Union Canada outlaws all Capitalist businesses

Union Canada
14-02-2006, 15:15
The nation of Union Canada has shut down and made illegal capitalism.

It comes after the capitalist forces were blamed in part for a bombing on this socialist country that resulted in 5 deaths even though it is a belief that was only an excuse.

So far most executives and business people have left freely but several dozen and have been arrested, and one person has been reportedly injured in the crackdown

Union Canada Foreign Ministry:

To all foreign nations. We finally decided to crack down on business because they wanted to corrupt our peace-loving 23 million people and we believe capitalist forces were involved in the terrorist attack on our country that resulted in 5 deaths. No one has been killed, and we do not expect a confrontation with the outside world, but are prepared if you want one. This is internal Union Canada business.

Although we shall not intervene with your political processes for now, know that Helfaer condemns this foolish policy. Competition and the struggle to improve oneself is the lifeblood of civilisation, and attempting to remove that right is barbaric and eventually self-destructive. From this day forward, no trade or transport will take place between Helfaer and Union Canada.

Union Canada "Outlaws Capitalism"

In a startling display of silliness, Union Canada "outlawed Capitalism," apparently. The ill-defined political concept was declared officially prohibited yesterday with the Union Canadian government blaming non-specific "Capitalists" for a series of bombings and reacting by making illegal anything allowed under liberal economics and anyone in any way associated with those things.

A spokesman for the Confederation of Praetonian Industry (CPI) commented on the event saying, 'Im not really sure what the difference is between a "capitalist business" and a "non-capitalist business", but Im sure there must be one if the Union Canadian government says so.' The spokesman continued by adding that this move would almost certainly destroy any last vestiges of the Union Canadian economy.

A spokesman for a prominent civil rights group based in Praeton said that this move was 'A digusting attack on the fundamental liberties of the people of Union Canada,' and demanded that any refugees from the Union Canadian silliness be admitted to Praetonia, a move which the government has pledged to make. The spokesman continued by saying that 'If anyone spots Capitalism attempting to enter the country, be sure to offer it asylum.'

'Poor thing,' she continued.

The Union Canadian government has resoundingly destroyed all capitalist owned businesses in Union Canada and they will go into public hands. With this, the transfer to socialism is complete and people complain that the economy will collapse, however, Union Canada believes the economy will do fine.

To other nations:

If you pull trade with Union Canada, we are sorry if you do, however since a terrorist attack claimed the lives of five people we have been forced to act.

An attractive young woman sat next to a man as the set returned for the ANN. The cameraman gave her a thumbs-up, and she began to talk.

"And in international news today, the government in Union-Canada has reacted extremely to a minor insider attack resulting in the deaths of five. Reporter Kris Vayger has the report."

The camera panned to a man standing in a bright cityscape.

"Thank you, Annika, I'm standing on the streets of Union-Canada to give you the latest. In response to an attack supposedly by capitalist sympathisers, the government of Union-Canada has overreacted and banned all capitalist business practices in their nation. Many business owners have already fled after the news was announced. Civilian reports here have been mixed, more favoring the action of the government. Internation feeling have been significantly more negative towards the decision, as it is felt this will consume the economy of Union-Canada slowly overtime without the competition of a free-market system. I'm Kris Vayger, in Union-Canada, ANN."

The camera focus returned to the studio.

"Thanks Kris...and next we'll go over the shocking story of how a man came back from a thirty-nine year coma after the break."

"...Recent decisions taken by the government of Union Canada have made us change our advise on this nation. All Tadjik nationals who reside in it should leave and all those who plan to go there should consider whether they really have to go..."
"... as to the question why we give a negative advise; next to the death of five in a bombing, there are the repressive laws forbidding capitalism. Our own Main Intelligence Directorate told us this nation is currently worse than the former Soviet Union, with its crazy and dangerously fast evolution into communism."
"Some agents said they were not convinced that this was the work of capitalists, they point in the direction of communist element, accelerating the revolution through violence. I would never send any of my representatives to such an extreme nation..."

International political commentator Ptolemius Fowl was discussing the recent news from Union Canada...

"In a starteling decision, the regretably foolish nation of Union Canada has outlawed 'all capitalist businesses' from its border since some terrorists saying they were 'capitalists' killed a handful of people. So, you may ask, exactly what is a capitalist business?

