Alexandria
Races of the Colonies
Human
Humans were both the founders and the colonizers of Alexandria, having come from the century-old "New Earth," called Vega by its respective inhabitants. After gaining independence from the empire-like Vegan government, the colony Alexandria has severed all ties to its former rulers and recently joined into a trade agreement, as well as an alliance, with a nearby colony: the Union of Progressive Peoples. The two colonies have effectively merged, but still hold their seperations, similar to two states. They have kept the Alexandrian name, however, to describe the alliance.
History:
If someone were to be asked about the greatest threat to future progression of mankind, the answer would depend on the individual being asked. Ask a civilian from an inner colony world, they would claim that the only real threat is the companies and what they are willing to do from money. Ask a pilgrim in a distant outer-veil world; the increasing threat of rumored alien killing machines takes over. Ask the TTA (Terran Trade-Alliance) or the Colonial Marines, both hailing from Vega, the “New-Earth,” the answer comes from the Neo-Communistic state of the UPP (Union of Progressive Peoples), a relatively new colony controlling several small worlds. However, ask any big-wig suit sitting on a chair of power in any Vegan corporation of any prestige, all will respond the same…Alexandria.
It seemed harmless at first. Less than 50 years after the colony was originally formed, which was, in itself, about a century after the colonization of Vega, the companies that had invested so much time and money into its urbanization realized the population base had grown so massive; many citizens weren’t even working for them anymore. The last census read 2million but it became clear the number was closer to 10 million. When several outer veil colonies declared independence, Alexandria decided to reluctantly follow. They formed their own government and placed the seat of power at the capitol colony. However, the other worlds were quickly overrun and many simply surrendered without a fight, ending the revolution before it began. Alexandria, however, was not given the option to surrender. Previously the perimeter militia had struck and secured Ventix, a major constructionary world, cutting off the supply runs from the corporate staff on planet. The staff defected and the company head on Alexandria were quickly deported. When the ICC (Interstellar Commerce-Commission) turned its attention on Alexandria after the other worlds fell, they discovered a larger threat than the other worlds put together.
In a few short months, Alexandrian Government’s Military arm, “PanCore” had taken control of a major manufacturing complex and from Ventix, they produced a sizable force in a very short time. By the time the ICC had gotten their forces together to strike back, PanCore forces struck first, securing another foothold, this time with the Crestus Prime Garrison systems. Previously un-colonized, PanCore discovered these worlds were a great castle wall for normal shipping lanes. There…they stopped. Alexandria, aware they may be spreading too thin, fortified themselves. With enough rich planets under their control, they turned their attention to making the most of what they accomplished.
The ICC was not pleased and a corporate military force attempted to strike at the Garrison systems. They failed. The ICC quickly requested the CMC (Colonial Marine Corps) move in. However, the TTA stopped the attack and re-wrote the orders to simply barricade the system and refuse entry of any vessel. This created a stalemate that exists today. Because so many illegal shipping lanes exist beyond the primary ones listed, trading still exists between Alexandria and outer veil colonies in the surrounding sectors.
The TTA and Alexandria don’t consider each other threats and only the pressure from the Companies keep the CMC positioned there. There have even been reports of the vessels from PanCore and the CMC engaging in illegal fraternization. Defections between military personnel are highest at this border.
When Alexandria separated, it created a semi-democracy. The people in power were voted there, but the citizens are not, by all means, and free. However, many tolerate this situation since it’s far better than most other colonies get, and it is not exactly slavery of course. Most understand that the government asks a lot of their civilians since the growing Nation is still on an uphill climb. The whole sector is on a constant defense stance. Everyone is expected to pitch in and help the effort to defend and improve the nation. The Alexandrian Government, which many refer to as the “Sphere”, tables six people, each representing a different facet of the community…from farming and manufacturing to administration and military.
Every citizen is expected to serve four years for the government in one of these areas before moving into a career of choice. It is a form of military draft but the military is not the only option. The majority of the population is eager to work for the civilization that they helped create. Many understand that expanding the power of the Sphere and protecting the borders are paramount especially with the constant pressure from the ICC. PanCore currently patrols a sizable motive force at Ventix and at Alexandria. Crestus Prime stations more static personnel and usually serves no more than a port for the Pan Core forces. Defensive stations make a direct attack on Crestus futile. Any attempt to work around Crestus and attack Ventix or Alexandria directly would result in an advance notice as perimeter scanners stretch out far from the worlds, often using a system of remote probes to relay signals for optimum efficiency. The ICC, however, completely ignores Abdullah and still allows vessels to pass through the Crestus shipping lane back to the CSC.
