Steaming through the Sea of Japan, a substantial force was moving at 25 knots towards Primorskiy Kray, an Andrehervian holding which had fallen into disarray along with the rest of the once-proud nation. The Andrehervians were friends of the Realm, and it seemed only fit that it should do its best to restore peace and order to the lands which once were Andrehervia. For that purpose, a substantial part of the Cottish 5th Fleet was moving towards Primorskiy Kray. Two CVBGs, three AABGs, three Destroyer Squadrons, two Frigate Squadrons and a Submarine Patrol Force from that fleet made up the task force along with a Naval Medical Group and two Naval Logistics Groups from the Naval Auxiliary.

The fighters from the carriers were providing a constant CAP over the large mass of steel moving through the water, while subs moved forward of the group and ensured that no potential enemies would get a chance to threaten the task force. Aboard the lead ship, a Enterprise class carrier, the Admiral looked at the large digital positioning map. They were roughly 120 nautical miles from Vladivostok, where the local leaders were said to be located. Apparently, the whole area was under martial law, with soldiers defecting and gangs and fractions controlling everything, keeping the area under a reign of terror. That was not very nice, so the task of the roughly 38,000 Marines carried in the two AABGs would be to stop them and return law and order to the area. When a bridgehead had been secured, three Brigades, five Regiments and a few Rapid Response Forces from the Army would be moved in via ship, having been rerouted after leaving Australia. They were to be there in a few days. Ample time for the Marines to get a beachhead secured.

At 0450 local time, the first Cottish ships entered Andrehervian territorial waters. The battleplan was simple. One AABG would steam into Vladivostok and take control there, while another one landed near Nakhodka, an important port city. The Marines would take control there, hopefully with the help of the remaining Andrehervian forces, and then use the two important ports to land additional troops and supplies before heading inland to take over the two important cities Artyom [50 kms from Vladivostok] and Ussuriysk [111 kms from Vladivostok], the only places where any real resistance could exist. There were a number of smaller cities and towns too, but those four mentioned were the important ones which needed to be controlled if there was to be any real chance of success in assuming control of Primorsky Kray. However, before they landed any troops, the Cots would first land a small party of hand-picked officers to try to negotiate a deal with the officials which were said to remain in Vladivostok.

The MC-11B Dagger transport aircraft took off from one of the carriers and flew the few miles to Vladivostok. The six officers in question were all armed with P33 sidearms and dressed in bulletproof vests and helmets, and it sure was needed. Gunshots, explosions and general commotion was heard all over the city as they were brought to the site of the few surviving leaders. The head of the Cottish delegation was a kommandørkaptein in the Cottish Navy, and a skilled diplomat. The officer greeted the civilian leader, who looked like hell, and was answered with suspicion and distrust. Still, he lead them into an untidy conference room which was crowded with paper and shattered glass and offered them a seat, which the officers accepted. The head of the delegation then started talking.

"Time is of the essence here sir, so I'll cut to the chase. The Realm has seen what is happening here, and remembering the long friendship between Cotland and Eppessinia, we wish to assist you in restoring law and peace."

"And how do I know that you don't intend to occupy us and make us your slaves?"

"We do intend to land substantial amounts of troops and to assume overall control of Primorsky Kray, but we offer you full autonomy in internal matters. It is in both our interests that we be allowed to land forces to restore law and order as quickly as possible."

"And who gets to rule?"

"For the moment, you sir. However, we will, once the situation has been stabilized, have general elections for the leadership."

The leader thought it over for a moment, then nodded.

"Very well. I will inform loyal forces that you'll arrive and instruct them not to open fire."

"Thank you sir. With your permission, we will take our leave and return to our ship to pass the word along."

The leader nodded and the officers left. After an exciting trip through the war-ravaged streets, they made it safely to the plane which waited for them and flew back to the carrier. Permission had been granted, and co-operation had been assured. Within the hour, Marines would start landing.

The first of the Marines were landed via CH-53N Super Stallion II, SH-86A Merlin and UH-95A Huey II helicopters while HLCACs, LCACs and LCM-8s went quickly into Vladivostok harbor, carrying the heavy equipment of the Marines. AH-92B Stalker gunships equipped with 70mm rockets and ammunition for their 30mm chaingun in the nose provided close air support for the landing troops while F-35B Rapiers flew overhead, armed with air-to-air missiles and 250kg laser-guided bombs for close air support.

The Marines dismounted from the helicopters quickly and took up positions. Their AG11A1 assault rifles (http://cotland.proboards59.com/index.cgi?board=smallarms&action=display&thread=1141481254) and MG49A1 squad automatic weapons (http://cotland.proboards59.com/index.cgi?board=smallarms&action=display&thread=1141481667) were loaded with live ammunition and in the hands of skilled marksmen who had orders to shoot if they felt threatened. A few civilians looked out from their hiding places as the advancing Marines started moving into the city, closely supported by the helicopters and the mighty guns of the battlecruisers, cruisers and destroyers off the shore.

