The reigning Archduke Sirius Van Garret II sat upon his throne looking at his court. The Barons Counts and other associated nobles had come once again as they did every year to renew their oaths of loyalty to the Archduke. The elven slaves were waiting upon every human present as always. The first Earl and the most powerful Reginold Al'gould bowed and came to up to his sovereign liege lord and recited the ancient oath of loyalty used by every nobleman when every he tried to pay homage to a more powerful noble. The Archduke looked bored with the formalities but protocol was still protocol. The Archduke replied with the customary response of acceptance of service and took a cup of wine from one of the slaves and drank it.


The Archduke after several minutes felt extremely dizzy and light headed. His heart was going a mile a minute. The Archduke tried to stand up but only got four steps away from his throne before collapsing on the floor. The Barons, Counts and Earls all gasped in surprise and several elven slaves immediately came to get the Archduke's body away from any possible assassin that could be amongst the crowd. The Krechinheim Templar Guards quickly begin to surround the entrances and exits making sure no one can get in and out of this part of the castle. Agents of the Black Network looking for signs of poisoning took the Wine cup and sent it to one of their many hidden strongholds throughout Istaria for immediate testing. The Archduke's court looked surprised by the whole ordeal and many of them seemed in utter shock and denial. The Archduke had run the Grand Duchy for thirty-five years and under him the continent was united under his iron-fisted rule.

The fact now stood that the Archduke Sirius Van Garret II was no longer able to rule. The hospital had announced his death roughly three hours after the incident. They announced the cause was pulmonary failure. The peasants and clergy were in utter shock. The Archduke was considered to be a man of Iron, a hero one that had kept foreigners and heathens off of Istaria by destroying any foreign vessel that came to close to Istaria's seawaters.

The Archon of the Holy Church Marcus III called for a day of mourning and remembrance of the great protector of the church and of the people in the Grand Duchy of Krechinheim. The Archon also gave a speech to the people one that would be on every television and radio in the entire Grand Duchy.

"People of the Grand Duchy of Krechinheim. The time has come to mourn the passing of our sovereign liege lord who ruled with the divine right of god and was kind and benevolent ruler. We must be strong and be glad to know he shall receive the ultimate reward in the afterlife for his kind and generous reign. I would like to announce that his successor would be a great and powerful Archduke like himself however as you all know. His successor is his only child and daughter Grand Duchess Irene Van Garret may she reign well and protect our people and our faith with the same zeal that her father did."

The Crowd cheered but there was uncertainty amongst there cheering. This was the first time that a woman would rule the Grand Duchy in approximately 300 years. The Van Garret line had held power and had kept the nation isolated from foreigners this long to protect the culture and way of life of the Grand Duchy of Krechinheim and many hoped to continue with the practice…


The Grand Duchess Irene Van Garret roughly 19 years old at the time of her fathers passing. The Grand Duchess had been in her private fortress in Isengrad. She finally received word from one of the slaves that her father had fallen to sudden heart failure that had killed him. Grand Duchess Irene Van Garret upon receiving the news started to cry on the spot as several Krechinheim Templar Guards were added to here Retinue to protect her on the way to the Castle of Krechinheim.

The Archduke's private stretched limousine pulled up to the parking lot and the Grand Duchess entered the limo after several seconds' hesitation. The Chauffeur had held the door for the Grand Duchess and her retinue then ran back to his spot at the driver's seat and headed towards the capital. The Black Network arranged to have several Black Vans with several heavily armed agents surround the limo. The Local County Guard was also around flashing their sirens to keep normal traffic under control while this procession headed towards the capital…

After several hours of driving, The Grand Duchess reached her first stop the Arch Temple of Krechinheim. The Grand Duchess Irene Van Garret had to follow tradition to the letter. She had to go before Archon Marcus III and receive his divine blessing before ascended to the throne of Arch Duchess, as tradition demanded from every single Archduke or Arch Duchess since the time of the creation of the church and the Grand Duchy…

The Archon was already waiting for them with his entourage of reporters, Bishops, and Krechinheim Templar Guards. The Grand Duchess Irene Van Garret curtsied and said her well-rehearsed line, "Your Divine highness, Archon of all of Istaria. I would like to receive your blessing for my coronation to the throne of Krechinheim."

Archon Marcus III looked upon the young woman who requested her birthright. The Archon knew this moment was critically that if he denied her the throne of Arch Duchess the Grand Duchy would have an internal war between the vast nobility to become the new Archduke. Archon Marcus III was unsure about the Grand Duchess's qualifications of ruling but he had to hope she could keep the nobles in line like her father before her. The Archon took a quick breath and replied, "Grand Duchess Irene Van Garret you have my divine blessing to ascend to your fathers position. I pray you will be a benevolent duchess instead of an Ironfisted tyrant meant to punish the people for their sins."

The Grand Duchess smiled and almost breathed a sigh of relief this was a highly crucial part of the ceremony and she passed. She quickly regained her composure and replied, "Thank you your divine holiness long may the people be under your benevolent guidance."

The Archon bowed and was escorted to the limo to head to the Archduke's castle to finish the sacred ritual of ascension.

