The calm before the storm – The chamber of the XPDP’s Caucus
will soon bare witness to a fierce contest for the future leadership of the Party

Holy Xirnium’s Head of Government and Chief Minister, Lord Ertham Nidor, has announced that he will stand down from his position next month, citing health reasons.

Lord Nidor, 94, who has served as the national leader of the Xirniumite Progressive Democracy Party for almost two decades, said that he would retire to the backbench of the High Ecclesiarchy. The Grand Cardinal indicated that he would not contest next year’s parliamentary elections as a candidate for his long-held seat of Narn.

The Chief Minister said in a brief statement today that his advanced age meant he was suffering from an increasingly debilitating health condition. Lord Nidor indicated that he had consulted with his physicians and that, after long and careful discussions with his family, friends and colleagues, he had taken the personal decision to resign from politics.

‘I have decided to call a ballot for the leadership of the parliamentary Progressive Democracy Party at the next Caucus meeting,’ explained the Chief Minister. ‘I am content with my decision to step down from the Premiership of the Eternal Republic and I wish my successor well in continuing to advance the XPDP’s liberal, secular and social democratic vision for a better and fairer Xirnium.’

Grand Cardinal Ertham Nidor said that it had been, ‘both a privilege and an honour to humbly serve the Xirniumite people.’

This morning in the nation of Torontia (where a Constitutional Convention is presently being held) the current Foreign Minister, Lady Heather Gilda, confirmed that she would, as expected, be standing for election during the next meeting of Caucus. Others who have made clear their intention to contest the Party’s leadership include the Defence Minister, Lord Ameas Vernius, and possibly the Interior Minister, Lord Baldor Wallach.

The individual who succeeds in rising to the ascendancy of the XPDP will face a difficult task, and will need to galvanise the Party for parliamentary elections to be held in just over one year’s time. Of particular importance will be addressing criticism aimed at the inflation and interest rate levels under the Progressive Democracy Government.

And who will become the next Chief Minister of the Eternal Republic?

‘The individual best suited to serve the interests of the Party and of the Xirniumite people whom we are elected to represent,’ was the cryptically curt response of one High Ecclesiarchy backbencher.
