified for obvious reasons. High level bombers would begin taking off from airfields in Southern Botswana in preparation for the invasion. All airborne troops were recalled and put on alert. The wheels of invasion were turning.

Military Action

The September Fleet remains 1 day away from target. They are now holding for Cottish escort. 144 Missiles hit various targets in Swaziland. Another 144 missiles launched from 36 aircraft. Another 36 aircraft inbound. Invasion planned for 1 ½ days. High Level bombers on standby.

The ships arrived at the location of the large Brinkian September Fleet, slightly amazed at the size of ships. Seven carriers, twenty-three cruisers, five destroyers, six frigates and eight submarines as well as a lot of support and transport vessels. Opposing them were the three frigates, five corvettes and lone maritime patrol aircraft. Still, the Cots had a whole military behind them, only fifty nautical miles away. Anti-shipping bomber wings were on a standby, and fighters were ready to intercept the Brinkians in the unlikely event that it should be needed. On the lead Mjelde class frigate, the captain radioed the Brinkian fleet with instructions, speaking in a moderately accented voice.

"September fleet, this is HMS 'Mikkel'. Please disable all offensive and intelligence-gathering systems and follow our lead and instructions to the letter. Do not exceed fifteen knots, and do not deviate from the course. Failure to comply will result in the immediate destruction of your fleet. HMS 'Mikkel' out."

The Cottish ships then took up positions around the fleet, with a frigate leading the group and corvettes and frigates flanking the fleet on the sides and rear. The P-7A flew over the fleet, watching closely for any deviants. It was expected that they would be reach the territorial waters in three hours and fifteen minutes, and be through in sixteen.

September Fleet

With the invasion going accordingly all eyes were now on Europe. For the most part in its prior days Brink had more of an isolationism idea than one of world police. When something important happened throughout the world it usually didn’t concern Brink so it was put on the back burner. However Ovambo had strived to change this and with many Brinks’ watching the invasion force move north they also saw the news broadcasts. Lichtenstein’s government had slowly crumbled as many nations tend to do without constant leadership. Operation Dual Spear’s mission had been to restore order in two neglected nations yet now they could incorporate another as well.

Ovambo quickly phoned Dugan aboard the BSS Windhoek to explain the situation. Lichtenstein was a very small yet wealthy nation located in-between Austria and Switzerland. It was once controlled by the government of Liebormonk. Since than the government has slipped and with that so have many jobs. Lichtenstein has always been a country of wealth and power with its basis of free enterprise. Since the majority of the citizens were wealthy or well off, at least, there was little rioting or chaos. To say little means that regardless there were still some riots. However these riots had not the power nor the numbers to get the people motivated to make a drastic change. With wealth comes intelligence and the people would find a more peaceful solution. This would not be a hostile takeover, no, this would be done politically.

Dugan awoke to an urgent phone call rather unpleasantly. He had been in his quarters trying desperately to catch up on some missed sleep. Nevertheless the phone call went through and like usual he heard Ovambo’s quick voice. He motioned for the aide to leave the room which he did rather quickly. The conversation lasted roughly under 45 minutes, the whole time Dugan could be seen massaging his temples. Military force? Was this lady crazy? There would be no way to get through North Germanian airspace we know this from the Swaziland campaign. It would be nice to lay claim to this beautiful chunk of land yet there were too many variables. The most important was also the most simple. What would stop North Germania from simply walking in and claiming it? There could be nothing easier than that. If there was to be a change it would come from the inside.

Meanwhile the September Fleet was now at the mercy of the Cottish escort squadron. All electronic devices were shut down. They were officially in the dark for the time being. It was slightly unnerving yet the supreme headquarters trusted Cotland, it had to at this point. So they sailed with and ETA around 20 hours.

Swaziland

In Swaziland no counter attack attempt had been made. Things remained quiet that is not counting the various missiles striking down against military installations. Another 144 missiles had come crashing down this time military barracks and bridges. The final 144 missiles were supposed to be aimed at troop movements but were now being called in to destroy roads, and other defensive strong points. The Gaborone Wing flight of high level bombers had just begun to take off. Their targets were military bases and troop movements if any. On the ground members of the 9th Airborne began to board troop transports which would drop them into Swaziland. The lead planes were already airborne circling the airfield in a holding pattern. It was just a matter of time.

Military Action

144 Missiles hit bridges and barracks. Final 144 missiles inbound. High Level bombers inbound. Airborne beginning to take off. September Fleet moving with Cottish Escort.

Lichtenstein

Once again the weather was wet and cold something you get use to when living in Europe. An icy breeze hurtled through the small town, creeping its way through any crack for small opening, the frigid air sweeping the breath away from the poor souls inside. The rains had subsided and the dark clouds had broken slightly letting in a glimpse of sun. The town was nestled within the outgrowing of the local mountains. It was picturesque yet it hid desolate peoples. For the most part the country was well to do, yet many overlooked the poor. Many people relied on government jobs or anything that had a slight relation to it and with its downfall came poverty. It was here that, as John Steinbeck once wrote, the grapes of wrath began to ferment. Men huddled together, huddled together around a fire and they talked. For those in charge this was the thing you must bomb. These men huddled together began to talk. If they unified, if they began to act as one than they could sweep the nation and there would be nothing anybody could do. And as of right now, nobody was stopping them. So there they sat and there they talked and there they became one. It wouldn’t take long now, no, the grapes of wrath were begging to ferment.