The answer: Pretty much every business there is.

The next question may be: how can the economy of Union Canada ever hope to survive from such a massive change in policy?

Ah! Glad you asked. Lord William Plutus, High Minister for Finance, has expressed that he believes that the economy of Union Canada faces inevitable collapse and that there will be massive inflation. As such, he expresses to the international community that accepting any currency whatsoever from Union Canada should stop, unless it is in specie. He also predicts that for the time being there will be great unemployment--what with the loss of all businesses and whatnot-- followed by virtual serf labor in the future.

Count Magnus Scorpius, Minister of Business and Industry, has expressed his sincere sorrow for the people of Union Canada. Now they will never be given a chance to live up to their potential, and nearly all of them shall have to live in poverty. He also feels sorry for 'all the businessmen, many of which were probably very innocent of doing anything but their jobs, who have now had their livlihoods and work's life stolen from them by a corrupt and vile goverment.'

What!? An Imperial official calling a foreign power corrupt and vile!? Get out! But wait--there's more! The Emperor's Press Secretary released the following statement from the Office of the Emperor:

The Grand Imperium of Risban laments the stupid actions of the government of Union Canada. The actions of the government were rash, ignorant, and did not take into account the lives, hopes, dreams, and jobs of the people. Due to this, the Grand Imperium of Risban officially places a trade embargo on the ignorant nation of Union Canada until their realize the error of their ways. The Imperial Parliament, with the pestering of some lobbyists, has agreed to open its doors to all the people of Union Canada who have had their lives destroyed by these stupid actions.

-Julia Ormiv, Press Secretary of the Emperor

Well, looks like the businesses of Risban may be picking up some excellent workers, managers, and financers soon!

All in all, we've really gotta feel sorry for the people in Union Canada.

And now back to Martin in the studio, who has some late-breaking news about how a cow fell off of a cliffside and killed a man....

A radio brodcast in Krendakov:

“Today, capitalists in Union Canada have killed five innocent civilians. In response to this, Union Canada has outlawed capitalism in what can only be described as a heroic action. Many businessmen and –women have left the country, although several dozen have been arrested. One man has been injured in this crackdown on capitalist oppression, but this is little price to pay for freedom. Several nations have currently condemned the mass nationalisation of industry in Union Canada, and are refusing to trade with them. Our government has promised economic and military aid to the government of Union Canada. They have also let it be known that no aggressive moves against Union Canada will be tolerated be Krendakov, and any counter-revolutionary actions of a military nature by any state towards Union Canada will be countered in kind.”

Freedom and a society where people do not need to fear homelessness or hunger, this is the society that should be persued. We have observed that the outlawing of Capitalism will have severe socio-economic repercussions, including the ability to finance an acceptable social safetynet for those who are less fortunate. We second the Velkyan Statement. You have enacted an irrational policy that ensures total economic and political suicide for your nation at large without considering the consequences of such a move, and you have not anticipated the future expense (even without foreign intervention) of such an endeavour, which is unresponsive to the true needs and desires of the consumer. As it is, we will not intervene directly, as this is your failing alone-we leave you to suffer the consequences.

Chancellor Donner's private residence, Brettonian highlands

A heavy snow had fallen over the past twelve hours, prompting Chancellor Gerhard Donner to take a brief sabbatical to his private residence in the mountains. Donner made a minute adjustment to his Winchester 1300's sights.

"Hmm... what is the latest report from our men in the Chechen Republic?" he asked, not taking his eyes off the sights. The Chancellor's aide-de-camp behind him pursed through his PDA.

"According to Colonel Krotkov, the expeditionary force commander, they've removed the foreign assets and have more or less locked down the major cities," the aide reported. Donner's knee-length fur coat flapped as a particularly strong breeze swept over them.

"More or less?" Donner asked. He scowled at a small stain developing on the fingers of his white leather gloves from oil in the shotgun's reciever.

"There's still some residual fighting occurring," the aide stated. "They shot down a tilt-rotor that was to be moving President Shanz to a... more secure location."

"The poor souls. I trust Shanz wasn't in it at the time?" the Chancellor cocked one of his thin eyebrows.

"No, sir," said the aide. "Thankfully, he was still on the ground at the time." Donner nodded.

"I say, it's certainly gotten cold all of a sudden..." Donner mentioned, buttoning the collar of his coat shut and wrapping his silk scarf a little tighter around his face and neck.

