The vast, yawning void of space, somwhere near Saturn, were at present empty. The faint solar wind and occasional passing clot of dust were all to disturb the emptyness. Presently the most interesting activity in the area consisted of the collision of two hydrogen molocules, which is quite improbable and was most likely occuring for the first time in this square mile of space. Nobody noticed though, because it was so very dull.
Now, something exciting was about to happen.
With a suddenness that might have startled anybody nearby, a ship appeared with a sound that would have sounded like 'Whooosh!' had there been anything to carry the sound of the ships arrival.
There wasnt, so it didnt.
It was a large ship, nearly a mile and a half by Earth standards. The contents might have suprised many Earthlings or most other carbon-based Oxygen-breathers.
The ship was not horribly be-weaponed, in fact, it appeared to be almost devoid of weaponry, at least in the traditional sense. The hull was smooth and rounded, with a steely sheen to it, and a hint of blue. Its four massive main engines pushed it forward at a stately speed approaching something like half the speed of light.
Soon it was approaching the orbit of the Fourth Planet, the effect of its blued hull on the red of this new planet was somewhat pleasing to the intelligences on the ship.
To any on the next planet, one seething with what was generaly defined as life, the ship detected what it assumed to be signs of technology, the sort its owners craved. It decelerated quickly enough to make it clear that anybody on board was either dead or at least very, very, very flat.
On reaching its transmission range, it began to broadcast.

The ship continued to float idly in space, repeating its message over various bands using different methods, hoping that, just possibly, just this one time, somebody might respond.

Commander, we just detected a Space Fold Event near Saturn. An object just entered Realspace traveling at .5 Lt.

The commander, an older but alert officer rushed over to the command station to look over the operators shoulder.

“Let’s see the readings. Hmmmm… It appears to have made a course correction towards Mars so something is in control of it. Can you detect any signals from it?”

“No sir, there are no emissions that could be considered any known communications used.”

“I’ll inform the upper channels. You follow protocol and keep tracking that thing. Let me know if there are any changes.”

A while later:

Commander, the ship passed Mars in its course toward Earth and then simply stopped. It must have monstrous inertial dampeners. It is transmitting a data stream.”

“Let’s see it.”

The officer rerouted the data feed to the display unit.

“What the hell is that?”

“I am not sure; it appears to be an old machine code. I’ll run it through the conversion.”

He linked to the computer and managed to get the AI to locate an old compiler. He then ran the message through and displayed the results.

“Well, I’ll be damned. Send this message and forward both to the First Contact teams.”

The commander quickly composed a message and gave it to the officer.

Following the transmission was a colmplete data file upon the English language along with coordinants to the docking port of the Space Tower jutting into orbit from the eastern pacific equator.

It was not easy to miss an artificial structure that reached into high orbit. The 20 kilometer diameter city atop the structure was busy with several ships arriving and departing. The coordinants directed the alien ship to a sutably sized docking bay, its massive doors open and inviting.

The airlock door of the ship, which was rather ineffecient in any case, spiraled open, releasing a cloud of mist that resulted from the slight overpreassure of the Seven Spinner ship. One might argue that this was asthetics or merely a result of the fact that the ship had been traveling for some time and was long overdue for maintenance.
What emerged was essentially a collection of levers attached to a low-slung roughly ovoid body on treads. The levers swung into place and what looked like a mechanical version of an eye leveled itself with the spaces occupants. One of the four arms (each with between three and eight fingers) made a gesture.
"U-55012-250 diplomatic unit Seven Spin Clans Earth much sadness errors communication improve time more material gathered translated." The roughly four foot tall assembly made what might have been a bow after this declaration (this would have been made in a single breath, had the android been capable of breathing), which was made with near-perfect pronunciation and a near total lack of electronic buzz.
The photoreceptor swung back up and refocused on those standing before it.

"Don't you just hate it when they transmit in binary?"

Ensign Mageno, of the Snake Eater ship, the Intrepid-class S.E.N Firefox, stared at the data readouts in front of him, goggling at the sheer stream of data his screen was currently scrolling through,"I know I graduated from the Academy with honours in Computer Sciences, but that doesn't mean I can read binary off the top of my head."

"Why don't you quit your moanin, and let the computer translate it then," came the voice of Ensign Michelle Palmer, who was currently lying on her back under a panel of the the console she normally sat at, replacing a burned out gel-pack... that was what happened when you left them too long.