Still there were variables, there will always be variables. One constant fear remained for the people and that was North Germania. Liebermonk, although negligent, had proven to be a prime style of government for the people. They were free, and had the right of free enterprise. They enjoyed their life; they made money and spent it how they pleased. Their neighbors to the north, south, east, and west had a different way of life, one they did not so much agree with. Everyone within Lichtenstein knew this and everyone had something to say. An idea had to be made and it had to be made quickly for their was always more variables. Already eager eyes had been laid upon this wealthy land. The people would not allow themselves to be ruled by anything else but themselves. It was with these huddled masses around this bright blazing fire that a man stood. He was a simple man, Hans Kass, was his name. His idea would spread. His words would be spoken by anyone who heard them. At what point does it become more than words, when does it become an idea? Kass spoke softly yet the vigor in his voice was unmistakable. I want to be free. What is more significant, when you would kill for something or die for it?

The horrific yell of missiles screeched through the bright clear sky. All that was left behind were vanishing vapor trials and smoke and ruin. The impact was devastating and destructive not to mention accurate. Sporadic fires arose here and there but generally speaking there was nothing left to catch fire. The open desert fields gave way to dry crisp grass that was about knee deep. Each stalk swayed carelessly with the wind giving the field a singular moving effect. The occasional missile would streak nearby causing a disturbance in the flow. Underfoot people scurried to and fro yet there was little danger for the residential populace. After-action reports indicated almost no collateral damage. Nevertheless the people were frightened, what was to happen next. There was a lull only a slight pleasant lull. It was the calm before the storm so to speak. The Airborne Army was already in mid-flight. The lead elements were already within minutes of their drop zones. Yet slightly ahead of them two squadrons of Fe-5 Heavy Bombers were “walking” a barrage of their own. Forward Ground-to-Air Observers were already transmitting coordinates to the bomber pilots. Their precision area bombing was systematically eliminating areas where counter-attacks were liable. Their payloads were massive, deadly, and pin-point. The ground crumbled under their ferocity. Finally, two squadrons of multi-role fighters were airborne ready to assist the ground troops where ever needed. There had been no signs as of yet to suggest that the Swaziland Air force would be arriving which meant that the USBAF controlled the air with impunity.

September Fleet

The Cottish escorts had made no attempt to disrupt or destroy the fleet to the delight of Dugan. In fact they had been most accommodating, and allowed passage with the ut-most in urgency. Before long the fleet would be within fighter deployment range without violating Cotland airspace as well as on their own. As for now the soldiers began their final briefings. Equipment was checked and than rechecked. The final preparations had begun.

Lichtenstein

Where can you pin an idea? Where does a change so great that it could change the entire country start? An idea can only work when people agree with it, when they themselves feel it with the same enthusiasm as the leader. There is always a leader, someone who is the driving force behind the change. Washington, Hitler, Gandhi, they were leaders who changed the world, yet they were only one man. That is all it takes, simply one man. Kass knew this and he damn well used this. He talked and yelled and drove people into a frenzy. He kept it simple and he kept it moving he knew how to work the crowd. It was pride he sought and freedom he wished. The people would crowd where ever he was and they would ask, no, beg for him to speak. So he would, he would climb on top of a car, or a deck, or a statue and he would speak his soul. He was gracious and smooth and the crowd love it, loved every bit of it. The word would spread, the ideas would spread. Soon the next town would be waiting, the next crowd of people to conquer. It was so simple, and idea, one man is all it took. The rich and the poor, the filthy and the clean, the young and the old would come out, would watch. His words would flow over them his speech would sooth and yet rile at the same time. Freedom is what he promised and god willing freedom is what he would get.

As the Brinkian ships exited Cottish territorial waters, the Cottish escorts stopped and turned back towards Norway. They held position inside their own territorial waters, protecting the Cottish sovereign waters.

"This is HMS Mikkel. You're cleared from Cottish territorial waters. Have a nice trip, and remember to check in in advance when you want to return home. HMS Mikkel out."

With that, the Cots left the Brinkians to their own business. Or so it seemed. Without any fuss, an old Tennessee class SSK submerged and followed the September Fleet, keeping its distance, watching...

The huge airborne army was now falling from the sky; descending upon its open prey. 35,000 men were now fast plummeting towards earth, a hard unforgiving earth. The harsh fried grounds of the African plains met each soldier personally and with vigor. The hard leather souls touched down sending up clouds of dust and dirt choking the soldiers caught within its grasps. They were met with no resistance what so ever and conducting the drop in mid day in full daylight all target DZ’s were hit. The continuous roar of C-130 engines continued throughout the day with each new wave came more troops or supplies. Among the first waves were limited drops of tanks and other mechanized equipment. After careful evaluation it was concluded that the initial attack would take little armor reinforcement yet later waves would bring on a decent amount to fill all three Division’s quotas. The mission was, at the higher levels, very simple. The 35,000 men would be split into two forces, 20,000 men of the 20th and 34th Divisions would drop near Mhlume and secure the city. Once secure they would continue on to the capitol of Mbabane and secure it. The other 15,000 men of the 21st and remaining 34th Divisions would land near Siteki than move on to capture Big Bend. With these major cities secure each division would split up and advance into the smaller cities dotting the countryside. Meanwhile the 8th Army, stationed in Zimbabwe, would be flown in to act as a security force for the remainder of the operation. In all it was a sound plan yet it relied heavily on speed and little armor opposition. It has been a known fact that airborne troops have difficulty with any armor units. Still given the circumstances USB controlled the air and therefore controlled the battlefield. In military terms this battle was only a matter of time, not a question of if.