A battalion totalling 800 dismounted Marines secured the perimeter for the landing craft and assembly area while two companies, 320 men started carefully entering the city, taking up positions and doing some reconnisance. Sniper teams also moved inland, quickly taking up positions on rooftops and buildings while looking for potential enemies. Anyone carrying weapons but not Andrehervian uniforms approaching the assembly area was shot, quickly, efficiently and silently by the Marine snipers, who had SG92A1 sniper rifles (http://cotland.proboards59.com/index.cgi?board=smallarms&action=display&thread=1141481364) fitted with 6.5x Mk.3 scopes which had range-finding lasers and could be switched between different displays: normal or thermal [efficient to 900 meters]; bipods, silencers and a laser pointer. Efficient weapons, capable of firing a 8.6x70mm round more than 1,100 meters with pin-point accuracy. Naturally, it all depended on the sniper, but only the best of the best were selected for the Marine Corps' sniper school, and even fewer graduated.

At H + 45 minutes, the first battalion started moving into Vladivostok itself. A total of 800 dismounted Marines, 20 M2008A1 Dingo APVs fitted with heavy weapons [MG15A1 HMG, MG26A1 HMG, or Mk.19 Mod 5 Automatic Grenade Gun] in the remote weapons station on top, 15 M2010A1 Bushmaster APVs with the same heavy weapon types as the Dingo fitted, 25 M2012A1 Marauder APCs with deadly 25mm chainguns and 10 M2017A1 Frog APCs [OOC: AAV7A1] with MG3A1 GPMGs fitted moved into the city, followed by a few armored command vehicles and armored electronic warfare vehicles, and a few scouts. It was a powerful, yet lightly armed unit which moved into Vladivostok. Fortunately, they could be supported by attack helicopters and planes in a matter of seconds, and within a few hours, tanks could help out too.

The battalion could split up into five smaller manouvering units, each numbering 160 men and a number of vehicles, for better tactical manouverability. That was going to be needed, so two companies seperated from the rest of the force and moved into a side street, constantly wary of enemy combatants, IEDs and snipers. The unit numbered 320 soldiers, 8 Dingos, 6 Bushmasters, 10 Marauders and 4 Frogs were moving down the street. The dismounts raided every building, looking for enemy combatants. They quickly and efficiently searched each room, most often by sticking their optical sights into a room and looking at the images in the HUD which was on the left eye on the orange visor each Marine wore as sunglasses. They looked a lot like sunglasses too, with the only exception being that they were orange and looked like they were made out of plastic. They were lightweight, easy to wear and discreetly plugged into the harddrive on each Marines' back via a thin fiberoptic wire from the back of the visor and down the Marine's back. The system was able to switch between normal, thermal and night vision modes, enabling it to be used at all times of the day and in all conditions. It was weather-proved to last in cold down to -40°C, and in heats of up to 55°C, having been tested in all kinds of conditions. The whole system was relatively expensive, but very efficient. It saved time and reduced the risk of the Marine being injured without any need for him to be.

Most of the rooms were empty, but in a building on the left of the road, in the fifth floor, a Marine sticking his rifle carefully across the bend saw straight into the face of an equally surprised insurgent carrying an AK-101. The Marine wasted no time and fired a 6.8mm round into the face of the insurgent, blowing his brains all over the plane. The gunshot rang out across the floor and alerted the other six insurgents hiding in the room. They got up quickly and tried to train their rifles on the Cottish Marines, who were now massing outside the room.

"Fyr være her!" [Fire in the hole!] the fireteam leader called out before he pulled out the plug on the G68 flashbang grenade and tossed it into the room. Two seconds later, a 180 decibel strong bang was heard. The Marines waited one second before they bursted into the room and took out four of the insurgents with three-round bursts, firing two shots in the chest and one in the head of each insurgent. The remaining two were punched down with the buts of the AG11s the men carried and ziptied quickly before they were searched for weapons, explosives and intelligence. Finding hardly anything, the Marines dragged the prisoners down and into the back of a waiting Dingo, where a Marine carrying an MP6A1 P90 submachine gun with 50 5.7x28mm rounds would watch them until they reached the assembly area. Meanwhile, the fireteam searched the room and found several documents, weapons and ammunition. The documents were taken by the fireteam leader while the weapons were destroyed.

The fireteam finished searching the house and moved onwards towards the city center. The resistance became more intense the further they moved inland, but eventually they reached the Victory Square, the center of the city and area of the government offices. The sight of fresh combat troops, dressed in different uniforms and armed with different weapons confused the former Andrehervians. They became even more confused when an officer came out with a megaphone and started talking.

"This is the Royal Cottish Marine Corps. We are here to restore peace and civil order to Primorskiy Kray. Lay down your weapons and return to your homes. No harm will come to you if you lay down your weapons and return to your homes. We do not wish to harm anyone, but we will not hessitate to take the actions we find necessary in order to restore peace and civil order. I repeat: lay down your weapons and return to your homes."

