Official Announcement of the United States Government
As it has been known for quite some time now, the United States of Allanea has often participated in pacification, civil rights protection, and counter-terrorism operations around the globe. Often we have arrived at locations where the system of public transportation was disrupted by war – or for other reasons the car culture had needed promoting.
As such, the United States of Allanea will now seek developers to aid it in the development of the DAA-1 – the Disaster Area Automobile, Mark One. We will purchase the patent for the DAA-1, and transfer it into the public domain, so that any company can make as many of them as they can.
The following are the production requirements for the DAA-1:
1. Must be able to start reliably.
2. Must be able to run on alternative fuels such as ethanol.
3. Must be four-wheel-drive, as many less-developed states do not possess adequate roads.
4. Must be easy for maintenance/modification.
5. The standard version of the DAA-1 should have a roof, for the safety of the passengers.
6. Capable of top speed of at least 100 kilometers per hour.
7. Given compliance with the DAA-1 standards, cheapest vehicle wins.
The winner of the competition will be given twenty-five million Universal Standard Dollars, courageously donated by the Automobile Association of Allanea, the Automotive Workers Union of Allaea, and the state governments of Merkaz, Severo-Zapad, and Kalandia.
We would note that there is no need to create an ‘environmentally-friendly’ or a ‘fuel-efficient’ vehicle. While it’s nice, the cheaper vehicle will win the competition over the less fuel-efficient one.
The following will not be accepted for this competition:
1. Electric, hybrid, and battery powered vehicles, both because of difficulties of maintenance and the fact that electric power is not guaranteed in Less Developed States. In fact, no vehicles other then internal-combustion or gas-turbine vehicles will be accepted.
2. ‘Urban smartcars’ will not be accepted.
Once the DAA-1 is selected, we will accept bids to manufacture 10,000 DAA-1’s to be stored in Allanea in order to distribute them in LDS or disaster zones.
Sincerely yours,
J. K. Arvin, United States Secretary of State
