The Continent of Irathria

The Continent of Irathria is a somewhat large, mountainous continent with diverse climates. The climate of Florintine, for example, is of the warm temperate variety. The warm winds from the south turn into the peninsula and travel across it. The warm currents follow. Then the warm winds mix with the cold winds from the north in the somewhat flat middle of the continent, but not before hitting the mountains to the west. This makes the southern slope of the mountains very rainy, but the middle extremely dry. It also makes the middle section very stormy. Terrible thunderstorms are not uncommon in the sea east of Florentine. The peninsula to the west of Florintine is somewhat the same, with different winds going north, passing over the peninsula, and hitting the mountains. The eastern peninsula is very cold and stormy. The cold northern winds reach it before the warm southern winds, making it well, cold. The cold warm winds do eventually meet the warm winds however, making the ocean off shore very dangerous.

BTW, I would like nations that may plan on joining to know that this is in no means an alliance, if an alliance happens, an alliance happens. But I just think that this would open up RP oppertunities, I mean in RL who do countries usually do things with? Thats right, their NEIGHBORS.

ooc: if i reckon correctly i remember the map artistry from a previous foray you had, one that I still work with despite its collapse. That's assuming you are who I think you are. If not more proof that I am an ass. Hooray for cryptic commentary. Anyways, it's a good map and I particularly like the attention to geographic and climatic detail - I've always thought them to be critical elements in developing a nation's character so to speak. I'd love to take part but I could only really do so within the format of a colonial system - an advanced long-standing colony perhaps, but it'd have to be something on the periphery of my nation nonetheless.

Either way, I do wish you the best of luck and if nothing else once all is off and running I'd be interested in starting IC relations if you'd like.

Yep, that be me. Now that football's over, I can finally do stuff like this. And I think a more informal approach would be better anyways rather than what happened last time. Oh, and of course their hopefully wont be a forum crash again.

Sorry, I really don't want colonies. I mean, what did Ethiopia do with its neighbors in colonial Africa? They certainly didn't have wars with them, or trade with them on a large scale.

Puppets are cool. I mean, beggers can't be choosers. I would rather have regular nations, but as long as their are more regular nations than puppets its fine. So its fine.

i completely understand the no colony thing, it makes sense... i'm just scratching my head at how to work around that and the whole isolation of my country IC... but yeah, forum crashes did kinda screw that whole thing up...

when I get back to an IC reason for relations the UK is itself nothing more than an amalgamation of different colonies and purchased territories... what if there were some native territory/country or what have you that for whatever reason ceded its sovereignty and such to the UK under the condition of being fully accepted as what I term a "home country"... more or less what that means is the top tier of the political structure, akin to say what Scotland is to the RL UK, or New York or California to the RL US. More or less it would be an exclave of the UK, fully developed as a post-industrial state or something. It wouldn't have to be large, then... but these are just some ideas

alright, so then yeah i guess just a nicely sized piece of land would do... preferrably with a deep and well-protected harbour so it can hold true to the whole maritime power thing. if it's along one of the stormier coasts that'd be fine just so long as it's not too cold of a climate, i like the subtropics myself... then again i don't know anybody who hates them... and anyways, i'll start working on the details and backhistory and fun stuff like that...

Sweet. Any particular place you would like? I'd suggest that middle part, that'd probably be best. I know the map isn't that big, I mean it used to be HUGE, like bigger than my computer screen big. I'll try to host it bigger.

I'll take your advice and go for that middle part, who knows I might even have local companies look for partners in building a canal across the flatter lands... we'll see who'd be interested I suppose.

Ok, I'll start fixing that part up for you. That would be an awfully large canal though, I mean that little orange highland in the middle of the middle part is about the size of Colorado, and my nation for example is the size of the Louisiana Purchase.

than it'll be one hell of a canal... or not... i didn't know how big the map was... well, i'll still be working on ways to link the northern and southern coasts to expedite trade... the UK is all about commerce and trade... and banking... factories are just too smelly and dirty... and not as pretty

A really good train system would work. Whatever works for you though. You could attempt that canal too, I mean I made one from the Red Sea to the Nile once. Note-Not a good idea

excellent, yeah, i was thinking wide-gauge heavy rail link between two port cities, yet to be named... more or less a ro-ro facility but for railcars perhaps? i don't know if such things can/do exist, but i'll look into it. That and I need good names now for cities and the territory.