The message was repeated, and for a long time, all the people on Vladivostoks Victory Square stood still, dazzled by the news. Cottish Marines? In Vladivostok? What the...? Eventually, one man, probably not older than 20 threw his rifle down and walked away. His action started an instant trend, as many people dropped their weapons and headed homewards, several of them moving towards and past the Cottish Marines. However, a few remained and started raising their weapons. The movement was matched by the Marines, who had AG11s and MG49s aimed at the small band of hapless antiheroes quickly. Three of them took the hint and dropped their weapons and started walking away, but the remaining twenty-five didn't. They started shooting, but was picked down by Cottish Marines in a short but intense exchange of fire lasting 9 seconds. Three Cottish soldiers were wounded while all twenty-five enemies ended up dead, riddled by over a thousand rounds of all calibers: 6.8x43mm, 7.62x51mm, 8.6x70mm, 12.7x99mm, 15.5x115mm and even a few 25x255mm rounds. They were, without a doubt, dead.

This show of force was captured on film by a group of local camera crews, who had zoomed in on the group who fired a few shots at teh Cots before they were shot dead in an unholy barrage of projectiles. You could see the bodies be torn apart by the heavy machine guns and chainguns, while the repeated 6.8mm projectiles slamming into the corpses made a lot of holes and caused a lot of blood to spray out. It was a horrific sight for sure, as the bodies were quickly mauled by the barrage. It was a clear sign to the remaining rioters that the Cots meant business, and that fact of imminent death to anyone opposing the Cots, who said they were there to restore peace and order, disillusionized many of the rioters. They had no wish for death, especially not in the way the people at Victory Square had met it. Eight hours after the Cots had landed, the last of the explosions was heard, and apart from a few sporadic gunshots during the night, Vladivostok had once again become peaceful. Several insurgents had been captured and now spent the time in the cells of the main police station, which the Marines had occupied and turned into a command and detention center. They would be held for about a week before they would be released as a result of an amnesty from the Cottish admiral in charge of the operations first phase.

The Empire can only wish its Cottish allies the best of luck and fortune in this dangerous endeavor. Following the cessation of hostilities in the Pacific and the demobilization of our armed forces we will be unable to help but we do not feel our help shall be needed.

The Cottish Marines quickly assumed control over Vladivostok after the initial show of resolve and force, and helicopters ladened with food, water and medical personell started arriving. Support personell handed out the supplies to the people in need, while the Marines pressed onwards. The heavy equipment of the Marines had been landed now, and the Marines pressed onwards to Artem, a suburb of Vladivostok. The images of Cottish Marines stomping out resistance had been sent all over the territory, and virtually no one dared to openly attack the Cots. The few who did were shot dead.

In Nakhodka, another AABG landed its Marines, who met considerably less resistance than the men in Vladivostok. As such, the helicopters and LCMs quickly started bringing supplies to the city. The Mayor of Nadhodka even went public and praised the arriving Cots, calling them angels of mercy and godsent help. Happy with the praise, the Marines quickly moved inland and secured a bridgehead 40 kilometers inland, with elements of both MEUs linking up with each other at the town of Novoniezhino. Everything south of it had been secured, concluding phase one of Operation 'Artisk Lov'.

With the first phase concluded, the second began with the offloading of troops in both Vladivostok and Nadhodka, just as the plan dictated. Resistance was expected to be tougher as the Cots progressed inland, as local warlords were starting to appear. They had in their posession relatively modern equipment, stolen from the Andrehervian depots as the nation fell into disarray. Didn't really matter to the Cots. They had started landing Infantry Brigade 32 in Vladivostok and Infantry Brigade 27 in Nadhodka, with Rapid Response Units and paratroopers taking over maintaining law and order in the two large cities. Two Independent Regiments were waiting to be offloaded, while units from the Air Force were beginning to land at captured and cleared airfields and airports.

After 36 hours, the three brigades the Cots were landing [Infantry Brigades 27 and 32, Armored Brigade 15] had successfully landed, been organized and started moving inland. Their first objective was to capture the city of Ussuriysk, where a local warlord of Russian decent, Sergei Vlassovich had assumed control. He had under him some 30,000 men and 600 tanks, along with a few squadrons of fighters. The enemy Order of Battle looked something like this:

Elements of the ex-593rd Mechanized Infantry Division [4,000 soldiers, 20 T-90B MBT, 20 M109A6 SPH, 60 M2A3 Bradley IFV]
Elements of ex-564th Armoured Division [8,000 soldiers, 150 M1A2B Abrams MBT, 8 M48 Chapparal SAM, 20 ADATS AT, 100 M2A3 Bradley IFV, 40 Mav 5 APC]
Ex-95th Armoured Division [14,000 Infantry, 300 ST-21, 140 Warrior IFV, 120 AAV7A1 APC, 40 AS90 SPH, 40 M163A1 AAA, 40 Jaguar 2 AT, 20 Akrep recon vehicle]
Ex-24th Fighter Squadron [100 F/A-16D Fighting Falcon]
Ex-27th Fighter Squadron [300 Rafaele-B]
Ex-63rd Attack Squadron [20 A-10 Thunderbolt]

The Cots were up for a fight, but they depended on their equipment and men, as well as a numerical superiority. They intended to take out a few enemy advantages as well, and sent a group of fighters to take out enemy airfields and fighters.