The Court was called in session with all the various nobles, clergy, pages, and slaves whispering in hush voices on what was going on…

The Grand Duchess Irene Van Garret sat upon the throne and the Archon was in the middle of the crowd holding the crown of the Arch Duchess. The Archon Marcus III began to speak to the crowd, "Nobles, clergy, pages, and slaves you are called to witness this noble occasion in which a new Arch Duchess is placed upon the throne of our Grand Duchy. Long may she reign!"

The Court replied, "Long May She reign!"

The Archon then moved to the throne room and said the finally line, "Grand Duchess Irene Van Garret do you swear to defend the faith, the Grand Duchy and Istaria with all your being and strength?"

The Grand Duchess replied, "I do with all my strength and being."

The Archon Marcus III exclaimed, "Then by the divine authority bestowed upon me by god himself. I hereby place the crown of the Arch Duchess upon your head and proclaim from henceforth to the day of death you our Arch Duchess Irene Van Garret Sovereign liege lady of the Grand Duchy of Krechinheim."

The Archon then placed the crown upon her head and the Court immediately applauded…

The newly crowned Arch Duchess Irene Van Garret I finally address her subjects, "My vassals, servants, and slaves. Today I hereby announce that the isolationist policy we have maintained for 300 years is at an end. The Grand Duchy of Krechinheim needs to begin trading with the outside world in order to modernize and keep our independence."

The nobles were speechless no Archduke would have dared tried to announce such a controversial policy. The Earl Stefan Monnet one of the lesser Earls replies, "Yes my lady, We shall announce this policy as soon as possible." The Court then departed from the throne room leaving the Arch Duchess to her thoughts….

In his private quarters, The Earl Reginold Al'gould cursed his situation in front of his son Michael Al'gould. "May God damn her, She is not following my plans. She is trying to establish diplomatic relations with other nations!"

Michael Al'gould replies, "Father, How does this effect your great plan?"

Reginold Al'gould replies, "I did not have the Archduke killed for nothing. I hoped she would keep the isolation policy to protect her sovereignty like the Archdukes before her. The Arch Duchess Irene Van Garret however has started to look outside of our Grand Duchy thus meaning we could have foreign competition when we try to tie her with a political marriage."

Michael Al'gould replies, "Yes father, your plans our not going as expected however she has yet to choose a husband thus we have time to keep up your brilliant plans."…..

I applaud your decision to come out of isolation. I assure you, having friends is definately preferable to standing alone. Especially when an invasion or a coup threatens to overthrow the existing balance of power.

It's not always easy dealing with other nations. Early in my reign, Wilhelmsborough got into a row with the militant nation of West Corinthia after they, shot down some patrol aircraft mistaking it as a threat. Thankfully, some careful tact and diplomacy prevented the situation from escalating any further, especially when a surviving pilot shot and killed one of their commanding officers.

Our two countries are now friends and allies. And now, Your Highness, the Principality would also like to be friends with the nation of Krechinheim.

As you have accepted our deal for 12 Harriers a month for one year, and the payment plan that follows, we will commence with delivering the first twelve immediately. They will be brought into your country on board a Trojan II Class Rigid Airborne Aircraft Carrier, which if you haven't seen before, is actually quite large. Here is a picture so Your Highness will know what to expect.

As for small arms, the Principality has just recently purchased two million Baretta Model 92 Pistols. Our production facilities are currently working to reverse-engineer these weapons. Once production begins, we would be willing to sell you 5,000 Baretta Model 92s to you for $250,000 (that's $50 per unit).

As for armered vehicles, we can sell you 20 M1 Abrams Tanks for a total of $10,000,000 (that's $500,000 per unit).

Firstly I request that you send greetings from my lord the Fell to the honoured Archduchess, and congratulations on her ascent to the position of Archduchess. Although I confess I have never made contact with your nation before, the late Archduke's reputation as a strong ruler, if one not predisposed to foreign diplomacy, reached as far as Helfaer. His presence will be sorely missed.

However, now is not the time for idle remembrance. As your nation has requested diplomatic and trade links with other nations, I would be happy to oblige. If possible, I would like to open diplomatic channels, either by having an embassy constructed in your nation or by sending an ambassador to the Ducal Court. Either option would be welcome to us, and in the event of either we would be happy to host a Krechinheim embassy in our capital city.

Although I confess I have never made contact with your nation before, the late Archduke's reputation as a strong ruler, if one not predisposed to foreign diplomacy, reached as far as Helfaer. His presence will be sorely missed.

However, now is not the time for idle remembrance. As your nation has requested diplomatic and trade links with other nations, I would be happy to oblige. A while ago, you suggested that our two nations form a close military allience which would be based on mutual defense. That suggestion was forgotten in the rush to arm Krechinheim with modern weapons and aircraft.

Now I would like to revisit your suggestion. Relations between our two countries have been good since we decided to exchange embassies. Now Your Majesty, I would like to strengthen these bonds.

To that end, I would like to propose the construction of a military base on Krechinheim soil. The base would house both Army and Air Force personel. A Brigade of 4,800 troops would defend the base, while 4 Squadrons (48 aircraft) of fighter aircraft patrol the skies. There would also be a miscellanious number of Chinook helicopters, C-17 Globemasters, M1 Abrams tanks, supply trucks, and Stratotankers.

Of course, this is all negotiable, Your Highness. There is still your imput in the matter. It is, after all, your country.

I would implore you, Arch Duchess, to consider my suggestion. Feel free to make suggestions and changes, of course. Please respond soon.
