OOC: make sense, of course then theres the whole honour problem and the 'god-emporer'. The rank and file will think thye'll get struck down for diobaying him...

yeah as oposed to the "demonix" that they KNOW [or think they know] will strike them down in the night if they continue to resist. hehe.

incidently, once it gets light enough to see them properly, the hawks will stop makeing their runs. psychological warfare and all that.

2 or three hours game time from false dawn to true dawn..
so, roughly two hours untill they stop makeing their flights. hehe.
i must say though, this night must have had plenty of moon and star light for all the stuff both sides have been doing.

OOC: Personally I wouldnt put Austian officers with Austian men. This would slow down integration and may encourage the troops to rebel.

IC:
"Perhaps. But I am still unconvinced." Replied William. "Maybe we should enslave some and release the others?"

"perhaps if you simply give each man the choice of who to surrender to, without telling them the effects of such a choice, and each of our leaders do as they will? 'twould make for an intersting choice. at any rate, if at all possible we would be very pleased if we could get some bowmen out of the deal. it is an area in which we are decidedly lacking, as you can see."

General Regulus seemed to be taking in all this information listening carefully. He waited for the others to finish what they had to say then spoke,

"I do not agree with turning anyone loose..."

He watched the others reactions,

"Those who do not surrender to be imprisoned or drafted into our armys should be killed on the spot, it is the first act of defyance and SHOULD not be tolerated"

After a short pause he continued,

"Many times i have seen troops surrender in battle, armys are regrouped THEN! they are faced once again by the very men who defeated them the first time...i say STOP this problem before it even has the chance to start!"

The ostian archers marched towards the gates to join the infantry in the city. The walls and the gate had been taken, the soldiers would wait untill a decision was reached by their superiors.

"kill them when they are already beaten and have surrendered, and it is true you will not have to face them again. but each battle you fight, those men who are there, knowing they have no chance of simply returning home, will fight all the harder. the familys of those who fought will resist in every way they can, rather than peacfully submitting.

if every man woman and child in this land is out to kill us, sabotage our equipment, steal our supplys, and so on, how do you expect your men to survive this campagine? how do you expect to profit from such a war if, at the end of it, you face hostile locals who constantly rebel and revolt and resist? would it not be easyer if they willingly accept our rule? that way, we are fighting only the soldiers on the battlefield, and the only strong resistance in heart and mind will be the rulers and their closest bodyguards.

are the benifits not planely obvious to you?"

"I think she is right brother. Let them live. That is all we can do if we want this conquest to be permanent."

General Kingston at last spoke up.

"We should give them this offer:
All who surrender to be set free with a few days supplies but no weapons.
All who wish to join us being allowed to do so, recognising that they could be deployed anywhere, and will have to learn Latin.
All who refuse to surrender to be defeated, and if they live to be enslaved.
Any high-ranking officers, of which there will not be many, to be executed. Lower-ranking officers to be given the same deal as their men.
The whole alliance must show a united front on this. Any slave-taking should be limited to those who refuse to surrender.

In this way we show ourselves better than their present ruler; we do not force them to fight. Thus the true conquest, not just invasion, of their country begins."

Admiral Knox was nodding; this was Incognitia's view.
"Unless anyone of us cannot accept this deal we propose ceasing fire, ceasing all military operations, but making ominous looking preparations, while we give them our offer."

"We must give them enough to get clear of the city. Those supplies we can take from the city's own stocks, once the whole place has fallen. Otherwise we will have starving mobs roaming around, and most of the good we have done by not killing them on the spot is lost."

General Nakamura added his few obans into the discussion

"most of the defenders here would have been peasants taken away from their farms. let them return peacefully so they can go home with their families and continue to farm.

if we kill them now we will have nobody to work the land, no more local supplies and civilians fighting us behind the lines.

this act of mercy will show them that we are not uncultured barbarians and will help us in the long run"
Frozopia
01-05-2006, 20:16
"That is assuming they havent burnt the supplies. If I was ruling this city, the moment the attackers breached the wall I would burn the supplies. But you are right. We will give them what we find in the city granaries."

"I shall send a party under flag of truce, then. If any of you wish to send men with it, that would be helpful, in making it clear to the Austians that we act together."
The cannons were ordered to cease firing, and a party of men was soon gathered around the central cannon, Big Beth; an ensign carried a furled flag of truce, and they awaited accompanying parties from the allies. A hastily written scroll carrying the terms of the offer was passed to the captain leading the party; however it was planned to announce the terms aloud, so that they could spread to all the Austians before an answer was demanded.