The group consisted of F-14E Super Tomcats, F-37G Razors and F-39C Typhoons armed with air to air munitions [AIM-120D AMRAAMs, AIM-204B Dødsengels, AIM-216A IRIS-Ts and AIM-217A BVRAAMs], while a group of A-5D Vigilante bombers [armed with 500kg JDAM] escorted by EA-5F Vigilante EW aircraft [armed with AGM-88F AARGM] would take out enemy ground targets from high altitude to avoid the enemy AAA. The Cots would take great care in avoiding to engage civilian targets. All in all, the two groups had over 100 aircraft in them, with the fighter group being the most numerical with 18 F-14s, 28 F-37s and 24 F-39s.

The fighters flew in with their own radars on, trying to lure out the enemy. It worked to some extent, as a flight of 40 F-16Ds and 100 Rafaele-Bs came to greet them. At a que, the Cots launched their long-range missiles, the Dødsengels, at the incoming fighter group and turned their radars off. They were now flying on the instructions given to them via datalink from the powerful long-range radars of the ME-11C Dagger AWACS flying in relative safety over Vladivostok. A total of 100 Dødsengels flew at the enemy while the Cots moved forward with BVRAAMs ready. When they came within range, the Cots fired again, this time sending a hundred BVRAAMs against the enemy. A few missiles made it from the enemy too, and took out six fighters. Fortunately, most of the pilots managed to eject safely. Still, it was a virtual chicken shoot for the Cots, who flew in state of the art 4.5th and 5th generation fighters against older 3rd generation fighters. After an engagement lasting 30 minutes, the last enemy fighter was shot down and it was clear for the bombers to proceed. They flew at 40 - 55 thousand feet, dropping their JDAMs onto the eenmy airfields and assembly areas. The mission was a 100 % success, and whiped out the first warlords air power and some 30% of the enemy tanks and artillery. The next move would be the ground assault, scheduled for 0230 the following night.
Cotland
15-03-2006, 11:30
The assault on Ussuriysk commenced at 0231 hours with a short but intense artillery barrage against known enemy positions, obtained from the UAVs over the city. The barrage was made up of some 100 M8A1 Targa self-propelled howitzers firing their lethal 155mm shells from locations up to 35 kilometers away from the unfortunate recipients. The shells were followed by three ATACMS' loaded with propaganda leaflets, telling the defenders that they had no chance and that they would be treated well and be allowed to return to their homes immediatly if they lay down their arms and surrendered. The shelling helped 2,000 fighters decide, and the men wandered over to the Cottish positions and surrendered peacefully. They were taken behind the lines and into a makeshift camp where they were given a medical check, a blanket and coffee while their uniforms were taken by the Cots and burned. In 24 hours, they would be released with civilian clothes and a clean slate, being given the opportunity to start a brand new life.

Meanwhile, the Cots started their assault. Spearheading the advance was 300 M39A1 Mekhev II NGBTs and 360 M11A3 Viking CFVs, followed by 500 M18A1 Nelson APCs, 160 M11A2 Viking IFVs and 300 M2008A1 Dingo APVs, as well as various other units. All in all, 16,000 Cottish soldiers attacked Ussuriysk, supported by fixed-wing aircraft in the form of newly arrived A-89C Hammer CAS aircraft, FB-177A Barsuk fighterbombers and F-37C Razor multirole fighters; rotary-wing aircraft in the form of AH-92B Stalker attack helicopters, EH-60M Quick Fix electronic warfare helicopters, CH-47F Chinook transport helicopters fitted with M134A3 Miniguns and UH-60M Black Hawk utility helicopters fitted with M134A3 Miniguns; M8A1 Targa self-propelled howitzers, M777A2 LW155 towed howitzers, M142A2 HIMARS, and M270A2 multiple-launch rocket systems. It was a well-prepared battle, intended to show the other warlords what happened if they messed with the Cots.

After a battle lasting 90 minutes, the Cots had lost three tanks, nine IFV/CFVs, sixteen APCs and a number of support vehicles as well as nearly 400 men, while the enemy had lost some 6,000 men [KIA/MIA], 9,800 WIA and numerous vehicles FUBARed. Having sustained so heavy casualties, Vlassovich showed his lack of true experience when fighting something other than ragtag civilians [read: professional combat soldiers]. He set up machine gun nests and anti-tank weapons for a one heck of a trap. However, he forgot to cover his flanks, something the Cots took advantage of after having lost the better part of a platoon in the trap. Two platoons moved off to the right flank while three moved to the left and caught the enemy by surprise while a company of tanks rolled down the street where the enemy had set up their trap. The advanced heavy armor scheme of the Mekhev IIs repelled all RPGs the enemy fired while the 30mm ETC chaingun in the secondary turrets mowed them down. The 120mm ETC main gun was spared for clearing out buildings at point-blank range. This line of defense had been the only real organized line of defense, and from here on, the Cots encountered only small, unorganized pockets of resistance as they made their way to the palace where Vlassovich had taken up residence. The building was surrounded and pounded by the helicopters who fired bullets and 69.9mm rockets at the building.

While the building was being pounded, supply collumns were arriving and started handing out supplies to the civilians in need. They were very friendly, and calmed the civilians who had believed that the Cots were bloodthirsty avengers when they had arrived. That wasn't the case, as they were about to find out.