I will take that big island in the bottom right side of the picture for the Dominion. That is if you want to RP with a person that has vampires, humans, and mutants (X-Men type) in his nation.

just a quick question, what about the possibility of native populations - is that doable, more or less I'd like to play around with the possibility of having second class citizens. And if so are they any rules or anything in particular you'd want me to do or not do with them?

anyway. you cant have all of this nation's territory, because it is spread out around a set of moderate-size bases throughout the world, but you can have "base 2" the second base and soon-to-be capital, if you want.

on an OOC note, I've worked out a preliminary sketch of my area's history. I've also given it a name so I don't have to continually refer to it as "my territory" or "my area". Henceforth, it shall be known as Kingsland, with its capital city as Charlotte.

Hi there! This is my one and only nation, and quite new. I would like to have a position for my country that would include the island south of the green territory, the island to the east of your northernmost island and a strip of the coastline near the green territory from the middle ofthe lower 'finger' of land to the end of the wedge of what would be the second island in my territory.

I would also like to have a native population. I'd been trying to think of how to have the origins of my country and I think I'd like to have remnants of the nomads your country is descended from.

Well, that particular island you are thinking about is taken. I forgot to color it green. But, I can suggest the Islands between me and Trans. Those would be fine. And the nomad thing would be cool.

That sounds fine, thank you. It would be interesting as well to work out some sense of regional history. For instance could I in the political sense claim that island anyway as a historical matter? It might be a fairly quiet claim like for instance the claims laid by some nations to parts of Antarctica or could depending on how the other player feels be somewhat more tense or even aggressive.

Usually people get mad when you just go out and claim something. Trust me, I've been there. But in this case, I am essentially running this continent in OOC, so sure. Is this where your whole nation is going to be? I know I'm kind of allowing colonies, but I'd really like not too.

This is my one and only nation. Also, please bear in mind that I'm not going to force the issue of the claim. As I said it could be a fairly passive one. Also my nation hardly poses a threat to his: it is only 14 million people and has a basket case economy.

If its your original country, I would have suggested taking a little bit more, but what you have for now is good I suppose. There is bound to be a ton of land left over anyways. You got the claim, dont worry.

EDIT: Also, is there anything else you want on those Islands? Like rivers, little islands around them, stuff like that? Because I'm making your map right now.

What I'm really looking for RIGHT NOW is some smallish countries. I'm worried that this is going to be a bunch of huge countries (in size) with one or two small island countries. I want this to look like Europe, with a bunch of tiny countries and a few bigger ones, you know, different than the rest of NS.

The island is called Wolfe Island. Named by Lord Halford J. Wolfe, who land a ship on the southern coast of the island in 1800. So, we have had it for a long time. I will name the bases and cities later. And tell what military I have there.

Well, I was making maps for everybody because its a lot easier as a paint file than the jpeg file its hosted as, but thank you for saving me the work!

Alright, how about the northwest corner of the continent? Since you'll trying to fit everything to proportions, I'll let you decide the size and borders (I'll probably need a medium-sized nation since I have almost 230 million people).

Just wanted to point out some basic locations I have sketched out so far, for when you make the individual maps. This (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/fbcatholicsfan/BarebonesLocations.jpg)is the map I've been working off of and I've taken a few liberties only to explain a few things in my history. One is that the spot marked as No. 1 is my area's capital, and sits upon a river/bay situation akin to Sydney, a drowned river valley. The second, and somewhat larger leap i've taken in absence of any specific direction is I made a geological rift zone running from that harbour I control northeast by No. 1 (just to the north and west of it actually) and then that continues more or less up to the north, northeast. A rift zone being where the earth is pulling apart, such as the Great Rift Valley in eastern African. Earthquakes are not uncommon along the rift and I think that could potentially provide some interesting natural disaster RPs in the future if you're cool with the whole thing. Other than that, I imagine that there are a few rivers and I'll eventually place cities upon them and all but I'm just sort of waiting to see what you do with the place.

Thats cool. The rift would also explain why there is a split between the two mountainous sides of the continent.
