OOC thread: why is this

Following on from MES's Thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=467625), I'd like to ask the community as a whole this:

Why is it that about a third of the players on NS (no names) always back up the actions of the first replyer (SP)? I've suddenly realised how easy it is to push other people around if you get to a thread first. anyway, no offence is meant to anyone, and please keep replys clear of flames and trolls.

Woot, 999 posts. someone call the police... :p

Because people like jumping on the percieved bandwagon. I'll prove it with this post.

My guess - due to the open nature of most forums and due to the fact that not everyone is on at the same time, whoever gets the first post will get more supporters, in the form of whoever's on before the other side replies with its own view.

I disagree :P.

I believe the reason why it seems like people are band waggoning is simply that the first person to reply often shares the same sentiments with the others, he just happened to be the first to post or notice the thread.

Most threads that you see these types of "dogpilings" in are something like, "Stanland to take over the World!" and the fist person to reply tells that nation to stand down or being destroyed. Of course everyone else is going to agree... it is just a commonly shared policy/view.

If, however, I was to post a thread saying, "Smithland to donate trillions to Orphans," and the first person to reply said 'We hate orphans; stop or die," I guarantee you that people would not join him just because.

It seems people tend to support the nation being invaded, then others do not want to jump on the other side. Also no one wants to join the side that is going to lose.

well yeah, stupid first posts wont get bandwagoned, but sometimes I've seen dogpiling by people who rarely are on the same side. okay, it only happens with fairly middle-of-the-road posts, but it can still happen.
