Background: The FNS (FederaciĆ³n y in Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile.
de NaciĆ³nes Suramericanos) is a union of the countries of Argentina, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Uruguay. The current president is Fernandez Mendoza, an Argentine politition. The vice president is Juan Pena, a Chilean. Elections are every 5 years. Next election is in 1949.

The 300-representative congress has 120 seats evenly distributed between the member nations, with the rest awarded by population. The major political parties and their seats are as follows:

Socialist Party-43 seats
Primarily Uruguayan representatives, but also some Peruvians.

Christian Democrats-39 seats
Rightist, and popular principally with Argentina and Chile.

Moderate Democrats-110 seats
Centrist, and liable to split apart at any moment. Still holds the plurality.

Unification Party-98 seats
Wants to prevent Uruguay leaving, and annex Paraguay. Popular, but divided on social issues. Includes a lot of Bolivians.

Other-10 seats
Includes the Dissolution Party, a group that wants the FNS disbanded.

Uruguay Protests!
The streets of Montevideo were packed with 50,000 protesters in the most massive anti-annexation protest since the formation of the FNS. The protest was organized by the Uruguayan Liberation Movement, a group rumored to have close ties with Brazil.

Government Offers More South American Nations Membership
The FNS formally offered membership to the nations of Paraguay, Ecuador, and Brazil Saturday. None of the invited members would comment, but political commentators consider the odds of them joining slim.