After a twelve-hour battle which cost the Cots some 700 men, the city was taken and Vlassovich secretly executed. It would be announced that Vlassovich had taken his own life by slitting his wrists and later cremated along with the other dead enemies. Ussuriysk was about to undergo a massive rebuilding which would employ many of the citizens and create work for them. For now, the Cots moved northwards, taking down more warlords as they went along. In a month, the military ground presence would have been trippled anyways.

Hostilities had finally ended after five months of raids and offensives against warlords and insurgents. It had cost the Cots some 3,000 soldiers and hundreds of helicopters, vehicles and aircraft. Still, they had prevailed. After the execution of the last of the warlords, it was time to settle down and rebuild Primorskiy Kray. The civilian populace were pleased with the end of the hostilities and the many billions of kroners which were poured into Primorskiy.

It was time for elections, and a politician from Artem won the election to the post of Chancellor, second only to the Governor which was appointed by the King in Oslo. Primorskiy Kray, or the Dominion of Sibir as it was known as officially, was to be a dominion under the Realm. It meant that while it was for the most part autonomous, the federal government controlled the military and diplomacy, as well as the currency and the federal law. It also had to abide to the Constitution of the Realm of Cotland. Apart from that, the Dominion of Sibir had control of everything else.

Before long, old buildings were being razed to the ground and replaced by new modern skyscrapers. Subway systems were being constructed, and the railway was vastly improved along with the roads. Along the coast, shipyards were being modernized and upgraded before being put to work, constructing ships. Fisheries were also constructed and fitted with highly modern equipment and machineries. The federal government also promised full broadband coverage across Sibir within two years, and thousands of kilometers of fiberoptic wires were being placed into the ground. Powerstations were also upgraded where possible and newly constructed where needed, providing plenty of power to the dominion. With the new companies such as Visara and FIAT setting up shop in Sibir, everything was going great. The local government would lobby to open trading relations with among others the mighty neighbor to the west the UER, the Japaneese republic and many other nations.

On the island of Russkiy, a large naval facility was being constructed. This facility only a few kilometers from Vladivostok was to be the new headquarters of the Royal Cottish Navy in the Far East Theatre of Operations. Large administration buildings, barracks, storehouses and docks were being constructed along with a coastal fort against the south. Three massive turrets, each holding three 508mm [20 inch], 62 caliber ETC cannons were being installed to serve as the protection of Vladivostok port. In addition, several surface-to-air batteries were being positioned on Russkiy island along with fixed anti-aircraft artillery. SAM sites were also stationed all over Sibir, creating a wall of SAMs and AAA along the borders and over important military and strategic targets.

Inside Mount Armu in the north of the territory, an important base was stationed. While virtually undetectable, it was to house a massive underground complex spanning tens of kilometers and capable of housing tens of thousands of personell. Massive supercomputers were to be installed, massive mountain halls would have to be drilled out at a minimum of 100 meters below the surface, and it had to be completely NBC proof. The facility was to house one of the five emergency command centers of the Realm, and to be in assosiation with the 946th Strategic Missile Wing which the Cots planned to deploy to near Mount Vysokaya which was only about 90 kilometers to the northeast. 150 ICBMs were to be stationed there, capable of delivering 1,500 nuclear warheads to 1,500 independent targets. A new Air Force Base near the town of Dersu was to be the excuse the Cots had for the increased military activity in the area.

The cities and towns of Adimi, Terney, Plastun, Ol'ga, Nakhodka, Vladivostok and Andreyevka were to be hosts of Cottish naval facilities, enabling the Navy to remain vigilant to the south and east, while army garrisons would be established in all major cities and along the border. However, the Army would be the most concentrated in the west and in the north, while the Air Force would remain vigilant all over the place. The Air Force established bases and fields all over the dominion, taking over and modernizing some twenty pre-existing bases and building some seventeen new. Eventually, the Cots would garrison a lot of personell and equipment in Sibir.

The city of Dalnegorsk in the dominion of Sibir had long been a source of trouble, with gangs running rampant, drug sales on the rise and daily shootings between rival gangs. The local police had proven unable to quell and destroy the war on the streets, and had resigned to the fact that the gangs ruled now. The situation was rapidly growing out of control, with foreign weapons and drugs being imported and openly sold on the streets. However, the region had a new ruler, the Realm of Cotland, who decided to make an example of the city.

The city wasn't very big, having only about 30,000 inhabitants living in an area some 25 square kilometers large. The main problem area was in the area of Zyberia, which housed some 9,000 people and the majority of the residential housing. Here, the rival gangs were based, each membered by adolescents ranging from ten to twenty-five in age. Their armament was mainly small-arms, though some had assault rifles and submachine guns. In all, there were two main gangs and about five minor gangs that roamed the streets, protecting their turf and attacking others. They had no respect for life, and couldn't care less of the civilians living in the area. It was, in short, a reign of terror, fueled by drugs and the power of the gun. Overall, the gangs numbered in total about one thousand youths, fighting internally against each other and society in general. A true pity.