It was just after noon when the final soldiers of the 21st and 34th Divisions touched down one point 5 miles east of Mhlume. The city wasn’t much to look at, if there was anything at all. If all went well they would be at the gates of city within twenty minutes. They would use a three pronged assault, yet they would only use roughly ten thousand of the twenty thousand they had available. Ahead of each group was a small armor spearhead. There were no threats as of this moment of any counter attacks, especially by a force large enough to create significant damage to the assault teams. That combined with the fact that since there had been no signs of aggression this might very well turn out to be a milk run like many had suspected. Maybe, just maybe, there would be no fighting at all. The soldiers would be bummed, all that training for nothing but at least they would be alive. At least they would see no death.

The remaining forces were dropped exactly one mile from the city of Siteki. These men consisted of the 21st and 34th Divisions, 15,000 men in all. They were going to hit the city in roughly ten minutes using a two pronged assault. Five thousand men would strike from the north at the same time with 5 thousand men striking from the east. The remaining five thousand would be left for reserves for the big push across open country to Big Bend. Everyone knew how dangerous a drive across open ground could be. They all hoped it wouldn’t be another “Hell’s Highway”. As with the drop north of them they met light resistance if any at all. Where was everyone?

Lithuania

They were back, all systems go. The September Fleet had finally come out of the “black”. They were now ready and waiting for the order to begin the invasion. Of course, unlike the airborne invasion of Swaziland, this would take some time longer to accomplish. The Fleet settled just off the coast of Lithuania. Within hours the flight decks were buzzing and aircraft were leaving the decks. The city that is an aircraft carrier came to life; thousands of seamen were bustling about like ants over a hive. This was a tricky situation. The USB fighters, along with Supreme Command, wanted no damage done to anything civilian meaning that the cities were in fact safe for now. Any coastal defenses however would have to be obliterated. This meant strict rules of engagement. Everything would have to be confirmed twice before an attack was launched. Satellite imagines could make out some coastal works but in all there didn’t seem to be many. If possible this was to be an easy transfer of power. Dugan wanted to save lives. Nevertheless what had to be done had to be done. Two squadrons of F-14’s and F-35’s were off the decks and heading towards the coast. The air war had begun.

Lichtenstein

The storm was rising, a new dawn approaching. More and more the people would talk. More and more the idea would become words, would become reality. Like the days when storytellers were the most well respected people in the village, word of mouth was ruling the day. The storm was indeed rising. There would be a new time for a new day. This threat would not stop, it would not falter, and it would not let up in the fact of resistance. It would be at the steps of the capitol, Vaduz would not be spared. The lawmakers would not be spared. They knew it too, and yet there were powerless. A storm rising indeed.

The fighters had released their ordinates with devastating precision. The defenses smelled that of cordite and smoke. The sounds of destruction echoed most of the day as fighters launched from their decks and met the ground with terrific firepower. The aerial bombardment went perfectly. Taking word that the Swaziland operation was going better than expected they too would launch the invasion early. Tomorrow the gates would drop and the marines would storm the beaches of Europe. It would be the first time a Brinkian soldier would ever step foot on European soil. Still there was a slight change of plans. With absolutely no counter attack or solid defenses it was assumed that the government had fallen into such disarray that not even its own people knew how bad it was. The same thing happened in Swaziland and the campaign wasn’t expected to take that long. With that in mind Dugan made an executive decision. They would enter Kaliningrad Oblast as well which meant the elimination of the government of Riptide Monzarc. 1st MEF would take Lithuanian while 2nd would be divert more west to Kaliningrad Oblast. For now the beachheads were pounded from the air and from the navy. For now the Marines readied themselves. Prepare for the worst hope for the best.

The 301st Battalion was on lead heading south on the city. On their right were the 302nd and the 303rd. Behind them were two more battalions in reserve. It would be the 20th’s objective to take and secure the north eastern sector of the city, while battalions of the 34th would hit the city from the west and south. The attack was planned for 10,000 men yet only around 7,000 would be used. The armor was out in front, hopefully to roll over any static resistance. Only the western sector saw much action from the get go. Roadblocks had been set up by a local terrorist group known as the Murathi, or the Prophets. Lead elements of the 310th Battalion 34th Division smashed into the roadblocks at around 12:40 PM. A small firefight ensued. Small arms fire peppered the invaders with an occasional mortar blast littering the ground. AK shots rang out from various windows along the entry street into the city followed by one or two RPG’s firing from undisclosed locations. The buildings were quickly turned to rubble after a few well placed high explosive rounds from the lead M1A4 Abrams leading the assault. The defenders slowly gave way and disappeared into the dark dank alleys of the city. Reports suggested that nearly 130 terrorists were killed during the bout while 15 were left injured. The lead battalion also reported ten wounded and no killed a very good ratio in any military advisors book. That would be all the conflict that sector would have for the day. However once the northern task force had entered the city a rather large firefight occurred. Local civilians reported earlier in the day that the northern area of the city was the breeding ground for Murathi. Sporadic machine gun fire riddled the mechanized columns as they rode through the streets. The racket of small arms fire included the reports of AK’s, RPG’s, grenades, and RPK’s. Bullets pinged of the side armor of the tanks as they rolled through the city. Even with the gun battles the units rolled on keeping up a steady stream of counter fire. The occasional F-14 would swoop in only to exit much lighter than went it went in. Tracer rounds found their marks as the gunfire finally died down. Still throughout the city the sounds of gun fire would be off and on. Causality reports for the lead battalion in the northern sector include four dead and thirty three wounded. The lead battalions in the southern sector met no resistance and were first to reach the center of town. After a brisk run in with local militants the cities airport was secured. The battalion reported no killed or wounded. By nightfall the city was secured. The follow up battalions would fall into place and by morning the assault on the capitol would begin.