Mageno took a moment to admire her figure, and allowed himself a slight smile. Only onboard ten weeks, and already she had the attention of most of the male crew. Luckily for him, he spent almost every duty shift with her, and this had allowed them to get very close. Still, he snapped out of his daydream to tap the console, and let the message translate,"Well... looks like we have two signals. One coming from the new ship, and one has a Balroggan signature."

"Well, we are close to one of their stations. We'd better tell the bridge about this."

He tapped his combadge,"Ensign Mageno to Lieutenant Jerim."

"Jerim here, what is it Ensign?"

"Sir, we've finished with the message from that new ship down here, and it looks like we picked up two signals. The reciever must have mixed them when it picked them up."

"And?"

"The first is from the new ship, the second is Balroggan."

"Confirmed. Alright Ensign, we'll take it from here, Jerim out."

Palmer sat up, the old gel-pack in her hand. Mageno looked at her,"Hey, do you want to get dinner tonight?.."

"Yes, I heard it Lieutenant. Hail the Balroggan station, see what they know."

"Channel open, sir."

"This is Captain Sokolov, of the Snake Eater ship Firefox. What information do you have on this new ship?"

The probe felt a momentary flicker of something that might have been an emotion. For just a moment.
It checked with its programming and relayed its findings back to home, then reopened its channel again.

Once the ship was entirely within the docking bay, the huge doors shut and the bay pressurized to a single atmosphere. A single docking arm moved into position to connect with the obvious docking ring protruding from the side of the massive ship. The arm stopped a short distance away to allow the foreign ship to complete its own docking cycle against the arm.

Once the docking was complete, several First Contact personal approached the ship and waited for the visitors to appear. There were security forces present both visibly and hidden just in case. You were never completely sure of anyone’s intentions and The Empire didn’t make simple mistakes like that.

Doctor Adams, the head of the team hastily gathered to carry this first contact meeting, looked over his team. He had gathered experts in Xeno-Biology, Cyber-Technology, and a few other fields. All his team members were Childer but he was Ta’Nar. The outward differences could not be noticed but inside, their minds were completely different.

The Ta’Nar came to this planet almost 700 years ago, bringing a nation of humans along with them. The Ta’Nar was a race of alien mentats that evolved out of their bodies thousands of years ago but were shipwrecked on a primitive planet. Using their strong Psionic abilities, they possessed the bodies of the local inhabitants and guided their society so they could transfer their Empire to another world. The Ta’Nar remained in charge of the Empire, guiding their humans through several changes. A few years ago they evolved the humans into the Childer, lesser versions of themselves that were still tied to existence to some sort of body but they could shed them and attach themselves to another. Specially designed clones were created to enable the Childer and Ta’Nar to interact with the rest of humanity. The Ta’Nar tried to guide sentience wherever they found it.

The hiss of escaping air marked the opening of the airlock. The First Contact team waited for their visitors to show themselves. When U-55012-250 introduced itself, Adams stepped forward.


“Hello, I am Robert Adams, the head of the First Contact team. On behalf of the Emperor himself, I welcome you to the Balrogga Empire.”

The 'eye' swivled on its mount, extended forward slightly, and blinked a few times. Each 'blink' consisted of the eye switching through different wavelengths and vision methods, 'checking somebody out' is a term often used far to lightly.
The eyestalk dipped again.
"Greetings Robertadams First Contact. Unit is pleasure to meet you. Seven Spin Clans greetings offered much regret could not attend directly. This unit acts as transfer. Clans hear all heard by this unit. Much buisness discuss where is place of discussion query."

"If you follow us, I will lead you to a discussion room. Just so you are aware, your ship and yourself will be scanned but we will not interfere with any detected signals. I am sure you are scanning me as we speak. Just getting it out in the open before we continue."

Adams leads their visitor to the forementioned room a short distance away. A large window overlooks the visitor's ship. Several crew are examoning the hull for potential damage, being careful not to get too close so as not to activate any self-defense protocols.

"What would you and your Clans wish to discuss?"

U-55012-250 arranged itself on the floor in what might have been described as a sitting position.
"The Clans of Seven Spin request to discuss trade of resources and information between Seven Spin and your people, any others you know of. Seven Spin requires land for development, habitation."

"The Empire has nearly 40 inhabited systems within it's boundries. We would be happy to give you an uninhabited system at the edge of our Empire. This would not only allow you to develop your world in whatever style you wish but it also would mean your back was covered by the Empire."

"The system should contain it's own resources. You would be free to develop it as you see fit. We only ask you to remain our friends. I can provide a list of uninhabited systems for you and your Clans to choose from if you wish."