"I suggest we give them one hour to consider after the terms have been read out."

Pi also agreed with this plan of action, in as much as it would actually happen and work, even though there were better ones, and so joined the group.

messengers were sent for the hawks to stop their flights. it was getting light anyway. work continued on filling the pits, however, under cover of some borrowed allied bowmen. the bowmen mostly just stood there looking omonus, but anyone stupid enough to take a shot at the enjiners got a shot right back.

General Regulus listened to the other commanders and finally after a brief quiet moment he replyed,

"I will accept those terms stated for their surrender, I will not order the death of any man who surrenders..they shall be given full quarter without question"

He continued,

"Good of you to join us general Nakamura, your dutys held you up elsewhere i would assume..understandable though"

Regulus looked at a ceniturion standing in the corner. The man had already been in battle being one of the officers who lead the first charge under Antonious, he was very dirty looking obviously seeing some action on the front,

"Florian, you will go with the party to discuss the surrender"

The officer saluted, his hands were covered in anothers blood,

"Yes general! your wish is my command"

He turned and left the room. General Regulus grinned addressing the others in conversation,

"If they attack under a white flag...i will not hesitate to kill anyone, i know you all understand that..."

With Pi, Florian and Fujimoto, the party seemed complete.

Captain Jones, whose men still made up the core of the group, called over to the Austians; he showed why he had been chosen as he spoke Austian and was an ex-NCO; the nearest thousand men must have heard, meaning the whole army would know within minutes.
"Where is your commander? We come to offer a final chance to surrender and save your lives."

Pi quietly spoke to the group

"General, this is your last chance to surrender your men. If you refuse then our terms will be announced by heralds such that your entire army can hear, and we will allow each of your soldiers to decide for himself.
Our offer is:
Every man who surrenders will have his life spared.
Every man who wishes may join one of the allied armies.
Every man who does not wish to fight will be sent on his way with some food but no weapons.
Every man who fights on will find his life forfeit, into either death or slavery.
The standard terms do not apply to your commanders and yourself, obviously, but we will spare your lives and keep you as honourable captives.
Here are the terms in writing" handing over the scroll
"You have half an hour to decide before the heralds tell your men directly."
At this Jones turned his horse around and withdrew, the rest of the party following.

As promised, the heralds were preparing themselves. At intervals around the Austians, men with loud clear voices and passable Austian were getting into position, with small escorts carrying large shields to cover them against arrow fire. They would speak only when given the word.
The message would directly reach the outer ring of Austians, and from there word would spread in mere minutes to all the Austians in the city. If the General refused, his men could decide for themselves.
(OOC: I know taking the commanders as prisoners wasn't part of the deal we agreed, but I offered it on my own initiative because otherwise they have no incentive to agree, and if they agree their whole army will surrender, not just most of it.)

I'll nagotiate with these Heralds." As the aide rode off he turned and rode back towadrs the enermy, "We accept but we wish to know what you mean about honourable captives, what conditions pray tell? "The terms are as written, the stores will remain intact..of course, what good are they to us burned to the ground..a waste of supplys am i not mistaken?"

"If our terms are not accepted..who knows the outcome, it is a very good agreement..that will spare peoples lives"

He awaited the reply...

Meanwhile the catapults were being brought into the city followed by auxillarys and archers. The infantry were organizing themselves into formation preparing for their orders, Antonious moved to the front of the ranks where his men could see him,

"If they do not accept our terms!..WE WILL RUN THEM INTO THE GROUND!"

He yelled at the top of his lungs, the legionaires tapped their swords of sheilds letting out a loud cheer.

02-05-2006, 22:23
A loud cry echoed through the air as the legionaires cheered, at the sound of metal on metal was loud and Florian grinned,

"It is a very good offer honorable leaders...there is no point of fighting for what is lost when more can be gained in the future, those men are worthy of life...they came to defend their city today but it is not in your favor this time..."

"This is an honorable request..do not consider it a threat..please"

The cheered died down and the excitement ended aswell. The ostian army was ready for what ever the decision, their blood boiled and their spirits were as high as the clouds.

