An airbase, in Squornshelan Russia...

The fleet of AN-124 and C-130J transports bumped down on the runway. On board, were elements of the newly formed Neuvo Rican Army Group: North, heading for those Andrehervian territories that were under the claim of the Neuvo Rican empire.

Field Marshal Vasquez was the commander of the force, and his Aide was Driaznik - who had been in the Neuvo Rican army when it left Russia all those years before, having ceded territory to Celtayoshi. Now, 560,000 Neuvo Rican troops were moving in, and in airbases - that had been kindly authorised for Neuvo Rican use by the Squornshelan government - all across Squornshelan russia, troops were disembarking and grouping into armoured columns, to take back what was rightfully part of the Neuvo Rican empire from the Defunct Andrehervian powers.

NEUVO RICAN ORBAT:

Over 400,000 troops were now in the new Russian territories. Ulan Ude had been proclaimed the capital of 'Neuvo Rican Siberia'...

Vasquez looked at the television screen. Outside it was snowing, and the light was poor, but one of the few half decent townhouses in Ulan Ude made a perfect HQ. Taking a swig of the vodka Driaznik had reccommended he tried to pay attention to the television screen...

It was the NRBC...

"Neuvo Rican troops have swept like a plague through the newly annexed Siberian lands."...Plague? 'Bloody Mexicans' he thought, (NR Mexico has a greater degree of free speech) ...In Skovorodno, light opposition from enemy partisans was brutally crushed. Those who surrendered have been flown to the Neuvo Rican Brazilian lands for interrogation. As I speak, here on the shores of lake Baikal, I am already receiving reports of heavy fighting in the westernmost province...

Vasquez flicked off the TV and reached for the phone...

"Yes, get me Driaznik, what's this about fighting in the west?"...

"Shit!" Sergei cried out when the bullets flew over his head. He knew they were close due to the whipping sound they made when they passed his ears at supersonic speeds. To his left, he saw Ivan fire one of the RPG-29s (http://world.guns.ru/grenade/gl04-e.htm) at the approaching Nuevo Ricans, having slinged his AK-103 (http://world.guns.ru/assault/as05-e.htm) on his back. To his right, Dimitri was busy firing the PK (http://world.guns.ru/machine/mg07-e.htm) light machine gun at the Nuevo Rican infantry, who mowed down the defenders. Sergei had his own AK-103, locked, loaded and ready to fire. So was the GP-30 (http://world.guns.ru/grenade/gl05-e.htm) underslung grenade launcher. Spotting an enemy officer advancing through the debris- and smoke-filled alley, he aimed and fired a spray of nine 7.62x39mm rounds against the enemy.

Sergei, Ivan, Dimitri and the rest of the defenders were members of the reserve forces, defending their city against the invaders. Currently, they were taking cover inside what was once a 16-story shopping mall, hiding in the ruins and taking pot-shots at the enemy. They had about sixty defenders in the mall, including three snipers armed with Druganovs (http://world.guns.ru/sniper/sn18-e.htm). These snipers were now taking out the officers and NCOs they could see, while the rest of the defenders, armed with AK-103s, PKs, AKS-74Us and RPG-29s took out infantry and vehicles. The Nuevo Ricans would pay for their trespass into Andrehervian territory.

The resistance wasn't supposed to be that bad. Sure, what could a few Kalashnikov wielding dirt farmers do? Thought colonel Mendez as the bullets pinged against the burnt out wreckage of a car next to him. An officer ran towards his fireteam, but was shot in the leg and fell down.

Next to Mendez a private shouted for air support into her radio. All that air command had spared so far was an Mi-2 helicopter, which had been blown out of the sky with ease.

----

Away from the action, Vasquez had flown into the small heliport outside of Skovorodno that was securely in Neuvo Rican hands. Already, a plan was being drawn up for this troublesome city.

Ok, what forces do we have in the area... exactly? All those vague reports given in the helicopter flight had become tedious.

Around the building, over 5230 troops with 88 tanks, 23 of which have been knocked out. Air support is still establishing across this territory, so it is out - given that by the time bombers arrive from Squornshelan airbases this whole thing will have ended.

Get the bombers in anyway and what about Artillery? Enquired Vasquez, sighing at the seeming incompetence of the regional commander...

Setting up now Sir

Good, lay a smoke screen and go in ... this may not exactly be the jungle, but urban warfare is our second priority. Let's show these people we mean business.

-----

Back at the city, the fight was escalating. Defenders were dropping like flies, but there seemed to be an endless supply of these enemies, two stepped forward every time one fell. This Hydra would have to be dealt with.

Mendez, turned to the south to see the artillery open up. 'Don't fall short... Don't fall short' He muttered through gritted teeth. This had been a problem with the Neuvo Rican artillery in the past, and now was not the time for the problem to recur.

