Special Report

"Stalin...Mao...Hitler...these are just three of history's many genocidal, megalomaniacal autocrats with hands stained red by the blood of millions. They are evil incarnate. Unfortunately...their legacies live on in certain nations in the modern world, nations infamous for their wanton brutality, totalitarianism, total absence of liberty, and the sadistic relish with which they suppress, oppress, and repress their citizens, subjecting them to barbaric torture and terror so extreme as to defy credulity. Today, we will provide a look at some of these regimes. Be warned: This is not for the faint of heart. If you have young children, we strongly recommend you do not let them see this disturbing feature. Viewer discretion is advised..."

The screen slowly faded, and then, appeared a faded image of a vast, dusty field populated by thousands of skeletal corpses of people who had succumbed to famine. Crops were virtually withering to dust. Children with wide, vacant, glazed eyes and bloated abdomens screeched ferally beside their dead parents. Extremely thin, malnourished human beings, so deathly frail they did not walk so much as wobble, staggered along, so thin that every bone was visible, so brittle and weak that even a mere stumble would fracture a limb.

The narrator's somber, ominous voice intoned: We see here the killing fields of Beth Gellert, a nation that would have garnered the admiration of Stalin. Millions of people, even children - innocent, beautiful children - are worked as virtual slaves, for over 15 hours a day, and provided only a single meal, consisting of 4 ounces of a bland porridge which has no nutriotional value, abominable taste, and is prepared in almost barbarously unhygienic fashion. Consumption of this porridge can cause cataclysmic, even fatal, gastrointestinal illness. 3 in 5 children die before reaching the age of 5. Children as young as 4 are kidnapped, taken to concentration camps, and indoctrinated in Stalinist dogma. While millions starve or die of exhaustion, the elite reside in extravagant mansions, feeding their dogs from a golden tray and spending their afternoons swimming in Olympic-sized swimming pools filled with gold.

The screen showed a man, his face a mere blur, doing laps in a swimming pool filled to the capacity with gold coins, while shackled, whipped, starving slaves looked on.

Torture is also endemic. Even the mildest criticism of the regime can result in death. No one is immune.

Images of mutilated, massacred bodies, many of them small children, filled the screen. A haunting musical score was just slightly audible in the background. A brutish, mustachioed, greasy-faced man was shown bludgeoning a woman with a sledgehammer. Hoarse screams and moans of agony competed with the background music for ascendancy. Together, they were truly chilling. Even the most steel-spined man would shudder hearing it.

Similar conditions exist in other nations: The Lone Alliance, Czardas, Ankhmet. Nations that preside callously over the demise of millions. Their atrocities are a stain on the conscience of the world. Millions of the dead cry out for justice. Will freedom ever liberate them from the shackle of tyranny, the yoke of injustice? Only time will tell. For now, let us pray for these anguished, miserable, suffering souls.

The screen slowly faded, and the credits appeared.

Official Statement from the Foreign Ministry

We hereby give total condemnation to the nation of Beth Gellert, controlling people in a totalitarian fashion, denying the right to property and social advancement of individuals and the evil way they work against human rights and morality all indicate Beth Gellert is a disgusting nation unworthy of International relations or recognition as a nation.

We hope that one day your people might be freed from Communist Tyrrany.

"Like my Parthian brethren, I, too, sincerely hope one day the enslaved masses of Beth Gellert may one day taste freedom. The arch-Marxist tyranny keeping them in bondage must be toppled."

Such barbarism deserves nothing but a swift end. I side with my ally, Magdha, and the Parthians, and wholeheartedly agree that such treatment be destroyed, never to be seen again.

We in the Federation agree with our allies on the cruel and unusual treatment inflicted on the innocent masses at Beth-Gellert. May God bless their poor souls and punish those maltreators. Something must be done to eradicate such barbaric actions.

"Something must be done, indeed. The solution is a militar- er, diplomatic one. Ahem. Yes, something must be done!"

Secret message to J.L:

The trick is to take a really half-assed attempt at diplomacy. Then, when it inevitabally fails, you insert several hundred MBTs into the situation. It's worked on several occasions.

--Formal message from Titus Celmaetus. No, seriously.

Beth Gellert

OOC: Ah! [Falls over] A couple of weeks ago I noted some other nation mentioning that they'd come to know of BG via RB, but I didn't know that this was what they meant! Apparently I ought to do more ego-searches, hey?

Well, it's a little late, but I can provide some OOC information if anyone's interested. I've spent a lot of my time lately playing BG in the AMW group, so my mainstream nation hasn't progressed very quickly, and the situation is thus:

-Beth Gellert doesn't really exist in an official capacity, it's just a commonly used Anglicisation of one of many Celtic names given by the locals to their continent, which lies in the Indian Ocean.

-The continent, usually called Geletia (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v148/Chivtv/NS1/geletiapolitical.jpg), has -or had- 19 Celtic tribes with independent lands, until the Durcodi under Adiatorix started to conquer its neighbours, uniting eight of the tribes as the Kingdom of the Geletians. Another tribe was absorbed by Azazia, which maintains a colony on that funny little hook-like peninsula in the northeast.

-The united entity is called The Kingdom of the Geletians, and is the first to attempt to engage the free market and to have established a parliamentary democracy (though High King Adiatorix continues to act like a domineering President over his succession of weak Prime Ministers), and, basically, the people do not like it. Traditionally the tribes hold land in common, and the workers own the tools of work. Debt, rights, theft, employment (and unemployment) are all totally alien concepts to the Geletians, as is the Christian faith that Adiatorix has tried to import as a tool of imperial unity: Geletians have fought the classical world and its religions for thousands of years.

-Revolutions are sweeping the lands, both in the independent states and in the Kingdom, which treats the others as inferior satellites. There's lots of different revolutionary movements, but most are united in opposition to the Kingdom and hope to establish a revolutionary commonwealth across Geletia. Some revolutionary groups are motivated by history and tradition, believing that they can achieve socialism by just throwing-off western influences and returning to clan-based living without property rights; others have picked up on Marxism, various theories of Anarchism, and other socialist and communist movements in the outside world.

-Most of the revolutionaries, then, favour one or other form of direct democracy, and are revolting simply by workers taking-over private businesses and running them democratically, and by joining together to refuse debt repayments and block police efforts to enforce state laws.

-But, in some places, such as the jungles of the Selgovae lands, relatively authoritarian Maoist or Marxist-Leninist bodies have been able to assemble the most support, and launch guerrilla campaigns against the Kingdom and against local governments friendly to it. These forces may have committed some atrocities.

Otherwise, though, it is the Kingdom -which attempted an unpopular and failed invasion of Sel Appa in pursuit of mineral wealth and to crush left-leaning policies that were threatening Geletian business interests- that has created inequality, poverty, crime, and the swelling of prison populations, and that has attacked other Geletian states, often launching punative air-strikes against villages that put the authority of their community above some state or corporate plan.

The continent is some eleven million square kilometres, including remote tundra, forests and jungles, and an awful lot of difficult highland and isolated valleys, and until the late C20th it was essentially pre-industrial, so a lot of odd things still go on in isolation, and it is often difficult to confirm or deny reports from or about large parts of Geletia and its near six and a half billion towering Celts.

Well, I don't know if anybody's interested in any of that, anymore, but I thought that, now I've seen this, I may as well make the information available for anybody who wants to know. Cheers. Oh, there's a lot more history and crap in the Commonwealth in the Mainstream link in my sig, for anyone with as much time on their hands as I have :)