The reign of terror had come this far, but no further, brigader Andersen thought as his units positioned themselves around the city. The 49th Infantry Brigade [motorized] were going to deploy to Dalnegorsk along with the 256th Military Police Battalion and elements of the 6th Special Forces [the Urbanjegers], with orders to stop the civil unrest after recieving an official request for federal support from the local government. In all, his brigade of roughly 4,600 troops would restore order. During the night, trucks loaded with soldiers poured into the city. By 0330, the soldiers had covered all entry points, and effectively sealed the city off. This was part of phase one of the operation, which was codenamed Operation 'Ungdomsjustis'. Seal off all escape points and entry points for illegal drugs. The next phase, which was to commence at 0700 the next morning would be to enter the area of Zyberia in force and root the enemy out. At that time, the brigader would hold a speech on national television, outlining his plan of action.

Brigader Andersen stood in front of a twelve-story building in downtown Dalnegorsk, dressed in his field uniform, kevlar helmet on his head, P33A2 USP in the holster on his right hip and with a tactical vest over his torso, similar to the troops who marched in formation past the flag officer and the journalists in the background. Trucks and M36A1 Nidaros' APCs rolled by, loaded with soldiers dressed in battle garments. A few Black Hawk helicopters flew overhead, and troops were patroling the streets. A few civilians stood outside and watched, surprised and slightly scared by the thousands of men in uniform with weapons. It was barely seven in the morning. At the signal from the cameraman, the General started speaking. The broadcast went to all the major networks, and possibly also some foreign networks.

"God morgen!

God jakt!"

[Good morning! As we speak, soldiers from the Armys fourty-ninth infantry brigade is initiating Operation 'Youth Justice'. This operation has the following goals: stop the crime and terror which has been carried out in Dalnegorsk for the last few months; restore public peace, order and law in the city; whipe out the drug traffic which is flowing through the area; and to restore the public trust in law enforcement and the local authorities. The operation is a direct consequence of a request for assistance from the local authorities to the federal authorities.

The enemy is expected to consist of no more than at most one thousand enemy combatants, armed with light weapons. He knows the area very well, and constitutes a grave threat to the internal security of the Realm. This means that he must be exterminated. During the night, our soldiers have surrounded Dalnegorsk and is in the process of surrounding the city area of Zyberia. Acting under orders issued to me by the federal government and with support from the local authorities, I hereby declare a state of martial law on Dalnegorsk and the surrounding areas. A curfew will be installed between eight PM and seven AM. Any persons discovered by the armed patrols during these hours will be detained. Anyone attempting to evade arrest will be fired upon. The use of deadly force has been authorized. The martial law and curfew will remain in effect until law and order has been restored. I urge the enemy to surrender now, before anyone else are killed. All deals occuring under the duration of Operation 'Youth Justice' will be your responsibility.

In closing, I wish to remind our troops of the Rules of Engagement. If you spot anyone with weapons or if you feel threatened, you are authorized to employ lethal force if necessary. Follow the orders from your officers, remember your training and fight for the Realm! Good hunting!]

Day 1, 0900 L
Damiska St., Zyberia

The first advance into Zyberia took place just past nine o'clock, consisting of two platoons of heavily armed infantry supported by three M36A1 Nidaros armored personell carriers fitted with MG26A1 heavy machine guns with live ammunition loaded. The first patrol would be primarily just to show that the cops were back in town, and to probe the area. A reconnisance mission if you will. Civilians looked in awe as the soldiers of the Royal Cottish Army walked past them, holding their rifles at a 45° angle towards the ground, ready to pull them up and unleash the deadly rounds inside the magazines. One look at the eyes of the soldiers would tell you that if opposed, they would use force. Lethal if necessary.

It wasn't long before the gangs noticed the trespassers. A group of about fifteen boys between the ages of twelve to nineteen walked into the street, blocking the road for the Cots. In their hands were pistols, mainly nine millimeter caliber pistols such as Berettas or Makarovs. The Cottish unit halted immediately, with soldiers taking cover behind the vehicles, building corners or various items on the ground. A few soldiers dropped to one knee and aimed their rifles at the boys while two automatic riflemen went prone and deployed the Harris bipod on their MG49A1 Squad Automatic Weapon, aiming the weapons at the kids. The 200-round ammunition boxes underneath the SAWs were filled with live ammunition. A Cottish kaptein, the leader of the unit walked forward towards the kids. He spoke in English, a language the kids understood according to the intel.

"OK kids, the game is over. Give me your weapons and go home to your parents."

One of the kids, a medium-built boy, about seventeen years old with brown hair and a Beretta 92F in his hand spoke up on behalf of the kids.

"Fuck off. You're in our turf now. How about you putting your weapons down and going home to your parents?"

"You know we won't do that. This is your final warning before we'll take the weapons away and bring you home forcefully. It's your choice. Lower the weapons and go home. Now. I won't tell you again."

Fuck off!"

That was it for the kaptein. He turned and ordered two squads, twenty men, to take the weapons from the kids with force. As the squads moved up, the kids pulled out their weapons and started shooting. A few of the 9mm projectiles slammed into the torsos of the soldiers, knocking the breath out of them but nothing more. The NCS Mk.III armor the Cots wore was certified to stop bullets of calibers of up to 7.62x51mm NATO. A 9mm Parabellum was nothing to worry about. The 6.8x43mm SPC rounds the Cots returned fire with when the kids started shooting, however, was a totally different story. In a few seconds, the fifteen boys had been torn to pieces by the devestating gunfire from the Cots. The medics checked the boys, quickly determining that they were all dead before the soldiers secured the weapons of the enemy. A total of nineteen handguns were collected, ranging in calibers from .38 via .45 to 9mm. A total of 16 enemy rounds had been fired. Later, the Cots would estimate that approximately 500 rounds had been fired from the Cottish weapons against the gangbangers. That meant roughly 33 rounds against each gangbanger. Certainly enough to kill a person.