Mendez hit the deck, as the shells thudded into no mans land and he swore as lumps of earth showered down on him. At least now the tanks will be harder to see, he thought, peering out from cover to examine the seriousness of the problem.

The smoke gave Neuvo Rican heavy infantry a chance to move in for the kill. A line of houses, mostly intact, bar the odd tank crater here and there played host to the troops as they entered with M16A1 rifles, complete with a bayonet fitting.

The lead troop kicked down a door, and moved in, looking from side to side and forward. At the end of the corridor he rounded the corner and saw a child sitting down. "Hey!... get out of here!" he yelled, and to his surprise the child drew a makarov pistol and shot him in the chest, he fell injured to the floor. A second troop rounded the corner... a sergeant with a desert eagle, and blasted three shots at the boy before moving to the windows to try and get a better angle at the enemy. This slow advance had to get faster if this operation was to be regarded a success...

-----

Snipers were now in the area too. Contingents of the 4th Jungle Warfare unit from Brazil had arrived by helicopter and were preparing to use superior rifles against the enemy in the building. Except the smoke still hadn't cleared ... what were those idiots at high command thinking?

The losses amongst the defenders were staggering. They simply couldn't match the Neuvo Rican firepower. Not that they weren't trying.

Neuvo Rican heavy infantry had poured into the city and had taken residence in a series of civilian homes. A group of Andrehervian rebels came forth wielding RPG-7's and RPG-29's. There were twelve in all, and they all aimed for the row of houses. Three...two...one! Twelve rockets flew simultaneously into the houses in an improvised sort of MLRS.

The somkescreen had been playing havoc with the defenders' accuracy; that and their weaponry. Much of it was outdated or ill-maintained, but there was a core of men and women equipped with modern weaponry. The defenders had by and large stopped aiming, and simply sprayed the cloud of smoke randomly with automatic weapons fire. A makeshift barricade composed largely of furniture had been built up, and the line was being held by troops ranging from seven years old to seventy. Just as diverse as the people themselves were the weapons they carried: AK-103, AK-74, AK-47, and AK-101 assault rifles, the RPG-7, RPG-16, and RPG-29, Kalashinov machine guns, bolt-action rifles, sniper rifles, and anti-tank rifles. Grenades, some as much as fifty years old, freshly made gas bombs and Molotov cocktails, baseball bats, sharpened sticks, rocks, ancient shotguns and muskets, and all manner of pistols and handguns. A few dozen anti-personnel mines had been layed down in front of the barricade to discourage enemy advances as well. All across the line, defenders fired desperately into the screen of smoke...

Skovorodno...

The Neuvo Rican snipers had set up in the rubble on the top floor of an old building, and were emptying off rounds at those enemies who had RPGs. The unit of snipers was lead by Sergeant Cortez, who had an excellent view of the battlefield.

"Over there, north end of the barricade" he shouted at one of his troops, having seen a man with a rocket launcher about to fire at a tank, that was picking it's way through the rubble towards the barricade.

"I see him..." the sniper fired, but the man dissapeared in smoke, as the massive gun on the tank fired at the same time, towards the centre of the barricade.

Soon, another two tanks came into view of the Sniper's hide, they were emptying off rounds at the barricade, making short work of the hastily built barrier. Further back, an automatic grenade launcher had set up, and was firing over the barricade. Four IFVs also soon appeared, with APCs following cautiously.

-----

"Excellent" Vasquez listened as Sergeants relayed news of the battle to him. "Keep going at the barricade, the morale of these 'defenders' will shatter when the bombers arrive, if it hasn't already"... "And what of the heavy infantry we sent in?"

"We have not received a report yet, we are expecting one immediately"

-----

The truth of the matter was that the radioman was dead, and the radio buried under a pile of rubble. The heavy infantry had taken another house, but had no communication with HQ. Four had died when the rockets hit, another had been injured, and had gone with a healthy troop to find the nearest field hospital. The remaining 14 now pushed through the housing, trying to get an angle on their attackers...

OOC: Sergeant Cortez? Do you play TimeSplitters? i love that series.

IC: The RPG unit was taking heavy losses from the sniper team. One spotted the snipers and fired off a last rocket. However, the rest of the unit was out of rockets and fell back. Five were dead, two lay on the ground, abandoned and dying, and two of the escaping troops were badly injured from the heavy calibre rounds.

The makeshift barricade had been penetrated in several locations by Neuvo Rican armored spearheads. Many of the defenders had deserted the line, only to be gunned down by enemy machine guns. The professionals, however, either surrendered or kept fighting. They knew from experience you couldn't outrun a tank's guns.