The city of Siteki was relatively quiet. It was far removed from the rest of the country and had little militant influence. However there were reports of some ugly run-ins with the locals but nothing resulted. The city was secured by midday and by night fall Big Bend was within reach. The operation was going ahead smoothly. So long as it did the media would have nothing to feed on and it could continue.

The storm would not die down, not yet at least. The crowds had gathered but now they moved. Vast numbers of people, those less fortunate those poor, those survivalists. There uncommon valor was not proven by bullets or bloodshed. It was proven with words and a cause, the “most glorious cause”. Every man has rights, god given rights from birth. This was there call, their main ideal. So they would march until they were heard, and they knew it was only a matter of time before they would. You can tell when change is near; there is a feeling, certain uneasiness. It sends chills up your spine but you are ok with it, it has a mysterious comfort to it that is quite perplexing in its entirety. Kass would lead them because they needed a leader, and they would follow Kass because he needed followers. So they came, they came from every corner of Lichtenstein. They came from the Samina River, Ruggell, Triessen, Balzers, and Schaan. And where did they end up but the gates of Vaduz. Hundreds upon thousands they came until the city could hold no more. There was no great clash of swords, no innocent blood spilt; there was only cheering and laugher. They knew their cause and they knew why they were there, they were all one, all for the common good of their fellow man. Even those in office knew and they readied themselves not for war but for peace. Kass would enter the capitol building and he would come out with something else.

The waters were rough and cold, just as suspected. The waters chopped and splattered into the hulls of the landing craft. The soldiers shivered along the decks as sea spray misted the decks and holding bays. Streaks of red and yellow lit the morning sky as missiles continually left their launching sites. The long hiss of the rockets was followed by a soft thud in the distance as it impacted the ground. The constant roar or aircraft could be heard over the explosions as air support continued. The first waves were already hitting the beaches at Palanga to no resistance. The government and the military had not responded, they simply lay dormant. The lead elements crashed against the rising ground and were quickly struggling ashore. The cold water hit them harder than any bullet was that day, most soldiers not use to such frigid waters. Still they trudged ashore, some encountering locals who quickly dispersed. As usual the operation was behind schedule yet the second and third waves were already on their way meanwhile the beachhead was being secure. With no immediate resistance the supply lines were kept open and the breakout was sure to be quick.

Operation Clean-up

The biggest threat to the September Fleet now lay at anchor at the harbor in Klaipeda. This was the bulk of the Lithuanian fleet. If this fleet was to be badly damage they could not concentrate enough forces to cause much problems. The order was quickly given and within minutes three squadrons were making speed toward the harbor. Each carried with them enough ordinances to sink at least two ships each. If intelligence was right there were near twenty five ships in anchor including four aircraft carriers. With the amount of time it would take the fighters to get there the ships would not be able to make more than three out of the harbor. It would be complete surprise. There was even hardly anytime to scramble interceptor fighters. It would be quick destruction.

The aircraft barrage was met with under-estimated defense. There were large number of SAM concentrations in the area which caused a great delay on the actual attack. However these were quickly silenced at a cost of one KIA and two damaged fighters. All that was left was sporadic ground fire and rough anti-aircraft fire. Even so the anchored ships, with little warning, let lose a barrage of guns. The fleet was hurriedly overrun as the planes unleashed their terrific play loads. One by one the ground fire ceased to be as missile after missile made contact. After a number of minutes most gun crews had ducked for cover after the aftermath became apparent. The harbor was loosely defended as it was, the government had as said before fallen into hibernation. As quick as it started it was over. The fighters were already on their way home. Reports indicated that 3 carriers were sunk while one was badly damaged. As for the rest of the ships there was a 70 % sinking percentage while 20 % were to badly damaged to cause much concern. The operation was a success.

Palanga

The beachhead had been secured and all waves were now officially touched down. The remainders wouldn’t be brought up until the breakout occurred lest the beach become over crowded which was often feared. Members of the 20th Battalion moved along the main roads by nightfall had secured the city. There had been no resistance although word trickled down the lines that enemy forces were massing for a counter attack at first light the next morning. These rumors provided false yet the threat of enemy counter attacks still loomed. Regardless USB had control of the skies so any mass of enemy would be met with devastating firepower. The initial air strikes had met no opposition and had eliminated every air base within the beachhead sector and they were now working their way inland every hour. Members of the 22nd and 23rd Battalions were already surging forward and heading to secure the next city in the line, Kretinga.