General Regulus heard the cry from outside the walls,

"They have a strong morale..."

He looked at General Nakamura,

What is more, they will take home, and spread, the story of how we, the Alliance, spared their lives when they thought death was certain. We will need to govern this country, afterwards. A massacre of men who have surrendered is really not the best way to start."

He watched their reactions,

"Still General Tiberius took prisoners...showing mercy to the heathens, when the general was killed in action...i came into power and things changed, the enemy hated me with a passion...they called me the butcher and their hate became so great they put steady pressure on our borders, one of them even took a swipe at my eye leaving me this hideous scar...it helps me to remember why i do not share this mercy you all speak of...i was going to spare him..untill he cut me open..."

You may surrender and go home quietly, provided with a few days food but stripped of all weapons.
Or you may join one of our armies. If you make that choice, further arrangements will be put in place to allow you to choose which one to join.
We emphasise this is a free choice, and we will accept the decision of each individual."

OOC: Could have predicted that. So now all your army knows; or at least most of it does, and the rest will within minutes.

The Austians were not yet on the move, and little news seemed to have filtered out from their High Command.
For that reason, it was decided to use the heralds put in place.
Trumpets sounded, to attract attention, and then in loud clear Austian, from all around the Austian forces, men spoke these words:
"Your general has accepted our terms of surrender. Under these terms, every one of you has a choice.

OOC: It seems ulikly that you have so many HEralds that can speak the language if a nation thats been isolationist for so long. But, hey! Who cares. Can you just give me some info on how they decide, where do they go ect?

OOC: I'm sure in an army of 10,000 I can gather a couple of dozen who speak the language, or can read a prepared message in it.

IC: Preparations were being made, with all those who could speak basic Austian gathered to handle the outcoming troops.
It was announced to the closest end of the Austian army, and was repeated every few minutes, that all should start heading West.
As each man came west, he was asked whether he wanted to join up, or to be sent away.
All those leaving were made to place each part of their military equipment in a relevant pile, before being sent further west to await the issuing of supplies.
All those wishing to join were welcomed, and sent north, to await the question of which army to join.
Any man who didn't know, was told to turn around, walk to the back of the army, and come back when he was sure.

Some ostians came foward with knowlage of the Austian language and also announced the terms stated and the choices to be made. Mostly educated officers could speak the language enough to get the point across, General Regulus had informed his officers of the changed plan.

Other officers reformed their troops best they could while medical staff attended to the wounded.

ooc: just assumeing this worked, it wasn't exactly a big deal, and baseing the language thing on stuff that happend in the Time thread...

IC: Pi and her men had easyly prevented the distruction of the stores once they had informed the men of why they had been given such orders and their results. the bigger challange had been preventing the Austian troops from then raiding the stores themselves. however, while hand to hand combat was not something she was particularly good at, diplomacy and the arts of war were her strong points, and she used them to her advantage.

as a result, few of the supplys had actually been destroyed, at least so far as she could tell.

she was mildly surprised to discover that a couple of the mid ranked officers she ran into could speak, admitiedly broken, Angerman. but, as one of the men discreatly reminded her, this was not as surprsieing as one might think. Angermanland and Aust had both been essentually seperated from the outside world for a long time, but occasionaly they had come into contact with each other. reports as to weither the incident in the south island had been invasion, colonisation, or something else were confused but it was a knowen fact that it had happend and that the men from the sea had been Austians.

this had made the task much easier. once it was compleated, she had... well, comandeered, for want of a better word... a couple of those officers, and headed north to where a runner had informed her the decision as to which army to join would be presented to those Austians who had chosen to fight for the allies.

The newest military operation in Aust had already begun.
A substantial naval force, comprised of 100 ships of the line, and all supporting vessels, including Angerman-style dominance class, using Bambinio as a base, was sent to blockade Aust City.
They were even now sailing down the coast towards Aust's capital.
Once in place they would establish a blockade of each of entrances and exits through the reef suitable for large vessels; the dominance, 20 in all, would cruise to prevent other smaller vessels escaping.
The city would be blockaded until the government surrendered, and gave the allies all the territory they demanded.

with the Austian navy seemingly out of the way all the kirisuban warjunks joined the armada, Lord General Nakamura on his command ship.

most of the Kirisuban forces would travel by ship ready for action if needed 1000 of them remaining at Bambino.
