Colonel James Carter gazed off the deck of the Maddox class battleship, white knuckles squeezed tight on the rail. Before him was the project that could make or break him, and he didn’t like gambling with these kinds of odds. His eyes were directed out to the sea, opposite from the Borman colony. Shooban slaves worked under the crack of the Imperial whip to bring Carter’s dream to life. Rising out of the sea was an artificial island guarding Port Coke and the entrance to Rect River. Theoretically, upon completion the island would be loaded with defensive artillery, a small airbase, a small garrison, and protected by a naval dock. This new island, named after the colonel, would be a critical piece in the defense of Rect River, vital to the trade and survival of the Borman colony. Work had been going for several months, and was supposed to be finished in about six months. Imperial engineers had laid the foundations, the most important part, and now slaves were being used to finish the grunt work. Ships came back and forth from the site and the small Borman coast line, carrying supplies for the construction.