There were only a few trained medics and nurses among the Andrehervians, and they were under constant pressure from the legion of casualties. Confusion and chaos reigned, and the unscrupulous were taking the opportunity to loot abandoned homes. One unfortunate would-be looter dashed into a house occupied by Neuvo Rican infantry: he was shredded by their fire.

A young girl of fifteen, Tamara Ivanova, rushed to join the fight at the barricade. She picked up a gas bomb, lit it, and threw it at an incoming tank. It exploded against the side of the turret. The tank's machine gun opened fire, but Tamara ducked behind the barricade. The bullets smashed into an old chest-of-drawers, sending wood splinters flying everywhere. Tamara picked up a beer glass and threw it with malice at the tank. It shattered harmlessly off the side.

Then a nearby soldier fell, a rocket launcher clutched in his hands. Tamara crawled over and picked up the weapon. She took careful aim from cover behind an old mattress, and fired. The recoil from the launcher knocked her off her feet. She got up painfully to watch the rocket explode upon the side of the tank. The three-barreled launcher had one last rocket in it, and she fired this one, again falling to the ground. The rocket crashed into the tank's turret, spraying red-hot metal fragments everywhere. But still, the tank fired upon near-helpless Andrehervian militia.

She looked around for a weapon, dodging the occasional shot fired at her. Then she saw a wounded man. One of his arms was hanging on by only a thread of flesh. Ignoring the nauseous feeling in her stomach, she bent down and gave him a morphine shot, then tore off a strip of the man's uniform and used it to bandage the gaping wound. Looking on, she saw a time bomb. She set the weapon for 20 seconds, and climbed over the barricade with the bomb in hand. She rushed forward, but was struck by machine gun fire from the tank. She saw blood gushing out of a wound in her right arm. She gritted her teeth and got back to her feet. The girl hobbled over to the tank and slapped the bomb on and set it. Then she rushed back towards the barricade, and climbed over with difficulty. Behind her, she heard a deafening explosion.

ooc: I was wondering where I'd heard that name before...

ic:

There was a deafening explosion inside the tank, smoke filled the small space, and all that could be heard was the sound of flames. Dazed and confused, he managed to flee the vehicle through the emergency hatch. He staggered a few metres before the tank blew up, causing an IFV to swerve as it continued forward, determined to finish off the enemies. Orellano coughed and staggered towards the dim outline of the barricade. He heard the clatter of a Kalashnikov on the far side of a gap in the defences, so he drew his desert eagle and fired four rounds at the dim figure in the distance before slumping on the near side of the barricade. Now in amongst the smoke, the tanks became more frequent... soon infantry were storming the barricade around him, not paying any attention.

All of a sudden a low roar filled the air, and three shadows went darting across the dull clouds above. Only moments later the entire far side of the battlefield appeared to burst into a massive fireball, sending masonry splintering across the area, and adding yet more smoke to the already poor visibility.

---

Mendez and his troops picked a way across the barricade, to find it nearly deserted. A frightened defender shot a burst of automatic fire before trying to run off, but soon found himself on the receiving end of a burst from and M16K SMG.

"Secure the area!"Yelled Mendez, as kalashnikov fire began to come from the windows of ruined houses...

The infantry began to storm the buildings, with tank fire occasionally obliterating any areas where there was still resistance. The IFVs were now beginning to move down the street, destroying anything that got in the way. The town centre was within striking distance...
---

The sniper teams had scattered, following the rocket attack that had taken out two of their best marksmen. Now with flash suppressors, the various teams had set up in rubble all around the battlefield, and were waiting for one of the Andrehervians to come to one of the many windows.

The barricade was all but deserted by now. Even the bravest soldiers had quit the line, Tamara among them. A handful of defenders, mostly the crazy or those too badly wounded to escape, still held on, still kept firing until silenced by the Neuvo Rican infantry pouring over the barricade.

Tamara had left with a group of about fifteen to twenty other soldiers, boys and men she did not know. Many were just teenagers, one looked about twelve. And others who looked liked they belonged in nursing home, much less a battlefield. Only about half the group had guns, and several were wounded.

A handsome boy of about eighteen quickly took command of the situation. "My name is Julien," he said, his voice fearless. "I am a militia member, and I will lead you. The motherland has never fallen to invaders. It is up to us to keep it so, my comrades. For the motherland we live, and for the motherland we die. We are going to take refuge in that subway tunnel."

There was no opposition to his order. The group quickly followed. All went well, until a volley of shots rang out. Tamara and the others looked around in fear, but there was no muzzle flash. One of the older men in the group had been pierced through the head by a bullet, and blood shot out of the wound like a cannon. "Ignore that, we must get to shelter," said Julien. Most of the group was rooted to the spot, but further sniper fire encouraged them to move. The group rushed down into the tunnel. Tamara felt dizzy from blood loss. There was one medic with the group, and he approached her.