"You're telling me, sir," the aide responded, rolling up his own greatcoat's collar and pulling down the flaps of his wool field cap. "My hands are getting cold even with the gloves..."

"Such is the Fatherland's climate, it seems..." Donner said, loading a single cartridge into the magazine. The aide took a hint and opened the door on the small wooden case he was carrying. A pigeon took flight and immediately headed in a westernly direction, towards the distant smokestacks of the Brettonian capital peaking over the horizon. Donner shouldered his shotgun, held his aim for a moment, then fired. The pigeon dropped to the ground in a spray of feathers. Donner ejected the spent cartridge and lowered the shotgun. "Well, now, how was that?"

"Ahhh... a little to the left, I think. The wind wasn't being very favorable," the aide reported, taking the shotgun as Donner handed it to him.

"Hmm, yes, I suppose," Donner stated. "Well, let's get back inside. It looks like the snow is going to resume again." The aide nodded; the two men headed towards the truck they had came out in. His PDA started beeping again.

"Huh? What's this," he said, slinging the shotgun over his shoulder and flipping the device open again. Donner paused.

"Chancellor, you might get a laugh out of this..." the aide began. "It appears the Union Canadians have banned capitalism."

"Banned capitalism?" the Chancellor smirked. "What an enchanted world we live in..."

"They wouldn't be the first. Stupid kibbutzniks," the aide spat.

"Say, isn't that where the Intelligence Ministry is thinking they've taken General Palovich?" Donner stated, stroking his chin.

"I believe so, Chancellor," the aide remarked.

"I see... well, perhaps we'll be paying them a visit in the near future, too."

So far, it had been reported that several dozen capitalist business men and women had fled the country. However, most Canadian citizens did not mind that all of their industries had become public. They did not have to pay any fees for health care anymore, and prices for food had dropped 15% since the move several days before. Every thing seemed well even though economists, government backed, claimed that the economy was weak and was headed towards imploded.

In a brief press conference prior to a meeting with several international diplomats, Second Minister Elias Grodin, Shasoria's most outspoken, and sometimes flagrant, personality, spared a few questions regarding his stance on the Union Canada decision.

"I think they believe money grows on trees. Public industry never projects the efficiency of private. Economies based solely around public industry tend to crumble unless they too take on capitalist stances in running them. They'll either destroy their economy, or destroy whatever values they wanted to project by privatizing industry. The smart thing to have done would have been to put more government spending on anti-terrorism efforts."

"You know... With everything going public--and healthcare and education instantly becoming free along with cheaper food-- their government will have almost no money at all to run a military, any defenses, or any other public improvements," said Lord William Plutus, Minister for Finance. "The government of Union Canada will be, essentially, bankrupt, particularly due to massive inflation that will be happening."

"Oh, but according to their reports, everything is working out just fine," scoffed the Business Minister with intense sarcasm, rolling his eyes. "I mean, it's just so easy going from capitalist to communist overnight, publicizing everything and putting millions out of work."

Plutus smirked. "Ah, of course, propaganda--they need to get the international community off of their backs for pretty much ruining the lives of their people," said the Finance Minister.

"This is the perfect time to attack," announced Grand General Charles Skops, standing. "The international community is mocking and condemning this pathetic little nation. As Lord Plutus has told us, they will lack funds for defense... They're weak and pathetic. We should take this opportunity to destroy them!"

The Minister of Industry, Lord Richard Gaius Zorag, nodded in agreement. "Yes... We can liberate their oppressed peoples," said Zorag. "Their government is obviously unfit to rule."

"We would be able to take out their government, implement freedom again, and let them elect new government officials," agreed Count Pelias of the Imperial Parliament.

"Yes, and have every powerful communist nation in the world breathing down our necks," glared Alexander Perkins, the Foreign Secretary. "It could be disastrous."

"They took away everything their people had and are playing it off as a charade," yelled the Grand General. "Oh, we'll give them free healthcare and cheaper food--until when? Their is no way that their economy can instantly make the change. Their currency is already dropping in value against other international currencies and they will have to go bankrupt as well! We must strike!"

"Bloody war-hungry mongrel," yelled Perkins. "You're always wanting to invade any bloody country that is weak enough for us to do so to."

"ENOUGH," shouted the Emperor. All turned to look at him. "We will moniter the situation. If another power declares war, we will make a decision then."