Lichtenstein

March 23, 2006 would be a day that would go down in the history of Lichtenstein and its people. The winds of war had faded, the storm rising and died out and peace prevailed. They were a shining ray of hope surrounded by utter contempt. They would look themselves in the eye and claim their god given freedom. They had done so without blood, without war, or destruction. They had come together, they had put pen to paper and now it all came into play. No ruler would claim Lichtenstein, no monarch or king. They would be ruled by themselves, for themselves. The country would have a new beginning, and a different end. With pride in their faces and tears gently rolling down their cheeks they would call themselves: The Independent Republic of Lichtenstein. There were now and forever free.

Swaziland

Big Bend fell without hassle, and than Hlatikulu, and than Nhlangano. The country was quickly being consumed without mercy. When I say without mercy I do not mean ruthlessly, but at a rapid pace. As usual the civil affairs units quickly followed suit and began conducting business as usual. And as always it takes time, sometimes never, to persuade people of your kind intentions. Most units are met with more resistance than the actual military units rolling through the city. And sometimes they were met with happy faces and cheering children. The country was still “backwards”, meaning it was by far a third world country. The majority of the population lived in small huts that made tiny villages which dotted the landscape for miles. The cities, if you’d call them that, were nothing of the cities popping up in USB at the moment. In most places they were nothing more than a conglomeration of markets and bazaars. Dirt roads made travel not tough but more grueling added with the dense South African heat. The soldiers lost more numbers to heat exhaustions than actual bullets. Nevertheless whether the populace liked it for not the civil affairs were there and they would bring them water and food and if the people eat it than they would starve, there was no other choice at the moment.

However this was not the case for those troops of the lead elements of the 20th Division which was responsible for taking on the capitol. The lead elements of the 15th Battalion made contact with enemy concentrations at around 4 AM in the morning. The lead armor had fallen into a crude ambush set about by the locals aided by the terrorist group operation out of the capitol. The capitol prior to the assault had brought together the worst of the Swaziland militants under one roof. The largest concentration of enemy would be located within this rusting old city. Since the fall of the government some time earlier new factions began to pop up and with that came obvious civil war, however this civil war was only fought around the confines of the city. Once knew came about that an actual army was closing on the city the militants in an awkward move joined forces if only temporary to try and stave off the defenders. With this in mind the militants decided to throw everything they had at the battalion now facing them. The first two tanks were knocked out by a combination of land mines and self propelled guns. The rebels had secured two anti-tank weapons and had hidden them very well. The army however was in no mood to deal with these head on and a pair of 22’s quickly dislodged the static defenses. Both crews were dead which meant that it was already the single bloodiest day of combat. Along with the crew two soldiers had been hit by shrapnel but were not killed. After the airs strike the ground forces began to advance under bewildering fire. Small arms fire continued all days as terrorists popped up, took a few shots and disappeared. The gain was minimal at first the lead troops hitting resistance and stopping, yet as the day moved on the infantry got up slight tank support and at a loss of four killed and twenty three wounded they moved into the city. Once in the combatants broke off their attack and made for the inner corridors of the city.

Now the lead elements of the 34th Division struck from the north and made rapid ground against weak dug in positions. The quick advanced was halted within hours however by direct mortar fire which meant they had an observer somewhere in the buildings along the street. Two armor units were quickly on the seen and placed a number of rounds into the skyline ending the mortar fire. Still this stall gave the defenders enough breathing room to set up another set of defenses. Both assaults bogged down by day and were broke off. They resumed under the cover of darkness which gave the invaders the upper hand. The initial advance was slow but with support of armor they were quickly through the second line of earthworks. The night cover helped and by daybreak the attackers were within sight of each other. As midday approached the units met and were quickly securing the capitol. The remainder of the divisions was brought in and the city was “secure”. For the remainder of the day this would remain a hot spot for insurgency. This lead to the calling of numerous Ranger Battalions laced in with regular units. After a few nights the insurgency seemed no more or at least severely hampered. The commanding general finally called Dugan and informed him the capitol was clean. Within the next few days Piggs Peak, Manzini, and Lobamba were all in USB control. The government deemed initial fighting over and the country secure. Units from 8th Army were already being ferried into Swaziland to take up security detail. Still more cities would have to be secure but the attack was over.

Now the 1st MEF broke off into two groups. The main battle group, Taskforce Dugan, would move south to secure Klaipeda while the second would continue east and secure the city of Kretinga. The capitol was a long way off as it was located in the very south eastern corner of the country. The plan of action was simple. Taskforce Dugan would move along the northern corridor of the country capturing: Siauliai and Panevezys. The other group would move more south securing Kaunas. Finally both units would meet and capture the capitol for the final showdown. The ETA for the mission was no longer than 2 weeks. It was to be a blitzkrieg mission, which was aided along by the fact that the enemy had put up no formidable obstacles for them to overcome. The only downfall was the amount of men, in this case they would rely more on air and armor support instead of down and dirty grunt work.

Taskforce Dugan was lead by 24th Battalion, which was a veteran armor unit which had seen fighting in Zimbabwe before being transferred to the MEF. Near 7 AM they made contact with a small group of what looked to be Lithuanian troops. The USB ROE stated for this mission to avoid all conflict in the event of enemy contact. USB was in no mood to make enemies in any event. Yet these were deserters of 8th regiment from the Lithuanian Home Guards, and elite unit of the Lithuanian Army. This unit was backed by a local militant group that came into operation once the collapse in government became apparent. The battle occurred only a few blocks into the city, an ambush had been set up. Anti tank guns had been placed in various buildings along the route and the 24th lost three tanks in a matter of minutes. The lead company suffered a few casualties but was able to pull out before it got serious. When the rest of the company moved up the small arms fire stopped and the unit retreated farther in town. Once things settled down the company started up again only to have the exact scenario play out, one more tank brewed up. The entire column halted, and within a matter of minutes FO’s were walking air support along the entire route, the problem was quickly solved. Dugan left behind more than the usual amount of troops to secure the city and quickly moved on.

