Saudi Arabia 2010, a brief overview

Saudi Arabia has began to change even more-so than it was in 2005. It's government was becoming stronger, and the king losing much of his power, and becoming more of a figurehead. The strive toward democracy following the 2005 Saudi Municipal elections had become stronger, with Saudi Arabia becoming a Democraticly elected government a very strong possiblity in the near future.

It's Capital punishment system had changed, now forbidding Amputations and prosecution of homosexuals. The Nation is still the world's largest supplier of Oil, and new oil field discoveries lead to the assumption that the countries oil supplies will not be letting up soon. To ease the nation into not depened on oil exports, the private sector has grown considerably, and it's commerical appeal is becoming more apperent. The large unemployement rampant throught the country was being reduced by more military applicants and the continuing work on Riyadh, with the mission on making the city more "Commericaly appealing", with more higher-value apartments, new Office highrises to Implement Hope Tower, new factories and electronic production areas, and a revised city center with Hotels, Shops, and Malls.

The Migrant workers from Africa and southeast Asia have been either stopped(Due to stronger immigration laws and monitering of the border) or found long-lasting jobs in cities industrial sectors or on Animal Hearding farms.

Better relations with Israel are on the government's agenda, and the Ban of Jews or people with the stamp of Israel has been lifted. The Government is sometimes criticized for its decision deemed "Against the Qur'an", such as allowing public Cinema's to be opened. The Mutaween has further been criticized by human rights groups after several highly-publicized incidents, and has lost much of its power, including some members being arrested for sexually assaulting schoolgirls.

It's main defense concern is Iran, as their regime is frowned upon and though of as unpredictable and worrying, as they can threaten the oil industry in the persian gulf. Saudi Arabia still relies on Western Military Equipment, though is attempting to focus on producing its own equipment and buying systems and vehicles produced in neighboring countries.

Saudi Arabia's has maintained a close unofficial friendship with the UAE, along with France, the United States(Including the american-helped Iraqi and Afghan governments), Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Yemen. The Nation has been cited in criticizing its neighbors for supporting and allowing terrorism, and has lost some credibility in its islamic friendship, being said to "Change to please the west."

Army

In the past five years the total manpower of the army has increased to 102,000, following a large effort to recruit unemployed Teenagers to quell the unemployment situation. It's annual understrengh do to a lack of Technicians and NCO's has been largely delt with. The Seperate National guard has been adapted into the military to create a large recruiting pool. The AMX tanks are gradually being replaced by M1A2's(Some 430 are currently in service, and is trying to purchase the tusk), and it still operates M60E3's and M113's. The nations field guns still remain to be the American and French 155mm self propelled howitzers and 105mm towed guns, and it still uses the American TOW. The army is recieving it's final orders of the Bradley fighting vehicle, and is currently looking for Attack Helicopters. It has also shown keen intrest in purchasing an upgraded version of the T-90S.

Navy
The Saudi navy has been expanded to fufill it's role as a protector of the Persian gulf, and to decrease rely on the American 5th fleet. It currently operates 8 PCG-1 corvettes, 5 F-2000 Frigates, and two F-2000S's. It has also purchased two more Lafayette class frigates, bringing it's operational fleet of the type to five. It still operates the three Sandown-class minesweepers from england. Currently the navy only operates midget subs, and is looking to buy larger attack submarines. The navy is also showing mild intrest in the Aegis system as well.

Air Force
The Air forces main planes are some one-hundred-sixty-two F-15C fighters, along with 72 Eurofighter typhoons delivered in 2006. The air force also operates some 58 Tornado Ground attack fighters. In other combat aircraft, it operates small rotary aircraft and C-130's. The five E3 aircraft bought in 1981 are become outdated, and the Air Force is looking to replace them. It is also looking to buy additional Eurofighters and is also looking into the F-16 operated by the UAE.

OOC- It already happened in RL, which would be 4-5 years ago.

After looking some more, the french are also trying to sell the Dassault Rafale to Saudi Arabia as the 4th part of the Al Yamamah programme(Which brought Saudi Arabia the F-15C and F-15D, the Tornado's, and the Eurofighter)

IC: We would be very interested to buy more Eurofighters, around the total of 45 to replace the air forces ageing F-5E's and a few of the older F-15D's. The type we have looked into is the RAF-designed Typhoon F2 to for our needs, and are deeply interested in a contract to purchase them.

Although we planned upon upgrading them, we have decided to buy a replacement. The price of one should come to around 875 million USD at a reduced cost.

While we understand your stance in Somolia, we do not nessicaraly agree with it, but operation in the Red sea is offered, although not jointly.

OOC-Iran and Saudi arabia have been in an arms race since 1984, and you aquiring Eurofighters and Leapords does not help the situation(When it goes publicized at least, thats why Saudi arabia is going after new equipment) and the Saudi regime looks at Iran with distrust and dislike to begin with.

Australia has a great need for the Red Sea at this time. Perhaps Saudi Arabia, could sell oil to Australia, as our own supply and logistics to Somalia is currently being hindered do to length of the voyage and our TDP plants are not able to issue the demand of our needs. Australia would like to purchase 10 million barrels per day for the next twenty years.

(Same as the USA imports per day!)

Yes, that deal would be acceptable, but the Saudi Arabian Western Fleet shall moniter the happenings in the sea, as it is its prime defender.

At the Saudi Arabian Institute of technology Makar Lab in the Capital, around a dozen Scientists are beginning to devise easier techniques to produce Anti-matter at a much cheaper price than it currently is. The Project is part of a larger Plan by Saudi Arabia to develope the use of Anti-matter as an energy source in the future. The finilized report of the testing should be finished in 2020 and supplied to the goverment.

(I plan to reasearch Anti-matter as energy for around 2080-2100ish)
