AP: Kingdom of Bjhajka opens borders after 600 years of isolationism!

CAPITAL CITY, Bjhajka (AP) -- King Christos II of Bjhajka opens the borders to the tiny island nation after 600 years of isolationism.

In the early hours today, King Christos I passed away from what we're being told was heart failure, leading to Christos II's ascension to the throne of Bjhajka. Though his father, and all previous rulers of Bjhajka had a staunch belief in isolationism, Christos II believes that continued isolation from the rest of the world will only damage his countries fragile economy, which for so long has been built on technology rights, and trout farming.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS and several other news agencies were allowed entrance to the harbor at Bjhajka's Capital City, Drokjah, and we were amazed by what we were allowed to see. Though the country has been isolated from the rest of the world for six hundred years, it has managed to flourish. Technologically, they are on par with most first world countries, and militarily they are strong, with an impressive airforce and navy. As far as their government, all-though it is controlled by the King, they hold free elections every five years to appoint new representatives to voice the opinions of the people to the King.

Due to Bjhajka's beautiful sandy beaches, lush forests, and an interior mountain range that rises several thousand feet into the air down the center of the island, King Christos II is expecting that this island will become a major tourist destination for the rest of the world.

King Christos II also voiced his concerns about other nations attempting to take advantage of his country opening its borders. The King had this to say, "I assure all nations that I and my people are far more interested in peace and trade rather than war. However, if you threaten my people, be prepared for swift military action."

Honorable World Leaders,

King Christos II greatly accepts your condolences and also look forward to further relations between our nations. However, due to over six hundred years of isolationism, we are curious about the rest of the world. Therefore, as High Inquisitor, I have been granted authority by King Christos II to declare the messenger before you an Envoy Extraordinary.

As Envoy Extraordinary, a diplomatic agent of the highest rank accredited to the Kingdom of Bjhajka, and acting as the resident representative of the Kingdom of Bjhajka, we should expect they be treated with the same respect you would treat the honorable King of Bjhajka, and are to be granted full diplomatic immunity under the law.

As for the full intentions of these ambassadors of good will, I assure you as High Inquisitor it is simply to form lasting alliances with the leaders of nations that share the same goals and concerns as King Christos II. As previously stated, due to over 600 years of isolationism, you can expect we are quite interested in the rest of the world.

If there are further questions, the Envoy Extraordinary that has been dispatched to your respective nation should be able to offer a reply, or relay the message to my offices in the Capital City of Drokjah here on the island of Bjhajka.

I thank you, and look forward to forming a working relationship.

Sincerely,
Lord Viktor Macano
High Inquisitor

We suggest having a strong economic ally to back you when you bring forth your endeavours, and we can support you as such ally. Note that this is an economic alliance, henceforth should anything militaryistically occur, we will not assist you, nor do we expect anything in response. Jenrak awaits your response.

General Saltzman,

We would be honored to accept your Captain Serena Harrod as envoy of the Aequatian government. The CAPITAL CITY OF DROKJAH, though a harbor town, does not have sufficent space to house a submersible vessel. There is, however, sufficent space at the Naval port of LON, 20.000 int. nautical miles South of DROKJAH. At LON we will have a chopper fueled and ready to take your envoy to the CAPITAL CITY.

We await your reply.

Captain Harrod had recieved the order to change her vessel's course to the Naval port of LON in Bjhajka, the RNS Arquebus surfaced and plowed through the water with a large wake behind it. The sleek attack submarine was one of the most advanced in the fleet and would be a fine carrier of a national anvoy. Within a few hours they had arrived in the harbour and the captain along with her other officers on the conning tower of the vessel, behind them was the Aequatian Ensign fluttering in the wind. Harrod and a Warrent Officer bodyguard would disembark and board the waiting helicopter to meet with King Christos II in the capital.

As the attack vessel rose from the frothing water, Viktor Macano gave a glance to the five men flanking him. The Bjhajkans seemed to have a slightly Asian appearance, though quite tall and broad chested. They wore military issue uniforms, apparently the theme being black and red.