Corporations still exist on Alexandria and some are rather large, rivaling those of Vega. However, they all must obey strict laws put forward by the Sphere preventing monopolies or takeovers. They also work with the Sphere but hold little power deciding the fate of the people and government.
The reason why Alexandria is considered so much a threat to the ICC, more than the UPP, is simply because of their refusal to follow ICC regulations and the richness of the world they run. Alexandria is considered the single best colony-world in known space. Some say it resembles Vega.
Present Day Alexandria:
Over the past decade, Alexandria has gained its full freedom from Vega, with the so-called “New Earth” relaxing its grip over the trading lines due to several inner coupes and a shift in the government. While tensions still remain between the still-growing colony and the empire-like Vegan Earth, they have agreed on a truce for the time being, albeit one with underlying hostilities. Fortunately, the ICC has removed the CMC as well as their blockade upon trade routes going into and out of the colony, possibly from the sight of the newly-inducted Mariposa Cruisers patrolling the system.
Less than eight years ago, Alexandria "absorbed" a nearby colony, the Union of Progressive People, adding them into its small list of controlled worlds. At the moment, however, the UPP has remained independent of Alexandria, working together with the colonies in an alliance but staying seperate in both political and social affairs, and there has been talk of susceeding among its leaders.
Planets and Stellar Objects of Note
Alexandria
The most hospitable planet within the Alexandrian system, many colonizers have claimed it to much resemble Earth, before it was corrupted by Man of course. Alexandria's capital is currently the largest city on the planet.
-Cainus and Caltro
The two moons of Alexandria, Cainus and Caltro have almost the exact same orbital pattern and are never seen apart from eachother. Uncolonized currently.
Ventix
The main industry of the colonies, Ventix was taken from Vegan control during the Cold War and transformed into a massive mining and production center for the Alexandrian military due to its seemingly limitless supply of rich, metal-laden crust. However, being so close to the Ventix Belt has led this to be a very dangerous place, and massive, and expensive, orbital defense cannons have been placed near all mining facilities to prevent asteroids from damaging the equipment.
-Jerno, Rexus, and Calvian
These three moons all seem to be trapped satellites from the Ventix Belt which passed to close to the planet, getting trapped within its gravitational circle.
Ventix Belt
Named for its close proximity with Ventix, the Ventix Belt is a widespread asteroid ring, holding its place as the third closest stellar object to the system's star. Occasionally, an asteroid will break off and plummet towards the planet, but is always shot down before it can do any damage.
Filled with valuable minerals, teams are sometimes to sent up to gather the metals found inside the space rocks.
Rodina
The fourth and smallest planet from the system's "sun," Rodina was the single world, as well as the main constructionary shipyards, of the UPP before its merge with Alexandria. Approximately a tenth of the planet is covered with the massive cities and factories of the Union, all expanding in a circle from the original landing spot of the first colonizers more than fourty years ago.
Crestus
A bastion of defense for the Alexandrian colonies, Crestus serves as both a garrison and a checkpoint for all patrols. The planet was taken from Vegan control during the Cold War, as with Ventix, and stands outside the perimeter of the Ventix Belt. It is heavily fortified and is a major center for the military.
Level of Technology
Because Alexandria is essentially a colony that branched off from its original colony, it technology has developed a bit slower than most, the majority of funds being spent on building homes and cities. There is a strong military presence, however, but mainly off-world, the only law-enforcement on the civilian worlds being the standard police.
The military that one finds off Alexandria and Rodina, however, is fairly advanced, armed with some of the best weapons used off Vega. Generally wearing the standard LS-229 model combat suit and displaying off their odd-looking gauss rifles, the soldiers of Alexandria can be seen patrolling the grounds of Ventix and Crestus.
Within the depths of space, however, lies the pride and joy of the colonies; making its route from Ventix, to Rodina, and then towards Crestus is the Mariposa-Class Heavy Cruiser. Though mainly for show, the Mariposa stands as a shining beacon of the colony's glory for its citizens; there are currently six in active service, with more in construction on both the Ventix and Rodina shipyards.