The news of the shooting spread fast, both to the Cottish command post in downtown and to the members of the various gangs opposing the Cots. For the latter, this meant war! Within the hour, the gangs had entered a loose alliance to stick together and kick the Cots out before they would return to their internal strifes. The first entry had resulted in the Cots drawing first blood. But there would be much more bloodshed before the operation would be concluded. Much more.

Day 1, 1800 L
The first day of the operation had been a success. The Cots had reestablished law and order in the city, save for the major parts of Zyberia. The police were still not able to resume command, so soldiers patrolled the streets, quickly and devestatingly crushing any crimes being committed. While it was efficient, the soldiers and civilians alike knew that the Army was a double-edged broadsword, not a rapier like the police tended to be. If they saw a crime being committed, they responded as they had been ordered with force, quite often excessive. The police however tended to be more lenient and not use quite as much force, hence the analogy. However, in the case of Zyberia, a double-edged broadsword was exactly what was needed.

The whole part of the city had been surrounded by soldiers manning checkpoints, often consisting of one or two MPs, an infantry squad and a M36A1 Nidaros APC or M2008A1 Dingo APV fitted with a heavy machine gun behind sandbags. Everyone going in and out were ID-checked and frisked. On the rooftops, sniper teams had taken up positions to provide cover while helicopters carrying sharpshooters flew over Zyberia, keeping the gangbangers informed that they were living on borrowed time. Tommorrow, they would enter Zyberia in force.

Dingos fitted with loudspeakers drove along the limits of Zyberia, repeating the same message in English: "The Royal Cottish Army urges all civilians to leave Zyberia while there still is time. Tommorrow morning, we will enter in force to root out the remaining terrorists. Please leave the suburb in a calm, orderly fashion through one of the three primary checkpoints. Any unrest will be stopped with the appropriate force. Bring only what you can carry. Anyone carrying weapons, drugs or anything which may lead us to suspect you for gang involvement will result in immediate arrest. Repeat, the Royal Cottish Army urges all civilians to leave Zyberia while there still is time..."

The message had been repeated all day, and many of the civilians inside Zyberia did as urged to. They brought their most precious belongings and lined up at the checkpoints. The three primary checkpoints went along the three main roads leading into the suburb, and were manned by large amount of soldiers and MPs. Camera crews filmed the whole thing, catching the whole thing on tape. There were some unrest, but for the most part, people did as told by the public messages. They were releaved to return to a normal, civilized society. Still, the whole prosess took time since each person was frisked, ID-checked, sniffed by the dogs the MPs had brought along, and the belongings checked. Those suspected for either membership in one of the gangs, drug-involvement or other crimes were detained, zip-tied and brought over to a holding area where they were held until the truck came and drove people away to holding facilities outside the city on an hourly basis. There, the ones in question were questioned mildly by secretive personell from Etterretningstjenesten [Military Intelligence Service] while their identification was checked up against the archives (which the Cots had captured intact in Vladivostok) sent to the interrogation center via encrypted satellite link. The fiberoptic wire network that normally crossed all over the Cottish holdings hadn't been installed yet. Many of the identities checked out and they were found to be the result of overzealous soldiers, resulting in them being released with an appology and an economic compensation of roughly K500 for the troubles they had been subjected to. Most people understood that the Cots were under pressure when they had checked them, and pleased with being cleared. Many actually said thank you when they got the compensation. After that, they were driven back into the city to where they wanted to go by a friendly driver in a Dingo.

Back at the checkpoints, the gangbangers decided to probe the perimeter the Cots had established. Small infrared sensors along the perimeter along with the barbed wire and cement roadblocks the Cots had placed out detected anyone coming close to breaching the perimeter. The sensors were similar to those found lining the perimeter of Cottish military bases and were small, powerful, rough and nearly undetectable, being a cylinder only about 20 centimeters tall and 7 centimeters long with a diameter of roughly 4 centimeters, with a range of 30 meters. The encrypted wireless transmitter transmitted any breach of the IR beam which connected the sensor with the next sensor to the two closest checkpoints, allowing the checkpoint to investigate. Hundreds of them were positioned out, roughly fourty-five centimeters over the ground, thus picking up people, but not cats or other wild animals such as dogs. Between checkpoints #15 and #16, the sensors registered a breach at 1847 local, immediately alerting the two checkpoints. Both got on the radio with the sector command, a M36A3 Nidaros command and control vehicle, and informed them of the situation. Immediately, a squad was dispatched in a Nidaros APC.