Viktor Macano was a severe man in his forties, tanned skin and black hair slicked back, a single comma falling over his brow. Standing out from the rest of other soldiers that flanked him, he wore a knee length leather coat, military ranking patches on his right arm and across his left breast.

As the two officials from the Aequatian government disembarked their vessel to board the chopper, Viktor Macano spoke, "Greetings. I am Viktor Macano, High Inquisitor. It is my duty to inform you that you are the first foreigners to set foot on our island in over six hundred years. However, we are in a bit of a hurry, so we can save the formal greetings for our arrival in the Capital."

Several minutes later, seat belt buckles fastened, the helicopter rose from the launch pad, the blades beating at the air, kicking up dust. Higher and higher it rose, till the submarine and the harbor were far below them. North the chopper flew.

"If you look out your window, you can see one of our national forests. Ah... and there is the Capital City, Drokjah," Viktor Macano said.

Sure enough, off in the distance the shimmering spires of the Capital City came into view, the sunlight reflecting off the towers was blinding. Seemingly out of the forest rose this urban sprawl, and a massive city (OOC: Think Tokyo / Metropolis from the Superman comics). Truly, the Capital City of Bjhajka was a spectacular sight to behold.

"Welcome, to Bjhajka."

I hope that our two nations can maintain a friendly, mutually beneficial relationship over the coming years.

Yes, this is Colonel Gaij Samis of King Christos II's Grand Airforce. We have you on our radar. What is... Ah, wait a moment. I see you listed in our ledger. Continue on your present course... Get me Lieutenant Colonel Felix."

There Gaij stood in the control tower high atop a rock formation that reached out over the Naval port of Lon. He eyed the radar screen, waiting for a confirmation. After a moment, he switched off the mic to speak to Lieutenant Colonel Felix, "Get your men together to greet these folks, and make sure you're armed. Can't be too careful."

Viktor Macano gave a pleased nod to Harrod, then a glance out the window once more as the chopper began to descend to the heli-pad near the Capitol building.

The Capitol was not the largest building in town, though it was indeed the oldest. It appeared to be an amalgam of ancient architecture and modern technology. Clearly this is where the government has been seated since the establishment of the Kingdom some six hundred years ago.

"Regretfully I must inform you that we made your arrival public, hence the---" before he could finish there was the blare of a horn, as many had gathered beside the large walkway that lead from the heli-pad to the Capitol. There was much fanfare for the arrival of these foreigners, the first in six hundred years to set foot on the island.

"After the initial greetings, the King would like to see you, then we can show you to your quarters. I'm sure you must be hungry, therefore refreshments will be supplied in your quarters. A formal dinner is planned for tomorrow evening."

Speaking with a firm voice over the crowd, "We are a tiny nation, but our people are very patriotic. And as you can see, six hundred years isolation has not affected our country technologically speaking. Though a foreigner has not set foot on our soil in some time, we have managed to sell technolgy rights to multiple nations. Off shore banking, so forth, so on... You could say many of our businesses on the island have been forming bonds with outsiders in the event that this day should occur, although they managed to conceal the base of their businesses quite well. King Christos I prohibited any sort've business like that. His son, however, sees things quite differently."

They continued along, crowds throwing flower peddles and cheering until the group reached massive, golden doors that seemed to open on their own, revealing a great hall. Continuing on, as if narrating their stroll, "Here you have the Capital building, which began construction some six hundred years ago when our nation was formed after a rather bloody civil war. As you can see, over time we've made upgrades. You can see patches of old stone and metal merged, a sort've metaphor for our Kingdom." "Ah, but we are at a disadvantage. You see, our economy is not what it once was during the early reign of Christos I. Private businesses are being controlled now by the government, whereas previously they were not. Ironic, that these corporations planned so long for the day they could openly do business with foreigners, and the moment they can, the government takes it from them. Alas, that is business."

