UK-Pacitalian Naval Exercise Ends a Success

A joint training exercise between the Royal Navy and the Pacitalian Naval Force concluded today. The exercise involved over two dozen warships off the northwestern coast of Isola Lampudesa, Acqua Verdi, Pacitalia and simulated a joint amphibious assault against what exercise planners called an enemy of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Pacitalia.

The exercise tested the two navies’ ability to operate together in a combat setting specifically hitting the areas of sensors, combat and communication systems. Rear Admiral Sir Gregory Lloyd represented the Royal Navy’s senior theatre commander and afterwards stated that “the joint Azazi-Pacitalian naval force tested their systems, along with those of our national military surveillance systems – both orbital and subsurface, against Tyrannia. We acquitted ourselves quite well of the challenge.”

Tyrannia was the name of the dictator-controlled state that opposed the two nations. By all official and un-official accounts the two navies performed remarkably well for their first joint operation. However, the exercise did provide both navies opportunities to assess other areas of their national defence. One anonymous Pacitalian naval official added that the exercise was a “precursory test to the general integrity of Pacitalia’s Marazulan coastal defences.”

While at home, the Admiralty commented that the exercise “proved to the international community that the Royal Navy had recovered” from its losses in the Novikovian War and is “quite ready to defend the UK and her allies as well as prosecute our enemies.” Defence analysts noted that this was the first operational deployment of a major UK surface action group since the Novikovian War.

Both navies made use of the publicized event to showcase some of their latest ships to not just the world but the populations of the UK and Pacitalia. In particular, Pacitalia offered the UK its first glimpse of the destroyer RPN Breningrad while the Royal Navy dispatched the new cruiser HMS Mandragora to take part in the exercises.

[ Moreno-Cruz releases Đ 52,2bn naval spending package ]
Greens demand money be used on environment, PSC calls for halt on military spending

Agustinate of National Defence Adm Rodrigo Moreno-Cruz MPP announced the ProDems new 52,2 billion doura spending program which will improve the navy's ability to defend the coasts, particularly the western islands from any future attempts on Pacitalian sovereignty. Pacitalia's 219 islands are seen as tricky to defend or protect because of the ridiculous amount of channels, straits and nooks among them.

The legislation call by Adm Moreno-Cruz came just hours after the United Kingdom and Pacitalia announced a highly successful joint naval exercise just off the coast from Basso di Forza Navale Pacitaliana Cosimanti (BdFNP-Cosimanti), on the northwestern tip of Isola Lampedusa. The two countries simulated defensive strategies against an imaginary mutual enemy, and said tests of electronic equipment, including sensors, satellites and radar, were a riotous success.

Adm Moreno-Cruz, the head of the Pacitalian Naval Forces under former prime minister Dr Timotaio Ell's administration, had long been concerned of the ability of the Pacitalian navy to defend its sovereignty through a naval attack, regardless of the assistance of the Organisation of Maritime Powers in any matter. Now, in his capacity as an elected member of the CAF and as the AoND, he has drafted a comprehensive security package that will see major improvements to communications and monitoring equipment and allow for easier cooperation between various national security agencies and arms of the military.

The package devotes Đ 20bn to launching and maintaining four new satellites to replace the aging Spotunti-class ultra-elevated surveillance craft, which were put into orbit in 1978. As well, Adm Moreno-Cruz allocated Đ 8bn to improving the network of subsurface radar and mass-object sensory equipment (MOSE) in Pacitalian waters, especially in so-called vulnerable entry points like near Isola Lampedusa.

Adm Moreno-Cruz has also announced he has commissioned Marinoceta to build four new SSGNs in a package component contract worth approximately Đ 6,3bn, with the new submarines starting patrols of the Marazuli by late this year. The submarines would be completed that early because Marinoceta has reportedly already begun construction on 19 new SSGNs at the Canzomoria Shipyards outside Sinistra.

Eight of the newly-minted Cemofara -class SSGNs are headed for the Amarenthian Republican Navy. Two were reportedly going to the Azazian Royal Navy for testing and evaluation, while another two were headed for the Moepoeian Navy. The other seven were reportedly going to stay in dry dock until a buyer could be found or they were needed in combat. However, now that number has been reduced to three, with the PNF raising the possibility of a future use for the extra three in the AORDO should Pacitalia join.

"The fact is, Marinoceta produces excellent quality submarines," the Admiral said in a press conference discussing both the operation and the spending package. "We do not want to see perfectly good craft go to waste."

Sorantanali's government has already spent over US$200bn since assuming power on 30th January, a stunning, marked change from the pennypinching, fiscally responsible days of Dr Timotaio Ell. However, Sorantanali's major to-date projects, the Amarenthian economic assistance programme, and this naval spending package, are largely responsible for the high spending figure.

Opposition parties heavily criticised the package, with Green leader Neros Constantakis today in the CAF saying the move "flies in the face of the government's earlier environmental sustainability targets and principles by denying that department the necessary money to operate". NPA leader Aria Speranza said she was unsure the military funding jump would even be successful.

Opposition/PSC leader Fernando Chiovitti said "Pacitalia does not need to spend any more money on the military. Our armed forces are solidly provided and some of the best trained and equipped in Atlantian Oceania. I urge the government to reconsider this and think about putting this money where it is really needed - social assistance."