Driving quickly through the deserted 250-meter "no mans land", the Nidaros' twelve wheels and silent hybrid engine made little noise. Inside, ten infantrymen equipped with seven AG11A1 rifles, two of them further equipped with G34A2 grenade launchers, two MG49A1 SAWs and one AG4A2 carbine, NVGs and combat gear sat patiently, waiting for the APC to reach the destination. 30 meters from the sensor which reported the breached perimeter, the APC stopped, allowing the infantrymen to open the rear hatch and disembark. Quickly, they got out and spread out, keeping their weapons at the ready as they sweeped the zone, moving in two-man teams, each covering their partner. With the rubber soles of their M-06 boots, the soldiers moved down the alleyway silently, treading lightly. Since it was already dark, they had their NVG-goggles on, seeing everything as clear as if it was day. The goggles had a range of up to 400 meters, allowing them to see quite a distance. The first team stopped with a jolt. Then, one of the soldiers raised his hand, displaying a closed fist. The signal to stop. All the soldiers did and got down on one knee, training their weapons at nothing in particular. The squad leader, a oversersjant gave another hand signal, this one informing them to fan out and move forward slowly. As they came to the exit of the alleyway, the fireteam could see the reason. Six youths holding smallarms standing around a seventh which was entangled in the barbed wire.

The soldiers fanned out as ordered and took up positions in the darkest areas while the squad leader pulled out a heavy Maglite. Checking over his shoulder to find the soldiers in place with weapons trained on the youths, he aimed the Maglite at the youths and turned it on while yelling out, "Freeze! Cottish Army! You're surrounded with no where to go! Lower your weapons or we'll shoot!"

The intruders froze, terrified by the sudden flashlight and deep voice. They exchanged words quietly and quickly, most likely discussing what to do now. The leader of the six was uncertain, but one of his soldiers decided for him by diving for cover behind one of the concrete barricades in the middle of the street while pulling out his pistol. Milliseconds later, the others did as well, save the one entangled in the barbed wire, while the soldiers started opening fire. Soon, bullets were flying all over the place, with 9mm,, .38, .40 and .45 rounds fired by the youths, and 6.8x43mm SPC rounds fired by the Cots. The shoot-out lasted about a minute with two dead youths and one mildly wounded soldier and the rest of the squad arriving before the squad leader called out in Cottish for three of the riflemen toss their G68 flashbang grenades over the barricades while the rest, save the two automatic riflemen bolted over and knocked the surviving youths out with the butts of their rifles. The riflemen did as ordered and pulled the flashbangs out, pulled the safety and tossed them over to the youths while the rest got up and closed their eyes, saving their eyes from seeing nothing but pitch black which the youths did. They also became temporarily deaf by the three 180 decibel "bangs" the three flashbangs created. The second the youths went down, the soldiers got up and bolted over with their rifles ready. One jumped over and landed right next to a kid with his hands in front of his eyes. Acting upon instinct, the soldier smacked the kid in the stomach with the butt of his rifle, causing the kid to fall down on all four. The smack was followed up with a riflebutt into his back, causing the kid to collapse completely. Almost the same thing happened with the other three surviving kids. It ranged from a riflebutt in the head to the use of fists, but the end result was the same. The kids went down on the ground, was searched with any weapons, drugs, smokes, ammunition, money and other belongings being confiscated, and being zip-tied before they were dragged into the street. The poor bastard caught in the barbed wire was knocked out too by the soldiers via a riflebutt before the soldiers got out the wirecutters and cut him out before he too was subjected to the same treatment as the rest. After the area had been secured and the barbed wire-kid getting quick medical treatment, the soldiers dragged the five youths over and into the newly arrived M813A3 5-ton truck which drove them to the interrogation center. They would give the Cots very valuable information on the enemy in the wee hours of the morning.

The next morning, the second phase began in earnest. APCs and APVs armed with heavy machine guns and escorted by large amounts of infantry entered Zyberia, moving to establish a CP deep inside the suburb. An old church was decided to be the best place since it was one of the old designs, made out of stone and built to fullfill a secondary role as a fortress, having only a few entrances and a large tower. On the outside, a relatively large plaza would allow helicopters to land there, bringing in supplies and bringing out prisoners the Cots expected to arrest.

The church

As they progressed inwards, soldiers stopped and entered houses, breaching their way in and sweeping the building. Their target was resistance leaders, identified by the five kids the Cots had taken the previous night. In quite a few cases, the people the Cots classified as terrorists were so amazed that there suddenly was heavily armed soldiers in his or her apartment that they were stunned even before the flashbang detonated that they forgot to fire their weapon. However, many also opened fire, forcing the Cots to return fire. They aimed for the knee and/or shoulder of the enemy, firing single shots. They needed the terrorists alive in order to obtain information and to make an example when the operation was over.

Soldiers from 49th Infantry BDE [motorized] entering a building

The soldiers progressed inwards, taking terrorist leaders as they went along. The terrorists the Cots caught alive were tranqualized, zip-tied and thrown into the relative safety of the passenger compartment of the M36A1 Nidaros APC where s/he would remain until they got to the new CP where one of the helicopters which flew overhead would land and pick them up. The UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters overhead also provided cover with the M134A2 Miniguns they had in the doorways and early warning thanks to the sensors and communications with the ground forces. They could also transmit data from the FLIR-sensors to the command vehicle on the ground so the ground commander could see if there were any enemies ahead and if so, deal with them. Datalink was a beautiful thing.