As smug as can be, he waved a hand at the great hall. "All you see was built over six hundred years of hard work and by one powerful line of Kings and Queens. We would not risk losing it all allowing private corporations and the corruption of big business to continue to control our economy during this very fragile stage in the history of our nation. Certainly you understand?"

Before she could respond, a booming voice (think Terrence Stamp) echoed through the great hall as the King entered the chamber, "Of course she understands, Viktor. The King gave a firm nod, folding his arms across his chest. "It is a pleasure to have you. This country of yours, you say our island reminds you of it? Hm... I must see your land someday."

Viktor Macano stood silently, watching this Smyth. His cold eyes seemed to size the man up. He turned his gaze to the King, wringing his hands together behind his back as he waited for the inevitable speech.

The King began to walk away, speaking all the while. Viktor gave a hand gesture to the ambassadors, signaling that they are to follow, then he brought up the rear. The King spoke, "We have much to discuss, yes. Our island nation is small, but growing. Tomorrow, I would like Viktor to take you on a tour of the island, as well as the barrier islands. It is essential that you get a feel of our great land, the environment, and its people. Yes, trade pacts, defense treaties, embassy exchange, all in good time."

They entered a much larger, round room from the great hall, a marble-esque stone making up the floor, the walls covered in murals of Bjhajka's past, the ceiling a glass dome. The King continued, "You will learn all about my Kingdom's past. We do not intend to keep any secrets from our allies, nor do we believe secrets should be kept from us. We have an Army, an Airforce, and a Navy, we have all the advancements of any nation that has been exposed to the whole world for some time. I believe our isolation has shielded us for six hundred years, it has protected us. However, now it is time for my Kingdom to grow."

"Your majesty---" Viktor attempted to interrupt, but was cut off.

"Silence, Viktor," the King snapped. Turning to Harrod, Christos gave a wicked smile, looking her dead in the eyes, "I do not believe our new allies were naive enough to believe we were some mysterious, benevolent nation hidden from the world. Isolation does not equal some sort of Zen like peace. You see, I don't intend to take on the world."

Viktor gave the King a strange look, which the King returned with a nod. Viktor took up where the King left off, urgency in his voice, "We do have much to discuss, and my role in this matter is to familiarize you with our plans. This is not world domination, it is simply an attempt to secure our futures. I hope you understand this, and I trust you will keep this secret."

"I leave you to be taken to your quarters. My servents will provide you with refreshments, and Viktor will have them take care of any of your needs," and with that the King walked away, leaving them in the large round room.

Aequatians were naturally cynical and Harrod, although young, was already viewed as a pessimistic at home. Both her and Smyth followed their respective servents to their quarters, they were both grateful to have such an ornate quarters available, although being aboard an attack submarine for a most part of a year made a broom closet appealing to sleep in.

Selena sat on her bed and dismissed the servant so she could think to herself in private, "They seem far more advanced than such an isolated nation would be, especially an island." The last comment by Viktor seemed to rub her the wrong way, there was something about him that disturbed her. "Oh well, it is getting late and tomorrow is the big day I suppose." She said to herself before taking her uniform's shirt and trousers off and setting them on the bed and laying down under the covers.

Smyth was in his own quarters, much larger than the warrent officers' quarters aboard the submarine where he shared a single room with at least seven others. He disrobed and set his sidearm down on the lavish end table that sat beside his bed before moving under the covers and falling into a light sleep as he would on board the Arquebus or at home with his family and four brothers.

James looked at his watch impationatlly.

"Just be patient James."

"They sure have funny ways of showing ambassodors hospitality. Especially the national leaders."

"Well I'm not sure what they are doing, or if they are talking with someone, but we must be respectful. Soon enough it will be our turn."

The second chopper arrived, and Felix threw open the door after it had set down. Helping the ambassadors aboard, he hopped into the aircraft. After a few moments, it rose from the helipad into the sky.