Tamara tried to wave him away. "Don't be silly, girl. You've lost a lot of blood," said the medic. He gave her a shot of morphine, wrapped a triangular bandage around the wound on her arm, and gave her an injection of blood plasma. "Don't worry, we are safe down here," said the medic reassuringly. "Thank you, comrade," said Tamara. The medic nodded and went on to a wounded boy near by. She could only hope he was right...

Mendez stood watching the battle, sporadic fire here and there. He turned and looked at the barricade, smoking and littered with dead. Suddenly a wounded defender picked up the strength to level his assault rifle and fire a burst. Mendez was shot through the face, dying instantly.

More Neuvo Rican Army helicopters had now arrived on the scene and were heading straight for the enemy positions. Neuvo Rican Heavy infantry had surrounded the end of the tunnel, and were pouring fire into the small area. Now the commanding officer was Colonel Rodriguez.

He was not as competent as Mendez, but he still had the respect of his troops. Rodriguez swore as an RPG streaked from the darkness in the tunnel and hit a landrover, sending the flaming bodywork about five feet into the air. A lump of metal from the side with 'Ejercito' written on it landed only feet away from Rodriguez.

Troops were now firing rifle grenades into the tunnel, waiting for something heavier to come into action. Their prayers were answered, a Challenger two tank positioned itself at the entrance. Although it found itself subject to a few poorly placed RPGs, it had to shoot the roof of the tunnel once, and a large cloud of dust emerged from the tunnel...

------------

By now the Skovorodino was the new target. Twelve C-130J Hercules transport aircraft buzzed above the town, and now 1100 paratroops disembarked into the town centre, heading behind enemy lines...

The Russian group threw themselves to the ground as the Neuvo Ricans began to fire down the subway tunnel. A few of the Russians had assault rifles, there were a couple of RPGs, and one machine gun. The Russians opened up on the Neuvo Ricans, but when the rifle grenades began to fly and the tank rolled up to the entrance, the group scattered in both directions, leaving behind the dead and the wounded, who numbered nine. The tank's shot collapsed the ceiling over their bodies, crushing the wounded.

------------------------

In the square of Skovorodino a hellstorm of fire opened up upon the parachuting soldiers. The city's SAM batteries had long since deteriorated, but there were still quite a few AA batteries, and these were firing wildly at the paratroops and their transports. The regular soldiers were also opened fire with rifles and machine guns, and soon it was literally raining death over Skovorodino. But then, an unexpected event took place. The populace of the city had long tired over their oppressive local warlord, Simon Petrovi, and were now siding with the Neuvo Rican army. A vast mob rushed Petrovi's army, overwhelming the soldiers and antiaircraft gunners. Others took wounded Neuvo Rican paratroopers to shelter and tended their wounds. A vast mob formed in front of Petrovi's palace, barely held at bay by the warlord's soldiers.
Neuvo Rica

This change in mood from the locals was just what the Neuvo Ricans had wanted. The paratroopers found that most resistance had been dealt with in the town centre by the time they arrived. Most still scattered to find Petrovi's henchmen and put and end to them. Now the troops from the barricade met up with them. Locals began to cheer as Neuvo Rican Challenger two tanks rolled into the square.

Marshal Vasquez was soon at the fron himself, talking to those who had finally toppled Petrovi. In the distance, Automatic fire could be heard as the dregs of resistance were chased through the streets by angry and well armed paratroopers. Two CH-47 helicopters also landed in the town square and began to distribute medical supplies to those who had helped.

Petrovi himself was nowhere to be seen. Nobody was sure, but a helicopter had destroyed a convoy leaving town earlier that day, and many thought Petrovi had died in the inferno that followed.
------

All was well and good in the town centre, but back at the tunnel, those who had survived had to be found, and killed. A private stood in the tunnel entrance, with a white flag and read aloud...

"The fighting has ended, you are free to exit and you will be treated with charity and kindness. Surrender now and you will be cared for, all I need is for you to come out with your hands up" He knew that this wasn't going to happen, and if it did - they would all be arrested and executed. But after a few more minutes of explaining the virtues of surrender the man ended with "you have a ten minute opportunity to surrender, the choice is in your hands".
[NS]Kreynoria
04-04-2006, 22:25
Continuing to fight was not an option. The group was poorly armed and nearly ammo-less, fatigued, and many were wounded. They had little food or medical supplies and even less water. Julien told the group to lay down their arms and exit the tunnel. Now they could only hope the rumours Petrovi had spread about the invaders weren't true...