Siauliai fell without armed resistance but again at Panevezys the lead elements of the attack came under fire. This time the culprit was a regiment from the local militia. However this force seemed to be backed up with units from the actual Lithuanian Army. This proved to be a formidable defending force. Rocket Propelled Grenades showered the attackers with high explosives. Zips and Thuds gave the scene that added dose of chaos. The defenders were armed with AK-74’s which, although inaccurate than most, was playing havoc on the attackers. A smokescreen also threw off the tank crews who fired aimlessly into surrounding buildings. The city was no place for armor and airpower was becoming woefully inaccurate. The troops dashed from street corner to street corner taking pot shots with there G36A4. The rifle was a favorite for the army would adopted it during the military reorganization. The Airborne even adopted the compact version which proved a perfect fit. Nevertheless they made slow but bloody progress through the streets. The MEF didn’t expect this kind of resistance; it was supposed to be only a few local militant groups or terrorist cells. However it seemed now they had all joined together. The zip of bullets clouded the air as it rained down so thick you could have caught it with a bucket. Rubble slowed the advance and at times it was at a standstill. The most frustrating part was the fact that you could not see your enemy. With mounting casualties and little progress the unit pulled back for the remainder of the day. A fresh regiment was moved in and during the night the resumed the attack. Night attacks proved effective against local troops and this fared no different. The defenders were caught off guard yet regrouped in order to make a brilliant stand. Tracers lit the night sky and the Lithuanian sunset brought about a fierce chill to the air. The shots became crisp and painful. The night attack gained more ground but with mounting casualties again they withdrew, it had been a hard day. With morning came a re-new assault and finally a breakthrough. As suspected the defenders could not hold off for much longer and as they day moved on the firing slowed until it stopped around 3:30 PM. The remainder of the city fell without much indecent, only a retreating action by the defenders. Again Dugan had to leave more soldiers behind than he wanted to.

Now it would be the long hall to the capitol, dangerously under strength. The operation in Kaliningrad Oblast was slated to begin soon and argument over whether to cancel it was quickly shot down. The capitol would fall no matter.

Klaipeda came under control with no problems at all, again another quiet city, it was like a damn bingo game. It put all the soldiers on edge, not knowing with town would be hostile, not knowing what person would soon end your life with a Kalashnikov.
On the way to the next city of Kaunas the middle elements came under mild attack. This hap hazard attack was quickly disposed of as it was not well coordinated. Finally at the gates of the city the convoy came under slight small arms but nothing amounted into anything and again the city seemed quiet. Fortunately this unit would still be considered full strength for the assault on the capitol. Intelligence reported a slight buildup of forces surrounding the city and unlike similar reports from earlier these were reliable. The average soldier could tell because of the increased air support moving more inland than they were advancing. There would be a showdown at the capitol.

Kaliningrad Oblast

The 2nd MEF had hit the beaches, this time by both water and air. Ranger battalions laced in with a number of different Marine units were ferried into Primorsk via Chinook. As with the Lithuanian landings these went undisturbed. The enemy had neither the knowledge nor a force capable of doing substantial damage to the landings. Within hours the beachhead was secure but already problems were amounting. Unlike in Lithuania, the beaches had become overcrowded and any chance of the landing supporting the air assault units vanished, they would have to take the city along. The traffic jam would result in at least a days delay much to the chagrin of the commanding officer. Still with no resistance the air assault group secured the main arteries into the city and would be able to hold off until the rest of the units could arrive to start the advance.

Lithuania

A small storm had broken off the coast of the Lithuania, which was causing havoc with the carrier launches. It was unusual for the cold waters of the Baltic to produce such a storm that had enough steam to make it inward. Most of the country was caught within a faint icy rain. However the capitol stood alone almost in defiance. Yet as the days passed it to was hit yet it quickly turned to snow which turned to slush than into ice. To say the least it was not the type of environment anyone would want to fight in. And god willing the soldiers of the MEF was in no mood to fight. They were African people, South African at that, not cold weather people in the least. Yet there they were standing along the road trudging through the slush soon to be ice. The lead columns of the Taskforce Dugan were hit first.

Most of the bridges leading into the city had been blown; it was bitter struggles to make it anywhere near them. Fixed gun emplacements held off the armor for some time before well placed artillery and air support dislodged the fighters. This was not good, a fight meant resistance, and a fight of this magnitude would only resort to trouble. It was only a matter of time before this went public, this blatant act of imperialism. Truth be told that is what much of it was, yet the fact that terrorists had taken power was not far from the truth. Yet it wouldn’t matter to the people if this got out of hand what made ends meet. So it would have to be quick and efficient. The enemy had constructed well placed static defenses along the river giving them interlocking fields of fire which they poured on the invaders with intensity. The attack stalled; regardless of how many they killed they would have to wait for a pontoon bridge to be constructed. With this lull the fighting moved more south in the direction of 2nd Taskforces attack. They had captured a bridge in tacked by sending a small column of armor in a flanking motion and capturing in from both ends. The fight to clear resistance was bitter however. The remaining elements of defenders did not “mop” up as easily as thought. A small enemy pocket formed around an industrial complex my mid day. After a fierce bombardment the pocket suddenly counter attack and for a few hours held the south end of the bridge. Under a dense smokescreen the marines quickly regained the ground the pocket was no more. Small arms fire was the name of the game. The rat tat of 47’s and the return fire of the G36 echoed the entire day. By dusk the attack died down, both sides retreated to a more secure location before the attack could resume.