"Aye, sir," came the mumbled responses.

Someplace in Beda Fromm...

The oak table was a mess from the portfolios amassed in front of the different men seated around it. They all wore expensive suits made of fine cloths and even linen, with their black or brown dress shoes and a unique tie. They were the epitome of business men, which were very, very numerous in the Empire, especially since the introduction of[ absolute capitalism (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Absolute_Capitalism). Most of their eyes lunged forth upon the man seated at the head of the table, as he expressed his opinion, "This is simply ludicrous! How can they simply stop capitalism in its tracks and expel all capitalist? Are they insane?"

He had much reason for concern. To commit a country to an economic change was hard, but to do so suddenly was suicide, and it would truly show in the economic reports of this economic trimester in Union Canada. The same thing had taken place in Space Union, where it was just beginning to emerge from what seemed the very end of their economy, and now it would be tenfold worse in Union Canada. Any economist would find this fact more than obvious. The discussion at the table reflected this as the man continued, "So they tried to blow up a building to get rid of some competition...so what? It is capitalism, competition drives them. It's the fault of the state that can't control its businesses."

Another man spoke up, and as he emerged from behind the crowd of faces all could see it was the legendary Dietrich Harbinber, who some thought as the most powerful man in the world. He was none other than owner of Kriegzimmer, and as only a few select inviduals knew, clandestine leader of the Knights of Pir-Sar, a large group of economic terrorist that would stop at nothing to spread absolute capitalism in countries they thought worth it to do so. He spoke softly, "Do you suggest an operation?"

Nobody spoke except the man at the head of the table, "Perhaps."

Harbinger brought his chair in closer, "We can do it. Despite us putting around fifty agents in Haven, we have a lot more at our disposal, and this would be an easy operation. These guys don't have a clue on how to fight organized crime that has the power of an entire armaments industry behind it. They would be outmatched and they would turn into yet another absolute capitalist nation. Imagine the profit for us."

The other man nodded and responded, "Obviously, but I wanted to know what you thought about something more drastic."

Harbinger frowned, "Like what?"

"A regime change. Putting a bussiness man from the Empire as defacto military ruler of the country, even if its under the veil of a false democracy." The man failed to flinch as he said the unexpected.

Harbinger's face was hard as a rock, as always, showing no emotion and he retorted, "Would be risky."

"Yes, can you do it?"

Harbinger smiled and then let out a chuckle, "What can I not do?"

"Good."

That said, a few phone calls that day put around twenty men in Macabea waiting for a flight out to the Imperial colony south of Skibereen, which would have the plane refuel and then take them to Union Canada. From there they would receive orders much like IINSA agents did, through encrypted satellite bursts to their laptops they carried with them. But of course, these would just be twenty agents of many, sent in the early days of operation to form a presence. Soon, Union Canada would fall into chaos, already formed through their insane economic policies, although the Knights would do nothing too drastic. It would all be a progressive change, and it would be the Knight's first real operation. They carried nothing with them, it would be there when they got there.

HESS Dinorah...
The sleek, silent submarine pushed through the waters south of Union Canada with ease, moving at the slow rate of three knots. They would have just enough on board supplies to make it to and then back, but just in case they would take on limited supplies when they reached their destination, the coastline of Union Canada. The Cartagena class nuclear submarine was only outfitted with eight torpedoes, all of them already in the tubes as snap shots. The rest of the space was for food and for boxes upon boxes of armaments, destined for the twenty operatives that would soon be based in the country - and, of course, for future Knights in the area. Indeed, the submarine was not on a mission for war, it was destined to do something few submarines did nowadays, insert men and supplies, and leave. It would do no direct harm to Canadian assets, and if all went well, it would make it to around six kilometers of the coast, and then leave. Even if the Canadians caught the submarine, would they really engage it? Or did they not fear a war so close to their homes? In the end, no one believed the Dinorah was in any danger, and Commandaet Alex Karol thought this most of all.

Karol would be commander of the operation, leading four other men onto the shores of Union Canada and then making a short trek to the shortest small city and purchasing vehicles to hook up with the team coming by aircraft at the country's capital. Karol took inspiration from the insertion of Mark Clark into North Africa in 1942, and this submarine mission was styled much after it... now one had to wait and see to tell if it would be as successful...