"Again, I offer you both our most sincere apologies. Apparently we recieved your communique that you wished to visit, but your message that offered us a precise time and date did not get through. We've managed to secure you both the finest quarters available at the Capital, and King Christos II will see you as soon as possible."

Felix cringed a bit inside, knowing full well that this explanation did little to make up for the fact that these ambassadors might feel they're being treated poorly. He hoped that the King could smooth things over.

Smyth was in his own quarters, much larger than the warrent officers' quarters aboard the submarine where he shared a single room with at least seven others. The large doors to the Kings chambers closed behind Viktor, the room dimly light by LCD screen monitors that lined one wall. Every news station seemed to play on the multiple screens. The King, of course, sat behind a large wooden desk, hands folded before him.

"They are both in their quarters, sir," Viktor said. "If you'll pardon me, why did you inform them of our intentions?"

"Viktor, you advised my father and also served as his Inquisitor through part of his term as King. You taught me a great many things before I went off to explore the world, and a great many when I returned. You helped me gain control of the Kingdom after the death of my father and save it from the various business families that tried to claim the crown or over throw the monarchy. In all of this, you did not doubt me, or question me. Why start now?"

"Sir, it's just that I feel laying out our plans now---"

"Laying out our plans?" the King shouted, rising from his chair quickly. "I laid nothing out. They simply know we don't care to remain on this island forever. They know that I want a foothold on the mainland. That is all they know. Believe me, I don't want to wage a war, at least not in the traditional sense. This is not the time for bombs and guns. I will use politics as our weapon. Through trade, through spying, through politics I will make my Kingdom grow."

Viktor gave a hesitant nod as he walked slowly toward the wall of LCD screens, his eyes zeroing in on a news piece on Bjhajka. "I'm sorry to doubt you, m'Lord. I'm just concerned for the Kingdom and you, that is all."

Christos sat back down, turning his chair to face the wall behind him. Slowly the wall seemed to open, revealing a window that looked out over the City. The sun had begun to set in the East, the last few rays of light catching the many glass towers throughout the Capital City. "This island is too small to house such a great nation, and such an amazing race as ours," Christos said with a heavy sigh. Continuing, "These people from Aequatio seem quite receptive. I think we have a true ally here."

"Perhaps," Viktor said as he approached the King's desk, "though it is too early to tell. I do believe you are right. That woman, I feel she distrusts me."

"Nobody trusts you, Viktor. That's part of your job description."

"So it would seem," the High Inquisitor said under his breath. A flat, silvery device beneath his coat began to beep. He reached inside, withdrawing it from the pocket to listen to the transmission.

"What is it?" the King asked.

"It seems there are ambassadors from Kanami arriving. Their communique apparently got lost, the one where they told us they were coming. No matter, I'll simply take them to their quarters," the High Inquisitor said matter-of-factly.

The King turned his chair away from the window, peering at Viktor Macano, the High Inquisitor through the growing darkness. "No, I'll meet with them in the dining hall. Prepare some refreshments. Perhaps some wine, fruit... maybe cheese."

Viktor gave a bow, "As you wish."

OFFICAL COMMUNIQUE
FROM THE ISLAND KINGDOM OF BJHAJKA
AS FOLLOWS...

We appreciate your concerns over the death of King Christos I, and we most certainly would like to form a working relationship between our two great nations.

Currently the King is accepting multiple ambassadors from other nations, and the government of Reloria is no exception. If you have a diplomatic envoy, please send them to our island.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
The Offices of Lord Viktor Macano
High Inquisitor

Constitutional Matriarchy of Reloria

Unfortunately all of my senior staff are currently busy with matters of state. There is much for this new government to do now that we are independent after all! We can send an ambassador to your nation, however, perhaps as part of a future embassy exchange. Ms. Delore Giova is a trained ambassador, and is ready to be deployed to an assignment promptly, if this meets with your approval -- a couple of soldiers of the RCSF will accompany her until, though they will remain unarmed at your request.

I look forward to hearing from you again!