The bulk of the fighting stayed in the 2nd Taskforce’s sector. Again the attackers used the darkness to gain ground. Moving street by street they flushed the defenders out. Bitter street fighting ensued. Alley ways became graveyards as metal hit flesh. Grenades and rockets tore up the streets and tossed around concrete. Snow became dirt. Fighting at some points became hand to hand. Block by block they fought there way into the center of town. By dawn the next day the fighting had almost ceased. Both sides needed a breather. Reports were sketchy but the most probable numbers gave the death count at 42 while the wounded near 267. Meanwhile Taskforce Dugan had constructed the bridge and under heavy fire began to make headlong into the city. Although they suffered far less losses they made far less progress. The time had allowed the defenders to constructed well made roadblocks and chokepoints. The fire became very accurate and as the day wore on so did the wounded and dead. The city basically eliminated the close air support along with the weather. With the sometimes extremely small streets, armor could not be used to its greatest potential. Rifle fire finally broke the stalemate and inch by inch, street by street the Marines trudged forward. Once the initial lines were broke the advance became quite rapid.

Finally by the morning of the third day the defenders gave way. Under constant pressure they could not sustain a prolonged assault and they melted away into the public to rise again at another date. Shots still rang out here and there but by noon the third day the capitol along with the city was under USB command. Taskforce Dugan had been a success. As for now Dugan would create a provisional government until the entire situation could be established. His immediate attention was now focused on 2nd MEF’s assault on Kaliningrad Oblast.

Kaliningrad Oblast

Just as the 1st MEF had done in Lithuania so too would 2nd MEF do in Kaliningrad. However instead of two equally sized forces, the main force would consist of many more troops for its assault on the capitol while a much smaller unit would attack the rest of Riptide’s naval forces at Baltlysk. 20,000 men would begin the assault on the capitol within the hour while the remaining ten would assault the naval port and if possible capture any vessels. Chances were however that the navy would see this coming and scuttle as many as humanly possible. Still there was the slight chance that like during Operation Clean-up the navy would be sleeping. Both assaults would begin at exactly 12 am. With information gathered from the assaults in Lithuania, it was presumed that the most effective attacks began at night which provided yet another advantage for the average USB soldier.

A light snow had shaded Kaliningrad a beautiful white. The serene little city however was barricaded, blocked, and ready for a fight. It was midnight when the first rockets signaled the beginning of the battle. Multiple MLRS’s let loose a devastating barrage of firepower. As the barrage lifted armor and infantry rushed forward in hopes of using shock as a weapon. They were met however be fierce small arms resistance. With the advance slowed self propelled guns, mines, and anti-tanks weapons began to inflict heavy casualties. The attack was bogged down but broke the initial city defenses with the support of aircraft from the September Fleet. Another barrage laid waste to the outer rim of the city however this caused much more harm than good. The cover provided made every inch of ground worth its distance in blood. Street fighting of every kind ensued. Hidden anti-tank guns became a devilish tool erupting at point-blank ranges. Fires became utterly dangerous. The attack came to a grinding halt when in the middle of the city the defenders counter attacked with hidden armor. Although slightly pushed back the tanks were quickly disposed of but caused enough damage for a small withdrawal. The main entrance seemed well protected.

The smaller unit attacking Baltlysk was having similar success. They approach up the narrow strip of land provided easier than thought however it did give enough warning to the navy to begin scuttling their ships. With the element of surprise gone the soldiers began a mad dash to the naval yards. The initial run had much success yet when the navy began unloading their rather large caliber guns at point blank things became somewhat messy. The leading armor units were disposed of with horrific speed. Once again the naval jets from the September Fleet had to be called into to silence these huge guns. The soldiers watched in amassment the fighter planes dodging AA and strafing the planes. They all watched as explosions erupted from intercepted missiles and ones not intercepted. As that went on the attack continued. The main entrance was quickly breeched but heavy resistance was encountered inside. Casualties began to mount before the main complexes were secured. The firing from the naval guns stopped and the only thing in the air were a few choppers from the fleet pouring on close air support. After a short time of close quarters it became apparent that the remaining fleet had no chance. Still most had either been scuttled or destroyed. The taskforce secured only one battleship and a number of smaller escort vessels. The remaining sailors were captured without much dispute. The taskforce than began to head north again to support the main group at Kaliningrad.

