There are four main islands in the archipelago: Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Hokkaido. To the south are the Ryukyu Islands. The north are the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin Island. The largest island - Honshu - is the primary center of Japanese culture and government. The capital - Kyoto - is situated in the Kinki plain on the western end of the island. On the eastern end of Honshu is the Kanto plain, where the city of Edo is situated [the capital of the Tokugawa Bakufu].
Area:
* Total: 377,835 kmĀ²
Climate: temperate with distinct four seasons, although climate varies from cool temperate in the north [Hokkaido] to subtropical in the south [Ryukyu].
History
The Empire of Japan has existed for a long time, dating to the 8th Century CE. Even so, the state of Japan has not always been unified around the crown, notable in the numerous civil wars that plagued Japan until 1603. During that time, Japan expanded its cultural interests to China, borrowing ideas and technology from them. The first contacts date to the 16th Century, cumulating in Japan's isolation in 1642 to the world [except through a Dutch port near Nagasaki]. In 1592, Japan attempted to invade China, but was unsuccessful. In 1600, Tokugawa Ieyasu established the Tokugawa Bakufu, the current form of government in Japan. In 1846, the Emperor Osahito assumed the throne, as the rightful descendant of Amaterasu. In his wisdom, he has appointed Tokugawa Iemochi as Shogun of Japan.