"Much appreciation, thank for this great gift. Friendship is assured, Seven Spin has no desire for conflict. What of trade? Seven Spin require raw resources, 'iron' and others. Do you have these? In return we provide manufactured goods of what sort you desire, or information. Sul-Sulipund library is large, much information for trade."

"Then you shall have the system of your choice, and when you are ready to expand, you can expand away from the Empire, building your own collection of systems as our neighbor."

"As far as trade, a number of years ago we started an orginization called the Intergalactic Trade Hub. It links several nations together for commercial trade using a wormhole network we set up. I am including the data with the possible systems. This would give you access to over 120 members. This is something you can do at any time you feel you are ready to. We only ask that no war vessels be allowed to access the ITH so we can keep it pure for commercial travel."

"The knowlege you possess in your library would greatly interest us for we treasure knowlege above all else."

"This is acceptable, we will contact home soon discuss 'ITH', perhaps join, perhaps not. Again, we have no interest in conflict, no war is needed. Library is open to those that wish to access it, we will build new hub on new world soon. Thank you for your time, much is learned of your language, makes conversation much easier. You wish to discuss anything else?"

"We require nothing from you other than friendship. If your ship is damaged we could also assist in any repairs."

Adams looked out the window.

"She is a big one. How long did it take to construct it? We figured you either had real good inital dampers or you were not a biological life form. Your extreme halt showed us that."

He turned back towards U-55012-250.

"Is there any other way we could assist you? If you need to talk to any other civilizations we would offer this room to host them. You do not have to accept but I just wanted to make the option available to our new friends."

"Beleive the ship prefers to be refered to as 'He', or," U-55012-250 emmited what sounded like a string of static, "Which we understand is difficult for your species' to pronounce. MS-3 is a suitable designation, or possibly..." A pause, "Bob. Regardless, we are not subject to the same restrictions as the biological flesh-beasts...we do not understand why you allow yourself to be limited in such a way, but it is your choice."
U-55012-250 rolled slightly closer to Adams, "It has been interesting interacting with you, we have been informed that we plan to hold a discussion as soon as governmental facilities have been established and you will be most welcomed to attend."

"It is easier to interact with the flesh beings if you use gender terms. Their whole existance is centered around their gender, as well as the way their mind associates with objects. An example would be giving the female gender to ships. They associate their dependance upon it the same as with their mother and come to depend upon that relationship, however imagionary, for their security."

"We have had to adopt a number of physical characteristics over the centuries in order to interact with them. Language is one of them. In our pure form we don't even need to speak because we communicate by sharing our thoughts."

"We attempt to guide all the races in our Empire to this state of existance. We reciently uplifted our human population ti a quasi-energy state we call Childer. The machine sentients have acheived a pure energy state but it is not thought energy like the Ta'Nar. They are still required to be contained in some sort of "vessel", be that of flesh or machine. A few centuries ago we came across an insectoid race called the Thranx that possed a trace of their ancestrial hive mind. Their ability to connect to, and use it was called "Fazz". We are seeking a way to open this ability for their use."

"Our own natural abilities would enable us to contact you directly mind to mind but we felt this would have greatly startled you."

"Future meetings could be held in this manner if you wish."

"Also, please apologize to (screaching static sound), we did not mean to offend."

For a long while it appeared as if the robot had shut down, then its 'eye' swivled back up.
"Accept my apologies, a language update has been received from contact probes. We understand that gender roles are important in interaction between organic species, it is something that has been experimented with by the original Spinners," U-55012-250 paused, it might have been grinning at this point if it had a mouth, but it didnt, so it couldnt, "But this proved ineffecient. As to being in a pure state, it is possible that the First have achieved this state, as their current bodies are composed chiefly of analog components, yet they have guided the Clans for so long and, indeed, very well. The communication by thought...Fazz...is familiar as well, communication by direct linking is often employed when vocal communication fails, although perhaps they differ in some manner we do not comprehend as of yet. (static) is not offended, he is a simple mind and does not catch on quickly to things."

"We find direct communication will allow the full ideas as well as actual experiences will be communicated much faster and truthfully than any sort of verbal communication. This is one of the things that frighten other species so much. The truth in the matter will be open to all to see and there cannot be any way to hide it. They do not like to have all their lies revealed by their own thoughts. It makes them feel inadequate so we do not offer this type of communication to them until they feel they are ready. That is why I made it an option for our future meetings, to give your clans time to deliberate upon the topic.”

“Is there any other way we can assist you?”

"No, nothing more for now. If you wish, you may attend our confrence on Pax, coordinates will be delivered shortly."