By night the fighting had died down to almost nothing. Probing attack would continue all night but another plan was being hatched. In the morning a small unit would move across the bay and assault the city from its underbelly while the main force shifted gears to the middle and northern sectors of the city. The early morning showed promising as the water in the bay was calm. The landing craft, which were of poor construction, made their way to their destination under a massive smokescreen. The smokescreen was laid across the entire front in hopes of not giving away the attack. The assault on the northern sector began in earnest with hardly any gains in ground. At around 10 AM the assault began withering away at the defenders and the line broke. Rapid gains were made between this time. The defenders began to slowly break and run. The raft assault had made their way into the city but came under fierce fire from well concealed positions. The initial assault was bogged down but quickly recovered and progressed with surprise and numbers. The lead elements quickly found a whole and were in a most precarious position, the middle of the city. At the same time, around 2 PM, the main defensive line broke and a full scale rout ensued. This group was than intercepted by the assault force and trapped. Encircled they quickly surrendered arms. By 5 PM the rest of the city was secure. The prisoners told intelligence that the remaining cities would fall much easier, most of the time with no fight at all. Most of the population didn’t seem to mind the invasion. The government had let them down and they were madder at the defenders than the attackers. It was only the fanatics that fought. By noon the next day the second taskforce had arrived and they began to secure the remainder of the country.

Within a week three cities were controlled with out a fight. In the week that followed, 2 more cities fell both with minor fights. By the end of the month the country was firmly in USB hands. The country was silent and still, waiting for the next move.

Aftermath: Operation Dual Spear

Swaziland

8th Army was continuously being flown in from Zimbabwe to take command of security and patrol roles in the major cities. The 9th Airborne had secured the remaining large scale cities within the next month and a half. Little resistance was met from these cities, however minor firefights continue to this day. During its time between the failure of the local government and the invasion by USB forces Swaziland became a breeding ground for warlords and terrorist. The nation, by the time of the USB intervention, had been near chaotic civil war to control the government. The resistance met at the capitol was thought to be more widespread however most forces that stood in USB’s path dwindled down and became leaderless forces that meant no significant harm to USB troops in the country. There continues to be terrorists attack yet the number of killed have slowly decreased with the involvement from 8th Army. The Army Corp of Engineers has begun to install programs that work with the local populace along side civil affairs units to rebuild and create jobs for the new peoples of USB. Once this new program became valid, a new government was set up, one that would keep peace until the small country could be incorporated in the USB system. Reconstruction would take some time as it was more than houses that needed repair. The new program went as far as to deal with the ever increasing aids epidemic that had plagued most of South Africa for a number of years.

What was left of the Swaziland military was discharged and free to return home. They could, if they so desired, join the newly forming USB 10th Army. Although these soldiers were treated fairly, those caught in acts of terrorism were often dealt with by a firing squad. The entire operation lasted slightly less than 3 months. It cost USB 187 soldiers killed and 700 wounded. The cost in enemy life is estimated at 1,778 dead and 4,509 wounded. By the end of the fourth month the 9th Army is to being pulling out and allowing the 8th Army full control until the 10th Army is set up.

Lithuania

After the capture of Vilnius the country was in compete control of USB forces. Although slight resistance continued this quickly degenerated into mild protests and marches on the capitol. Once it became obvious that Brink’s military intentions in Lithuania were non existent the fighting presumably stopped. It than turned into a more political debate. The country wanted to be self reliant, with its own capitol, not to be ruled by a president half way across the globe. This fierce debate raged for many months, ending with mild violence among the protesters. After the situation became dire, President Ovambo, days before leaving office, issued a statement giving Lithuania semi-autonomy. This quieted protests for the time being. It would be up to the next president to deal with the matter in full. For the time being the majority of effort was brought upon the capitol itself, rebuilding and reconstruction. With semi-autonomy, they would deal with this problem themselves while they too got to dig into the treasury of USB.

Just as in Swaziland the soldiers of the federal army was honorably discharged yet free to join the USB army. The September Fleet would remain in port until further notice. The operations cost the 1st MEF 303 killed and 409 wounded. The enemy lost an estimated 400 killed and another 3,222 wounded.

Kaliningrad Oblast

Kaliningrad Oblast has had a history of violence against foreign nations. Although the terms of this government were highly different the outcome was not that different. It took the 2nd MEF four more months to completely secure the entire country. Even so units from the 1st MEF had to be called in for support. Insurgency became a major problem and continues to harass forces stationed in major cities. Kaliningrad was on the verge of becoming a quagmire and was only saved from total chaos when incorporated into Lithuania. Still remaining Kaliningrad Oblast it was under the same government style as Lithuania. This slightly lessened the terrorist attacks against check points and strongholds. The fact that the people would not be suppressed sat well with the government officials although many did not want to be under the control of any nation besides them. Trying to keep the balance between peace and safety is the hardest task for an enforcement unit, and it continues to be a problem even to this day. Just recently the 2nd MEF has begun Operation Ice to located and destroy local insurgencies. However with the installment of many new programs the level of destruction has somewhat decreased.

The army was not discharged but siphoned into the 1st and 2nd MEF to help in security. The operation has to day cost the USB 788 lives and 5,330 wounded. The enemy has suffered an estimated 3,292 dead and some 6,246 wounded.

Lichtenstein

The Independent Republic of Lichtenstein had its very first elections this month, which is a month after the revolution. By a landside, Kass won the elections. The constitution and bill of rights was drawn up and signed that same day. The government instantly sprang to life, and jobs were restored. The transition had gone beautifully. The country has made its stance as strictly pacifist. Surrounded on all sides by the military giant that is North Germania has either sealed its fate or its long lasting security. The total loss of life during the revolution is said to be zero. This left the entire population immensely proud. The country remains to this day an industrial giant in ratio with its size. It also had deep connections with USB and seeks friendly relations as well as trade agreements with North Germania.
