OOC Thread: What's wrong with this?

Since I started posting in II about three or four months ago, I've noticed a few times where I see a thread where participants are routinely grilled with insults, accusations, flames, and being blasted with the infamous I.G.N.O.R.E. cannon, for in some cases, very silly reasons.

So I'm here to ask the entire II population. Why do we fight over small issues? Why do we liberally use the I.G.N.O.R.E. cannon? Why can't we just get along, negotiate problems civily, and promptly? And why can't we give new people helpful advice, instead of flaming them for posting in the wrong forum?

Please don't turn this thread into a flame war. I'm looking for each of your opinions. And if you use an example, please do not use names. We already probably know about it, and I don't want this thread to turn into a dump real fast. You might think this thread is looking for trouble, but from what I've seen, II is in trouble because of the bad attitudes that happen around here, as not only does it get rid of old members, but it also scares away new blood, which is paramount to a healthy forum. I'm looking for constructive thoughts, criticisms, and solutions to this problem, so that way this problem would become less and less common.

In other words, why can't we just get along? :fluffle:

Note: PLEASE KEEP THIS CIVIL! I'll ask to have it locked if this gets into a flame war of accusations and threats! I want a civil conversation.

because a lot of people join up and then jump straight into wars without reading the stickies, and then either continute to not read stikies after being told repeatedly or just don't understand the rules.

I only fire the I.G.N.O.R.E. cannon when someone blatantly states that they "Glass" my nation when they themselves are only 2 weeks old. Nations that are 2 weeks old don't have a strong enough eocnomy to have nukes let alone a satelite with nukes.

There's a culture on NS, passed down from generation to generation, that makes it seem like it's the accepted and almost expected thing to do when someone makes fun of a noob, rather than helping them.

The answer is quite simple, frankly. NS has always been the same for years - there's always going to be people who budge in with unpleasantries, and there's always going to be disputes between people that should never have happened with more undersatnding. The reason as to why it seems to have increased over the months is the simple matter that certain members of the forum has been able to publicize whatever problems they have with others (believe me, I have been targets of those in the past), or that they simply somehow rose into the spotlight for the scrutiny of a greater number of NS players.

The answer? There are always going to be disputes and problems that involves players who can't get alone for whatever reason. This is also a freeform RP. If you don't like a person and/or you know that dealing with him/her will cause tangible disputes, then simply don't deal with them. You don't need the silly "IGNORE!!11"-whatever, just avoid interacting with them too often. You see one of those disputes, just don't get mixed into it (which was why I didn't post in a particular thread). And ignore it - it shouldn't eb any of your business to intervene by offering judgement. I have to confess that this is a quite nonchalant and cynical approach, but if we all do this, then the problem itself won't pose as much a concern or worry to us as before.

I personally will only use the I.G.N.O.R.E. cannon on foolish n00bs (the ones who put star destroyers into blatantly MT threads, and on those who invade the world. i'll usually explain WHY i'm doing so as well (okay, sometimes i cant be bothered) and point them at the stickies.

and the internet is famous for people fighting over the most foolish of reasons, because what would normally turn into a fist-fight is limited forcibly to words here, and tensions cant be gotten rid of quickly with the handing out of a few black eyes, and thus cause resentment, which causes players to mistreat others who were not part of the previous (resentment-causing) arguement, and thus it spreads. hopefully, eventually everone will grow up and learn to not react hostile-ly to everything which even vaugly resembles flaming or trolling.

just my tuppeny-worth.

Well I never use the IGNORE cannon and always try to push the noobs in the right direction.

I just ride out the unpleasentries.

So far I've somhow traveled back in time to get assasinated, pulled off various 'vanishing' acts, and aven managed to change resaults of entire conflicts this way in directions never before seen.

I love the 'edit' button!

The IGNORE cannon is right for when some n00b comes in and on his first post, makes a new thread and declares, "I declare war on the world!!!!!!". Then you tell him to read the stickies and his next response is: "My laser beam rays of death zap you to death and fry out your eyeballs!!!!" Really, what can a man do in such circumstance?

Very true about those sorts of new players. That I can understand. However, some can always be trained...

By the way, good work keeping it civil. ;)

Maybe I'm jaded, but what's wrong with sticking someone on the ignore list?
On another site, my list is longer than my arm. :/

But solutions? No matter how unhelpful this sounds (and it is), why bother with overly belligerent nations or riffraff that can't tell their arses from their elbows? It's not the most kind thing you can do to them, ignoring them, but, hey, it saves you some headaches, at least.

Then maybe perhaps a list should be made up on what type of RP's and what level certain people want? Like those who just want war, those who are much more personal as in inter-nation relations, those who are beginners, and maybe those who are willing to teach others how to play?

Just a thought...

I remember you

it was a mistake. you said it on the thread. you misread the starting date.

NO d feelings though.

Oh, and high five, my nation wouldn't let me on the forum and it deleted.

That's not a bad thought, but there are some nations out there who would want to be in several categories, ie I like Inter-nation and war (war foremost).

Personally I don't interact with people you don't even try to spell-check and have choppy sentences. EVen if they want to learn and read the stickies, they still have extremely poor quality RPs and there's no point. If they start beefing and checking their grammar, I'd pay attention, otherwise I just don't bother.

All you have to do is to add your name more than once. Simple. ;)

Because an ignore list isn't always good. You can't see what they do, and eventually when they get better, you wouldn't know.
